Note: Spoilers for “Theater Camp” are included.
Searchlight Pictures’ “Theater Camp” is a delightfully fun look at the wacky world of youth theater camps that draws inspiration from some of the best documentary features. “‘Metallica Some Kind of Monster’ or ‘War Room’ [was] a huge influence on us,” codirector Nick Lieberman told TheWrap. “Frederick Wiseman’s ‘Salesman,’ those movies all have moments that are some of my favorite funniest moments in movies. The challenge was how can you create that feeling, or create that spirit or write to that spirit?”
Ben Platt and Noah Galvin play two of the teachers working with the camp’s budding actors. They also worked on the film’s original songs (with Galvin also acting as cowriter on the script). “This movie is an amalgam of all of us,” Galvin said. “The characters we play are little scrapbooks of all of the teachers and theater people...

It’s good to know that Ben Platt and Molly Gordon’s failed childhood romance didn’t keep them from remaining life-long friends. The actors star in “Theater Camp,” a mockumentary about a performing arts summer camp co-directed by Gordon and Nick Lieberman. Said romance bloomed when Platt and Gordon were just 7 years old.
“I gave her this charm bracelet as I-guess-we’re-going-to-date-now,” Platt remembers during an appearance on this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast. “She freaked out and told her mom, ‘I’m not ready,’ so I gave it to a different girl. Instead, I gave Molly a picture frame with a picture of me and Molly in it because I was like, ‘Here’s a friendship thing.’ Then she was devastated.”
Joining Platt on the podcast was his “Theater Camp” co-star and husband-to-be Noah Galvin. “Theater Camp,” based on a 2020 short of the same name, was written...

There is a moment toward the end of "Theater Camp" where one of the campers says that being at camp has helped him accept that he's straight. His two gay dads tell him they always knew and still support him. Of course this is a joke, a parody of the more common moment where a kid has to come out to his parents as gay. But the essence of "Theater Camp" - and why it's probably my favorite queer film of the year - is in that moment. "Theater Camp" effortlessly and immediately creates a queer world, where no one - no matter their age - has to explain or defend themselves. It's a vision of a queer future.

When the initial idea that would become co-directors Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman’s feature directorial debut was first hatched, it was relatively small-scale. Literally: It was a short film. But after Gordon and Lieberman, alongside their creative partners Ben Platt and Noah Galvin, released the short “Theater Camp” online in 2020 to quick acclaim, the group knew they needed to make it bigger. Like, feature-sized bigger.
Three years later, the foursome premiered the feature version of “Theater Camp” at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, where it was met with strong reviews and a quick buy from Searchlight Pictures, which picked it up in “the high seven figures range,” with a theatrical release guaranteed.
Both the short and the feature hinge on a concept near and dear to all of their hearts. Cleverly conceived as a mockumentary, “Theater Camp” picks up as our unnamed (and unseen) filmmakers are just a day into production.

Ben Platt and Noah Galvin made their relationship public back in 2020, but the pair had been friends for quite some time before then - all thanks to "Dear Evan Hansen." They seemingly connected for the first time after Galvin took over Platt's titular role in the Broadway musical in November 2017. In the years following, the two were spotted out and about a handful of times - including at a "Wicked" performance and Bette Midler's annual Hulaween party in 2019 - before they made their romance official.
On May 11, 2020, during an appearance on the "Little Known Facts With Ilana Levine" podcast, Galvin announced that he and Platt were, indeed, in a relationship. "Ben and I are dating," Galvin said at the time. "I asked him this morning, I was like, are we allowed to talk about this? And he's like, 'Don't go into our nitty gritty, but yeah, people can know.

Not since Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s “Good Will Hunting” has a group of actors (and actual friends) so felicitously taken a movie into their own hands.
Two childhood pals, Tony winner Ben Platt (“Dear Evan Hansen”) and “The Bear” star Molly Gordon, alongside Gordon’s “Booksmart” co-star Noah Galvin, plus Nick Lieberman, their go-to video director, spent the early days of the pandemic writing “Theater Camp,” itself a feature version of their 2020 18-minute mockumentary of the same name.
Platt, Gordon, and Galvin also starred in both the short (financed by Platt) and the feature film, while Lieberman directed the short and co-directed the feature with Gordon. The four are also all credited producers. Talk about do-it-yourself.
Platt and Lieberman have collaborated on improv and sketch comedy videos since they were just teenagers. “He is like a vital voice in the group as a director and a writer,” Platt told IndieWire.

