For longtime fans of all things Barbie — which is currently in the middle of celebrating its 65th anniversary — Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film provided a different level of enjoyment. Filled with references to notable dolls and doll accessories from decades past, Margot Robbie’s Barbie and Ryan Gosling’s Ken wore bespoke ensembles dating back to brand’s 1959 inception.
Both Mattel’s head of design for dolls Kim Culmone and chief branding officer Lisa McKnight have reasons why Barbie has been special to them. Mattel said the line of products is aimed to reflect the world as kids see it, noting that the company had kids involved in the development of the products. It started with a paper doll. Then, there was the buxom German doll Bild Lilli, sold in gas stations mainly to adult men who did, well, something with them. Strange bedfellows, but Mattel executive Ruth Handler suspected that combining the two items could result in the creation of new kind of toy for girls, one that moved past traditional baby dolls and straight into an expanded (and aspirational) world of play. The cultural conversation surrounding Barbie, Mattel’s ubiquitous and influential best-selling doll, has always been a contentious one, and it became even thornier in 2016 when the company gave its flagship brand a risky makeover. “Tiny Shoulders: Rethinking Barbie” charts that project from inception to launch, along the way providing a history lesson on not only the doll’s evolution but also, more fascinatingly, on the way the product has reflected, and in turn shaped, the zeitgeist. Those on both sides of the debate should find Andrea Nevins’ documentary illuminating and thought-provoking when, following its Tribeca Film Festival premiere, it debuts exclusively on Hulu.
From the moment it landed on — and promptly flew off of — store shelves in 1959, Barbie has been a phenomenon and, because of that popularity, a lightning rod. Is she an empowering toy that encourages girls to dream big and, in doing so, helps them define their feminist identities?...
