Joni Mitchell performed Elton John’s “I’m Still Standing” at the Library of Congress 2024 Gershwin Prize for Popular Song ceremony, which took place last month at Dar Revolution Hall in Washington, D.C., and aired last night, April 8, on PBS. Her rendition included lyrical twists to fit her own style, with the approval of the night’s honorees, John and Bernie Taupin.

Elton John performed on Sunday night at the Glastonbury Festival and dedicated his performance to his late friend George Michael‘s 60th birthday by singing Michael’s hit song “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me.”
John started off the two-hour concert by introducing his band members and announced to the crowd, “It’s a very, very special day today and I wonder how I’m going to approach it.”
He continued on to introduce Michael, saying, “One of Britain’s most fantastic songwriters, singers, artists was George Michael,” to which the crowd cheered.
Before he started the song he added, “He was my friend, he was an inspiration, and today would have been his 60th birthday. So I want to dedicate this song to his memory. And all of the music he left us with, which is so gorgeous. This is for you, George.”

Sir Elton John delivered his final performance in the UK on Sunday at the 2023 Glastonbury Music Festival as part of his ongoing “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour.
The 20-song set included fan favorites, live rarities, and several surprise guest appearances. To open the show, John performed his cover of The Who’s “Pinball Wizard” for the first time since 2009. From there, he treated the massive crowd to renditions of “The Bitch Is Back,” “Bennie and the Jets,” “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” and “I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues.”
With the accompaniment of Gabriels’ Jacob Lusk and London Community Gospel Choir, John also dusted off Are You Ready for Love for the first time since 2014. Other surprise guests included The Killers’ Brandon Flowers, who joined John for “Tiny Dancer,” and Rina Sawayama, who joined in for a duet of “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.”

It was a balmy Sunday evening on the last night of Glastonbury‘s 2023 edition and the most casual of observers would’ve been forgiven for thinking that Worthy Farm had transformed itself into an Elton John clone factory. Across the site, festival-goers were decked out in sequined knock-offs of the legendary singer’s iconic Dodgers Baseball outfit, feather boas, and oversized sunglasses befitting of the man himself.

As their name suggests, Gabriels are blessed with the voice of an angel. It belongs to Jacob Lusk, a 35-year-old gospel singer with the power to break your heart with a mere vocal quiver. On Angels & Queens, the LA-based trio’s forthcoming debut album, he channels Nina Simone and Billie Holiday as he wrings every drop of emotion from the group’s songs of love and loss. Numbered among their ever-growing army of fans is Elton John, who called last year’s EP Love and Hate in a Different Time “one of the most seminal records I’ve heard in the last 10 years”.
Lusk’s soaring vocals provide the perfect complement for the rich blend of electronics and orchestration created by his bandmates, British producer Ryan Hope and Armenian-American instrumentalist Ari Balouzian. The three have been close since meeting in 2015 – a fact which they still find surprising. “We’re very different,...

Gabriels have just five songs to their name, but one of them verges on the sublime. “Professional,” which came out toward the end of 2020, embraces the off-kilter swoon of jazz vocalists like Billie Holiday or Andy Bey, as singer Jacob Lusk sends his voice gently dive-bombing to the floor and then yanks it back up like a yo-yo, ducking and weaving around a glum string section. The strings fall away, leaving Lusk alone for a late-night, empty-bar, alone-at-the-piano interlude, and then the fireworks begin: A lazy beat enters, spurring the...

American Idol has been headed straight for an iceberg the last couple of seasons — a secret to no one except, perhaps, key executives at Fox and Fremantle Media.
Yet their recent chatter about changes to the show’s upcoming (and pivotal) Season 13 — which has been focused almost entirely on a rebooted judges’ panel, and not a rebooted outlook on what a judges’ panel should actually do – has me concerned that they’re merely slapping a fresh coat of paint on the luxury cruiseliner of reality competition shows. And really, what’s the point of that if the destination continues to...

There've been complaints that last night's American Idol, themed around the hits and performances of past Idol winners, was old-fashioned and schmaltzy. Hey, morons: That's why I watchAmerican Idol. I want ancient, Wayne Newton-y performances from Mormon teenagers in pain. I want the new Rosemary Clooney to woo me in a collared denim dress that her great-grandmother weaved. I want singers who pick songs by Kenny Rogers or Alannah Myles to feel "naughty." Bring me the home-schooled!
I loved last night's episode, even when truly awful songs like Ruben Studdard's "Flying Without Wings" threatened to curbstomp us with hopelessness. For me, ranking the top 10 was a cinch -- though apparently I disagree with most of you about how interesting Angela Miller is. Guys, her emotions range from "happy" to "happy, but quiet sometimes." Come on.
One last note before I write another 200 words about Lazaro Arbos that amount to "Good try,...

