Katori Hall’s “P-Valley,” a show about the female dancers at The Pynk, a popular strip club in Mississippi, uses music to shine a spotlight on southern female rappers and artists.
In putting together the soundtrack for the series, music supervisors Sarah Bromberg and Stephanie Diaz-Matos turned to the show’s stars, J. Alphonse Nicholson and Loretta Devine, as well as Beyoncé and Megan Thee Stallion, to curate the anthems for Brandee Evans’ Mercedes, Elarica Johnson’s Autumn Night and Nicco Annan’s Uncle Clifford.
Here, Bromberg and Diaz-Matos break down how they landed Beyoncé and other needle drops for the show’s second season.

When viewers of Starz drama series “P-Valley” first meet protagonist Mercedes, she has been a central figure at the Pynk strip club for years and is considering retirement.
To tackle the role, Brandee Evans needed to embody not only a talented, strong and commanding performer, but she also had to have the attitude of the “O.G.,” says choreographer Jamaica Craft.
“You dance with floss and you’re throwing yourself around the pole, doing incredibly gymnastic movements, and you’re confident when your legs open up, you’re confident when you pull your head back, all of those things,” she says. “I wanted Brandee to have the power as she moved — that, ‘I’m here’ personality. She’s the main superhero of this club.”
Evans came into the show with an extensive background in dance, which was important for the level of discipline the performer portraying Mercedes had to have,...

Katori Hall hired all women to direct her strip club dramedy “P-Valley” for Starz because she wanted to ensure the series showcased its stripper characters through an empathetic lens.
Although the playwright-turned-series creator and showrunner tells Variety she “did try to hire men,” during interviews she asked, “What is your definition of the female gaze? And I would say 10 times out of 10, the men did not have an answer to that question.”
“And so, knowing that was my goal, to show this world through the eyes of women, I knew that I really had to pick artists and interview directors who were passionate about that and had already started investigating that gaze within their own work, and so naturally, the hiring practice quickly became all-female,” she explains.
“P-Valley” is inspired by Hall’s 2015 play “Pussy Valley” about the lives of strippers in the Mississippi Delta. The series explores the mystery...

Tiana’s club performance of “Do Something With It” on last night’s mid-season finale of Empire was, like most Empire performances, flashy. But director Sanaa Hamri wanted something to make it unforgettable.“Hoverboards!” Hamri, also an executive producer on the show, said while editing the scene in the show’s Beverly Hills production office in late October. She recalled sharing her idea to incorporate the trendy electric scooters with choreographer Jamaica Craft. “She looked at me and went, ‘What?’ and I started doing weird movements. I looked crazy, but she somehow understands my interpretive dancing. It looks like I’m a rain man. I wanted the dancers to slide.” It’s what Craft has come to expect working with Hamri, who holds an unusual executive-producing position on Empire, acting as the musical liaison between the writers room, the music producers, actors, and performers. In essence, she is Empire’s...
