Paradise, directed by Sri Lankan filmmaker Prasanna Vithanage, is playing in the Icons: South Asia section of Mumbai Film Festival, fresh from its world premiere at Busan International Film Festival where it won the Jiseok Award.
The film follows an Indian couple on holiday in Sri Lanka, where they are touring the Ramayana Trail, a set of locations connected to the Indian mythological epic, just as the country’s economic crisis is starting to kick off. Despite the beauty and signs of impending chaos around them, the husband seems more preoccupied with the Netflix commission he’s just won, prioritizing his professional ambitions, while the wife questions the tour guide’s interpretation of the Ramayana.
When the couple are held at knifepoint and have their phones and laptops stolen, they ask for help from a stoic local police officer who quickly produces three suspects. Their relationship is then severely tested...

The 2002 Gujarat riots, also known as the 2002 Gujarat violence, was a three-day period of inter-communal violence in the western Indian state of Gujarat. The burning of a train in Godhra on 27 February 2002, which caused the deaths of 58 Hindu pilgrims and karsevaks returning from Ayodhya, is cited as having instigated the violence. Following the initial riot incidents, there were further outbreaks in Ahmedabad for three months; statewide, there were further outbreaks of violence against the minority Muslim population of Gujarat for the next year.
According to official figures, the riots ended with 1,044 dead, 223 missing, and 2,500 injured. Of the dead, 790 were Muslim and 254 Hindu. Dakxinkumar Bajrange sets his story in the same area, 10 years after the events, with the fire of terrorism still burning intensely, as the serial bomb blasts instigated by Yasin Darji and the tension in the neighborhoods where Muslims and Hindus co-exist eloquently highlight.

ReviewDebutant directors Manoj Leonel Jahson and Shyam Sunder accomplish a daring feat in Tamil cinema weaving together myth, archetypes, maths and psychology.Bharathy SingaravelCourtesy/NeelamProductionsaAndYaazhiFilmsImagine you’re invited to sit in a dark room and watch someone else’s nightmare play out on a screen. In real time. The chaotic flow of dream-events that are confusing enough when the dreams are our own flit by with little explanation. The music and sound effects are precisely keyed to keep you in a state of agitation. The second you think you’ve grasped a hint of meaning, that thread dissolves into something else. Kuthiraivaal is such an experience. This isn’t to say don’t watch the film. Quite the opposite. Debutant directors Manoj Leonel Jahson and Shyam Sunder accomplish a daring feat: a confounding dreamscape that weaves in myth, archetypes, maths and psychology. Movie ReviewOnce you lose that dying need to reason, you might as well sit back and enjoy the beauty of the frames, and just watch the characters at work.CrisIt sounded like a cosy fantasy tale you could sit and relax with. A man waking up with a horse tail on his back after a strange dream in the night – sounds about right. But you would have been really, really mistaken in assuming it was going to be a relaxing experience watching Kuthiraivaal, directed by newcomers Manoj Leonel Jason and Shyam Sunder, which premiered on Friday at the International Film Festival of Kerala (Iffk). Turns out, it is a huge exercise for the brain to even keep track, forget trying to make sense of all that’s presented to you. It can however be a really interesting experience, and what is generally perceived as a psychedelic one. Saravanan (Kalaiyarasan), aged...

Mumbai, Nov 5 (Ians) Actor Pankaj Tripathi is happy that his 2017 release, Newton, was screened for polling officers in Bihar ahead of election duty. He says the Rajkummar Rao-starrer is the kind of film that resonates till date, especially with those who are on election duty.
Amit V. Masurkar's Newton was India's official entry at the Oscars 2018. The film, which also featured Anjali Patil and Raghubir Yadav, was about a government officer, played by Rao, who is assigned polling duty in a politically volatile area where Naxalite attacks are rampant. Tripathi played an assistant commandant of Central Reserve Police Force (Crpf), who along with his unit, has the task of providing security at the polling booth.
Recently, Tripathi heard from a local zonal officer in Chapra that the film has remained a source of inspiration for many election duty officers and polling agents in the run-up to the ongoing Bihar elections.

