Remember the tale of the Pied Piper of Hamelin from our childhood? The one where a piper came to rid the town of rats by playing his magical tunes, luring the pests away into the lake? But when he wasn’t paid as promised, he took away the children as revenge. Classic folklore, right? But what if I told you that legend has it that the Pied Piper isn’t just a story of the past? He still lurks among us. Not in bright, colorful clothes, but as a dark and ominous creature, playing his haunting musical hymns in a sinister manner. In the movie The Piper, directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen, the story goes like this: Catherine, inspired by the legend of the Pied Piper, creates a concerto for children. But when the tunes from her concerto lead to tragic consequences, causing the deaths of children, she tries to destroy them.

With a small film industry, Iceland has taken its time to catch on to the Scandinoir trend – though not actually in Scandinavia, it has a similar climate and closely related culture – but it has punched well above its weight when it comes to books in the genre. Cold is based on the hit novel Kuldi (translated into English as The Undesired) by Yrsa Sigurðardóttir, and although it has a few shortcomings, it’s a good introduction for those with an appetite for such tales.
The standard advice when adapting a book to film is to strip out the subplots as much as possible. Short stories and novellas tend to be a better fit for a two hour runtime. Here, however, Erlingur Thoroddsen has done a fairly good job of cramming in an expansive and complicated story with very little compromise. This makes it possible for him to address the several.

The German legend of The Pied Piper of Hamelin is the basis of two recent horror productions. The first of these “twin films” to receive a wide release is Erlingur Thoroddsen’s take, which shares the same title as Anthony Waller’s adaptation. And although both reimaginings feature demonic updates of that famous ratcatcher, only Thoroddsen’s story appears to underscore the musical component.
The Piper finds Charlotte Hope’s (The Nun) character Mel trapped in a familiar situation: her aspirations come at a great cost, and the consequences will be harmful. Here the young composer wants a future in her orchestra ensemble as well as the means to take care of her deaf daughter (Aoibhe O’Flanagan). Stealing a concerto from the estate of her recently departed mentor (Louise Gold) seems like the only option, but once the protagonist goes through with the plan, Mel’s conductor (Julian Sands) then...

Exclusive: Bernard Kira, the manager and producer behind the nine-year-old shingle Bmk-ent, has rebranded the company as Apparent Motion Media, also announcing his signing of International Emmy winner Fernando Rovzar (Hotel Cocaine).
Kira’s move to rebrand comes as he preps Higher Ground, his third film as a producer, and second for an in-house client. Heading into production in March, the film is based on a script discovered by Apparent Motion client Charlie Weber (How to Get Away with Murder), which was developed internally, before being packaged and sold with Weber headlining. Previously, Kira set up client Erlingur Thoroddsen’s film The Piper, a horror pic poised to hit theaters on March 8.
In a statement on the re-launch of his company, Kira made the observation that “artists are becoming more proactive in generating their own opportunities and controlling the trajectory of their careers.” He added that he “started Bmk-ent with...

Back in June of 2021, it was announced that Julian Sands, best known around here for playing the Warlock in the 1989 horror film fittingly titled Warlock and then coming back for the sequel Warlock: The Armageddon, had signed on to star in a new genre project called The Piper, which puts a horrific twist on the legend of the Pied Piper. Sadly, it was only seven months later that we heard Sands had gone missing while hiking on California’s Mount Baldy. Six months later, his body was found. He did get to work on The Piper before he passed away, though, and the film is now ready to make its way out into the world. It’s set to receive a theatrical and digital/on demand release on March 8th, and with that date exactly one month away a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

The late Julian Sands stars opposite Charlotte Hope in The Piper, and the trailer for the movie has landed. More here.
The actor Julian Sands left us in 2023, when he disappeared while mountaineering in California at the start of the year. Aged just 65, he left behind a wealth of acting work, including a handful of movies he’d shot but hadn’t been released.
Here’s one of them now. It’s called The Piper, and Sands co-stars with Charlotte Hope in the film. It looks a hearty mix of classical music and horror, and thus far, we have but a smattering of information about it. We shall thus duly share with you what we have.
The logline for the movie reads, quite simply:
When a composer must finish her late mentor’s concerto, she discovers that playing its music summons deadly consequences.

