Hello once again, Daily Dead readers! Today, we’ve got four more fantastic genre short films that offer up a little bit of everything—killer robots, inept Satanists, obsessed housekeepers, and call girls who get more than they bargained for—as we once again turn our spotlight onto short-form storytelling with an assortment of gut-punch films that we do hope you enjoy.
For this installment of Daily Dead Salutes Your Shorts, we celebrate the recently released Saint Frankenstein from Scooter McCrae, the hilarious Born Again by Jason Tostevin, Rob McLellan’s horror/sci-fi mash-up Abe, and because this writer recently had the opportunity to see the feature film version, this felt like the perfect time to share Jon Knautz’s The Cleaning Lady, which is the short that helped put the wheels in motion for the feature that just recently premiered at Arrow Video’s UK FrightFest.

Filmmaker Rob McLellan will shortly be turning "Abe," a robot serial killer short film, into a full feature film at MGM.
Before he does that though he, visual effects man Craig Stiff and games studio HammerheadVR have been working on a little something extra on the side - a fan made "Star Wars" Vr game.

Good day, damners of all things disagreeable with your stomach. According to at least five websites, today is Name Your Poison Day, which is certainly the least Socrates-friendly holiday of the year. For the record, my poison is bourbon, and I.m naming it Zeppo. It.s also Best Friend Day... and my selection remains the same for that one. In mini-news, Universal.s Olivia Cooke-starring thriller Ouija is hovering ominously on an October 24, 2014 release date. Radius-twc has picked up David Robert Mitchell.s It Follows, which gained all kinds of acclaim at Cannes recently. The Strangers writer/director Bryan Bertino is writing a screenplay for VFX mastermind Rob McLellan.s serial killer robot flick Abe. And finally, The Bunnyman Massacre, the sequel to Carl Lindbergh's "loosely based on a real killer" 2011 film Bunnyman, is getting a DVD and VOD release from Midnight Releasing on August 12. Fans of horror and sci-fi and anything mildly original, prick up your ears, because The Strangers writer-director Bryan Bertino has been officially acquired by MGM to pen the feature length adaption of Rob McLellan’s short film, Abe.
The multi-talented McLellan, who works as a director, writer and in visual effects, received a positive response to his nine-minute short, which centers on a misguided robot with an evil streak. Abe only adds to the ever-growing list as to why artificial intelligence should remain emotionless.
The beauty behind the truly terrifying project is the fact it doesn’t rely on gore to shock its audience – as is the case with many films nowadays. It seems the horror genre as of late is laden with torture porn and found-footage movies, so it’s somewhat refreshing that such conventions are steered well clear of in this instance.
If anything, Abe‘s tendency to...

About a year ago we posted an incredible short film called Abe, a creepy killer robot tale directed by British filmmaker Rob McLellan. Now word has come that the proposed feature film version has gotten itself a writer!
Deadline reports that MGM has set The Strangers writer-director Bryan Bertino to script Abe, the feature based on the chilling short film by British writer/director/VFX artist Rob McLellan. McLellan will make his feature directing debut based on the short about a robot serial killer, and Kevin Misher and Steve Tzirlin will produce it. McLellan wrote the first draft, but the intention always was to bring in a genre heavyweight, and now they’ve got one in Bertino.
If you missed it, check out the original short film below, which plays out like I, Robot meets Maniac!

(Watch the film below.) Jonathan Glickman and Cassidy Lange will oversee for MGM, and Andy Berman and Kevin Chang will oversee for Misher Films, which produced Carrie for MGM and Screen Gems and is prepping a reboot of The Crow for Relativity.

Last August, MGM purchased the rights to the short film Abe which follows a robot serial killer. The short features only dialogue spoken by Abe himself as he readies his next victim, but the Rob McLellan directed film had more originality than a lot of movies that hit theaters. Since then, we haven't heard much but today comes news of a screenwriter coming in to punch up the screenplay. Bryan Bertino, writer and director of low budget horror hit The Strangers, will write a new draft of...

"But what if the serial killer was... a robot?!" It kind of sounds like the pitch for a fake Seinfeld movie, but it isn't. It's the premise of the short film Abe, and it actually makes a very haunting and compelling story. It would appear that MGM agrees, considering it has just acquired the rights to the project with the hopes of turning it into a feature-length film. You can watch the short created by Rob McLellan below, and we highly recommend you do. This isn't just some generic horror movie where the killer happens to be made of metal. This is a well-executed, thought-provoking look at obsession and what it means to be human, and it ends with one of the most chilling final lines we've heard in some time. We're not entirely sure how...

