As well as being joined on the stage by co-stars François Civil and Adèle Exarchopoulos and newcomers Mallory Wanecque and Malik Frikah, actors Jean-Pascal Zadi, Elodie Bouchez, Raphaël Quenard, Vincent Lacoste, Alain Chabat, Karim Leklou and Antony Bajon took up the front row of the press room.
They arrived on the wave of an enthusiastic response from the audience at Thursday night’s world premiere in the Grand Théâtre Lumière, which gave it a 15-minute standing ovation.
The modern Romeo and Juliet tale, which took Lellouche 17 years to bring to the big screen, is the actor and director’s third feature after hit comedy Sink or Swim.

This evening the Cannes Film Festival welcomed another world premiere of an ambitious French title with Beating Hearts (L’Amour Ouf). Gilles Lellouche’s competition entry from Studiocanal was greeted with a 15-minute standing ovation inside the Grand Théâtre Lumière.
The modern Romeo and Juliet tale co-stars François Civil, who featured as D’Artagnan in last year’s Three Musketeers reboot, and Blue is the Warmest Color’s Adèle Exarchopoulos. The pair play former childhood sweethearts from different sides of the tracks.
Having gone their separate ways when the boy gets caught up in gang violence and lands in jail on trumped-up murder charges, the couple reconnects against the odds years later.
Further cast includes Raphaël Quenard, Benoît Poelvoorde, Elodie Bouchez, Vincent Lacoste, Alain Chabat and Jean-Pascal Zadi.
The film is adapted from Irish writer Neville Thompson’s 1997 novel Jackie Loves Johnser Ok? which unfolded against the backdrop of Dublin’s tough...

The Swiss/French “Dog on Trial” is set to disrupt, move and entertain the Croisette from what is revealed in a first clip from sales outfit MK2 Films, exclusively shared with Variety.
The film world premieres at Cannes Un Certain Regard May 19.
Writer/actor-turned-director Laetitia Dosch, who delivered what Variety reviewer Peter Debruge called a ‘blazing-wildfire performance’ in the 2017 Camera d’or winner “Jeune Femme”, is herself taking a chance this year on the coveted award. Meanwhile Cosmos the Dog (aka Kodi in the film) will battle for the leather dog collar Palme Dog win.
As the main protagonist Alice, Dosch wears an attorney’s gown to defend the four-legged Cosmos, accused of multiple bite attacks. Known for taking up lost causes, she will rise to the challenge, confront the legal system and advocate both for animal rights and women’s rights.
Next to Dosch and the dog Kodi, the...

Quentin Dupieux’s chaotic, bizarre film about a monster-fighting squad controlled by a rat named Didier will greatly annoy some, which is one of its strengths
Only a pedant and a bore would complain that the last word of that title should be “cancer”. The phrase’s childlike naivety and irrelevance, apparently taken from an obsolete era when smoking was considered bad in the sense that eating cream cakes was bad, is a hint of what you’re in for: a fantastically silly and magnificently inconsequential comedy from French film-maker and former DJ Quentin Dupieux. For the life of me, I can’t think of another director right now who wants (or is allowed) to do just straight comedy for theatrical release, without having to buy the right to do so by also being unfunnily dark and disturbing.
Dupieux has put together something chaotic, disparate, entirely negligible yet oddly gripping and also funny.

"There's a weird vibe on this shoot." Ahahaha this film is so much fun! Kino Lorber has revealed their main official trailer for the US release of Final Cut, the French zombie comedy remake of the Japanese cult hit One Cut of the Dead. This first premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival (here's my review). Academy Award–winning writer-director Michel Hazanavicius brings one of the most innovative, joyful, and funniest love letters to film & filmmaking you'll ever see. It's a French remake of the Japanese box office hit One Cut of The Dead (which is also a must watch), going even deeper with its meta-ness by including the Japanese filmmakers watching them do this. It keeps the heart & humor of the original while delivering some of its own unique comedy as well. Coupez! John Waters raved that Smoking Causes Coughing is a “superhero movie for idiots,” and Bloody Disgusting has an exclusive clip that perfectly encapsulates the absurdist humor and violence that ensues when the Tobacco Force attempts to prepare for battle.
Written/Directed by Quentin Dupieux (Rubber, Deerskin, Mandibles), the absurdist, gory French comedy releases On Demand on June 27 from Magnolia Home Entertainment under the Magnet Label.
In the exclusive clip below, members of the plucky Tobacco Force team fumble their way through helmet removal to comically lethal results. It feels safe to assume that whoever this wacky superhero team goes up against might have the upper hand. With Dupieux behind it, we’d expect nothing less.