If American Idol wanted to find its Season 12 winner via personal ad, the copy would probably read something like this:
Top-rated Reality Show Iso Big-voiced Diva | Been dreaming for six years now about discovering America’s next great female artist — though not the “current” type that looks and sounds like she spontaneously sprouted from the dark, moist corner of a dumpster. (Sorry, wannabe Ke$has!) Turn-ons include girl-next-door charm, working-class backstories and the ability to crush a glory note like The Rock slamming his fist down on an empty Diet Coke can. There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

American Idol is my baby. My girl. My boyfriend with the toothy, messed-up grin. Idol is my everything -- and it's certainly better than The Voice, but if it makes you uncomfortable to admit that, we can pretend this sentence never happened. Bottom line: Idol is back with a weird group of strangers, and after their first week of competition, my contestant rankings have shifted like abacus beads tabulating Steven Tyler's age.
In zany news, Ryan Seacrest announced that the lowest male and female vote-getters this week will be offered up to the judges like virgins at a volcano, and it's up to Randy, J-Lo, and Steven to pick which of the losers will leave. Very So You Think You Can Dance! I approve. The gents sang Stevie Wonder classics while the ladies toasted Whitney Houston. Some ruled. Some sucked. Lifeeee.
13. Shannon Magrane, "I Have Nothing"
Oh, honey. You have less than nothing.

At long last, we've made it through the wilderness; the "American Idol" auditions are finally at an end, and now the real competition (such as it is) begins. After treading water for weeks with music-free group nights and tedious eliminations, let's jump straight to the performances, where we witnessed the Top 12 male vocalists -- plus the mystery 13th contestant -- taking to the stage with the song of their choice, each one vying for your vote.

This week on American Idol, the semifinalists were chosen! Forty two contestants were cut to the top twenty four which made for some very painful eliminations yet still one of the most talented top twenty four of the series. The judges came face to face with each remaining contestant individually to give the good and bad news, with explanations in tow. While the cuts were deep and disappointing, for the most part, the eliminations made complete sense. As of yet, there were no cuts that left us speechless… but we’ll have to wait until the rest of the top twenty four is revealed tonight for that to remain true.
Setting the bar high for her fellow competitors, Elise Testone made it to the top twenty four and is definitely a force to be reckoned with. She’s the one to beat. Jen Hirsch, who may remind some of Demi Lovato,...

You know what would make American Idol better? Or The Voice? Or X Factor, Project Runway, So You Think You Can Dance, or any reality competition requiring an assessment of talent? If it was acceptable to tell auditioners, "You're very talented, but I'm sorry, you're a loser. Thank you for your time."
Loser. That's a word I need to hear more. Because here's the thing about Idol's eleventh year of pop pageantry and growly Georgia-on-my-Mind-yness: I can't root for contestants who sing well but reek of contrivance, ineptitude, or losery loserness. How can anyone complain about an American Idol episode that packed in performances from more than 50 singers, a heaping portion of maniacal/delightful bitchery courtesy of “The Vocal Coach from Hell,” and a genuine emotional breakdown from soundbite-spewing cool kid Heejun Han? Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? In its 11th season (or 77th in canine years), American Idol, that rheumy-eyed toy poodle with the stiff hind end, is suddenly jumping through hoops of fire, walking tightropes on its front paws, and daring to dye its coat in shocking new hues.
Indeed, the show’s first visit to Pittsburgh, Pa, found Steven Tyler cutting short a dirty limerick, a guy with a deeply compelling backstory failing to get a Golden Ticket to Hollywood, and not a single cruel-joke/obvious-gimmick audition in the course of the one-hour telecast.

It’s Paula Abdul’s worst nightmare. No, CBS isn’t forcing the “Vibeology” singer to quit The X Factor in order to produce a second season of Live to Dance (bet you already forgot about that one, didn’t you?), but rather, two of the three acts in her “Groups” category got eliminated during the first two results-show telecasts of her new Fox series. It was once again time to face the music, as The X Factor Top 11 hit the stage for Movie Night!
I hope you had your popcorn ready because L.A. Reid continued his stint as the worst new reality judge on television and Steve Jones remained steadfast in cutting off the panelists as many times as he could in a two hour span.
Oh yeah! The 11 acts also performed their hearts out for America's vote! Let's take a look at the performances...
Stacy Francis "The Queen of the Night" - No Nicole, Stacy having a big diva moment is not her stepping out her element. The upbeat nature of this song, however, was out of her element, and it proved to be detrimental as she seemed to be out of breath throughout the performance.
My Score: 4/10
Obscure Movie Score: The Bodyguard is way too popular to register in this ranking system.

