Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes releases in theatres on May 10th, 2024.
The reboot from the past decade of the massive Planet of the Apes franchise is often mentioned in debates about the best trilogies of the century, and personally, I couldn’t agree more. Although Rupert Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes doesn’t quite reach the same level as Matt Reeves’ Dawn and War (The Batman), the trilogy’s overarching story has the ideal narrative, thematic, and entertainment ingredients for an undeniable success, alongside the truly impressive use of motion-capture technology.
With Wes Ball (The Maze Runner) at the helm and a script by Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds), expectations couldn’t be higher for one of the most anticipated films of the year, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

It has been 56 years since “Planet of the Apes,” arguably one of the greatest science fiction films of all time. To see the franchise display such promising growth and evolution almost six decades later is phenomenal and deeply heartening. That’s especially so at a time when Hollywood is enduring one of its most challenging eras. The fourth installment in the franchise reboot, “Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes,” takes place 300 years after the events of 2017’s “War For The Planet of the Apes.”
At the center of this story is a young chimpanzee named Noa, played by Owen Teague, forced to make a perilous journey after his village is destroyed and his family and community are either slaughtered or abducted by the army of Kevin Durand’s megalomaniacal Proximus Caesar.

It’s not always easy to find out which movies hit theaters each week, especially after the Hollywood strikes led to many release date changes. With the WGA and actors strikes resolved and summer blockbusters starting to roll in, May is filled with both big budget flicks and new indie releases.
Premiering May 10 is Wes Ball’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” the newest installment in the “Apes” franchise about a young chimp who must save his clan from the evil king Proximus Caesar starring Owen Teague, Freya Allen, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon and William H. Macy. Also hitting theaters is Chris Pine’s directorial debut “Poolman,” a noir comedy about a pool cleaner who stumbles upon a mystery at a Los Angeles apartment block starring Pine, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Danny DeVito and Annette Bening. Two films getting limited releases this week are “Lazareth,” a thriller following a...

It's been seven years since director Matt Reeves concluded Caesar's story with 2017's "War for the Planet of the Apes." But that movie wasn't the definitive ending for the long-running sci-fi franchise by any means. Now, the apes are finally back on the big screen in director Wes Ball's "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes." Featuring a new cast in a new timeline years removed from the previous trilogy, this is a new start for the series. So, are moviegoers going to have to stick around during the credits to see what the future holds?
Credits scenes are a staple of franchise filmmaking in the modern era. Given that Disney is now in control of "Planet of the Apes," it doesn't feel out of character for there to be a tease of something else to come down the line. For those headed to a theater to see "Kingdom,...

The fourth installment in the Planet of the Apes reboot series has surpassed one of the films in its predecessor trilogy with its initial Rotten Tomatoes score. The film, titled Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is set three centuries after the events of the 2017 movie and follows a young chimpanzee Noa and a woman named Mae on a journey to determine the future of humans and apes.

When it was first announced that the Planet of the Apes franchise was going to get the reboot treatment back in the now-Jurassic era of 2011, you could feel a familiar cynicism kick in: Great, another recognizable intellectual property getting trotted out for a quick cash grab, just in time for a corporate quarterly report. We’d finally washed the ashy taste of that ill-advised Tim Burton remake from 2001 out of mouths, and now Warners was going back to the ’70s pop culture well, ready to ransack musty nostalgia from chimpan-a to chimpan-z.

Plot: Generations after the death of the Ape leader Caesar, humans have continued to slip down the evolutionary ladder, with apes taking their place. Noah (Owen Teague) is a young chimpanzee whose peace-loving village is attacked by an ape army led by the evil wannabe monarch, Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand). Vowing to rescue his kin, he sets off on a journey across the new wasteland of earth, where he encounters a human girl (Freya Allan), who becomes his tentative ally.
Review: It was never going to be easy following up on the pretty damn good Apes trilogy 20th Century Fox put out a little while back. Many forget that director Matt Reeves, who was elevated to the A-list thanks to his work on those films, actually only directed the second and third films of the trilogy, with Rupert Wyatt directing the first film, which wasn’t quite the epic the other two were.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” opens with Caesar lying in state, surrounding by a horde of mourning chimps, as his dead body is covered in flowers and ritually set on fire. The movie then cuts to the jungle, where a title informs us that it’s “many generations later.” In other words, the tale we’ve been watching in the last three “Apes” films — “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” (2011), “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” (2014), and “War for the Planet of the Apes” (2017) — is now ancient franchise history. I’m in the minority of viewers who would greet that news by saying, “Thank God.”