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra has paid homage to 1959’s Asha Bhosle Holi chartbuster ‘Are Ja Re Hat Natkhat for Mere Pyare Prime Minister. Not only that he shoots it in a single take!
Now that’s how one would rather pay homage to a yesteryear chartbuster number.
In the era of recreated songs that mushroom practically every week, filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra has done something different for his latest offering Mere Pyare Prime Minister. For a situation in the film that involved Holi celebrations, he has recreated Asha Bhosle sung ‘Are Ja Re Hat Natkhat’. However, instead of just picking the germ of the original and then turning it around totally, he has actually ensured that a large part of the song was retained with just a few new added elements.

CinemaThis year saw impressive debut films, experimental cinema that broke the rules, and quite a few films with women in the lead.Sowmya RajendranThe Tamil film industry in 2018 had quite a few films that made us sit up and take notice. There were impressive debut films, experimental cinema that broke the rules set by the mainstream, films that subverted the usual stereotypes, and ones that took on politicians in the state and the Centre. And then, of course, there were films that tried out new things but didn't quite pull it off. It has also been a year when the audience embraced good storylines and performances, proving yet again that the mere presence of a star cannot rescue a lazy film at the box-office. Tnm brings you the best and most interesting films of 2018 in no particular order. Kaala: Pa Ranjith's second film with Rajinikanth saw a more assured director...

An idealistic teacher starting in a new school and changing the conventional way of teaching to completely shatter the expectations of parents and teachers about some students in one way or the other has been a popular subject for films. From the 1989 Hollywood film “Dead Poets Society” to the 2018 Bollywood film “Hichki” there are a lot of such instances. A sub-section of this type of films are the films in which the school will be in a remote village where education isn’t given a lot of importance and this new teacher, with their great wisdom and kindness, change the lives of students. “Bardo” is the latest entry into these type of films from the Marathi language.
“Bardo” screened at Mumbai Film Festival
“Bardo” tries to be different from these films by making the new teacher more naive and still trying to cope with her failures while trying to live up to everyone’s expectations.

KollywoodIt is Kumar's second directorial after 'Maayavan', a science fiction thriller released last year.Digital NativeProducer CV Kumar is ready with his second directorial project in Tamil: Gangs of Madras. The annoucement was made on Tuesday, without a lot of buzz. The cast and crew have not been announced yet. It is heard that Kumar might make the movie with newcomers. Kumar, who is known for producing critically acclaimed films such as Pizza and Soodhu Kaavum, made his directorial debut last year with the science fiction thriller Maayavan, featuring Sundeep Kishan and Jackie Shroff in key roles. The film’s premise revolved around the concept of immortality and how human beings using advanced technology can transfer their soul to another body and never leave this world. Despite pleasing the critics with its out-of-the-box concept, the film was a box-office dud. Nevertheless, it had earned Kumar praise from all sections of the audiences for his overall effort. On taking the directorial plunge, Kumar had said in an interview to Ians: “As a producer, I was always involved in discussing story ideas with my directors. They all liked the story idea of Mayavan. Filmmaker Nalan (Kumarasamy) suggested that I direct. Honestly, I was never keen on direction, but things just fell in place.” He also went on to say that direction was an eye-opener. "It made me realise the challenges of a director. As a producer, I remember instructing my directors to finish everything under budget. It was when I was in their shoes that I realised how challenging it is to direct and take the responsibility of everything.” (Content provided by Digital Native) Also read: Meet Anjali Patil: The fiery Puyal from ‘Kaala’ who has taken everyone by storm...

