Exclusive: Thomas Cailley’s French box office hit The Animal Kingdom has continued its crowd-pleasing run to take the Audience Award prize at the 29th edition of Rendez-Vous with French Cinema in New York.
Set in a world where human beings start transmuting into animals, The Animal Kingdom world premiered as the opening film of Cannes Un Certain Regard in 2023 and went on to make more than $8.5M at the French box office.
Magnolia Pictures opens the fantasy drama, which went on to top the nominations for France’s 2024 César Awards with nods in 12 categories, in major U.S. markets on March 15.

Unifrance and Film at Lincoln Center have unveiled the lineup for the 29th Rendez-Vous with French Cinema, a festival celebrating contemporary French film running from Feb. 29-March 10.

Exclusive: New York-based cultural institution Villa Albertine and Unifrance have announced the selection of French features due to be showcased in the 10th edition of their joint Young French Cinema program.
The initiative aimed at promoting films in the U.S. by emerging French filmmakers without domestic distribution will showcase 11 titles this year.
They include Marie Amachoukeli’s Cannes Critics’ breakout Àma Gloria, Virginie Verrier’s female soccer pioneer bio-pic Marinette and Erwan Le Duc’s father and daughter tale No Love Lost.

Federation Studios has nabbed worldwide distribution rights to French political comedy and Series Mania winner Under Control.
The six-part series took home the award for Best Series in the French category at the Lille festival last week. Federation, which had Bardot and Six Women in competition for the same award, will now take it to the international market.
It follows Marie Tessier, a 45-year-old director of the fictional Ngo Doctors of the World, who is appointed France’s Secretary of State, just as five Europeans, including two French people, are taken hostage by terrorists in Sahel. She immediately goes rogue while striving to make it look like everything’s under control.
The show is produced by Ex Nihilo and written by Charly Delward in collaboration with Erwan Le Duc and César Award nominee Benjamin Charbit. Cast includes Léa Drucker, Samir Guesmi and Laurent Stocker.

Camille Degeye’s feature debut “Sphynx” won the Next Step Award as part of the program launched by Cannes’ Critics’ Week to help the directors of the 10 shorts which played during the last edition make their feature debut.
Degeye, who developed the script of “Sphynx” during the sixth session of Next Step in December, received the €5000 cash ($5616) prize from a jury comprising Michèle Halberstadt, co-founder of distribution banner Arp, Bérénice Vincent, co-founder of sales outfit Totem Films and Mathieu Robinet, a French distributor.
Along with receiving the cash prize, Degeve will also be invited to next year’s Cannes festival to promote her project. “Sphynx,” produced by Acéphale, was co-written by the journalist Luc Chessel. It tells the story of Eden, a young medical intern who stars working as a nurse for a trendy Parisian nightclub and falls in love with the Nidhal, a mysterious figure of Paris’s queer and underground world.

A perfectly charmant way to, as the song has it, forget about your worries and your strife for 100 airy minutes, writer-director Erwan le Duc’s “The Bare Necessity” is a breezy little sweetheart of a debut, that threatens to give the rather ominous description “quirky French romantic comedy” a good name. In its dappled countryside sunlight, even the most ostensibly twee elements — a bumbling local police force; a nudist colony; a historical reenactment society; an eccentric rural family with a matriarch whose radio show is dedicated to the breathy discussion of, what else, l’amour — are treated with an amiably deadpan affection that is infectious without ever becoming ingratiating.

The 2019 Driectors’ Fortnight lineup has been revealed, bringing with it new works from “The Witch” director Robert Eggers, Bertrand Bonello, Rebecca Zlotowski, and Takashi Miike. Fortnight is closely associated with the Cannes Film Festival although it is technically its own event that runs parallel to Cannes. Fortnight is celebrating its 51st year in 2019.