Directed by Wes Ball (The Maze Runner film series) and written by Josh Friedman, the latest film in the Planet of the Apes franchise arrives seven years after its predecessor. A standalone sequel to War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), it marks the fourth instalment in this iconic series. The film stars Owen Teague in the lead role alongside Freya Allan Kevin Durand (last seen in Abigail), Peter Macon, and the ever-resourceful William H. Macy in a rare appearance.
Three hundred years after the events of War for the Planet of the Apes, a complex ape civilisation flourishes while humanity has regressed to a primitive state following a devastating virus. Wielding weapons forged from lost human technology, ape king Proximus Caesar (Durand) betrays the legacy of the hero ape Caesar, subjugating peaceful ape clans.

The recent Planet of the Apes prequel trilogy fizzled out by its third installment, as any form of social allegory it carried over from the original franchise had all but disappeared, with Matt Reeves’ War completing the saga’s slow transition into generic dystopian survival epic. Because the recent Fox-Disney merger has ensured that the only movies getting produced and released theatrically under the former studio’s new ownership are tied to familiar brand names, we’re returning to this post-apocalyptic Earth 300 years after the death of Andy Serkis’ Caesar for what is being tipped as the start of a new trilogy, bridging the gap between recent reboots and the original Charlton Heston vehicle. Surprisingly, for a project that was likely greenlit for non-creative reasons, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has surprisingly lofty aims, aiming to unpack the legacy of an ape-led revolution many generations later, when sharp...

In the grand scheme of things, Matt Reeves’ two entries into the Planet of the Apes series might be the highest peak this beloved franchise has experienced since the original 1968 movie. There have been other good movies about talking chimpanzees and the humans they enslave—a shocking amount too when you think about that premise for a minute—yet Reeves brought a somber, frigid tactility to the material we’d never seen before. So following in those footsteps, as well as those left by the monumental performance of Andy Serkis as Caesar (a Spartacus among apes), was always going to be a tough act.
But if I’m being honest, I missed how chatty the apes first were in the original Rod Serling screenplay from more than 50 years ago. While Reeves’ movie did an impressive job of setting the stage for how human civilization collapsed while a nascent strand of super smart gorillas rose up,...

Franklin J. Schaffner's 1968 sci-fi classic "Planet of the Apes" introduces its titular primates in a gloriously nightmarish fashion. The film's central astronaut trio, lost on a distant planet (wink), finds panicked, mute humans running through a field of tall grass, fleeing attackers on horseback. The camera then zooms dizzily into the face of one of said attackers, revealing that he is, in fact, a gorilla. This world, we see, is topsy-turvy. It is a place where humans and apes are transposed, with the former treated like animals by the latter. Schaffner, and screenwriters Michael Wilson and Rod Serling, present this tilted universe as a conduit for satire, a means to dissect and examine the foibles of humanity via the absurd -- even whimsical -- image of talking ape men. The film may end on a bleak note, but there's some levity mixed into the very batter.

After 2017’s masterful War of the Planet of the Apes, which completed the trilogy that started with 2011’s Rise and 2014’s Dawn and told the epic story of wise leader Caesar and the apes who created this whole new world, I really thought there was nowhere else to go with this franchise that had itself started so brilliantly in 1968 with the original starring Charlton Heston as an astronaut who lands in this futuristic world dominated by intelligent apes. Many other iterations would come, even a side foray by Tim Burton, but it was that most recent trilogy that really popped. But being box office successes, 20th Century’s new owner Disney knew there was more to be mined, and they were right.

Picking up three centuries after War for the Planet of the Apes, the 2017 conclusion of Matt Reeves’s trilogy, Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes at long last brings the setting of the reboot franchise in line with Franklin J. Schaffner’s original Planet of the Apes. Here, the descendants of the first hyper-intelligent primates now rule the world and have established solid civilizations, while the nearly extinct human species has turned feral.
With humans reduced to a ragtag population of wild animals, conflict is now mostly evident between rival groups of apes. One such collision occurs at the start of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, with one clan overrun and pressed into servitude by Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand), an ambitious bonobo styling himself as the first king of apes. Only one member of the smaller group, the young chimpanzee Noa (Owen Teague), eludes death or capture,...

The Planet of the Apes franchise has long been part of popular culture and garnered a huge fan following since its debut in 1968. Its popularity in recent years led to a reboot film series starting with 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes. And now the fourth movie in the reboot series will be released soon, titled Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes.
Caesar from Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
Directed by Wes Ball and written by Josh Friedman, the movie’s box office predictions look promising. And if the predictions have any truth, Ball might be well on his way to beating Matt Reeves’ record in the 2.1 billion dollar franchise.

