Man of Steel 2013 box office: $250 million milestone in North America (photo: possibly after his Man of Steel workout, Henry Cavill chats with director Zack Snyder) Directed by Zack Snyder, and starring Henry Cavill, Man of Steel passed the $250 million milestone at the North American box office on Monday, July 1, 2013. On that day, Man of Steel added $3.04 million, for a domestic cume of $251.62 million, according to figures found at Box Office Mojo. After adding another $2.78 million on Tuesday, July 2, the Superman reboot’s domestic total currently stands at $254.4 million. Not adjusted for inflation, Man of Steel is no. 28 on Box Office Mojo’s chart of the fastest movies to reach $250 million at the North American box office: 18 days. The no. 1 title is Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, with 6 days. Other movies that also took 18 days to reach $250 million — years ago, when ticket prices were lower — are Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers...

Monsters University and World War Z box office: Monsters hungry for knowledge and zombies hungry for humans bring down Man of Steel Here’s a quick rundown of this past weekend, June 21-23, 2013, at the North American box office. If studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo are on target, Pixar / Disney’s Monsters University surpassed expectations, grossing $82 million at 4,4004 locations. Approximately 30% of the gross came from 3D shows. (Image: Monsters University artwork.) Directed by Dan Scanlon, Monsters University features the voices of John Goodman, Helen Mirren, Billy Crystal, Nathan Fillion, Aubrey Plaza, Steve Buscemi, John Krasinski, Peter Sohn, Dave Foley, Sean Murray, Bonnie Hunt, Julia Sweeney, Sean Hayes, Alfred Molina, Tyler Labine, Bill Hader, Bob Peterson, and John Ratzenberger. Screenplay credit for the Monsters, Inc. sequel has gone to director Scanlon, Daniel Gerson, and Robert L. Baird. Starring Brad Pitt as a man having a number of close encounters of the living-dead kind,...

World War Z weekend box office: Monsters rule, but zombies are the big surprise hit (photo: Brad Pitt in World War Z) World War Z, Brad Pitt, and his living-dead pals have turned out to be the big (happy) surprise at the North American box office this weekend, June 21-23, 2013. In case Friday’s estimates are on target, the $190-$200 million-budgeted World War Z should collect $57-$60 million by Sunday evening, or about $10-$15 million more than many pundits had been expecting. Yesterday, World War Z opened with $25 million — about $5 million above early estimates — from 3,607 locations according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. That figure includes $3.6 million from Thursday evening screenings. In case there’s a Saturday surge for Marc Forster’s Paramount-distributed PG-13 zombie movie, World War Z could actually go quite a bit beyond the $60 million mark. That’s good news for the studio and for producer Brad Pitt,...

World War Z box office vs. Monsters University vs. Man of Steel (photo: Brad Pitt in World War Z) The North American box office will be huge this weekend, June 21-23, 2013. You’ve surely read that elsewhere, and it’s no exaggeration. The combined gross of the top three movies alone — Monsters University, World War Z, Man of Steel — should hover around $180 million. Now, what remains to be seen is if there’ll be any dollars (whether Canadian or American) left for the dozens of other movies on North American screens. It’s like having huge supermarkets making little neighborhood stores disappear from view. But hey, that seems to be exactly what the moviegoing public wants. According to early, rough estimates found at Deadline.com, Disney / Pixar’s Monsters University will easily top the domestic box office following a Friday gross around $25-$28 million, in addition to $2.6 million from Thursday evening screenings.

Man of Steel box office to reach $150 million in North America today (photo: Dylan Sprayberry as the young Clark Kent in Man of Steel) Directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill in the title role, Man of Steel will undoubtedly pass the $150 million milestone at the North American box office on Tuesday, June 19, 2013. Partly boosted by 3D surcharges, after about four and a quarter days (including $12 million from Thursday evening screenings), Warner Bros.’ $225 million-budgeted Man of Steel has taken in $141.26 million from 4,207 Us/Canada locations, including $12.58 million on Monday as per Box Office Mojo. For comparison’s sake: From Friday-Monday, without the advantage of box-office-inflating 3D surcharges, Jon Favreau / Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man earned $105.55 million, or about $117 million today. So, if the 3D surcharges* are deducted from Man of Steel‘s Friday-to-Monday total, the 2013 Superman reboot would be left with $116.34 million. In other words, the $140 million-budgeted Iron Man...

Man of Steel weekend box office: Above estimates, but real June record remains beyond the reach of Superman 2013 reboot (image: Henry Cavill as Superman in Man of Steel) Somewhat surprisingly — it’s usually the other way around — Warner Bros.’ Man of Steel grossed more than $3 million above studio estimates released on Sunday, June 16, 2013. Directed by Zack Snyder (300, Sucker Punch), and starring Henry Cavill (The Tudors, possibly the upcoming The Man from U.N.C.L.E.), the 2013 Superman reboot scored $116.61 million from 4,207 North American locations according to weekend box-office actuals found at Box Office Mojo. Once Thursday evening figures are added, the $225 million-budgeted Man of Steel‘s domestic cume reached $128.68 million by Sunday evening. Now, Man of Steel‘s adjusted $116.61 million doesn’t change the June Box-Office Record Chart in any way. The Superman reboot remains ahead of the former official June champ, the Tom Hanks-, Tim Allen-voiced Toy Story 3‘s...