The two-day meeting, running June 22-23, comes hot on the heels of a successful Cannes Critics’ Week world premiere for Stéphan Castang’s thriller Vincent Must Die.
The film, which racked up strong sales and reviews, was on Wild West’s inaugural 2021 slate.
Goodfellas co-head Vincent Maraval and Capricci CEO Thierry Lounas created Wild West with the aim of developing and producing a pipeline of fast-turnaround, relatively low budget, French-language genre films.
The initiative grew out of their collaboration on Capricci’s So Film Genre screenwriting residency, which previously developed films such as Just Philippot’s 2020 breakout horror The Swarm.

"Mothers don't rap!" Gaumont has revealed an official trailer for a wacky French comedy called Yo Mama, and yes, that is indeed the real title for this (both in French and abroad). Shocked by the gangsta-rap video clip of their 11-year-old sons, three mothers decide to make a hip hop video of their own to restore the communication with their kids. Against all odds, these three best friends are a resounding success, all before being quickly overtaken by their sudden fame and this unfamiliar world. The film stars Claudia Tagbo, Zaho, Sophie-Marie Larrouy, plus Jean-Pascal Zadi and Ted Etienne. This is super duper cheesy, of course, but it doesn't look as bad as it seems. Looks kinda fun. Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review for the newly released “Smoking Causes Coughing,” an official selection of the Cannes Film Festival, and a ripe, necessary superhero genre parody. Currently in theaters, since March 31st.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
This is a French film that involves the Tobacco Force … five plasticine clad heroes who themselves look like the Power Rangers, fight evildoers who look like Japanese monsters from the 1950s, have an off-putting robot companion and use their powers of spraying cancer causing agents found in cigarettes. And that’s not all … they also tell stories that become a short film within the film … all having nothing to do with the heroes themselves.
”Smoking Causes Coughing” is currently in theaters, including (click link) Chicago’s Music Box Theatre through April 6th. Featuring Gilles Lellouche, Vincent Lacoste, Anais Demoustier, Jean-Pascal Zadi and Oulaya Amamra. Written and Directed by Quentin Dupieux. Not Rated.

For starters, they’re called the Tobacco Force, and these intergalactic “avengers” battle extraterrestrial monsters by giving them cancer via chemicals like nicotine, mercury and ammonia… but let’s assume that any similarities to other groups of helmeted, high-kicking heroes, living or dead, are not coincidental.

French filmmaker Quentin Dupieux has almost never steered us wrong with his droll satires like psychokinetic horror movie “Rubber,” about a murderous anthropomorphic tire, awards season satire “Reality,” or insectoid comedy “Mandibles.”
With his latest parody, “Smoking Causes Coughing,” the zany maestro also known as Mr. Oizo takes a puff off Marvel and other superhero IP by centering his bizarre comedy on a band of spandex-clad dimwits known as the Tobacco Force. It’s , even if not for all tastes, which he knows.
The ridiculously named fivesome are made up of Benzene (Gilles Lellouche), Nicotine (Anaïs Demoustier), Methanol (Vincent Lacoste), Mercury (Jean-Pascal Zadi), and Ammonia (Oulaya Amamra). We first meet them by happenstance, following a family on a road trip who stumble upon them battling a giant, rubber-made tortoise.
Everything looks cheesy by design, with Justine Pearce’s costumes stretching over-the-top artifice to its limits thanks to the giant, hulking tortoise,...

Smoking Causes Coughing is ostensibly a riff on Power Rangers/Super Sentai, Ultraman, and other tokusatsu-style media in which spandex-clad superheroes battle intergalactic monsters, but — as is the case with writer-director Quentin Dupieux’s entire filmography — his latest genre-bending slice of French absurdity is predictably unpredictable.
The Tobacco Force is a team of avengers in which each of its five members represents a different chemical found in cigarettes: Benzene, Nicotine (Anaïs Demoustier), Methanol (Vincent Lacoste), Mercury (Jean-Pascal Zadi), and Ammonia (Oulaya Amamra). When they’re unable to defeat an enemy in hand-to-hand combat, they call upon their powers — which only work when they’re sincere — to infect their foe with cancer to the point of bodily combustion.
The Tobacco Force has a mentor in Chief Didier. He’s a wise, mutant rat, like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles‘ Splinter, except Didier is a womanizer that drools green goo. The team is...

Netflix teased its slate of new European series, including Part 3 of hit heist show “Lupin” starring Omar Sy, during its showcase at Series Mania in Lille.
The standing room-only session — which featured two DJs on stage spinning tracks to a Netflix sizzle — was a “roadshow”-style presentation that featured a number of clips from the streamer’s forthcoming European shows, followed by a short panel with commissioners Katja Hofem from Germany, Damien Couvreur from France and Jenny Stjernströmer Björk from the Nordics. Each briefly discussed their new shows but didn’t go into detail about their editorial strategies.
Due to the exclusive nature of the clips, security was extremely strict at the session, with French guards shouting at delegates — including journalists — to put away any laptops and phones, making any reporting of the session virtually impossible.

