Jim Carrey gets down to his roommates' level in Mr. Popper's Penguins.
Jim Carrey (I Love You Phillip Morris) stars in the film Mr. Popper’s Penguins, a family comedy about a driven businessman who is clueless when it comes to the important things in life until he inherits six adorable but mischievous penguins.
The wacky winter birds drive Popper crazy, even as they thrill his children and slowly turn him into a better person. Needless to say, good feelings and family values ultimately save the day.
Based on the 1938 Newbery Medal-winning novel by the husband and wife team of Richard and Florence Atwater, the movie is directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls) and co-stars Angela Lansbury (Harlow) as a kindly socialite and Carla Gugino (Elektra Luxx) as Popper’s ex-wife.

In this rather loose adaptation of the 1938 children's book by Richard and Florence Atwater, Mr. Popper's Penguins features Jim Carrey doing his best Jimmy Stewart; and really, he doesn't do that badly. In fact, he's rather charming in a very reeled-in capacity, which is pretty damn refreshing for an undeniably gifted comic who's fallen into the Mr. Try Too Hard pitfall of revamping his career of late. Still, this adaptation differs significantly from the book, but the only similarities that audiences will even care about are the big ones contained within the title; that is, Popper and his penguins are indeed front and center, and the protagonist learns the value of family while also amusing very young kiddies in the process. With his role, Carrey successfully sells himself in a children's movie without simultaneously scaring the crap out the target audience like he did in A Christmas Carol. Most importantly...

Title: Mr. Popper’s Penguins Director: Mark Waters (‘Mean Girls,’ ‘Freaky Friday (2003)’) Starring: Jim Carrey, Carla Cugino (‘Sucker Punch’) and Angela Lansbury It’s not often when a Golden Globe-winning actor is upstaged by animals in a movie. But that’s certainly the case in the new live-action comedy ‘Mr. Popper’s Penguins,’ which stars Jim Carrey in the title role and is based on the 1939 book of the same name by Richard and Florence Atwater. Director Mark Waters successfully appeals to children, his targeted audience, by using real penguins instead of CGI in the film, but ultimately fails to connect with adults with the lack of emotions exhibited by Carrey. ‘Mr....

One may not expect much from a Jim Carrey movie about a workaholic who saves his relationship with his family by adopting some penguins, but “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” is a uniquely funny film and deserves more credit. Fans of Richard and Florence Atwater’s book should be forewarned, however: Changes have been made to the story line from the classic tale so you may not recognize your beloved Mr. Popper.
Not to say that this “Mr. Popper” isn’t a family-friendly film, as it does have all the cliché elements of a kids’ flick, plus Carrey’s usual humor sanctioned for a PG audience.
The movie opens with Tom Popper as a young boy constantly having to communicate with his globe-trotting father via radio transmitter.

Mr. Popper's Penguins Directed by: Mark Waters Written by: Sean Anders, John Morris and Jared Stern (screenplay), Richard and Florence Atwater (novel) Starring: Jim Carrey, Carla Gugino If you dismiss Mr. Popper's Penguins based on the trailer alone, you would be selling the movie short. The trailer makes the film look stupid to point of embarrassment. I had been dreading covering the film, but I have kids, so I usually cover family films. I actually thought that I was taking one for the team when I agreed to review the film, but I found the film to be charming and sweet, with just the right dose of Mr.Carrey. I might have even gotten a little choked up. Carrey plays Mr. Popper, a slick businessman who specializes in real estate acquisitions in New York. He has set his sights on Tavern on the Green, a third generation family restaurant that has seen better days.

Before I get too gross I'll tell you Mr. Popper's Penguins is based on the children's book by Richard and Florence Atwater. It centers on Tom Popper (Jim Carrey), a man who suddenly inherits six penguins from his never-there and no deceased father. He's divorced from his wife (Carla Gugino) and sees his two kids Janie and Billy (Madeline Carroll and Maxwell Perry Cotton) every other weekend. And while Billy seems to have a decent relationship with his father, Janie seems more interested in her cell phone and the boy at school than her father,...

As bastardizations of beloved children’s books go, this one isn’t terrible—certainly not as offensive as The Cat in the Hat, for instance—but it has the potential to be a genuinely good movie and blows it. That’s a real shame. In a total reinvention of Richard and Florence Atwater’s prize-winning 1938 book, Jim Carrey plays a hotshot New York City real-estate dealmaker (and divorced dad) whose globe-trotting father was a distant presence as he was growing up. When the old man dies he bequeaths to his son a live penguin; then, through a miscommunication, apartment-dweller Carrey acquires— —five more of the…...

Review in a Hurry: Cross-breeding pet antics from Ace Ventura with an absent-dad storyline from Liar Liar, this Jim Carrey and flippered-friends flick waddles unevenly through family comedy territory. Despite humor that relies too heavily on bird farting and pooping, the sometimes-sweet Penguins doesn't stink. The Bigger Picture: Devoted fans of the 1938 novel, from which Penguins was adapted, will probably object to all the changes. Written by Richard and Florence Atwater, the classic book centers on a poor, small-town house painter and his family who inherit 12 penguins from an Antarctic explorer/pen pal. Well, this being a modern-day big-screen makeover, Mr. Popper (Carrey) is now a wealthy, Manhattan-based...

The summer movie season typically is characterized by big stars driving massive special-effects-laden blockbusters. Mr. Popper's Penguins takes the opposite approach, hanging its hopes on six pint-size leads who dream of swimming circles around the competition. Bitey, Lovey, Loudy, Stinky, Nimrod, and Captain are the tuxedo-clad birds joining Jim Carrey and Carla Gugino for an adaptation of Richard and Florence Atwater's classic children's novels. Gugino spoke to FilmCritic.com about her live-action kid-friendly roles and the joy of sharing scenes with a gifted comedian like Carrey. Q: Did Jim ever say at any point during the shoot, "This isn't how we did it on Ace Ventura"? A: [Laughs] No. I think he's only interested in breaking new comedic ground and being as creative as he can. So no, but that is really funny. Q: How is it that you guys have never worked together before?...