Henry Cavill Superman: Man of Steel vs. Superman movies of years past [See previous post: "Man of Steel Trailing Original Iron Man in Ticket Sales."] As mentioned in our previous posts, the $225 million-budgeted Man of Steel grossed an estimated $113.08 million this past weekend, including $9 million from Thursday midnight screenings. Directed by Zack Snyder, the 2013 Superman reboot stars Henry Cavill as Clark Kent aka Superman. (Photo: Henry Cavill in Man of Steel.) Released in late June 2006, Bryan Singer’s $270 million-budgeted Superman Returns, starring Brandon Routh as Superman, debuted with $52.53 million, or about $64 million today. Even taking into account that Superman Returns lacked the box-office-boosting advantage of 3D surcharges, Man of Steel is obviously a much bigger hit than its immediate predecessor. Superman Returns eventually reached $200.08 million in North America, plus a slightly more modest $191 million internationally. Man of Steel will not only easily surpass Superman Returns at the domestic box office, but it’ll also earn at the very least twice as much as Superman Returns internationally.

Henry Cavill Man of Steel to trail Robert Downey Jr in Iron Man 3 [See previous post: "Man of Steel Weekend Box Office: June Record May Not Be Broken."] As long as it grosses at least $100 million by Sunday evening — and that’s a given — Zack Snyder / Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel will boast the second-biggest opening of 2013, behind only Shane Black / Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man 3, which collected $174.14 million in early May according to Box Office Mojo. As mentioned in the previous post, Man of Steel is expected to score anywhere between $115-$140 million. Note: Figures for both Man of Steel and Iron Man 3 include Thursday evening shows. (See updated posts: “Man of Steel trailing Original Iron Man” and “Man of Steel vs. Superman movies of years past.”) (Photo: Henry Cavill Superman in Man of Steel.) Man of Steel vs. Superman Returns (photo: Amy Adams as Lois Lane in Man of Steel) [See previous post: "Man of Steel Box Office: June Record Likely (Sort of)."] Released in late June 2006, Bryan Singer / Brandon Routh’s Superman Returns opened with $52.53 million, or about $64 million today. Even taking into account that Superman Returns lacked the advantage of box-office-inflating 3D surcharges, Man of Steel will clearly soar much higher. (See updated post: “Man of Steel to Trail Iron Man 3: Box Office” — and possibly to trail the original Iron Man as well.) Superman Returns cumed at $200.08 million in North America, in addition to $191 million internationally. Considering the exponential growth of the international market in the last decade, expect Man of Steel to earn much more outside of than in North America. Remember, without the international market, movies that cost $225 million (not including marketing and distribution expenses) would likely never, ever get made. Directed by Richard Donner and starring Christopher Reeve in the title role,...

Man of Steel box office: Will latest Superman reboot break June domestic record? (Photo: Henry Cavill in Man of Steel) Directed by Zack Snyder, and starring Henry Cavill as Superman, Man of Steel had, as expected, a strong opening at the domestic box office on Thursday evening. The latest Superman reboot collected an estimated $12 million, in addition to another $9 million at midnight showings for a grand total of $21 million. For comparison’s sake: Starring Robert Downey Jr, Shane Black’s Iron Man 3 debuted with $15.6 million from Thursday evening / midnight showings in early May. (See also updated post: “Man of Steel Box Office: June Record Likely — Sort of.”) Now, to compare Man of Steel‘s Thursday late evening $21 million take to the midnight box-office grosses of, for instance, Gary Ross / Jennifer Lawrence’s The Hunger Games ($19.74 million), Robert Pattinson / Kristen Stewart / Taylor Lautner’s The Twilight Saga: Eclipse ($30.1 million), Christopher Nolan...

Henry Cavill Man of Steel: Relative big-screen newcomer Cavill handicapped by Zack Snyder’s green-screen focus [See previous post: "Man of Steel Review: Superman Movie Sensory Enhanced, Heart Deprived."] Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, and Diane Lane (as Clark’s adoptive mother) are all Oscar-nominees and/or winners with the ability to thrive under the distracted eye of a director who only cares about lining up the next green-screen shot. Less so in the case of relative newcomer Henry Cavill. The man is an undeniably gorgeous specimen and he looks just right in the beautifully-designed Superman suit by costumers James Acheson and Michael Wilkinson. What doesn’t fit so well is Superman conforming to the Nolan-inspired, Warner Bros.-approved mold of dark, conflicted superhero that does neither Cavill nor Superman any favors. (Photo: Henry Cavill Man of Steel.) At his best, Kal-El is a combination of troubled teenager trying to find his place in the world and Christ figure charged with saving humankind.

A new set of stills from Man of Steel has been released.
Zack Snyder's "realistic" take on the Superman story stars Henry Cavill as Clark Kent, and Amy Adams as Lois Lane.
In addition to Cavill and Adams, the images also feature Cooper Timberline and Dylan Sprayberry as the 9-year-old and 13-year-old incarnations of Clark respectively.
The pictures also offer glimpses of Antje Traue as Faora, and Ayelet Zurer as Clark's biological mother Lara Lor-Van.
Michael Shannon recently told Digital Spy he believes, having seen the finished film, that Cavill was "born to play Superman".
Snyder has suggested that Cavill's Superman needs to become more established - presumably by appearing in a sequel - before a Justice League ensemble movie can move forward.
Man of Steel will be released on June 14.

Source: IGN I picked up this story over at the DC Movies fan page but it originally comes from IMDb so I'm not sure how accurate it is. The rest of their cast list for the movie is spot on though so there is nothing to suggest this isn't. According to them Cooper Timberline will be playing a 9 year old Clark Kent, which of course means flashbacks to Supes' time as a young whippersnapper back in Smallville. This is a plot device which has been used in pretty much all previous Superman movies and something many felt would be left out of this reboot altogether. 10 year-old Timberline has previously starred in two films; The Rose and Metanoia.. He is also currently filming Of Men and Mavericks which stars Jonny Weston, Gerard Butler and Elisabeth Shue. This casting has not yet been verified by anyone in the Snyder or WB camp...
