I’ve been a fan of the Punisher since Archie comics did a lame crossover one-shot forever and a day ago. The brief and, let’s admit it, watered-down for the teeny-bopper set, introduction stuck with me. I was old enough to realize there was a whole lot about Frank Castle Archie Comics wasn’t going to tell me, but young enough not to resent his intrusion into the placid cheese of Riverdale.
As far as mash-ups go, the comic, of which I have two of the variant covers, it was a standard issue bad guy interrupting the big dance action setup where nobody got killed because this was the Punisher it was okay for your mom to spare a casual glance towards. I’m not saying I’m proud of it, but I’m being honest about my start.
Comics-wise, the Punisher is probably one of the less politically...

Fantastic news for fans of “The Walking Dead” alum Jon Bernthal, who has joined the second season of Netflix’s “Daredevil” cast as The Punisher, Marvel announced Tuesday. Not as discerning as Daredevil, The Punisher is a vigilante / antihero who will “go there” and resort to any means necessary to clean up Hell’s Kitchen. Bernthal is still mourned by fans of AMC’s The Walking Dead – his sexy, complex role as Shane Walsh was a great balance to the stoic and less juicy Rick Grimes. He also appeared in Brad Pitt’s “Fury” last year, as well as “The Wolf of Wall […]...

Those weren't exactly subtle hints so you've probably figured out that both Jon Bernthal and Joel Edgerton are the next names being lined up to star as Rick Flag in Suicide Squad, according to Cinemablend. Bernthal came to our attention as the doomed Shane Walsh on AMC's The Walking Dead, and also worked with director David Ayer in his WWII drama, Fury. Meanwhile Egerton has starred in a number of great flicks over the years, most recently playing Christian Bale's nemesis in Exodus: Gods And Kings. The site also reckon they've confirmed the Gary Sinise rumor, and the actor has indeed signed on to appear in the film -- but not as General Eiling! They don't say which character he will play, but it won't be Deathstroke either, as they hear former True Blood wolfman Joe Manganiello is "in contention" for that role. So quite a bit of news here,...

Most people know Jon Bernthal from the hit AMC series "The Walking Dead," where he played Shane Walsh, a man who takes up with his best friend's wife following the zombie apocalypse. (Spoiler alert: his character was killed off in 2012.) In this week's vicious war movie "Fury" (read our review), Bernthal basically plays a member of the walking dead. He's Grady "Coon Ass" Travis, a member of a tank unit in the waning days of the European theater, under the command of Brad Pitt. Bernthal is wild, animalistic, and covered in mud throughout virtually the entire movie, so the similarities between himself and the TV show's titular zombie menace isn't just superficial. Throughout most of "Fury" he both looks and acts like he just crawled out of his own grave. And to hear him talk about making the movie, it sounds like Bernthal literally went through hell. We sat down...

This Sunday night is of course the Season 4 finale of The Walking Dead, which we can be sure will be a shocking and heartbreaking one, as all of the show’s finales tend to be. It’s pretty much a guarantee that at least one major character will not make it to Season 5, and considering how invested we’ve all become with pretty much everyone throughout the course of this character-heavy season, I think it’s pretty safe to say that devastating will be a word we’ll be using to describe the episode, come Monday morning.
As fans of The Walking Dead, devastation and heartbreak are things we’re unfortunately all too familiar with. As we wait to find out what the hell is really going on with Terminus, we thought it fitting that today we pay tribute to some of those who have fallen throughout the seasons, by...

Stallone and De Niro come face to face (again) in Grudge Match. Here's our review...
When Rocky Balboa hit cinema screens back in 2006, there was an incredible amount of cynicism attached to Sylvester Stallone’s return to the cinematic franchise that catapulted his career to super stardom. For many there was easy mileage in making jokes about Stallone’s advancing age, or in accusing him of cashing in on an old brand in a desperate attempt to have one final box office hit, yet his love of the character and the sheer determination to write and direct a glorious last hurrah for the beloved Balboa (well, apart from the upcoming TV series Creed) worked and worked well.
Frighteningly, it’s now been eight years since Sly’s last big screen boxing opus, but he’s proved that punching the living daylights out of things...

With filming just wrapped on the forthcoming World War II action drama Fury, in which he’ll star alongside Brad Pitt under the helm of the rather fantastic David Ayer, he’s currently in multiplexes in not one, but two big movies – Grudge Match with Stallone and De Niro (due out in the UK on the 24th January) and the superb The Wolf of Wall Street, which most of us here at Den of Geek just can’t recommend enough.

While the movies have brought us many great sports films over the decades, boxing seems to hold a special place in film history, and has brought us some of the true classics of cinema history. And even as boxing has become less popular among the general American public, Hollywood’s love affair with pugilism has kept going strong. The twenty-first century has already brought us such acclaimed boxing films as Ali (2001), Million Dollar Baby (2004), Cinderella Man (2005), Rocky Balboa (2006), and The Fighter (2010). Now, director Peter Segal has entered this particular sub-genre with Grudge Match, a boxing comedy starring Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone. While it certainly won’t be counted among the great boxing films or the great sports comedies, it’s a fun little movie that’s worth a look if you’re interested.

Mob City premieres Dec. 4 at 10/9Ct on TNT. When Jon Bernthal teamed up with Oscar-nominated writer/producer/director Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) on the set of Darabont’s apocalyptic AMC drama The Walking Dead, he knew he’d forged a personal and professional partnership that would last long after viewers ultimately discover who comes out on top, the living or the undead. So when the actor, who played loose-cannon former cop Shane Walsh, learned his character’s time was up around the same time Darabont was confoundingly excused from the show he’d helped make a pop-culture phenomenon, there was already … Continue reading →