The upcoming comedy Mr. Popper's Penguins began as a 1938 children's book written by Richard and Florence Atwater, one that many might remember from elementary school. Initially set to be directed by Noah Baumbach (Greenberg) and star Ben Stiller, the movie was likely a different movie then, before Twentieth Century Fox turned it into a vehicle for Jim Carrey with Mark Waters (Ghosts of Girlfriend's Past) directing.
Opening in a packed summer movie season, Fox is banking on audiences getting excited about seeing Carrey goof around with a bunch of penguins, releasing both an international trailer and a domestic trailer in the past two months to promote the movie. Mr. Popper's Penguins was originally conceived as a children's book written by Richard & Florence Atwater in 1938. The original story followed a house painter who dreams of traveling to the Antarctic and gets his dreams partially come true when he comes into the possession of two penguins who eventually blossom into ten more. Children and parents have been delighted by the story 's humor and pathos for decades, and the book has often been assigned reading in elementary schools.

After branching out a bit with I Love You Phillip Morris last year, Jim Carrey is right back on the mainstream comedy bandwagon again with Mr. Popper's Penguins, an adaptation of the popular children's book by Richard and Florence Atwater. The book tells the story of a painter named Mr. Popper who receives a penguin as a gift from a friend and eventually ends up with a house full of them. They start eating his family out of house and home, so he decides to take them on tour as a performing troupe of sorts. According to Wikipedia [1], the book has been on the reading curriculum for many elementary schools in the U.S., but I certainly don't remember ever reading it here in Canada. It looks like a pretty harmless family film, although the trailer doesn't seem particularly funny either. Once upon a time the movie was supposed to...

The anticipated first teaser trailer from "Mr. Popper's Penguins" is finally released. 20th Century Fox has released the video for viewing pleasure on Wednesday, March 23 at Sea World in San Diego, California. Although it does not give any hint about the plot, the footage shows Jim Carrey enjoys having dinner with six penguins, with which Carrey's character shares the apartment.
The upcoming comedy movie follows Carrey's Mr. Popper as a businessman whose life has changed after he inherits a flightless bird from his estranged father. Later, he comes into possession of a playful female penguin as well, which leads to his penguins expanding their family. Mr. Popper then trains them to perform in a traveling show.
The family movie also features Carla Gugino, Angela Lansbury, Ophelia Lovibond, and Philip Baker Hall. James Tupper, Clark Gregg, David Krumholtz, and Andrew Stewart-Jones are additionally included in the production.

A quick scan of Jim Carrey's filmography has re-confirmed what I've suspected for awhile. There aren't very many of his movies I actually dig. In fact, I haven't liked a movie he's starred in since 2004's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. That's one hell of a drought. The dry spell looks to be continuing with his latest, Mr. Popper's Penguins. Based on Richard and Florence Atwater's 1938...

When Richard and Florence Atwater wrote "Mr. Popper's Penguins" in 1938, do you think they expected, one day, it would be a vehicle for an over-the-hill comedian where he teaches the titular creatures to dance to a grating late-twentieth-century pop staple that people only like for ironic reasons? Because that is what the trailer for "Mr. Popper's Penguins" represents. The book has been turned into a big summer release from Fox, that can serve equally as a merchandising opportunity, because what kid isn't going to want their own plush penguin after seeing this saccharine clip? Originally conceived as a story…...

Back in January, we got our first look at some photos with Jim Carrey and some adorable penguins on the set of the adaptation of the classic children's book Mr. Popper's Penguins. Now we have a cute teaser trailer featuring Carrey and these lovable Arctic birds that should have families excited for the film's release this summer on June 17th. Though the comedy is a bit silly, the penguins aren't made out to be annoying talking animals like Yogi Bear or Alvin and the Chipmunks, and Carrey always brings the right amount of energy and charisma to any role. This could be worth checking out, but you can see for yourself below. Here's the teaser trailer for Mr. Popper's Penguins: You can also watch the Mr. Popper's Penguins trailer in High Definition on Fandango The original story, written by Richard and Florence Atwater in 1938, has been changed to move Mr.

There was a time when this story might have involved the Greenberg re-teaming of Ben Stiller and Noah Baumbach. We're thinking that would have been a very different film to the Mr Popper's Penguins evidenced in this teaser trailer that's just arrived online.A lot's predictable in this clip of Jim Carrey's latest, from the star's put-upon schtick to the inevitable use of Vanilla Ice on the soundtrack (although that may just be for the trailer and not in the film - it isn't what Carrey and the penguins are actually dancing to). So your charm quota may be filled by the warm-hearted animal antics, or you may shut your browser in annoyance and seek out your Eternal Sunshine DVD.Richard and Florence Atwater's 1938 children's novel involves a humble housepainter who receives a pair of penguins in the post (all right, enough alliteration), the offspring of which eventually...

Based on the acclaimed children's book, the film also stars Carla Gugino, Ophelia Lovibond, and Philip Baker Hall. Directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls), the comedy is set to hit theaters on August 12, 2011. Mr. Popper's Penguins, based loosely on the book written by Richard & Florence Atwater in 1938, tells the story of a New York businessman named Mr. Popper who unexpectedly comes into possession of twelve Adelie penguins. While at first he regards them as an utter nuisance, he eventually realizes they've changed his life for the better.