MollywoodThe film is presented by Nazriya, who is also making her comeback as an actor, through Anjali Menon's 'Koode'.Tnm Staff"The Outsider!" Amal Neerad posted on his Facebook on Wednesday noon, announcing his new movie, Varathan, in Malayalam - The Outsider in English. The film has Fahadh Faasil in the lead. Amal, who is directing the film, has put out its first look poster, a visual of Fahadh wearing goggles, and four or five little figures in the background holding their lit torches. Aishwarya Lekshmi, coming straight out of her much-appreciated performance in Mayaanadhi, plays the female lead in the film. Best of all, the poster says, Nazriya Nazim presents Varathan. Nazriya too has been in the news for coming back to act in the Anjali Menon film Koode after a gap of four years, following her marriage to Fahadh. Amal will be producing the film with Nazriya. It'd be a joy to the fans that both Fahadh and Nazriya movies are coming out one after the other. Expected to be a thriller, the Fahadh film will release this Onam. He was last seen in Venu's Carbon, in which he played a man out to make some quick money and going through some out of the world experiences in a trip through the woods. Known for his ease in handling versatile characters, Fahadh is trusted with all sorts of roles, sometimes with negative shades. In Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum, a critically acclaimed film that came out last year, Fahadh had played a low level thief, with a strangely strong disposition. Little Swayamp, who is slowly making a name for himself after his exceptional work for Parava, is doing the cinematography. Sushin Syam is composing the music. Amal's previously announced Mammootty movie Bilal is also expected to release this year, which he is again directing and producing. It's more than 10 years since he last worked with Mammootty in Big B, Amal's first directorial, which had at the time created waves for its peculiar style of cinematography. Interview'The messages from women have been very fulfilling': Anjali Patil to Tnm on 'Kaala'.Sowmya RajendranFacebook/Anjali PatilShe is an award-winning actor with several critically acclaimed films to her name. But for the Tamil audience, she is Puyal, the fiery young woman from Kaala, who has taken everyone by storm with her performance. Anjali Patil always thought her role in the film was a small one. But after the Pa Ranjith directorial released on June 7, Anjali's character has been among the most discussed aspects in the film. The one scene that has struck people powerfully is when Puyal is stripped by policemen during a protest. Instead of picking up her clothes, she picks up a stick lying next to it and continues to attack the cops. Speaking to Tnm, Anjali recalls how they shot that scene. "We were shooting in the middle of the night and I was probably the only woman on the sets. There was an assistant and we were surrounded by a mob of 500-600. But you know, I come from very strong training. I've spent 7 years in drama school. So the things we're trained to do make us practical and professional. While doing the scene, I had only one job - to make it look very normal. Because if it is not normal and casual when I shoot, my co-actors, the cops would feel uncomfortable and we would not get good shots. So it boils down to getting the shots right and getting good performances on camera." Anjali had the option of using a body double for the scene - a man - but she decided to do the scene herself. "We had a body double who was wearing exactly my clothes. But I didn't use him. I didn't like the idea of someone else doing it for me. I had to show them how to do it - especially the police guys - if you hold me in the air like this and if you pull my pants like this, it's going to be easy," she says. 'An emotionally exhausting job' Looking at Anjali's body of work, it's not surprising that Pa Ranjith cast her for Puyal's role. In films like With You, Without You (for which she won the Silver Peacock for Best Actor (Female) at the Iffi), Na Bangaaru Talli, and The Silence, Anjali has played characters who've stood up to gender violence - though each of those characters has been unique. Does she find it emotionally draining to play such roles? "Of course, it drains me a lot. When I did With You, Without You and Na Bangaaru Talli, I was almost in depression for a really long time; they take so much out of you as an actor. It's something you don't even realise. When I came out of With You, Without You, I didn't realise that the film would affect me so much for so many years. After Na Bangaaru Talli, I decided that I wouldn't do heavy duty films like this anymore because it was affecting me mentally and physically as well," Anjali says. In Na Bangaaru Talli, the actor's award-winning Telugu film, Anjali plays the daughter of a man who trafficks women and girls into sex work. In With You, Without You, a Sri Lankan film, Anjali plays a Tamil woman from a war-torn region who ends up marrying an ex-solider. "When I was doing Na Bangaaru Talli, I lost hair. Physically, my hair was pulled out of my scalp. When I