Written and directed by A.V. Rockwell, “A Thousand and One” tells the story of a young Black woman named Inez (Teyana Taylor), and her son Terry (Aaron Detola), as they seek to recreate their image and build their own definition of home and family during New York City’s mid-90s restructuring era.
What do two crooks know about building a family? That’s the question Lucky (William Catlett) poses in one of the scenes from the film. They are victims of their circumstances and natives of a city that has long mistreated people who look like them. Sharing similar backgrounds, the two come together after Inez takes Terry from the foster care system to give him the life she never had, and though Lucky initially never wanted to be Terry’s father, he eventually warms up to the idea and steps in to fill the role.

There are eight million stories in the naked city — the saga of Inez de la Paz is just one of them.
A Thousand and One wants you to pay attention to this particular tale, however, and to give her experience its due. This woman could be anybody. But as A.V. "You're a blessing. For your mom especially." Focus Features has revealed a trailer for an indie drama titled A Thousand and One, an award-winning drama about a family in Harlem growing up and struggling to get by. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, playing to rave reviews and immense acclaim. I was at the world premiere at Sundance and it definitely deserves all the buzz (it's included in my Best of the Fest recap). One of the many things that sets “A Thousand and One” apart from other, similarly tough-minded stories of urban struggle, poverty and marginalization can be felt practically from the start, as director A.V. Rockwell introduces Inez (R’n’B performer and choreographer Teyana Taylor) walking the pavement along a painted brick wall in early-’90s Harlem. The way composer Gary Gunn’s symphonic music swells and swirls on the soundtrack, and the way the camera gazes up at her from below as it tracks her purposeful stride, give this ordinary woman, whom we already know has only recently been released from Rikers Island, a heroic kind of dignity.
In her Sundance-launched feature debut, Rockwell uses the full range of cinematic expressivity to turn a small, often tragic story of raw deals and rash decisions into an admiring portrait of survivorship, determination and resourcefulness. Inez might be part of a stratum...

The story of Mildred and Richard Loving could easily have become a sledgehammer epic about social injustice. Writer-director Jeff Nichols instead sticks to the facts and recounts their ordeal with a quiet subjectivity that neither exaggerates nor sanctifies. The result is a marvelously affecting demonstration of how a civilized, progressive America rights a wrong. Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton are terrific as just plain folks oppressed by an obsolete law.

After five films, director Jeff Nichols and cinematographer Adam Stone have become adept at capturing a sparse, unconventional vision of life sparked by the bonds that keep people together. And in “Loving,” the historical drama about the landmark 1967 Supreme Court case that legalized the interracial marriage of Richard (Joel Edgerton) and Mildred Loving (Ruth Negga) in Virginia, the filmmaking duo take their vision to another level.
Shot anamorphically on 35mm film, which is their preferred format, Nichols and Stone emphasize love as an inalienable right for this simple, rural couple that changed the history of race relations in this country.
Visually, the director and cinematographer achieve a pastoral beauty in many of the actual locations in and around Richmond, Virginia. This helps authenticate the period and the love story, which eschews conventional conflict and even a climax.

Granted: they have an argument, albeit a weak one, that the fetus is a separate being and deserves protection even though it is inside the mother’s womb. Based on true events, Loving stars Ruth Negga (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Preacher) and Joel Edgerton (The Gift) as a real life interracial couple trying to live their lives in the 1960s. Now Focus Features has teamed up with Twitter for interracial and same-sex couple emojis which I can't believe wasn't already a thing in 2016. If you haven't already heard about this movie, here's a summary: From acclaimed writer/director Jeff Nichols, Loving celebrates the real-life courage and commitment of an interracial couple, Richard and Mildred Loving (portrayed by Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga), who married and then spent the next nine years fighting for the right to live as a family in their hometown. Their civil rights case, Loving v. Virginia, went all the way to the Supreme Court, which in 1967 reaffirmed the very foundation of the right to marry - and their love story has become an inspiration to couples ever since.

The news that you’ve seen Greenleaf before probably won’t come as much of a shock. The show is billed as a dynastic family drama whose deceit and lies bubble to the surface once a prodigal child returns with a baggage of viewpoints directly contradicting with what most in the scrupulous title clan take as gospel. Interchange Greenleaf’s sprawling megachurch in Memphis with a record business, oil company, etc, and you have the set-up of most serialized dramas in the past three decades.
That’s the unfortunate first impression that Own’s new scripted series gives off in its opening three hours: redundancy. The faith-based approach to a bible-thumping, all-black, Southern brood – who would smack me over the head for using the term “bible-thumping” – coalesces into welcomely dense conversations of what it actually means to be Christian, but the show never...