When I first saw One Cut of the Dead, I didn’t think that in a couple of years’ time I would be watching a French remake of it, but here we are with Final Cut.
One Cut of the Dead blew me away when I saw it. Just the perfect original zombie movie, which, while it was well received, I do feel like it should have done even better and got more of a widespread audience. Remaking it such a short time later seems like a strange idea but getting renowned director Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist) definitely got some eyes on the movie that wouldn’t have been on it before it.

While at least half of the month’s film-related discussion will, unfortunately, be consumed by the endless Oscar race chatter, we’re here to cut through the noise and highlight gems worth seeking out in March. From a superhero film actually worth a watch to a fascinating archival documentary to highlights from not only this year’s Sundance but the 2022 edition as well, check out my picks to see.
15. Rodeo (Lola Quivoron; March 17)
One of the breakouts of last year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it premiered in the Un Certain Regard section and picked up a jury prize, was Lola Quivoron’s feature debut Rodeo. Starring Julie Ledru Kaïs, Yannis Lafki Ophélie, Antonia Buresi, Cody Schroeder, Louis Sotton, and Junior Correia, it follows a young woman who enters the underground world of dirt biking. Set for a NYC premiere at First Look, it’ll arrive later this month from Music Box Films.

Working at such a clip it can be hard to discern when his films actually arrive stateside and on what platform, Quentin Dupieux’s second movie of last year, Smoking Causes Coughing, will finally land in the U.S. next month and the first trailer has now arrived. Starring Gilles Lellouche, Anaïs Demoustier, Vincent Lacoste, Jean-Pascal Zadi, and Oulaya Amamra, the John Waters-approved film follows five superheroes known as the Tobacco Force – Benzene. After a devastating battle against a diabolical giant turtle, the Tobacco Force is sent on a mandatory week-long retreat to strengthen their decaying group cohesion. Their sojourn goes wonderfully well until Lézardin, Emperor of Evil, decides to annihilate planet Earth.
Leonardo Goi said in his review, “Teeming with all kinds of freaks and plots that toggle freely between the real and the absurd, Quentin Dupieux’s films are the work of an inveterate, shamelessly playful raconteur.

"Why are you wearing weird outfits?" Meet the Tobacco Force! They might just ruin your day. Magnolia Pictures has revealed an official US trailer for a wacky indie comedy from France titled Smoking Causes Coughing, one of the latest creations from director Quentin Dupieux. This is the second of the two brand new Dupieux films that premiered in 2022, the other being Incredible But True (which still has never been released in the US). A group of superhero vigilantes called the "Tobacco Forces" is falling apart. To rebuild team spirit, their leader suggests that they meet for a week-long retreat, before returning to save the world. Can they pull it off? This comedy plays like - what if Dupieux made an Avengers movie, but about cigarettes instead. Starring Gilles Lellouche, Anaïs Demoustier, Vincent Lacoste, Jean-Pascal Zadi, Oulaya Amamra, and Adèle Exarchopoulos. There's also a downbeat talking robot team member, who's voiced by Ferdinand Canaud.

Represent (En Place) is a series created by François Uzan and Jean-Pascal Zadi starring Jean-Pascal Zadi, Eric Judor, Benoît Poelvoorde and Fadily Camara. You can watch it on Netflix from January 20.
Represent is the new comedy that brings us to the most comical side of politics in this series which, at the very least, will make you laugh because it views politicians at their most ridiculous.
En Place is a parody with a well created script, characters and well paced, with that “French” touch that at times is so great and knows how to find that exact point of irony and elegance and at the same time, social critique.
This is a very entertaining comedy that is on Netflix and is like a very sharp dart that, under the guise of a comedy, goes straight to the heart of the “problem”, which is dealt with in an intelligent way and...

Final Cut, the French remake of writer/director Shin’ichirō Ueda’s highly acclaimed Japanese zombie comedy One Cut of the Dead, made its world premiere as the opening night film at the Cannes Film Festival back in May, then received a theatrical release in France in June. All these months later, we finally have some news about the film’s U.S. release. Variety reports that Kino Lorber has picked up the U.S. distribution rights to Final Cut, with their plan being to give the movie a theatrical release sometime in the summer. That will be followed by a digital and home video release on all major platforms.
Known as Coupez! in its home country, this remake of One Cut of the Dead was written and directed by Michel Hazanavicius, the Oscar-winning director of the Best Picture-winning silent film The Artist. (Hazanavicius also received a Best Screenplay nomination for that film.

