It wasn’t all that long ago that a billionaire buying a storied news publication was a sign of hope and optimism. After all, they had money to lose, and they earned their fortunes by creating something new. Maybe they could figure out how to make media work?
And what about private equity? It’s an industry premised on turnarounds: acquiring underperforming companies, reimagining them and making them succeed.
Or the classic family-owned publication: Keeping a business in the family with no goal of excessive profits, just a certain amount of stability to keep the legacy alive.
Unfortunately, it seems, no category of owner appears able to salvage a media business in decline, with business models still stuck in the past (programmatic, anyone?) and editorial models built for a world before Facebook, TikTok and artificial intelligence.

On Friday the storied publication Sports Illustrated began laying off staffers en masse as the outlet’s union warned that “possibly all” of its guild-represented staffers could be affected.
“Earlier today the workers of Sports Illustrated were notified that The Arena Group is planning to lay off a significant number, possibly all, of the Guild-represented workers at Si, a result of Authentic Brands Group (Abg) revoking Arena’s license to publish Si,” the NewGuild of New York, which represents about 80 editorial workers at the magazine, and the Sports Illustrated Union said in a statement early on Friday. “This is another difficult day in what has been a difficult four years for Sports Illustrated under Arena Group (previously The Maven) stewardship.”

Paramount Global is rolling out a new diversity reporting platform that has the potential to fill in major gaps in metrics on its television productions for everyone from writers and directors to wardrobe stylists and stunt workers.
On the corporate side, Paramount has already been publishing diversity data for its full-time employees — but productions, which typically include workers hired by third-party companies, lacked a universal system to access and analyze those same metrics and proved more challenging.
So Paramount created its own platform using Salesforce’s low-code developer tools, which is designed so that other media companies (and businesses in other industries) can also use it. The dashboard tracks diversity statistics of production suppliers — which also include production assistants, makeup artists, vendors, contractors and extras — across its brands in furtherance of its Content for Change initiative. The information is collected on a voluntary basis in connection with payroll, and the...

San Francisco, Feb 15 (Ians) Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff has admitted that laying off thousands of employees during a two-hour, all-hands meeting over a call was a bad idea.
The enterprise software company Salesforce in January laid off 10 per cent of its workforce, impacting about 7,000 employees, amid the ongoing global macroeconomic conditions.
In an interview with The New York Times, Benioff said the call wasn’t the best idea.
“We were trying to explain the unexplainable. It’s hard to have a call like that with such a large group and have it be effective, and we paid a price,” he was quoted as saying.
Salesforce employees had slammed Benioff for being evasive during the meeting.
“I wish I offered lifetime employment. But the reality is when you have a big company with 80,000 employees, there are going to be times you have to make a headcount adjustment. Our layoff packages are...

New Delhi, Feb 3 (Ians) Several Salesforce employees just came to know that they have been fired, as the company began laying off 7,000 workers or 10 per cent of its workforce as announced earlier last month.
Insider reported that 4,000 people have disappeared from Salesforcea’s Slack channel over the past two days.
In San Francisco, the layoff round hit 258 workers, affecting “sales and customer service”, “technology and product” and “general administration”, according to a Warn notice.
“Layoff posts flooded LinkedIn from across the country and around San Francisco on Thursday, as workers bid adieu to their Salesforce ‘ohana’ and placed “#opentowork” filters on their profiles, reports SFGate.
In Ireland, 200 of the company’s 2,100 employees received their notices.
Earlier, in a letter to employees, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff said that the environment remains “challenging” and our customers are taking a more measured approach to their purchasing decisions.

New Delhi, Jan 29 (Ians) As more and more Big Tech companies continue to sack employees, they have listed various reasons behind the move — over-hiring, uncertain global macroeconomic conditions, strong tailwinds from the Covid-19 pandemic and more.
Here is what these top tech firms say about firing employees:
Meta
“At the start of Covid, the world rapidly moved online and the surge of e-commerce led to outsized revenue growth. Many people predicted this would be a permanent acceleration that would continue even after the pandemic ended. I did too, so I made the decision to significantly increase our investments.
“Unfortunately, this did not play out the way I expected. Not only has online commerce returned to prior trends, but the macroeconomic downturn, increased competition, and ads signal loss have caused our revenue to be much lower than I’d expected. I got this wrong, and I take responsibility for that,” says...