Paris-based The Party Film Sales has boarded renowned Icelandic auteur Rúnar Rúnarsson’s fourth pic, “When the Light Breaks,” which is selected for Göteborg’s Nordic Film Market’s works in progress session.
Rúnarsson serves as producer together with Heather Millard of Iceland’s Compass Films, in co-production with local banner Halibut, Holland’s Revolver, France’s Eaux Vives/Jour2Fête and Croatia’s MP Film.
Lauded for his coming-of age tales set against Iceland’s majestic scenery, Rúnarsson saw his international breakthrough in 2008 with his Oscar-nominated short “Two Birds.” Since then, he has delivered equally poetic fare in the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight 2011 entry “Volcano,” San Sebastian 2015 winner “Sparrows “ and 2019 Valladolid and Lübeck fest winner “Echo.”
As in his earlier works, Rúnarsson was inspired by a personal event for “When the Light Breaks”. “Ever since experiencing the loss of a friend as a young man, I wanted to deal with the...

What are the chances that two films called The Piper, both horror films involving the legend of The Pied Piper, would come out in the same year? And that both would be hard to see? While I haven’t seen the one starring Liz Hurley yet, I did get a chance to see the one written and directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen and featuring the late Julian Sands in one of his last roles.
It opens with the voice of Gustafson (Sands) on the phone trying to talk Katherine out of destroying the last copy of her Concerto for Children. She tells him “It is evil, no one must ever know about it” before rushing outside to try and burn it in her fire pit. But something with glowing eyes intervenes, and she burns while the manuscript survives.

Going off to a secluded location always leads to disaster. Characters swap the bright lights of the city for a respite far removed from civilization, unaware that danger lurks in the woods. Toss in a tortured relationship, and it’s the perfect storm. In celebration of Pride Month, let’s take a closer look at two such films, Icelandic horror/thriller Rift and Canadian psychological terror What Keeps You Alive. Both films depict the maddening descent into chaos, each detailing how a relationship meets a bloody, grisly end. Along the way, you’re whipped into an emotional frenzy.
In director Erlingur Óttar Thoroddsen’s Rift, Gunnar (Björn Stefánsson) and Einar (Sigurður Þór Óskarsson) have split, yet find themselves still emotionally attached and unable to move on. We first meet them months after the breakup when they both attend the same party. Out on the balcony, Gunnar and Einar nurse drinks and try to reconnect.

Now we’re wrapping up the year with a discussion of Carter Smith‘s Into the Dark entry “Midnight Kiss“!
In the film, a group of friends gather at a beautiful desert resort on New Year’s Eve, and play a game called Midnight Kiss, as is their tradition. The purpose of the game is for each of them to find someone with whom to start the New Year. LevelK has boarded Icelandic crime drama “Cold,” directed by Erlingur Óttar Thoroddsen and based on the bestselling book “The Undesired” (“Kuldi”) by Yrsa Sigurdardóttir. Still in production, it was recently pitched at Venice Gap-Financing Market.
The story centers on Óðinn, living alone with his daughter Rún. As he investigates decades-old deaths at a juvenile treatment center, he begins to suspect that the sinister secrets are connected to his ex-wife’s mysterious suicide. As well as his daughter’s strange behavior.
“Erlingur is an established, talented director who respects the audiences and finds it fascinating to thrill them,” says LevelK’s CEO Tine Klint.
“We were captured by his take on the book, his style and the entire team behind the production.”
Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Sara Dögg Ásgeirsdóttir and “Woman at War” lead Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir are all set to star.
“On the surface, ‘Cold’ certainly seems like a classic Nordic noir.