After staging a vastly scaled-down version in 2020, organizers of the Cannes Film Festival brought buzz back to the Croisette last year as the industry dipped its toes into the annual French gathering. As the 75th edition kicked off May 17, many in the business are all-in on the in-person experience and there are plenty of completed films for sale.
Mubi took an early lead in acquisitions, scooping up Léa Mysius’s sophomore film “The Five Devils” and Park Chan-wook’s mystery “Decision to Leave” in recent weeks. Other films arriving with distribution include Brett Morgen’s David Bowie doc “Moonage Daydream,” from Neon. A24 has five films premiering at Cannes, including Alex Garland’s “Men” and Claire Denis’ “The Stars at Noon.”
Still up for grabs are films like “Hunt,” the directorial debut of “Squid Game” star Lee Jung-jae, and Arnaud Desplechin’s “Brother and Sister.”

Teeming with all kinds of freaks and plots that toggle freely between the real and the absurd, Quentin Dupieux’s films are the work of an inveterate, shamelessly playful raconteur. With ten features now to his name, the musician-turned-filmmaker has amassed an oeuvre whose leitmotif isn’t (just) the director’s penchant for the gonzo, but his passion for storytelling itself. Stories and storytellers abound in his latest, Smoking Causes Coughing. A Russian doll of tales-within-tales, it features one of Dupieux’s most bizarre concoctions yet—which, for a man that gave us a sentient killer tire (Rubber), an oversized fly-turned-pet (Mandibles), and a leather jacket with homicidal powers (Deerskin), is to say plenty. That’d be the Tobacco Force, a group of five superheroes who roam the Earth slaughtering monsters with the power of the toxic substances they borrow their names from—but which, curiously, none of them has ever consumed.

Absurdist director Quentin Dupieux is back with another bat sh*t crazy film, Smoking Causes Coughing (Fumer Fait Tousser). This film centers around a group of vigilante superheroes called the Tobacco Force. Through all the madness of his, like Rubber (a serial killing car tire), Deer Skin (where a guy hears his Deer Skin jacket speaks to him), or Mandibles (a film about a giant fly), there is always a hidden message under the surface. This time around, he’s addressing cigarettes, smokers, and stress. I mean, stress can cause smoking, and smoking can cause coughing. Makes sense to me. *shrug*

Netflix today provided a taste of its slate of original French productions coming up in 2022, which includes 25 new titles for launch this year and 20 projects currently in production. The slate, selected and developed by the Netflix France creative team, reps a total investment of more than 200M euros ($221M) across 2022. The streamer recently signed a deal with the French industry in which it committed to producing at least 10 local films per year, investing about 40M euros ($45M).
Among the projects highlighted during a presentation in Paris today was Romain Gavras’ formerly untitled feature, which is now called Athena. An immersive and modern tragedy, it stars Dali Benssalah, Sami Slimane, Anthony Bajon and is co-written with Oscar nominee Ladj Ly (Les Misérables) and Elias Belkeddar. The logline reads: In the space of a few hours following the tragic death of their younger brother in troubling circumstances, the men’s lives will tip over into chaos.

Throughout his career, French director Michel Hazanavicius has been more interested in mining film history than forging original paths. After parody riffs on spy films, recreating the silent film era, revisiting the careers of Fred Zinnemann and Jean-Luc Godard, and more, he’s now set his sights on remaking a recent Japanese hit for his next film.
Screen Daily reports the director has embarked on shooting a remake of Shinichiro Ueda’s zombie comedy One Cut for the Dead outside of Paris. Released in 2017, the movie follows a film crew making their own zombie horror film when real zombies turn up and the director keeps rolling. With a budget of just $25,000, it went on to gross over $30 million worldwide.
Led by Romain Duris, who will be playing the director, the film also stars Bérénice Bejo, Grégory Gadebois, Finnegan Oldfield, Matilda Lutz, Sébastian Chassagne, Raphaël Quenard, Jean-Pascal Zadi, Lyes Salem, Simone Hazanavicius and Luana Bajrami.

One week on, France’s industry is still responding to the hot-button Cesar Awards, the country’s equivalent to the Oscars.
French actor Isabelle Adjani, journalist Caroline Fourest and Rachel Khan, an actor and jurist, collectively wrote an op-ed arguing that the political undertone of some acceptance speeches made during the ceremony are breeding divisions within France.
Published in Elle magazine on Thursday, the letter — which doesn’t name anyone and maintains a fairly ideological tone — suggests that the ceremony’s political edge was detrimental to a sense of togetherness and universalism that, they argue, French cinema should promote.
“Almost everyone delivered a monologue that we expected from [them], as if it was a prerequisite to speak out about ‘our causes,’ or ‘our community,’ or ‘our followers,'” reads the op-ed. “As if it has become impossible to find words that speak to everyone. As if cinema can no longer unite.
