On the indie side of filmmaking life, Sean Price Williams has seen it all. He’s worked with the Safdies, Alex Ross Perry, Nathan Silver, Robert Green, and Athina Rachel Tsangari, and often more than once. He’s the premier chronicler of New York City independent movies behind the camera, typically shooting on celluloid, and bringing surreal, gritty poetry to character-driven stories that feel on the ground like portraits of versions of ourselves.
One of the most unabashedly movie-loving cinematographers working today, Williams last year moved to directing for the sprawling, scratchy-edged tale of East Coast youth, “The Sweet East,” which remains in theaters and features stars like Jacob Elordi, Simon Rex, Jeremy O. Harris, and Ayo Edebiri.
But even more recently than that directorial debut, he released a “1000 Movies” book via Metrograph Editions, a simple, unadorned paperback that offers, rather than commentary, pages listing his favorite essential films and...

A teenage girl meets all manner of extremists, hipsters and hoodlums in Sean Price Williams’ amusing, contemporary adventure
High-school student Lillian (Talia Ryder) gets separated from her classmates and chaperones at a pizza parlour during a school trip to Washington DC because a deranged shooter is convinced paedophiles are operating out of its basement. And so begins an adventure up and back down the eastern seaboard, taking Lillian from her native South Carolina up through the nation’s capital, to New York City, Vermont and beyond, meeting all manner of eccentrics, extremists, hipsters and hoodlums. It’s the sort of lolloping, weird ride through society that’s a textbook example of the classical picaresque, in which a low-born, none-too-honest but appealing protagonist gets up to stuff. Think of 18th-century novels like Tom Jones or Moll Flanders, but updated to contemporary America – although the film contrives to get Lillian dolled up in revolutionary-era petticoats and corsetry,...

‘Slave Play’ in London: U.K. Prime Minister Calls Plan for Two Black Audiences-Only Shows “Divisive”
A London production of the U.S. play Slave Play, written by actor and playwright Jeremy O. Harris (Zola, Euphoria, Gossip Girl), is making political waves after the U.K. prime minister criticized plans to offer two performances exclusively for Black audiences as “wrong and divisive.”
The controversial play is set on a plantation and explores “race, identity and sexuality.” Its 13-week run at London’s Noel Coward Theatre, with a cast that includes Game of Thrones star Kit Harington, is scheduled to include two so-called Black Out performances for an “all-black-identifying audience,” just like the Broadway version of the show offered.
The producers of the London version told BBC News that their hope was “to celebrate the play with the widest possible audience” and that they “want to increase accessibility to theater for everyone.” They added: “The Broadway production conceived of Black Out nights, and we are carefully considering how...

Game of Thrones star Kit Harington will return to the London stage in the upcoming production of Jeremy O. Harris’ acclaimed and controversial Slave Play.
Despite the star casting, Slave Play playwright Jeremy O. Harris assures audiences that Harington’s presence will not be a “distraction.”
In an interview with London’s The Guardian, Harris said Harington was emphatic that the ensemble piece not be turned into “the Jon Snow experience” (a reference to Harington’s character on Thrones).
“Kit was saying ‘I don’t want this to be Kit Harington in Slave Play, this is an ensemble play and I’m not even the lead,’” Harris told the newspaper. “He knows the weight his name carries and how that could become a distraction, if we allowed it to be.”

His gig as a college professor lecturing to students that are too “goddamn delicate” to embrace thorny topics of race has him ostracized from colleagues. He’s estranged from family, all of whom are juggling their own issues––health problems, divorce, the financial strain that comes with both. Malia Obama stepped onto a red carpet last week for the first time, with good reason. The former first daughter hit Park City for the Sundance Film Festival premiere of her short film The Heart, an 18-minute directorial debut that snagged a spot in the U.S. short fiction films program of the 2024 edition. The premiere screening happened on the fest’s opening day, Jan. 18, and screened two more times over the weekend. The budding filmmaker, who participated in all post-screening Q&As to discuss her work, also took time out of her busy schedule to screen the film and speak with a group of students at Park City High School about all things creative from writing to directing.
Malia Obama attended The Heart premiere and posed with her actors and short-film collaborators.
It wasn’t all work and no play for the 25-year-old daughter of Barack and Michelle Obama.

Jacqueline Novak’s comedy special “Jacqueline Novak: Get On Your Knees” will premiere on Netflix Jan. 23, 2024. The project is directed by Natasha Lyonne (“Poker Face”), who also serves as an executive producer.

For the past decade-and-a-half, cinematographer Sean Price Williams has been a staple of the New York indie-film scene, lensing features for (naming just a handful) the Safdie brothers, Alex Ross Perry, Michael Almereyda, Robert Greene.
The Sweet East finds Williams moving to the director’s chair with a script from film critic Nick Pinkerton. Deliberately provocative and very funny, The Sweet East begins with a Pizzagate sequence that separates high-schooler Lillian from her classmates in D.C. From there she drifts throughout the Northeast, mingling with a cast of outsiders who all take a special, often sexual interest in her, among them a disorganized band of Antifa-esque punks, an over-eager filmmaking duo (Ayo Edebiri and playwright Jeremy O. Harris), and closeted Neo-Nazi academic Lawrence (Simon Rex).

