Donald Trump won’t be getting a producing credit in Ike Barinholtz’ dark comedy “The Oath,” which opens Friday, but he’s the major reason why the film got made.
“The movie grew out of the Thanksgiving dinner two years ago at my house in Los Angeles,” Barinholtz recalls. “We got into a nasty fight about politics — and we had all voted the same way against Trump. So I woke up the next morning and thought ‘I’ve got make a movie about this, if this can happen at our table, it must be happening all over America.'”
“The Oath” takes place in a near future in which the U.S. government, headed by unnamed president, has required all citizens to sign a “Patriot’s Oath” to the government by Black Friday — the day after Thanksgiving. Barinholtz’ character Chris and his no-nonsense wife Kai, played by Tiffany Haddish, host...

Ike Barinholtz directed a quartet of “Mindy Project” episodes while co-starring as that series’ car thief-turned-nurse, Morgan Tookers. This fall, he makes his feature directorial debut with “The Oath,” a political comedy he also wrote. In the film, Barinholtz and Emmy-nominated “Saturday Night Live” host Tiffany Haddish portray spouses whose place in the resistance movement is challenged by their nearest and dearest over Thanksgiving. The holiday falls the day before each American must sign “The Patriot’s Oath,” professing government loyalty.
Turkey Day turns violent for the couple while they are supposed to be expressing gratitude for the family and friends: Roadside Attractions’ first trailer finds Barinholtz at knifepoint and Haddish recovering from a tasing, plus additional bloodshed, body slamming, and handguns. Co-stars include “Portlandia” co-creator Carrie Brownstein, “SNL” veteran Nora Dunn, and Billy Magnussen and John Cho as Washington agents who sour the group’s festivities.

Can’t wait for Thanksgiving turkey, fixings and dinner-table flare-ups over Washington’s latest folly? This might tide you over: A teaser trailer for The Oath, starring writer-director Ike Barinholtz and Tiffany Haddish in a comedy that reimagines the holiday family film for the era of political tribalism.
From the producers of Get Out and BlacKkKlansman, The Oath stars Barinholtz and Haddish as a progressive couple – he’s high-strung, she’s more level-headed – who are appalled at the latest insult from the Oval Office: All Americans are being asked to sign a loyalty oath by the day after Thanksgiving. Black Friday indeed.
“I’m not going to ruin Thanksgiving,” Barinholtz’s Chris pledges. Quick cut to him screaming at his family tablemates, “You are Nazis!”
Here’s the logline: As the Thanksgiving deadline to sign approaches, the combination of sparring relatives, Chris’s own agitation and the unexpected arrival...

Dark Horse recently published The Fifth Beatle, a graphic novel account of Brian Epstein's life with The Beatles, written by the Tony Award-winning Broadway producer Vivek Tiwary with artwork by Andrew C. Robinson. A film deal was being talked about even before the book's November release, and that film is now officially underway, with Peyton Reed (The Break Up, Yes Man) just announced as director. Bruce Cohen (American Beauty, Silver Linings Playbook) is producing, along with Tiwary himself.Epstein was the guy who, against all odds, shepherded The Fab Four to global ultrastardom, getting them signed to classical/spoken-word label Parlophone when nobody else would take them, and wrangling them through the heights of Beatlemania. Yet for all the hoopla surrounding his public life, he remained a private individual, keeping his sexuality closeted, and struggling with gambling and drug addiction. He died of a barbiturate overdose in 1967, aged just...