The summer movie season continues with its first direct franchise installment, hoping to revive things after a softer month. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Undaunted by the disappointing showing for Universal’s “The Fall Guy” this past weekend, Disney and 20th Century are releasing “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” the next installment of the popular franchise that began way back in 1968 with the sci-fi classic starring Charlton Heston, into over 3,900 theaters this Friday. This installment takes place hundreds of the years into the future, when the apes have fully taken over from humans, following a young ape named Noah (Owen Teague from “Bloodline”) who goes on a journey to rescue his people from a more dominant ape clan.

Fortunately, because this franchise is important to the studio, we'll get it right like we did this one, took our time and got it right."It takes time, the development itself, and my big thing is I do not want to go into prep when the script is not done. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has already garnered some pretty stellar first reactions, and the film looks like it will rule the box office as well. The film is projected to gross $130 million worldwide during its opening weekend, which would be a nice boost for theaters after the lacklustre opening of The Fall Guy.
The domestic box office take for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is currently sitting at $50 million or more, which places it more or less even with the previous installments of the modern franchise. Rise of the Planet of the Apes opened to $54.8 million in 2011, followed by Dawn of the Planet of the Apes with $72 million in 2014, and War for the Planet of the Apes with $56.2 million in 2017. The first Planet of the Apes movie under the Disney regime after absorbing Fox hits theaters this weekend with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes poised to do $50M+ domestic, and $130M WW.
After the dull opening of Universal’s Fall Guy, Jesus, God, Saint Mary and Joseph, let’s hope those projections stay steady. Apes plans to pull in the under 35 guy demo in a way that Fall Guy did not. Presales stateside of around $3.1M, in line with what was the 3-day of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning ($54.6M), indicate a $50M-plus debut. That start in U.S./Canada isn’t far from the $56.2M opening of Matt Reeves’ 2017 movie, War of the Planet of the Apes, and that would be considered solid. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ has the advantage that it’s opening at a time with less competition than War of the Planet of the Apes.

Primates will rule (the box office) again!
Disney’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is aiming for $50 million to $55 million from 3,700 theaters in its domestic debut, which will easily be enough to tower over the box office chart. Those ticket sales are roughly even with two of the three prior installments in 20th Century’s rebooted “Planet of the Apes” franchise: 2017’s “War for the Planet of the Apes” opened to $56.2 million and 2011’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” opened to $54.8 million, while 2014’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” notched a series-best $72 million.
At the international box office, where “Apes” movies tend to make the bulk of their revenues, this installment is tracking to collect $80 million to $90 million. Based on those projections, the film should end up on Sunday with a solid $130 million to $140 million at the global box office.

Director Wes Ball tells Den of Geek that he remembers seeing the original 1968 sci-fi classic Planet of the Apes on “HBO or something” as a child, watching with his dad. “I’m sure all the concepts probably went over my head,” he muses now. “I was probably very young. I don’t remember having a reaction to the Statue of Liberty, but I remember the images very clearly. I remember the feral humans in the grass and the apes on horses and the sets and obviously that [ending] on the beach. That’s what I remember—the images, the iconography of it all.”

The Complete ‘Planet of the Apes’ Guide To Help You Watch The Films Before ‘Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes’ Release (Picture Credit: IMDb)
Tim Burton’s attempt at rebooting the renowned sci-fi “Planet of the Apes” film franchise that took the world by storm in the early and late 70’s was unsuccessful. However, the complete reboot of the series in 2011 did what Burton was unable to do. The franchise was back in action and was stronger than ever with a better budget, action, and graphics (CGI was preferred this time instead of costumes).
The original “Planet of the Apes” was a pentalogy based on a French novel called “La Planète des singes.” It spanned over 6 years, with a continuously decreasing budget for each film — the franchise gained massive traction despite that.

Andy Serkis is hailed as a legend of motion capture performances. His work behind the mo-cap suit in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Planet of the Apes trilogy are widely appreciated by fans worldwide. However, it can’t be denied that motion-capture performances have still not received the critical acclaim they deserve.
Andy Serkis as Gollum
When the King Kong actor was asked his thoughts on motion-capture acting having a separate Oscars category, he strongly refused it. Serkis thinks that motion-capture acting is not different from normal acting and can also be acknowledged in the present Oscar categories.

Wes Ball is ready to rumble with his upcoming release, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. After the reboot trilogy with Andy Serkis’ Ceasar in the lead came to an end, Ball took on the reigns with new characters and a new story but set in the same (or at least similar) world. This time, instead of Ceasar, we have Noa, a young chimpanzee hunter at the heart of the story, played by Owen Teague.