Did you know every bit of plastic that has ever been created still exists? Well, Lauren Alaina does and she and the rest of the "American Idol" season 10 top 11 finalists want to do something to put a stop to plastic pollution.
So Alaina, along with Scotty McCreery, Haley Reinhart, James Durbin, Jacob Lusk, Casey Abrams, Stefano Langone, Paul McDonald, Pia Toscano, Naima Adedapo and Thia Megia -- reunited recently. Not for another concert, but to inspire fans to refuse disposable plastic -- according to the Plastic Pollution Coalition, the greatest source of plastic pollution on our planet.

Depending on how your brain works, night one of The X Factor‘s “Boot Camp” round might’ve reminded you of the horrifying 1971 movie A Clockwork Orange or Dolly Parton’s tearjerking 1971 ballad “Coat of Many Colors.”
On one hand, the 90-minute telecast featured a relentless assault on the senses, with what felt like each and every one of the show’s 162 remaining musical acts flashing past our propped-open eyes in rapid succession, their voices melding into an indistinguishable din of noise. And yet, thanks to a dozen or so truly promising voices (all of ‘em featured in brief but...

Last month, while interviewing executive producer Nigel Lythgoe for a story about possible changes to American Idol for its upcoming eleventh season, I proposed the idea that the show should introduce a list of 11 songs that would be banned from the live performance rounds on the grounds that they’ve been done to death in previous seasons. Lythgoe’s response caught me off guard: “Well, Mike, if you want to write down and send me 11 songs that you don’t want to hear again, I will put them through to the committee.”
Well, sir, you don’t have to ask me twice!

Pia Toscano is looking forward to releasing her first single "This Time" on July 12, but fans who are itching to get the first taste of her upcoming debut won't have to wait until next week to listen to the song. She has showcased it live for the first time ever during "American Idol" tour opener on July 6, and footage from the concert hit the web one day after.
Co-written and co-produced by Ester Dean, the song starts with an acoustic guitar and a simple beat. It's about going through a rough break-up and finding her true happiness. "Don't try to stop me with the words you say/ 'cause I'm sick and tired of the game you play/ Gonna bring myself gonna make the change/ And like a butterfly Imma spread my wings," Pia belted out its lyrics.

2011 "American Idol" summer tour has officially been kicked off on July 6. Casey Abrams, Haley Reinhart, Jacob Lusk, James Durbin, Lauren Alaina, Naima Adedapo, Paul McDonald, Pia Toscano, Scotty McCreery, Stefano Langone and Thia Megia made their live performances in front of their fans in the Salt Lake City.
One of the highlights from the Wednesday concert was the live showcase of Pia's debut single "This Time". The rumored girlfriend of Mark Ballas gave concertgoers the first listen to the Ester Dean-written single after Naima finished her solo set with a rendition of Jennifer Lopez's "On the Floor".
According to USA Today, the song starts with little more than an acoustic guitar and a simple beat. It later steadily builds to a big, singalong chorus, anchored by the lyrical hook of "This time, I'm gonna do it my way." The song will officially be released on July 12, and is...

Yesterday’s news that Pia Toscano has signed with Interscope Records has us wondering: After this summer’s American Idols Live! tour (during which everyone will be Extra Alive), who else from season 10 will you really want to hear from again?
Pia Toscano is this rare Idol contestant who still manages to create huge buzz. She’s a pretty girl who could sing well, so how dare America get it wrong? I like Pia’s voice — never detected much musical intrigue from her, but I suppose that’s what production teams are for. The way she’s still kind of...

Earlier this month, "American Idol" contestant Paul McDonald and "Twilight" star Nikki Reed used the MTV Movie Awards as the perfect opportunity to take their engagement public, only months after they began dating.
When MTV News caught up with McDonald at the "American Idol" season 10 tour press day in Los Angeles, the singer opened up about planning the big day. "Well, yeah, I'm not allowed to say too, too much about that stuff, but it's going good," he dished. "I love her to death."
While outside observers may have felt that the two were rushing to the altar, McDonald says that they fell in love at first sight, which was even more surprising for him. "She's amazing. It's kind of one of those things you don't expect,...

