Captain Canuck has been around since the mid 70's but his career has had numerous starts and stops. Not surprising considering the brainchild of Ron Leishman and Richard Comely has always been an independent comic. Over the years, there have been a number of incarnations of the character, all of them sadly short-lived, gaining the Canadian super-hero quite a few fans all whom await the next adventures of Captain Canuck. I only wish I could relay news of the Captain's resurgence with a little less caution and more optimism. [Continued ...]...

Despite the fact that many critics predicted superhero movies were a fad that would quickly run its course, 2012 is likely going to be the biggest and best year yet for the genre, with The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises almost guaranteed to come in at #1 and #2 (though not necessarily in that order) at the box office this year. To satisfy the insatiable appetite of today's moviegoers for slick, intelligent, action-packed superhero thrill rides, most of the major studios are readying the next wave of superhero movies: Marvel Studios is currently in production on Iron Man 3 and in pre-production on Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier; 20th Century Fox is in pre-production on The Wolverine and the as-yet-untitled sequel to X-Men: First Class (Deadpool is still in limbo); Warner Bros. is in post-production on Man of Steel and developing movies based on The Flash and...

Look! Up in the sky! It.s a bird! It.s a plane! It.s . Captain Canuck? Doesn.t quite have the same ring to it, does it? But that.s not going to stop Mind.s Eye Entertainment from bringing Richard Comely.s Canadian comic-book hero Captain Canuck to the big screen in hopes of stealing some audience members away from The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises. The Vancouver Sun reports that screenwriter Arne Olsen will tackle script duties, saying that with the success of alternate comic book properties, things are .really fortuitous for us in terms of timing.. Yes, the industry does seems to be obsessed with comic-book properties. The announcements of Marvel.s .Phase Two. at Comic-Con last weekend was greeted with near-Biblical enthusiasm. And D.C. Casino Royale baddie Mads Mikkelsen has dropped out of an unspecified villain role in director Alan Taylor's Thor sequel.
Mikkelsen says he is committed to the upcoming NBC prequel series Hannibal - in which he plays the younger Dr Hannibal Lecter - and can't take on both projects.
Revealing that he was no longer involved with Thor 2, the 46-year-old Danish actor (pictured) told Zoomin TV: "That's not happening, unfortunately. I had a meeting with them, but they were a little too late. And then Hannibal came in, and everything just came in the same period, so now it's not happening."
Thor 2 starts filming in August and is released on November 8, 2013.
And while Marvel Studios also gave us Captain America, which has a sequel on the way, there are superheroic captains in other nations too, including Captain Britain.
But it's Canada's own Captain Canuck who's next heading to the big screen.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Canadian screenwriter Arne Olsen (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie) has signed on to write the live-action big screen adventures of Captain Canuck. Mind's Eye Entertainment are producing the adaptation which based is on Richard Comely's 1975 creation. This isn't the first time that the character has been optioned for either film or television, but definitely the closest it has come to actually happening. Three characters have worn the maple leafed costume of Captain Canuck. Described as a cross between Captain America and Flash Gordon, the first Captain Canuck patrols Canada in the (then) futuristic world of 1993, where "Canada had become the most powerful country in the world." He was the costumed agent of the Canadian International Security Organization (Ciso). [Wikipedia] Stories featuring the character have been published sporadically over the years, but he has developed something of a fan following nonetheless.