Matt Reeves did wonders with the Apes. The filmmakers’ Planet of the Apes trilogy created a fantastical world that was surprisingly rich and beautifully crafted. With that, it was difficult to imagine another director taking on this exciting series. Enter Wes Ball. Coming off of the popular Maze Runner franchise, Ball has successfully continued the already impressive world with his latest, The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The film offers a fresh faced cast that includes, Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy. It is a bold sequel that continues what Reeves started with a smart and satisfying new story (which is getting great buzz).

Planet of the Apes is one of the longest-running IPs in Hollywood. The franchise is gearing up for another run at the box office with the upcoming film Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The movie has been directed by Wes Ball. It is set to be a continuation of the previous films in the series that were directed by Matt Reeves and Rupert Wyatt.
Although Reeves has not returned to the franchise for the latest movie, Wes Ball made it clear that he has a great deal of admiration for what the filmmaker has achieved within the series already. The morning of the “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” premiere, stars of the film Peter Macon and Ras-Samuel discovered they were staying at the same hotel while getting breakfast. And when they met eyes from either end of the buffet line, they did not greet each other with a wave or a simple hello, they did so as apes. Embodying their characters, they dropped their shoulders and shuffled together, hooting and panting at the sight of a friend.
“I’m sure we made a spectacle of ourselves,” Macon told Variety at the Los Angeles premiere Thursday. “[But] we met each other as apes first and human beings second. So that is never going to go away.”
As previously reported by Variety, the cast of “Kingdom” spent six weeks in “ape school,” where they learned to walk, speak, play and ride horses as their primate counterparts. According to director Wes Ball,...

In Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, director Wes Ball plans to breathe new life into the franchise with a story set several generations in the future following Caesar's reign. Apes are now the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows.
As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.
Given Ball's expertise in the young adult realm with The Maze Runner movies and chatter about Kingdom shifting the spotlight to a younger cast of characters, some fans have expressed concerns about the classic sci-fi franchise becoming a franchise for teens. Then, there's also the fact it has to follow the previous trilogy (no easy feat).

Andy Serkis and Matt Reeves, who collaborated on 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes, may not lead the new adaptation, but still played a role in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
At the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Thursday, Kingdom director Wes Ball recounted how at the very beginning of working on the project, “I had dinner with Matt because I had known him from our movie Mouse Guard together and I told him all these ideas we were doing. He was literally about to get on a plane to go do Batman, and after that dinner I felt like we were ready to go make this movie and have the support to just go for it. The summer movie season is here. After a frankly terrible start to the box office in 2024, all eyes are now on everything from "The Fall Guy" to "Deadpool & Wolverine" to give movie theaters a reason to celebrate. As far as May goes, "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" looks to get things moving in the right direction, being the first entry in the franchise in seven years. We've got a new filmmaker, a new cast, a new timeline, and a new reason to believe that this classic sci-fi property will once again find life more than 55 years after the original film debuted in 1968.
Current tracking suggests that "Kingdom" will open between $54 and $61 million domestically, per Deadline. Assuming that holds, it would be a damn fine start for the film. While the budget has yet to be revealed, it is said to be in the $120 million range. Disney and...

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” director Wes Ball thinks it’s high time that Wētā FX got its due for its innovative simian performance capture animation. So he intends to peel back the curtain for the first time on the upcoming Blu-ray release. As first reported on the “Ape Nation” podcast, Ball will offer the entire movie, which takes place 300 years after the reign of Andy Serkis’ Caesar, as a bonus feature in a before- and-after comparison of raw dailies and completed performance capture animation and VFX.
“I think VFX is too much maligned…when it’s a tool like anything else,” Ball told IndieWire. “So I think to show the absolute peak of artistry and what these artists actually do is not some button that says, ‘Make Apes.’ These are true storytellers at work here. I want to show that off and celebrate it.”

The latest instalment in the relaunched Planet of the Apes franchise, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, arrives in theatres exactly ten days from now, and 20th Century Studios has released quite a bit of new promotional material, including an action-packed final trailer spotlighting plenty of new footage.
The teaser tells us a little more about new lead ape, Noa, and reveals why he has a vendetta against the tyrannical Proximo Caesar. We also hear Mae speak, and it seems the human girl is fully aware that the world once belonged to her people before the ape uprising.
Does this mean Kotpota will bring events full circle? It's possible, but we might see at least one more movie before things begin to link up to the original Planet of the Apes.
Check out the new trailer, along with a poster and two featurettes, and let us know what you think in the comments section.