Celine Song has thought long and hard about how her current choices will ripple out into the future. “Who we are now cannot escape from who we were once,” says the director behind this year’s indie breakout Past Lives.
To make her point, she starts to script a scene between her future self and mine. “What’s going to happen is, in 20 years’ time, you and I are going to have a conversation again about a movie that I just made,” she tells me. “I just know that you’re going to say, ‘You remember when you were 35 and you were promoting your first movie, Past Lives?’ And we’ll just look at each other and we’ll see very vividly what each other was like.” As she envisions it, we’ll think about where we were at this exact moment — our loves, our stresses, our likely outdated haircuts.

"Everything will happen." Utopia has revealed the trailer for an indie gem from Cannes this year called The Sweet East, the new film from indie cinematographer / filmmaker Sean Price Williams. It premiered in the Directors' Fortnight at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, then went on to play at the Karlovy Vary, Melbourne, London, New York, Ghent, and Philadelphia Film Festivals this year. Here's the intro: "The mental, social & political disarray of the United States, filmed like a game of hopscotch or a variation on Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. High school student Lillian runs away on a school trip and, through a series of encounters, traverses the spectrum of contemporary radicalism & madness, from white supremacists to Islamic radicals, from neo-punks to woke avant-gardists." Talia Ryder stars as Lillian, with an eccentric ensemble cast featuring Earl Cave, Simon Rex, Ayo Edebiri, Jeremy O. Harris, Jacob Elordi, Rish Shah, Gibby Haynes, and Jack Irv.

Buzz around Sean Price Williams’ feature-directing debut The Sweet East has been high since its debut at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight. Working from a script by critic Nick Pinkerton, the aesthetic-defining Dp’s road trip finds Talia Ryder meeting a rogue’s gallery––Jacob Elordi, Simon Rex, Ayo Edebri, Jeremy O. Harris, and Andy Milonakis among them––and word’s consistently pegged it as one of 2023’s funniest. With Utopia releasing The Sweet East on December 1, there’s a trailer.
Rory O’Connor was taken with the film at Cannes, saying “Working from a script co-written with the influential critic Nick Pinkerton, Sean Price Williams’ punky directorial debut boasts both the cinematographer’s signature aesthetic and Pinkerton’s idiosyncratic, roguish worldview. Premiering this week in Directors’ Fortnight, The Sweet East––seemingly taking cues from John Waters––is cinema at its most playfully facetious, infectiously puerile, and flagrantly transgressive, and an early highlight...

There’s nothing as sweet as discovering the inner cults behind modern America. Or so it seems to acclaimed cinematographer Sean Price Williams, who makes his directorial debut with twisted coming-of-age dramedy “The Sweet East” that stars a who’s who of millennial–Gen Z talent.
Written by Nick Pinkerton, “The Sweet East” follows a high school senior Lillian (Talia Ryder) who hails from South Carolina and gets her first glimpse of the wider world on a class trip to Washington, D.C. Separated from her schoolmates, she embarks on a fractured road trip in search of America. Along the way, she falls in with a variety of strange factions, each living out their own alternative realities in our present day.

Inside Schiaparelli’s L.A. Party With Jennifer Lopez, Designer Daniel Roseberry and Evil Eye Cookies
“The relationship between fashion and celebrities can feel very transactional,” said Daniel Roseberry, the Hollywood-loved artistic director of Schiaparelli, at a party for the brand on Thursday, Oct. 12 in Los Angeles.
All around him at the event — held at the iconic Mayan-style John Sowden House in Los Feliz, designed in 1926 by Lloyd Wright — there were actresses aplenty wearing the label’s surrealist-infused looks.
Jennifer Lopez posed by the pool in a strapless corset dress with golden evil-eye details at the waist. Demi Moore chatted with Angela Bassett and the latter’s stylist Jennifer Austin by the bar, as waiters passed around cookies decorated to look like evil eye symbols, one of the house’s signature design codes. Elsewhere, Gabrielle Union, Taraji P. Henson, Olivia Wilde, Natasha Lyonne (with filmmaker and Xtr founder Bryn Mooser), Regina King and director Janicza Bravo all hung out in a lively large group.

Glee alum Dianna Agron was enjoying herself on the red carpet of the New York City Ballet Fall Gala on Thursday (October 5) night, but the same couldn’t be said for the photographers, who grew increasingly annoyed that the actress was blocking their shot of Sarah Jessica Parker. Agron is seen chatting on the red carpet in a clip that has since gone viral, with actor and playwright Jeremy O. Harris standing behind her. Meanwhile, off-screen, a group of photographers are heard yelling at Agron and others to move out of the way so they can snap a shot of the And Just Like That star. “You’re blocking an important photo,” one voice can be heard shouting. “There’s a very important photo right behind you, please.” “Excuse us! Excuse us!” others yell while one person sarcastically says, “Guys, you’re not in the way. You’re not in the way at all.