New Delhi, Jan 7 (Ians) As crypto winter deepens, the non-fungible token (Nft) marketplace SuperRare is slashing 30 per cent of its workforce, its CEO John Crain has announced.

San Francisco, Jan 5 (Ians) Enterprise software company Salesforce has announced to lay off 10 per cent of its workforce, impacting more than 7,000 employees.
In a letter to employees, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff said that the environment remains “challenging” and our customers are taking a more measured approach to their purchasing decisions.
“With this in mind, we’ve made the very difficult decision to reduce our workforce by about 10 percent, mostly over the coming weeks,” Benioff wrote.
Last month, Benioff said that those who were hired by the company during the Covid pandemic are “facing lower productivity”.
In the letter to employees late on Wednesday, he said as the revenue accelerated through the pandemic, “we hired too many people leading into this economic downturn we’re now facing, and I take responsibility for that”.
“Within the next hour, employees who are initially affected by this decision will receive an email letting them know.

New Delhi, Dec 19 (Ians) Salesforce Co-founder and Co-CEO Marc Benioff has said that those who were hired by the enterprise software company during the Covid pandemic are “facing lower productivity”.
In an internal Slack message to employees, seen by CNBC, Benioff said the company’s newest hires aren’t being productive enough.
“How do we increase the productivity of our employees at salesforce? New employees (hired during the pandemic in 2021 & 2022) are especially facing much lower productivity. Is this a reflection of our office policy?” he asked employees.
“Are we not building tribal knowledge with new employees without an office culture? Are our managers not directly addressing productivity with their teams?”
Benioff wrote that he was “asking for a friend”, a phrase people use to reveal their curiosity about a topic.
“The message included an emoji showing a smiling face with a halo hovering over it, suggesting innocence,” according to the report.

San Francisco, Dec 11 (Ians) Salesforce, an enterprise software company, is reportedly preparing for another round of layoffs amid leadership changes, increased pressure to meet sales targets, and the influence of activist investors.
An employee said that “people are afraid it (layoffs) could come at any point”, reports Business Insider.
A person familiar with the matter said that the firm has pushed for cost-cutting measures since first approaching the company this summer, according to the report.
Back in November, the company laid off hundreds of employees, as Big Tech firms navigate through an economic slowdown.
Protocol first reported that Salesforce was preparing for a major round of layoffs that could affect as many as 2,500 employees.
The company, however, told media publications that the job cuts affected “less than a thousand” employees.
The company had 73,541 people on its payroll earlier this year.

Lars Ulrich faced a conundrum when Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff invited him to be a guest for one of his company’s fireside chats this week. Usually Benioff’s musical guests have been playing a song at the end of the interviews, which are broadcast on Salesforce’s social media channels, and the Metallica drummer didn’t know what he wanted to bring to the table. “I’m like, ‘Nobody wants a fucking drum solo,'” Ulrich tells Rolling Stone with a laugh. “It’s just kind of not the...

California’s Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Friday the formation of an 80-person task force to develop economic recovery strategies amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic — and that group includes at least one or two well-known Hollywood executives.
Disney executive chairman Bob Iger and Apple CEO Tim Cook will participate in the task force, which will be co-chaired by billionaire investor and philanthropist Tom Steyer.
“We recognize that if we are going to learn anything from the past, it’s not to repeat the mistakes of the past and have a sustainable mindset, not just a situational mindset,” said Newsom in a press conference. “In terms of how we recover, it is in the ‘how’ we recover that I think ultimately we will be judged, and judge ourselves, and I think that is the spirit of the group of people and advisers we’ve put together.”

As temperatures rise and wildfires rage from Canada to Australia, forests have become a symbol of danger in a warming world. They may also be one of our best hopes for capturing and storing the unsustainable levels of carbon dioxide that humans have released into the atmosphere. “If we can do it right,” says British ecologist Thomas Crowther, “the conservation and restoration of forests can potentially buy us some time as we try to decarbonize our economies.”