did With You, Without You, I thought I probably would never fall in love or be a normal girl because I was, in a way, affected by the character a lot," she shares. Do these roles allow her a catharsis at some level? Anjali thinks for a moment and says, " I don't know about catharsis - most people think of actors who get these huge pay cheques and they get all these comforts and luxuries. I have a very different view of it, especially in the last couple of years. It's a very difficult job, it's an emotionally exhausting job. Na Bangaaru Talli we were shooting for so many nights. We were shooting for almost a month at nights. So sleeping in the day and waking up at 2 or 3 in the afternoon and then staying awake for the entire night is a very, very demanding job." On Kaala Coming back to Kaala, which draws several parallels to the epic Ramayana, I ask Anjali if her character was based on Shurpanaka. With a laugh, she says, "No, that wasn't in the brief I received. There are a lot of parallel things which you draw and it is very beautifully crafted, the way Ranjith details things. But Puyal wasn't supposed to be Shurpanaka...her nose didn't get cut! She was one of those contemporary characters, a girl of today who is equal in every way." With You, Without You had a limited release in Chennai. It was Pa Ranjith's assistants who watched the film and told the director about Anjali's performance in it. "The assistants called me and told me about this role. Very clearly, the best part about this entire film was that everyone always knew what sort of actor I am and what kind of work I do. There was tremendous respect when they called me. I remember them being very open to the fact that I might say no to the entire thing because I have been doing very strong lead roles and this might not be something I'm interested in. That honesty touched me," Anjali reveals. Anjali speaks fondly of her first meeting with Pa Ranjith. Calling him a "sensitive and sensible human being", Anjali says that they had a great conversation about colours, their ideas on politics, and so on. "That was important for me more than anything else. I felt this director is trying to do something huge. And I have been doing films, I have been standing up with people who've been associated with doing such substantial things - not paper horses. That's how I said yes, even though it was a tiny part in many ways. I always thought of Puyal like that. But when the film came out, the impact was huge," she says. Love for Puyal Anjali goes on to add that the love she has received for the character has been incredible and unexpected. For several women who watched the film, Puyal choosing to hit back instead of succumbing to patriarchal ideas of 'honour' that Tamil cinema has fed them for years, came as a relief. "I can totally understand that. I've been getting messages from boys also but the amount of messages I've been getting from girls, women, it's so fulfilling. It's amazing that girls want to see this, girls want to be this, more than their shame and so-called womanhood which is pushed on us," says Anjali. Anjali recognises that films have played a big role in selling such ideas to women. "Films have done some amount of damage in many ways. It's very fulfilling (to do a role like Puyal) because I'm not a damsel in distress. I'm a very independent woman and I've been independent since the time I was 16. I'm earning my money, earning my food. I choose to be with people I want to be. I choose my opinion, and I don't take anyone's opinion because I owe them anything. Economic independence gives me my emotional independence. I'm not dependent on any man to be happy. That's something every woman should know," she asserts. Off screen, within the film industry, Anjali believes there can be gender equality only when social attitudes change - a lot of women, too, are patriarchal, she points out. Small-scale Vs Mainstream In Newton, a 2017 release, Anjali played Malko, an adivasi woman. The film centred around subaltern politics, much like Kaala, but was very different in style. For one, Kaala was made on a massive budget and was sold as a 'Superstar' film, with Rajinikanth in the lead. For Anjali, however, the format of the film has never mattered. She sees these films as part of a continuum. "Not really. It has never made any difference to the work I have done. Of course, when Newton came out, it was written about all over. All the universities, professors, students, everyone was writing about it. It was incredible. It was really overwhelming, the way it was received. Then there was Kaala, a mainstream film. Thousands are watching it and then I get messages like 'Oh we've seen you in Newton' or 'Oh we've seen you in With You, Without You'. After Kaala, some people go back and see the work I've done." Calling Kaala a huge magnum opus, especially in comparison to the small-scale films she's known for, Anjali says that as an actor, she learnt to adapt "like a chameleon." She dubbed for herself in Kaala, as she has for most of her films across languages. In fact, right now, Anjali is learning Spanish for the fun of