Pedro Almodóvar’s El Deseo is teaming up once again with Peru’s most prominent producer, Tondero, to co-produce Peruvian filmmaker Salvador del Solar’s second pic after his lauded feature debut, “Magallanes.”
Titled “Un lugar para Ramon” (“A Place for Ramon”), the drama is set against the backdrop of Peru’s months-long Covid-19 lockdown where two men, a Peruvian national who is confined to his apartment with the ashes of his estranged father, meets a Spaniard who is unable to leave the country because Lima’s airport has been shut down.
Thrown together by the unusual circumstances, their friendship evolves into deeper and more ambiguous terrain.
“I would liken it to two beings stuck on an island together where they are isolated and detached from the rest of the world,” said Del Solar who wrote the script with Hector Galvez, best known for directing and/or writing “Nn” and “Paraiso.

In what marks the most ambitious film from Peru’s leading producer Tondero and, most likely, Peruvian cinema in recent times, Pedro Almodóvar’s El Deseo, Infinity Hill (“Argentina 1985”) and Tondero have joined forces to co-produce a drama based on the hostage crisis that took place at the Japanese embassy in Lima in 1996.
El Deseo executive producer Esther Garcia and Infinity Hill co-founder/chief creative officer Axel Kuschevatzky were in Lima to attend Tondero’s 15th anniversary festivities and for Garcia to receive a tribute from the ongoing 27th Lima Film Festival, which runs Aug. 10-18.
The still-untitled project has been co-written by Spain’s Alicia Luna and Peru’s Santiago Roncagliolio, Patricia Romero and Lima Film Fest artistic director Josué Mendez who together spent some four years delving into the facts behind the crisis that drew massive international attention at the time.
The incident spawned several works in literature and film.

Spurred by modest state funds, growing TV support and co-production pacts, filmmaking in Peru is on the rise and with it, a rousing presence on the international stage.
Peruvian pics snagged six awards at March’s Malaga Film Festival and industry component Mafiz, an unprecedented haul for the event’s country guest of honor.
Plaudits went to Mauricio Frey’s “Estados generales,” Francesca Canepa’s “La otra orilla,” Ximena Valdivia’s “4eber,” documentary “Hatun Phaqcha” by Delia Ackerman and Leonardo Barbuy’s “Diogenes.”
“This is the first time that Peru has brought back so many awards from a single event,” notes Erika Chavez, head of the culture ministry’s audiovisual directorate, Dafo, who points out both national and regional films funds have ticked up since launching alongside Peru’s 2019 Film Law.
“More of us have been actively participating in markets, development labs and co-production forums,” says Enid “Pinky” Campos of Chullachaki Cine,...

Peru as a filming location can be viewed before and after the making of “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” where a good chunk of the seventh iteration in the Paramount Pictures franchise is set in the picturesque country.
Directed by Steven Caple Jr. (“Creed II”), the upcoming “Transformers” is said to have injected an estimated 10 million-plus into Peru’s economy. More importantly, it prompted the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to issue a new artistic production visa that provides special migratory status to visiting crew and talent, which in turn, facilitates the import of equipment and props. More than 30 vehicles, including trucks, high speed cars, motorbikes and Vw classics, were shipped to Peru for the sci-fi movie. In the past, people had to use a journalist visa to work on audiovisual projects in the country, which was cumbersome, says producer Bruno Canale of Apu Prods., which provided production services to the reportedly 200 million pic.

The Guadalajara Film Festival’s industry centerpiece, its Encuentro de Co-produccion, a springboard for Latin American feature film projects, unspools this week online, as directors and producers look to catch the eye of the international marketplace and secure key sales, distribution and production partners.
Guadalajara has long rejected the idea that gender-based quotas are needed when programming a festival while demonstrating an organic level of inclusion in its industry sections that should make some European festivals blush. The 2020 Meeting is no exception. More than half of the projects set to pitch this week are directed by women, with just as many featuring female producers or co-producers.
As important as any statistics though, the kinds of films that women are pitching at Guadalajara break moulds as well. Gone are the days when the industry expected women directors to tell women’s stories. Now, the women pitching at Guadalajara can present horror,...
