The Tribeca Festival started in the shadow of Sept. 11, as founders Robert De Niro, his longtime collaborator Jane Rosenthal and real estate investor Craig Hatkoff (at the time married to Rosenthal) attempted to bring commerce and culture back to Lower Manhattan.
In the years since, it has exploded in popularity and importance, with major film premieres and fine discoveries playing every year — now with even more to see and experience.
“There’s always challenges,” Rosenthal said about putting on a festival of the size and complexity of Tribeca. “We were the first festival that came out of Covid. It was great. There’s always challenges, always challenges.”
This year Tribeca is embellished with something else – a complementary festival called De Niro Con, which celebrates the life and career of the Tribeca cofounder that coincides with his 80th birthday. There will be special screenings, conversations and live events.
“I am excited for De Niro Con.

English actor Glynis Johns, who played the daffy suffragette mother Mrs. Banks in the classic film “Mary Poppins,” died Thursday at an assisted living home in Los Angeles, her manager Mitch Clem confirmed to Variety. She was 100.
“Glynis powered her way through life with intelligence, wit, and a love for performance, affecting millions of lives,” Clem said in a statement. “She entered my life early in my career and set a very high bar on how to navigate this industry with grace, class, and truth. Your own truth. Her light shined very brightly for 100 years. She had a wit that could stop you in your tracks powered by a heart that loved deeply and purely. Today is a somber day for Hollywood. Not only do we mourn the passing of our dear Glynis, but we mourn the end of the golden age of Hollywood.”

Ho Ho Ho motherf*ckers! Yup, it’s that time of year again…the giving season. As families everywhere come together to celebrate the holidays, bundle up by the fire, and indulge in a parade of sappy Christmas movies, the real adults in the room are going to need something with a bit more kick. Think about it, the all-time best Christmas movies – It’s a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, A Christmas Story, Home Alone, you name it – all revolve around sentimental family-friendly stories for children and adults to enjoy equally. But f*ck all that, Jack, this year we’re all about honoring a bona fide Christmas classic expressly aimed at adult audiences. While Die Hard and Violent Night are worthy action-packed contenders, it’s time to dish out the edible cookies and spiked eggnog for Bad Santa – easily the most politically incorrect and controversially transgressive Christmas comedy on record.

Among its slate of MipTV presentations, The Wit hosted its first-ever Fresh TV Young Adult Content. After the last series of in-person sessions hosted by The Wit at MipCom, the importance and influence of YA drama was unmistakable, inspiring this year’s MipTV dedicated session hosted by The Wit founder-ceo Virginia Mouseler.
“It’s our mission at The Wit to give our subscribers information and inspiration for creation and acquisition,” she said, explaining the new session’s inspiration.
“In the world of YA drama, ‘Euphoria’ is the reference for the genre,” she started, before noting that fans of the HBO super-series were left without a new season in 2020, leaving many to turn to Warner Bros’ “Generation,” similarly on HBO Max. Describe by Mouseler as a post-“Euphoria” series, “Generation” is far less tragic and far more tongue in cheek. It features a group of high-school students exploring and learning about their sexuality,...

The 18th Tribeca Film Festival begins tonight at Harlem’s storied Apollo Theater, eight miles uptown from the fest’s post-9/11 birthplace.
Opening-night title The Apollo, an HBO documentary about the fabled mainstay of 125th Street, helped dictate the choice of venue, which is hosting its first Tribeca event. But there is also something apt about the festival simultaneously celebrating a proscenium theater built in 1913 at the same time it showcases virtual reality, embraces television and leans into inclusiveness across the board. A Critics Week sidebar is a new, Cannes-like addition to the offerings, but at the same time the hand-wringing on the Croisette over what to do with titles from Netflix seems all but irrelevant at this restlessly polyglot affair.
“No question we’re ambitious, but look at how the industry is changing,” co-founder Jane Rosenthal told Deadline. “Netflix just had a black-and-white, Spanish-language film up for multiple Oscars.

Go back to bed, America. Late cult comic Bill Hicks' true roots are exposed as Richard Linklater bares his own.
"Watching television is like taking black spray paint to your third eye," early alternative comedian Bill Hicks observed, probably on a televised special. Movies are a different story, and filmmaker Richard Linklater, who took over ten years to make one coming-of-age flick, is a different kind of director. The Oscar-winnng director of Boyhood will develop, write and direct a movie about Hicks for Focus Features, according to Collider.
This is a passion project for Linklater. Both he and Hicks grew up in Houston, Linklater’s older brother went to the same school as Hicks, and the director has said he regretted he and the comedian never got to work together. According to reports, Hicks was a fan of Linklater’s Dazed And Confused, whichcame out a...

Since the people at Fox are bored waiting on the deal with Disney to finish, they have decided to look at giving us a Prequel to one of the most beloved basball films of all time.
It never fails. Just when you think Hollywood has already spit out the dumbbest possible ideas, they go ahead and come up with something even worse. This time, since they have nothing better to do, Fox has decided what the world needs is a prequel to The Sandlot. How is that even possible?!
The Sandlot is a classic film about 9 kids that came together one summer to defeat the beast, to save a baseball signed by The Sultan of Swat himself. The movie itself is a prequel, to children's summers all over America! What is there we need to know about these kids before that fateful summer. Until this point in their lives all there was,...