it. Kaala's women Kaala had two other pivotal women characters - Selvi (Easwari Rao) and Zarina (Huma Qureshi). The three women characters came together in quite a few scenes and although they did not always speak to each other, the dynamics between them was apparent in their glances and gestures. Anjali says that off screen, too, the three of them shared a camaraderie which made the shoot enjoyable. "I'm in love with Easwari akka. She's so beautiful, she's beauty personified. She's very loving. When I saw her for the first time, she came to me and said 'Ohh, you were in Bangaaru Talli!' - I guess because she's Telugu. It was very gracious of her. She was one of those people I'd see on the set and I'd just want to smile. She was quiet - I can see similarities between her and me. She'd work and then keep quiet, she'd sit by herself," says Anjali. Huma, on the other hand, was the opposite. "Huma is a prankster. She'd play cricket with the ball and the bat. She pulled me in as well. She knew I'm an introvert, so she'd try to draw me in. And when it came to speaking Tamil, I'd buck Huma up and tell her that she could do it if she had really long lines. We were the only two 'Hindi girls' in the sets, so we had that solidarity," says Anjali, with a smile. Looking back at her career thus far, Anjali has no regrets. "All the choices I've made so far made this painting of films and awards. It's made me who I am as an artiste," she says. She goes on to add, "There is no end to our desire for money and power. When I know this now for sure, I'd rather do cinema by which I'm remembered. Now even if I die in the next 4-5 years, it's fine. My films are there, they will always be there." After Kaala, Anjali has received more offers from the Tamil film industry. "Most of the people who approach me come with very strong idea of what I do as an artiste. They have known my work and that's why they come. So whatever role requires that kind of quotient or beauty - they'd never dare to come to me because they just know! It works in good favour for me because I don't have to convince them that just being fair doesn't mean beautiful," she says. KollywoodThe star is currently camping in Darjeeling where a 30-day long schedule is planned for his next with director Karthik Subbaraj.Digital NativeRajinikanth undoubtedly enjoys a huge fan following across the world. His latest release, Kaala, opened to packed houses on June 7, but its box office performance deteriorated and the film bombed at the box office. It may be mentioned here that director Pa Ranjith and Rajinikanth had teamed up for Kabali earlier and the film turned out to be a massive success at the box office. I will be in Darjeeling and shoot for 30 days here.” He further added, “The land of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Swami Vivekananda, Rabindranath Tagore and Subash Chandra Bose has mesmerised me. I am really happy to meet such lovely people, good and kind-hearted people. There are lots of beautiful locations here which are not explored. Kaala Kaarikalan (Tamil dubbed in Hindi)
Starring Rajinikanth, Nana Patekar, Huma Qureshi, Eswari Rao, Anjali Patil
Directed by Pa Ranjith
The splash of rhetorics and melodrama is to the uninitiated, quite overpowering. But then who in India is not aware of the bombastic antics of Rajnikanth the actor who defies gravity?
Seriously!
This is a man whom no force can defeat. Not poverty. Not pomposity.
Kaala twins it with majestic grandeur over poverty and pomposity. Aspiring to penetrate the squalor of slum life in Mumbai’s Dharavi, this film ends up being the poor man’s Slumdog Millionaire. Stuffed to the gills with epic ambitions, the plot bursts open at the seams under the weight of its self-importance.
Then there is the hamming. Enough of it to invest in a pork factory. So much of it from so many characters who most of the time hang around waiting to say...

Review Pa Ranjith is surefooted in 'Kaala' and the joy of watching Rajinikanth the performer, minus the swish-swash music, is inexplicable.Sowmya RajendranThere is a reason why epics are timeless. The human emotions they locate within the theatre of life are eternal. The struggles they speak of have always existed. But there is yet another reason why epics endure - they are open to interpretation. The stories within the story have the power to change its meaning, depending on which episodes the storyteller wants to emphasise. And from whose point of view. The storyteller here is Pa Ranjith, his voice more assured than ever before. The point of view is that of Ravana's, the symbol of evil for caste Hindus. The idea isn't new, of course. Epic re-tellings have made their way to Tamil cinema before (Mani Ratnam's disappointing Ravanan, for one). It's the defiant way in which Ranjith situates it which makes Kaala such an immediate, thrilling experience. Rajinikanth plays Kaala, a don under whose protection the people of Dharavi live. Their fight is for the land - and as the film tells us in the beginning, war began with private property and it continues to be fought for it. Ranjith's films have been discussed a