The confetti’s been swept up. The summer tour dates have been announced. And Scotty McCreery’s “I Love You This Big” is headed for a date with country radio. All of which is another way of saying that American Idol‘s 11th season is a mere seven months away.
With that in mind, I sat down and hammered out a list of 10 changes I’d make to the Idol machine to keep it humming along in high-rated, entertaining fashion. Check out my list of proposed tweaks, then hit the comments and suggest your own!

Top 13 “Born This Way” Normally I hate the forced group number, but this wasn’t as painful as in years past. Everyone could dance enough to get by and their voices sounded good together. Plus, who was really listening? I was mesmerized by how the wardrobe department managed to capture all of their personalities in white.

It was quite a spectacular night at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live Wednesday night for the American Idol Season 10 finale. Two very young country hopefuls were in the music battle of their lives but first, today’s music idols took over the stage for a two hour extravaganza.
The first hour featured performances by the reunited Top 13 finalists, Judas Priest, Kirk Franklin and Gladys Knight, Jack Black, Beyoncé, Tony Bennett, Lil Jon and TLC, and Tim McGraw. The top 13 performed Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” which wasn’t wonderful…the former contestants aren’t exactly in a glee club. James Durbin seemed to have quite a blast performing with Judas Priest just as Jacob Lusk seemed to be having the time of his life performing “Smile” with Kirk Franklin and Gladys Knight. Finale night was not only a treat for the final two but a reward for the...

Sometimes I seriously question my obsession with American Idol. After all, there’s no other show on television that consistently causes spikes in my blood pressure — whether it’s from the blind fury I feel toward the show’s inept and inconsistent judging panel, the frustration I experience with its thoroughly uninspired theme nights and song lists, or the rolling rage of wondering things like “Where the frak is Pia Toscano’s finale duet?”
But Wednesday night’s Season 10 finale managed to dilute my cynicism, erase my grouchiness, and bring real human tears to my eyes. Call me a sentimental fool,...

With more A-list musical performances than your typical awards show, the ‘American Idol’ finale blew everyone out of the water May 25! The show was epic!
The American Idol creators and producers must have been eating their Wheaties and drinking their Red Bull this week. Usually reality competition shows have lackluster, cheesy and boring finales, but that wasn’t the case with the American Idol Grand Finale May 25 — it was better than the Grammys!
The night started with a cute — albeit cheesy — Lady Gaga cover from the top 13 contestants that reminded us of a Glee performance. However, it was only up hill from there. Jack Black performed a duet with Casey Abrams; James Durbin wailed with Judas Priest; Gladys Knight gave a stirring performance with the dynamic Jacob Lusk and the legendary Tony Bennett sang a jazz number with Haley Reinhart.
Throughout the two hour program, the special guest stars just kept on coming.

Who do you love? One of the American Idol Top 13? Beyonce? Tim McGraw? Lady Gaga? Tony Bennett? Judas Priest? or perhaps Carrie Underwood or Marc Anthony? In addition to the two finalists of the hour - Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina - the American Idol Season 10 finale had all of them and more. Whatever your musical taste, chances are you were represented. After an opening number that featured the Top 13 finalists, James Durbin got a shot at starring in his own live metal dream, performing with legendary metal-heads Judas Priest. Even if you don't like metal, the pure vibe alone elevated the energy level - and decibel level - to about 8 million mega-watts at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. In the interest of musical contrast, Jacob Lusk took the stage for "I Smile" with gospel great Kirk Franklin and Gladys Knight for some upbeat soul that had the house shakin'.

Where is probably the one and only place in the world where you can find Midwestern ladies in prom/bridesmaid dresses, people speaking a wide variety of languages, poster board signs covered in blinking lights, dozens of cowboy hats, and a mish-mash of the oddball celebrities? The American Idol season finale, of course! I was there last night as the show went down at downtown La’s Nokia Theater, and the only way to really describe what was going on is to call it exactly what it was: a crazy spectacle. I’m not exaggerating: Moms were really prowling around in prom/bridesmaid dresses!

"American Idol" brings Season 10 to a close by crowning 17-year-old Scotty McCreery as the winner, in what came as a surprise to absolutely no one who has bene paying attention for the last three months.
He capped things off by singing that horried "I Love You This Big" which was tempered a bit in its awfulness by hugging his family and getting choked up. Aww.
Considering the target audience for Scotty, he could go on to be very successful after "Idol." What do you think, "Idol" fans?