Fans are rightfully appalled by the way Dianna Agron was treated by photographers during her red carpet appearance at the New York City Ballet’s 2023 Fall Fashion Gala.
The 37-year-old Glee actress was yelled at by photographers upon the arrival of Sarah Jessica Parker at the event on Thursday night (October 5) at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater in New York City.
When Sjp showed up, Dianna was standing on the sidelines of the red carpet and chatting to fashion designer Wes Gordon‘s husband Paul Arnhold. Standing next to her was playwright Jeremy O. Harris, who was chatting with Oscar winner Ariana DeBose.
That’s when the photographers started yelling.

The best new show of 2022 was completely snubbed by this year’s Emmy nominations. AMC‘s Interview With the Vampire is adored by critics and fans alike, but it received no recognition from TV’s highest honor. The show has had a new surge in popularity a year after its release thanks to AMC+’s limited-time-only streaming deal with Max, bringing the series to new audiences who are now taking to social media to express their disbelief over what they’ve been missing. (Tony-nominated playwright Jeremy O. Harris gave it a glowing endorsement just this week.) This sumptuous Anne Rice adaptation that features arguably the best TV writing we’ve seen in years is not alone in its awards show snubs. In fact, it’s just the latest addition to the long list of genre shows that ...

It’s not much of a spoiler to say that the final image of Sean Price Williams’s solo feature directorial debut, The Sweet East, is that of Talia Ryder’s Lillian nonchalantly strolling toward and past the camera, a smirk on her face. That’s effectively the whole vibe of the film, an odyssey that traipses through the world of white supremacist academics, PizzaGate conspiracy theorists, self-satisfied filmmakers, mixed-media artists of questionable talent, and religious zealots. And as these various figure heads of a post-whatever world aspire to approximate, at once, political and social fragmentation, reactionaryism, delusion, provocation, and apathy, there Lilian is, eyes like butterfly knives being toyed with by a bored teenager.

From the mind of Olmo Schnabel — yes, he’s the son of artist and filmmaker Julian Schnabel — comes one of the most frustrating protagonists to grace an indie film screen this year. The impulsive black sheep of his family, Alejandro is played in the queer romance “Pet Shop Days” by Dario Yazbek Bernal. And if your nepo baby light wasn’t already blinking at the name Schnabel, Dario Yazbek Bernal is also the brother of Gael García Bernal.
After almost killing his mother in a car accident, Alejandro flees the scene of his mobster family’s moneyed party, thrashing his way through the lives of everyone else he encounters in the aftermath while on the run. That includes Jack (Jack Irv), a pet shop worker in crisis with his dying mother (Emmanuelle Seigner) and philandering father (Willem Dafoe), with whom he lives in a pricy Manhattan penthouse. Utopia has acquired North American rights to “The Sweet East,” a contemporary travelogue that marks the feature directing debut of Sean Price Williams. The sale comes after the film debuted at Director’s Fortnight during the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
Williams has a reputation as one of the most talented cinematographers in the independent film space, having previously worked with the likes of the Safdie Brothers, Alex Ross Perry, Michael Almereyda, Abel Ferrara and Albert Maysles. Here, he brings a script by cult film critic Nick Pinkerton to the screen.
Critics hailed the film as fresh and often funny, while praising the performance of Talia Ryder, who played a key supporting role in “Never Rarely Sometimes Always.” In “The Sweet East,” she plays Lillian, who runs away while on a school trip, encountering everyone from white supremacists and Islamic radicals to neo-punks and woke avant-gardists. The Center Theatre Group is pausing its season programming at its Mark Taper Forum theater and laying off 10 percent of staff across the theater company after experiencing sustained drops in ticket revenue and donations, alongside rising production costs following the pandemic.

It was Pride and Drag Queen picket day in Los Angeles, where around 300 people hit up Warner Bros. Discovery to highlight their issues as the strike marches into its second month.
The hundreds of writers attending the picket were provided glitter and stickers for their signs on the first day of Pride month. The event attracted the likes of Severance creator Dan Erickson to Yellowjackets star Liv Hewson.
“When queer writers are under attack,” chanted the crowd, “What do we do? Stand up, fight back.” Others added, “If we don’t get it, shut it down.”
Signs featured sayings such as “Protect All Queer Art” and “I’m Gay For Pay” as Whitney Houston’s I’m Every Woman blasted from a speaker system.

With Cobweb, South Korean genre stalwart Kim Jee-woon falls back on that old piece of received wisdom: “movie people, ain’t they crazy?” When in self-satirizing mode, it’s uncanny how often filmmakers will depict their industry and their working environment as a barely held-together farrago; if this were accurate, how many movies would actually be completed?