Time Magazine shared its annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world on Wednesday, with CBS News anchor Gayle King, screenwriter Ryan Murphy and model Chrissy Teigen among those being honored.
Each honoree was accompanied by a small essay of tribute penned by a notable peer. For King, it was director Ava DuVernay, “American Horror Story” actress Jessica Lange paid tribute to Murphy, while for Teigen, it was Le Bernardin co-owner and master chef Eric Ripert paid tribute.
In her tribute, DuVernay lauded King’s ability to enhance her role as a journalist by not taking the spotlight for herself.

More than 50 women have filed suit against Salesforce, an online customer management relationship provider, alleging that the company’s data tools helped facilitate sex trafficking on the now-defunct website Backpage.

In an era when coverage of President Donald Trump saturates the cable-news spectrum, viewers know they can turn to CNN to get the latest reactions from politicians and analysts. Increasingly, they’ve also been able to hear from some of the titans of Silicon Valley.
Laurie Segall has nabbed sit-downs with tech moguls like Apple’s Tim Cook and Salesforce.com’s Marc Benioff at a time when such stuff would be the province of CNBC or a few business-news outlets (Cook has on occasion granted interviews to ABC News’ David Muir). Now Segall’s tech-news acumen will get a TV spotlight when CNN runs a special documentary report, “Facebook at 15: It’s Complicated,” which is scheduled to air Sunday February 10 at 9 p.m. eastern. The program features never-before-seen interviews with top Facebook executives, including Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg.
Segall credits her ability to snare the interviews to a few simple facts.

Al Gore, Vice-President of the United States (1993-2001), Chairman and Co-Founder, Generation Investment Management, sounded the alarm bells today, proclaiming a “true, full-blown global emergency” for the planet’s oceans.
“That reflects what the scientific community has been telling us,” he said, “and their predictions have been right in the past.”
The prominent environmental activist warned that global warming now traps the equivalent heat energy of 500,000 Hiroshima-class atomic bombs every day. As oceans warm, the impact on humanity is devastating, he said, with more common extreme weather events and food scarcity resulting from lower oxygen levels, and migrations and die-offs of vital fish stocks. “Apologies to Las Vegas,” said Gore, “but what happens in the ocean doesn’t stay in the ocean.”
Other experts echoed the urgency of Gore’s message. “If everyone knew how serious this is, everyone would be activists,” said Nina Jensen, Chief Executive Officer of Rev Ocean.

Publishing giant Meredith has finalized the sale of Fortune Magazine for $150 million to Thai businessman Chatchaval Jiaravanon.
Jiaravanon surfaced in October as a buyer after Marc Benioff and his wife pivoted to a purchase of Time magazine instead of buying Fortune. The Time deal for $190 million closed in November.
Des Moines, Iowa-based Meredith previously stated it would sell Fortune, Time, Sports Illustrated and Money, titles it acquired in its $2.8 billion Time Inc acquisition. Meredith will use the proceeds to pay down debt.
Fortune will become part of the new Fortune Media Group.
Jiaravanon is one of the richest men in Thailand, the son of the executive chairman of Thailand’s Charoen Pokphand Group.
Meredith Corp. earlier this year said it planned to lay off 1,200 workers by year-end and explore the sale of the four key brands. Meredith claimed the titles in question don’t fit with its established target audiences and advertising plans,...

After Meredith Corp. nabbed Time Inc., the publisher has sold the magazine to Salesforce.com co-founder Marc Benioff and his wife Lynne Benioff for the handsome price of $190 million.
The sale is expected to close within 30 days and the Benioffs are buying the publication as individuals, according to the Wall Street Journal. The purchase is unrelated to Salesforce.
The sale comes only eight months after Meredith has nabbed the 95-year old publication. Meredith previously tried to acquire Time Inc. in 2013, but allegedly balked at bundling Time, Fortune, Sports Illustrated and other major titles into the deal.
According to the WSJ, Benioff said that he and his wife are “investing in a company with tremendous impact on the world, one that is also an incredibly strong business.”
He added, “That’s what we’re looking for when we invest as a family.”