Now this sounds like a cool movie. Imagine a serial killer that cannot be killed and is not even human. That's right: a robot serial killer! Brilliant! MGM has just purchased the rights to make the feature length film version of the short Abe from writer/director Rob McLellan. The short follows the titular robot as he explains his motivations to his latest victim. Taking place in a single room with the robot doing all the talking, McLellan is able to create a major aura of tension and...

Another successful studio purchase for a fantastic sci-fi short film we featured earlier this year. In late April we posted the short film Abe from British filmmaker Rob McLellan, telling the story of a malicious but seemingly well-intentioned robot serial killer. Now, four months later, Deadline is reporting that McLellan has sold the rights to a feature version of the story to MGM, who will develop the project with Kevin Misher (Public Enemies, Carrie) and Steve Tzirlin (working on Ruin & R'ha) producing. The feature version of Abe will likely tell the complete story of Abe and how he came to work for the family he talks about in the short. Rob McLellan is a visual effects artist making the leap into filmmaking by writing/directing Abe. McLellan also has another spec script called Strings about time-traveling thieves that is being pitched, likely along with this. No other info was provided...

It sets your teeth on edge, but also leaves you wanting to see how this one turns out. Jonathan Glickman and Cassidy Lange will oversee for MGM and Andy Berman and Kevin Chang will oversee for Misher Films, which produced the Kimberly Peirce-directed Carrie for MGM and Screen Gems and is prepping a reboot of The Crow for Relativity. Tzirlin is producing Ruin at Fox with Maze Runner helmer Wes Ball.

Abe is a short sci-fi horror flick by London filmmaker Rob McLellan. It was pitched as “Silence of the Lambs involving a robotic serial killer” and does have that feel. Abe is a robot with a flaw, he’s murderous. That isn’t new territory for sci-fi involving robots, but it’s pulled off here with such terror because of the lack of context that it works on many levels. Mainstream movies take notice.
Rob McLellan has created a combination of drama sci-fi in Abe, it has a very clean VFX work to it and the message is clear: don’t give robots emotions!

Directed by Rob McLellan and starring Sam Hoare, Claire Huskisson, and Emily Baxter, Abe started life as a short film entry Love... and All That into the Colchester 48-Hour Film Challenge (which you can watch here) and evolved into an idea for a live action film. Here's a great short film you've got to watch called Abe, which tells the story of a twisted robot serial killer. The film was written and directed by Rob McLellan, and it was described by the person that sent it to us as Silence of the Lambs only the insane maniac is a robot.
We've all seen robots go crazy in movies before, many of them become hell bent on destroying the world, but this one is a lot different. This one features a robot that has the lust for blood. I can see a movie like this getting a feature film adaptation. Apparently, the director is working on it.

"They say that what I am doing is wrong, and I wish I understood what that meant." Dang, the sci-fi world is really heating up as we head into a summer movie season packed with sci-fi. Yesterday we featured a short titled Project Kronos, today we've got another outstanding new sci-fi short called Abe, that is a must watch. It was pitched as "Silence of the Lambs involving a robotic serial killer" and does have that feel. Made by a VFX artist named Rob McLellan, who did all the CG animation on his own, this is an impressive short and I would love to see the eerie story continue in a full feature. I expect Hollywood to take notice quick. Watch! Directed by Rob McLellan and starring Sam Hoare, Claire Huskisson and Emily Baxter. Why Watch? A young girl is strapped to a table with a few medical tools at her side. Her mouth is covered in duct tape. This set up has become so standard that it comes as a free template on screenwriting software, but where this beautifully smart short from writer/director Rob McLellan gets it right is in introducing us to a different kind of Hannibal Lecter. The killer’s plaintively polite introduction is the first cold shiver, and throughout an existential session of villainous monologuing, there are a handful more that crawl into your skin and find a place to live. The parallels are eerie — the disconnect, the drive to do something others say is wrong, the freezing lack of empathy beyond an infant’s understanding (and desire for) love. That’s all echoed by a character design that uses the uncanny valley to its favor. McLellan and Craig Stiff have crafted something human that’s...