great deal for their subtext. In Kaala, however, the subtext isn't hiding in the margins. It's out in the light, for everyone to see. It's in the clothes Kaala wears - either blue or black. It's in the name of the builder who wants to destroy the slum - Manu realty. It's in the name of the political party the spotlessly white clothed Hari dada (Nana Patekar) belongs to - Navbharath Nationalist Party. Even in the breed of the dogs the two men own. Kaala has a mongrel named Asami. Hari dada has an almost white Labrador we spot briefly in a shot. But the film isn't just a did-you-catch-that game. It's not just about hoardings of Swacch Bharat that leer down upon Dharavi or the Buddha at Kaala's home. It's not merely the glimpses of Ambedkar in the background. Kaala is surefooted in going beyond that. It weaves a compelling story around characters we cannot easily predict. There's Zarina (Huma Qureshi), Kaala's long lost love. But she's not just that. There is Lenin (who is suitably dressed in red for a good part), Kaala's son who disapproves of his father's ways and yet lives under the same roof as him. There's Charumathy/Puyal (Anjali Patil) who overturns Tamil cinema's favourite ideas of honour in one terrific scene that brought tears to my eyes. There is Selvi (Easwari Rao), who orders Kaala around (reminding us a little of Kumudhavalli) and shares a deliciously crafted romance with him. And of course, there's Valliappan (Samuthirakani) who is something of a semi-awake Kumbhakarna, always by Kaala's side. All of these people matter to the story, a story whose age suits the style of an epic. They are not there to make Kaala look good against the army of Ram. Nana Patekar is effortless in his portrayal of Hari dada. His dubbing in the trailer had some of us worried but in the film, the mix of Hindi-Tamil-Marathi that he slips into crawls under our skin in the way it is meant to. His face-offs with Rajini work so well because both stars are at the peak of their game. Is it a Rajinikanth film? Well, there's that stunningly shot superman rain fight which will have fans go crazy. There's that scene at the police station where Rajini mocks a minister with a punchline (hint: if you've followed the Thoothukudi protests, the irony hits you in the face). Or the one where he actually seems to transform into a Ravana, waging battle through the flames. However, the joy of watching Rajinikanth the performer, minus the swish-swash music that has accompanied every on screen move of his, is inexplicable. He is still a demi-god but not one whose feet you need to touch. Ranjith is much more confident in handling Rajinikanth's star power and harnessing it than he was in Kabali - the 'young' Rajini in Kabali was to pander to the audience. In Kaala, young Rajini's story is an animation strip - to tell us what happened, not to get us clapping. Vengayin mavan is standing by himself, all right. Murali G's cinematography and Santosh Narayanan's background score up the ante in nearly every scene. But, all of it is melded into a framework that has Pa Ranjith's signature all over it. The ending, which explodes in a riot of colours, mimicking Holi (celebrated to mark the death of a demon...you know, the kind who is associated with Ravana) is brilliant. As black, blue, and red triumph and overturn our ideas of Good and Bad, Black and White, Pa Ranjith's achievement is unmistakable. He has made Rajinikanth meaningful, not a mere prop. PiracyA member of the Nadigar Sangam told Tnm that their team was trying to get the link blocked.Tnm StaffNotorious piracy site Tamilrockers on Thursday released the pirated version of Rajinikanth starrer Kaala at 5:28 am, reportedly even as the first shows of the film were screened across Tamil Nadu. Screenshots doing the round on social media suggest that the website even put out a HD version of the film. This comes despite the Tamil film industry's strong stance against piracy, which has seemingly not made a huge difference. Many took to Twitter to complain about the piracy and also tweeted to actor and Tamil Film Producers Council (Nadigar Sangam) President Vishal, demanding that swift action be taken. A member of the Nadigar Sangam told Tnm that their team was trying to get the link blocked. #Kaala released in #tamilrockers.......what are you going to do Mr. @VishalKOfficial ?? Soon after he got elected as head of Tamil Nadu Producers Council, Vishal issued a warning to the torrent site. Tamil Rockers has been a favorite online destination for lakhs to stream pirated South Indian movies. The admins of this site have remained anonymous. The torrent site has run into controversies many times by streaming movies live including big films like Baahubali, Premam and others. The website joined the police's wanted list after it sold the censor copy of Malayalam blockbuster Premam online. Kaala is directed by Pa Ranjith and is a gangster story loosely based on Mumbai-don Karikalan. The film has an impressive star cast with veterans like Nana Patekar and Samuthirakani included. Huma Qureshi and Anjali Patil have been roped in to play the female leads in the movie.