Noah Galvin and Ben Platt are one of the cutest (and most talented) couples around. The actors, who both portrayed the titular character in Broadway's "Dear Evan Hansen," were friends for years before their relationship turned romantic. While making an appearance on "The Kelly Clarkson Show" in June 2021, Platt revealed that he and Galvin actually "skated around" the idea of dating for a while before they finally decided to give it a shot. "I didn't see the light for a long time and then I [realized], you know, that he was the guy," Platt said.
After officially getting together at the beginning of 2020, the stars moved in with Platt's parents during the pandemic. "It ended up being a beautiful time," Platt said. Now, years later, Galvin and Platt are engaged. During an April 2023 appearance on "The View," Platt said the couple aren't in a rush to get married because they want...

Ben Platt and his fiancé, Noah Galvin, were red carpet perfection at the 2023 Tony Awards on June 11, showing a little Pda as they posed together outside NYC's United Theater. Both wore black suits with double-breasted jackets and baggy pants, which they paired with chunky black dress shoes for the big occasion.
Platt was nominated for lead actor in a musical for his role in the "Parade" revival. He previously won in that category in 2017 for his turn as the title character in "Dear Evan Hansen." Notably, Galvin has also played Evan Hansen on Broadway.
The couple first confirmed their engagement on Nov. 25, 2022 after first publicly announcing their romance back in May 2020. Their first engagement was just the beginning though. On May 29, 2023, Platt revealed Galvin proposed back to him, captioning a photo of his new ring, "He proposed back," on his Instagram Story. Ben Platt and his fiancé Noah Galvin are celebrating a joyous occasion in their relationship — another engagement!
This time around, Galvin took matters into his own hands and popped the question to the “Pitch Perfect” actor after Platt initially proposed to Galvin in November 2022.
The Broadway star, 29, shared the exciting news on his Instagram Story Monday, showing off a sapphire ring, similar to the one he proposed to Galvin with.
“He proposed back,” Platt captioned the snapshot, followed by a pic of their dog holding a red rose in his mouth while surrounded by blue rose petals on the ground.
“I said yes,” Platt wrote alongside the photo of their pet.
Galvin, also 29, reposted the pic on his own Story, adding that, “George Did The Asking.”

With festival success at Sundance and SXSW under its belt, new comedy Theater Camp is headed our way later this year. Check out the first trailer…
Ben Platt and Molly Gordon star in the new comedy as Amos and Rebecca-Diane, lifelong best friends and drama instructors at a rundown camp in upstate New York. When the camp's indomitable founder Joan (Amy Sedaris) falls into a coma, her clueless tech-bro spawn Troy (Jimmy Tatro) arrives to run the property, Amos, Rebecca-Diane and production manager Glenn (Noah Galvin) band together with the staff and students, staging a masterpiece to keep their beloved summer camp afloat.
Gordon and Nick Lieberman made their directorial debut with the movie, co-writing with Platt and Galvin and adapting the short they made in 2020. Theater Camp will make its way to UK cinemas on 25 August.

Comedy is exceedingly difficult to pull off theatrically in the streaming age, but Searchlight Pictures is giving it the ol' college try this summer with the original comedy "Theater Camp." The good news? It looks absolutely hilarious and has been met with rave reviews coming out of film festivals such as Sundance (read our review here). Now, a trailer has arrived online, which will help give the moviegoing masses an idea of what to expect. If this is anything to go on, expect something endearing and funny.
The film hails from Nick Lieberman and Molly Gordon, who you may recognize from movies like "Booksmart" and "Good Boys." They are directing here, with Gordon also starring alongside Ben Platt ("Dear Evan Hansen"). While they may not be overly experienced feature directors, it looks like they didn't miss a beat in bringing this story to life. But enough talk, let's roll the footage.
