Attended Indiana University where he studied creative writing and stage work in 1941 until he served in World War II. He graduated Indiana University in 1947. He had taken drama classes at the University of the Redlands in California; the Hollings School of Theatre in San Francisco, and Seattle Repertory in Seattle,. He went to New York City. He was accepted into Erwin Friedrich Max Piscator's famed Drama Workshop with Tony Curtis, Bea Arthur, Harry Belafonte, Harry Guardino and twenty others.