CinemaThe actor was speaking at the pre-release event for the film’s Telugu version in Hyderabad.Digital NativeTwitter/Lyca ProductionsRajinikanth’s upcoming film Kaala is all set for a massive release worldwide on June 7. While the expectation levels for this film is skyrocketing, at the pre-release event for the film’s Telugu version in Hyderabad, Rajinikanth said that he had watched the movie twice so far and can vouch that it has come out really well. According to a report in Toi, the actor said, “When it comes to Kaala, we don’t want to sing high praises about our own film and at the same time, we cannot reveal much about the story yet. I’ve seen the film twice and I liked it a lot. It’s not just for commercial reasons, but also has a good message to it.” He added, “The film is set in the backdrop of Dharavi slum, which is the largest slum in Asia. It deals with characters living inside this slum and tells the story of how it affects people’s lives. Usually in many films, only the hero’s character is of importance and the others may not be as significant. But in Kaala, there are at least six characters that will have a huge impact and will stay with you even after the movie.” Speaking at the same event, the film’s producer and actor Dhanush said that there is one and only one Rajinikanth, adding that it was an honour to work with an actor like him. Rajinikanth also had words of praises for the film’s heroines, Huma Qureshi and Easwari Rao. He lauded both of them for being patient through the filmmaking process and performing well in Kaala. Directed by Pa Ranjith, the film also stars Nana Patekar, Samuthirakani, Aruldoss, Anjali Patil, Sukanya, Aravind Akash and Sayaji Shinde. Santosh Narayanan has composed the music for this action entertainer with G Murali handling the camera and A Sreekar Prasad editing. Interestingly, director Pa Ranjith, superstar Rajinikanth and music composer Santhosh Narayanan had worked together in Kabali and the film was a smash hit. With the trio teaming up for the second time, expectations are very high on Kaala. KollywoodAn enraged Kaala says, 'Our body is our only weapon' as he gathers people for a revolution.Tnm StaffThe second trailer for Rajinikanth’s Kaala was released on Monday evening. The first trailer came out on March 2 at midnight, after it was pushed by a day because of the death of Kanchi Jayendra Saraswati. The second trailer begins with Nana Patekar promising to change poverty into 'light'. This is followed by a building that's up in flames. We see more of Nana Patekar in the trailer, as he clearly marks out Kaala to be 'Raavan' and stating that whoever opposes him will be killed. The song 'Patthu thala Ravana' plays appropriately in the background. Huma Qureshi is seen asking Kaala if he really likes her a lot, to which he replies in the affirmative. This is, however, followed by Kaala cheekily saying 'I love you di' to an unimpressed Easwari Rao. We also catch a glimpse of Anjali Patil, who appears to be playing an activist. She's violently hit on the head, as is Samuthirakani in an earlier shot. The trailer ends with an enranged Kaala saying, "Our body is our only weapon. We will show this to the world. Call all our people!" The beginnings of a revolution, it appears. The first trailer introduced Kaala by his name and what it means. It set the stage for the confrontation that will take place between Kaala, who is a slumlord-turned-gangster in the film, and the antagonist who is played by Nana Patekar. Rajini’s ‘punch dialogue’ from the first trailer, “Kya re settingah?” has already become a rage. The trailer also had Easwari Rao, who plays Kaala’s wife in the film. As in Kabali, the wife character appears to be an assertive woman in Kaala too. The trailer was rich in political subtext and suggested that the film would have several lines that would resonate with the Ambedkarite politics that Pa Ranjith’s films are known for. The first single from Kaala ‘Semma Weightu’ was released on Labour Day. The trailers have seen Kaala extol the labour of ordinary, poor people and the date was clearly not chosen by coincidence. The rest of the album was subsequently released and has been met with a mixed response. Kaala will release in three languages – Tamil, Telugu and Hindi – on June 7. On Monday, Twitter launched a custom emoji for the hashtag ‘Kaala’ in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and English. Watch: Its Finally Time, #Thekingarrives in style! Kollywood The film is said to go on the floors in the next two months and will be wrapped before the end of the year. Digital NativePizza and Jigarthanda fame Karthik Subbaraj is