The Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival awarded its best international feature film prize to Danish filmmaker Christian Einshøj’s The Mountains, a portrait of a Scandinavian family struck by a tragedy.
Einshøj also won the best emerging international filmmaker award at the Toronto festival, which handed out its top jury prizes on Saturday. Hot Docs opened its 30th edition with another Danish film, Twice Colonized, Lin Alluna’s feature about Greenlandic Inuit lawyer and protector of her ancestral lands, Aaju Peter, after a world premiere at Sundance.

Danish filmmaker Christian Einshøj’s “The Mountains” has won Hot Docs’ Best International Feature Documentary Award and a Cnd. $10,000 cash prize, it was announced this morning in Toronto at the festival’s awards ceremony, held at the TIFF Bell Lightbox.
Produced by Made In Copenhagen, the film is an autobiographical family portrait using 30 years of home video, 75,000 photos, and a superhero road trip to explore the tragedy that led to the emotional distance between the men in the family. “The Mountains,” which premiered earlier this year at Cph:dox, now automatically qualifies for consideration in the Academy’s Best Documentary Feature category without the standard theatrical run, provided it complies with Academy rules. Fresh off Sundance and a series of compelling interviews about how she chronicled the Covid-19 outbreak in China and its rampage across the the U.S., Nanfu Wang’s In the Same Breath will have its New York premiere as the opening film in the Museum of Modern Art’s Doc Fortnight 2021.

A group of international films that seem partially united by the theme of global awareness, this program is more of a mixed bag than most. Sadly, I was unable to preview the first film in the show, 2minutes40seconds, by Han Ok-hee. It’s from 1975, and it is a rare screening of work by the Kaidu Club, a feminist experimental film collective from South Korea. As with their Convergence section, the New York Film Festival offers an expanded view of the current cinema with yet another installment in their Projections series, a showcase of recent developments in and classic examples of experimental work from around the globe. These are hard to pin down as fitting particular types, and the only qualifier I can give is that whatever I manage to see from Projections stands as some of the most fascinating, enriching work I encounter at Nyff every given year.

Why are Luke Fowler’s films so hard to get a grip on? To start with, what you make of them depends on where you see them. Fowler inhabits that strange border zone between cinema and art, his work just as likely to appear in a standard screening situation as it is to be placed within an exhibition space. It’s no coincidence that the most notable nomination he’s received thus far in his career is not some film festival award but rather the Turner Prize. Yet given the dizzying range and quantity of references Fowler’s films often contain, any additional context is welcome. Fowler’s recent feature-length documentary To the Editor of Amateur Photography was, for example, commissioned by the UK’s first feminist photography centre; seeing this free-form institutional portrait exhibited within its very walls is obviously a very different proposition from seeing it at just another neutral film festival screening.

Held last month on March 24-29, the Ann Arbor Film Festival handed out awards to a gaggle of experimental films and filmmakers.
The big winner of the fest was Sicilian filmmaker Simone Rapisarda Casanova for his fiction/documentary hybrid film The Creation of Meaning, which won the overall Best of the Festival award. The film tells the story of a WWII survivor who lives as a shepherd in the Tuscan Alps.
The Best Narrative Film award went to Lonnie van Brummelen & Siebren de Haan’s Episode of the Sea, a neo-realist drama focused on the struggles of a tiny inland fishing community in the Netherlands. International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr) unveils Signals line-up including a tribute to Korean director Jang Jin and a focus on artist Bruce McClure.
International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr) has confirmed the Signals programme for its upcoming 44th edition (Jan 21 - Feb 1).
The final programme includes a tribute to Korean director Jang Jin, a focus on artist and filmmaker Bruce McClure and Made in Taiwan, a special addition to the annual Regained section.
Jang Jin is one of South Korea’s most famous modern playwrights and theatre directors and his films have included gangster movies and rom-coms. Iffr will host a 13-strong retrospective of his films including the European premiere of We Are Brothers.
Iffr’s focus on Bruce McClure will see the avant-garde artist present nine different performances on consecutive evenings under the generic title Opposition Brings Reunion. His presentation at Witte de With, Courting Daylight in Saving Darkness, is described as “his most elaborate and expansive...

The sixth annual Jarman Award has announced its shortlist of 10 UK contemporary artists.
They are Ed Atkins, Beatrice Gibson, Emma Hart, Rachel Maclean, Uriel Orlow [pictured], Charlotte Prodger, Hannah Sawtell, Grace Schwindt, John Smith and Jessica Warboys.
Film London and Channel 4 present the award in association with the Whitechapel Gallery. The shortlist is chosen from experts in contemporary film and arts sectors. The chair of the jury to select the winner is headed by Tate Modern film curator Stuart Comer.
The winner will be unveiled on Nov 6 and receivees £10,000 and a commission from Channel 4’s shorts strand Random Acts. Three other artists will be selected for Random Acts commissions as well.
A programme of works by the 10 shortlisted artists will tour the country from Sept 20 to Nov 3.
Previous winners include Luke Fowler, Lindsay Seers and James Richards.

The Ann Arbor Film Festival, having survived their half-a-century blowout in 2012, is back with another rip-roarin’ 51st edition in 2013, which will run from March 19-24, screening a mind-boggling amount of experimental short films and a few features.

It’s the 50th anniversary of the Ann Arbor Film Festival and they’re preparing an all-out blowout on March 27 to April 1 to celebrate! The fest is crammed to the gills with the latest and greatest in experimental and avant-garde film, in addition to a celebration of classic work from Ann Arbors past.
Filmmaker Bruce Baillie was there at the first Aaff — and numerous times since. He’s back this year with a major retrospective of his entire career that spans three separate programs. Baillie, who’ll be in attendance of course, will present a brand-new restored version of his epic pseudo-Western Quick Billy, plus screenings of his classic short movies such as Castro Street, Yellow Horse, Quixote, To Parsifal and more.
There’s also a program dedicated to the films of the late Robert Nelson, including Bleu Shut and Special Warning, as well as sprinklings of underground classics throughout...