After what Ryan Seacrest labeled a “world record” 122 million votes, American Idol‘s wild and wooly 10th season has its champion. [Update: Check out our full finale recap here.] Indeed, at the end of a fast-paced and mostly entertaining results-show finale punctuated by a fabulous Haley Reinhart-Tony Bennett duet, a fascinatingly campy Tom Jones tribute featuring the Top 6 guys, and shining moments for James Durbin, Jacob Lusk, and pretty much every eliminated member of Season 10′s Top 13 – but which strangely seemed to downplay the presence of the two remaining finalists — the confetti shower went to…Scotty McCreery!

Well, that was fast. Doesn't it seem like we just welcomed Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler to the American Idol judges table? That Randy Jackson just said that Jacob Lusk gave one of the best-ever performances on the Idol stage? That they just saved Casey Abrams from Top 11 obscurity? That J.Lo just wept over Pia Toscano? But heading into Wednesday's Idol finale, the only opinion that mattered belonged to "America," which was tasked with choosing between Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery, both cutie-pie teens with country roots and aw-shucks charm. We can't speak for the passage of time, but we can say that a record 122.4 million votes were cast last night in favor of... The...

Baby lock them doors and turn the lights down low, because tonight the tenth insane season of "American Idol" is coming to a close.
It’s a cycle that brought us singing cleaning ladies, a scatting jazz freak, a galloping Nashville indie heartthrob, a growling sex kitten piñata, a pyromaniac rocker, a gospel lovin' spa concierge straight out of Compton, and, ultimately, two country fetus finalists who were born after Dr. Dre's "The Chronic" hit stores. With Simon Cowell on to bigger (and better?) projects, all eyes were on two new judges, more concerned with promoting their new singles than giving honest critiques.
Welcome to "American Idol X: Everybody’s Ridiculous (And Beautiful And Perfect!)"
The two hour seven minute finale spectacular kicks off at 8pm Edt, and I’ll be live-blogging every hot mess moment of it! The random cameos! The jaw-dropping group numbers! Randy Jackson’s sure-to-be-absurd outfit!

HollywoodNews.com: It looks like Twitter has a way of predicting who will take the ‘American Idol’ title tonight as someone will be crowned the latest winner.
Over the last few weeks, the person who gets the most tweets in the first 24 hours after the performance show ends up being eliminated, states E! News. YapTV has reportedly been keeping track of this and has found it to be true for the eliminations of Jacob Lusk, James Durbin and Haley Reinhart.
Now, if this is to be believed, it looks like Lauren Alaina will be falling short and Scotty McCreery will take the title.
Lauren Alaina is reportedly far ahead in the number of tweets.
Do you think this is what will happen?

Scotty McCreery is the new " American Idol " champion. The 17-year-old was never in the bottom two, and his confidence seemed to grow as the finale neared. He is the second country winner, behind Carrie Underwood . McCreery beat out fellow teenage Lauren Alaina for the title. A total of 122 million votes were cast in the finale, a show record. Over the course of the season, nearly three-quarters of a billion votes were cast, host Ryan Seacrest announced. The night also featured a number of sensational musical performances, including several where finalists were paired with musical legends. James Durbin rocked out with Judas Priest , Jacob Lusk sang with Kirk Franklin , Haley Reinhart did a duet with Tony Bennett , and the female finalists sang with both Beyonce and TLC . The top two got to perform with their own Idols. McCreery sang with " Live Like You Were Dying " with Tim McGraw , while Alaina sang...

Either way, a teenage country singer was going to take home the season 10 "American Idol" crown Wednesday night (May 25), it was just a matter of whether it was Scotty McCreery or Lauren Alaina.
After Tuesday night's final performance episode, Fox announced that more than 122 million votes poured in, marking a new record in "Idol" history, bringing the season total to more than 730 million votes. And while Scotty looked like the unbeatable favorite, there was some doubt going into the finale, thanks to Lauren's gutsy performance just 24 hours before and her knockout delivery of what could have been her "Idol" coronation tune, "Like My Mother Does."

The youngest-ever finalists -- Lauren Alaina, 16, and Scotty McCreery, 17, -- take the stage for the two-night finale, beginning Tuesday, May 24.
In a half-hour interview the only time executive producer Nigel Lythgoe is quiet -- and looks genuinely perplexed -- is as he considers which teenager will be crowned Season 10's "American Idol."
"If Scotty wins, I believe he could be the biggest 'American Idol' selling artist of all time," Lythgoe tells Zap2it.
"Whoever it is, the fact is, it's America's vote."
But when you have had a season with a diverse array of artists, where will the Casey Abrams, Jacob Lusk and Paul McDonald fans shift their alliance?
"I don't know who James' votes will go to," Lyhtgoe says of James Durbin, who left two weeks ago. "I don't know who a rocker votes for in who's left. I truly don't know. You've got two country [singers] there.