all set to direct superstar Rajinikanth next. The yet-untitled project is slated to go on the floors from June or July. It was recently confirmed that Vijay Sethupathi will play a pivotal role in the film. In his latest interaction with radio channel Suryan FM, Sethupathi revealed that he signed the film without even listening to the script. “Thanks to the relationship I share with Karthik, I blindly signed the film.” On working alongside Rajinikanth, he said that he will learn from the 67-year-old star as a silent observer from the sets. Anirudh Ravichander has been roped in to compose music. On teaming up with Rajinikanth, Subbaraj said in a chat with Sun TV: “Even though I’ve made four films in my career so far, I grew fascinated towards cinema because of superstar Rajinikanth sir. To get to direct him is the best moment of my life,” Subbaraj said, adding that he plans to go on the floors in next two months and wrap up the project this year itself. Asked if the project will be as ambitious as Sun Pictures produced Enthiran in terms of scale, Subbaraj said his film will be quite different from Enthiran. “It’ll be a proper Rajini film,” he said. He also sees collaborating with the superstar will come with its set of expectations and high responsibility. “I see it as an enjoyable challenge.” Rajinikanth currently awaits the release of Kaala, which has been directed by Pa. Ranjith and it’s his second time collaboration with the superstar after Kabali. The film, confirmed to hit the screens on June 7, is believed to revolve around the lives of oppressed Tamils in Mumbai and their fight for equality. KollywoodThe news has not been announced officially yet.Digital NativeIt has already been confirmed that superstar Rajinikanth’s next film after Kaala will be with Karthik Subbaraj. In February this year, Sun Pictures officially announced that they’re proud to be associated with Rajinikanth’s next film with Karthik Subbaraj. In April, they confirmed that they have signed up Vijay Sethupathi for a crucial role in the film. According to the industry grapevine, it is learnt that Simran and Bobby Simhaa are the new entrants to the project. While an official confirmation is awaited, the news about them being signed is making waves. Both Vijay Sethupathi and Bobby Simhaa are very close to Subbaraj, and have worked with the Pizza filmmaker on multiple occasions. It was previously reported that Bollywood's Nawazuddin Siddiqui had been approached for playing the antagonist and Karthik is said to have met and pitched the story to Nawazuddin while promoting his film Mercury in Mumbai. But, the Gangs of Wasseypur star did not to give his nod. Later, it was announced that Vijay Sethupathy has been roped in to play the main antagonist in the film. Speaking about coming on board, in his latest interview to a Tamil daily, Vijay Sethupathi said he trusts Karthik Subbaraj blindly and hence signed the project without even reading the script. Rajinikanth currently awaits the release of Kaala, which has been directed by Pa. Ranjith and it’s his second time collaboration with the superstar after Kabali. The film, confirmed to hit the screens on June 7, is believed to revolve around the lives of oppressed Tamils in Mumbai and their fight for equality. Shankar’s 2.0, a sequel to Enthiran, was supposed to originally hit the screens on April 27. The film was scheduled for release on April 27 but the Tamil film industry strike forced its makers to postpone it. While fans have been waiting eagerly for the release date, it was confirmed that it would be a Ramzan release. The Hollywood flick Jurassic Park, which was released 25 years ago, was one of the biggest hits in India and therefore, there are huge expectations for Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom. Kaala, starring Rajinikanth in the title role, is directed by Pa Ranjith. The duo had collaborated earlier for Kabali which turned out to be a big hit and this is their second outing together. Brushing aside rumours that the character of Rajinikanth, who plays a slum lord turned gangster in the film, is based on the life of Haji Mastan, the director said in his recent interview to Tamil magazine Vikatan that the film is not inspired by any person’s life. The film talks about the livelihood of a society, Dharavi in particular. Ranjith said that the story is about the diversity of Dharavi slum. He said the inspiration for the titular character, played by Rajinikanth, was his grandfather. The film has a bevy of stars in the cast including Nana Patekar, Samuthirakani, Aruldoss, Eswari Rao, Huma Qureshi, Anjali Patil, Sukanya, Aravind Akash and Sayaji Shinde.