The Venice Film Festival’s market is kicking off with an attendance level close to its 2019 pre-pandemic days and strong interest in feature films and VR works being pitched at its gap-financing platform
“We already have a total of more than 2,400 industry professionals registered to attend, which is close to pre-pandemic levels since in 2019 the number was 2,700 [at the end of the market],” says Pascal Diot, head of the Venice Production Bridge, as the informal mart is known.
Of these, 1,700 are accredited with the Vpb’s Golden Trade pass, while the remaining 1,000 are registered as part of film delegations.
Diot notes that despite the healthy attendance figure, there is clearly a reduced Asian presence this year “Very few Chinese, almost no Japanese, very few Koreans,” he says. A small delegation is coming from Taiwan which, along with France, is a country in focus this year. There is also a much smaller industry presence from Latin America,...

Back in 2012, writer and director Erlingur Thoroddsen made a short film called Child Eater. It was a very good short, a mere fifteen minutes of haunting horror about a boogeyman out to capture kids. Some four years later, it was adapted from the short into a feature film of the same name. Cait Bliss (Towers of Terror) reprises her role from the original short, Helen Connolly, and Thoroddsen returns to his creation as writer and director.

For the second season of its popular horror anthology series “Into the Dark,” the executives at Blumhouse Productions were looking for something extra special: A gay slasher movie. The Hulu Original series premiered last October to positive reviews, with new episodes released monthly and all tied to a certain holiday. The feature-length episodes are essentially films, which allowed Blumhouse to develop relationships with up-and-coming genre writers and directors who may otherwise not have their work seen on such a large platform.
For “Midnight Kiss,” a sexy gay slasher set among a group of La gay friends on New Year’s Eve, 2019, Blumhouse tapped out gay talent — writer Erlingur Thoroddsen and director Carter Smith. Rather than having to sell skeptical execs on a gay script, Thoroddsen was thrilled to learn Blumhouse was chasing gay content.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the most overlooked and/or underrated movie of 2017?
E. Oliver Whitney, Screencrush.com, @cinemabite
Despite the critical praise, “A Fantastic Woman” only a one-week qualifying run last month, and I worry is it’ll easily be forgotten this awards season. Daniela Vega gives one of the most astounding performances I’ve seen this year, one that comes from somewhere fierce and internal, portraying the life and struggle of a trans woman that cinema has rarely shown an interest in exploring. But since you can’t see it until it has a proper release in Febraury, do check one of the year’s other...

If you caught my recent review of writer/director Erlingur Thoroddsen‘s slow-burn chiller Rift out of Fantastic Fest, you can probably tell pretty immediately how blown away I was by this rather modest, but deeply affecting film. You may have heard of Icelandic director Erlingur Thoroddsen thanks to his feature-length debut Child Eater (see Daniel Kurland’s review), which made the rounds last year at a handful of film festivals and hit DVD and VOD earlier this spring. Erlingur Thoroddsen‘s Rift is an icy “cabin in the hills” thriller worth every scenic gawk; Iceland’s genuine production value featured to a remarkable degree (looming mountain regions to jagged lava fields). Landscapes like a Bob Ross painting and tension like a Justin Benson/Aaron Moorhead production might squeeze. It’s such prime location setting, which Thoroddsen skillfully uses to subtlety wall-in characters and inspire tone-snapping hope. This sets the stage for personal rumination in the most idyllic of lands, where evil may present itself as a wolf of our own conjuring – living, not even hiding, in plain sight.
Thoroddsen boils a complicated relationship between two men – Einar (Sigurður Þór Óskarsson) and Gunnar (Björn Stefánsson) – down to psychological fears. Uncertainty. Life. It’s their status as ex-lovers that unites the two men once again, after Einar leaves Gunnar a vague – and cryptic – voicemail. Gunnar, unable to decipher the message’s intent,...

Not even a year has passed since The Brooklyn Horror Film Festival emerged as a must-attend genre festival, but year two is already looking to cement such talk. We Got This Covered reported from the trenches last October, where I served as one of the festival’s inaugural judges. The films were strong and the drinks stronger, only increasing excitement for year two. Fast-forward to September 2017 and the countdown clock has just about run out. Something we couldn’t be happier for.
Birth.Movies.Death. was lucky enough to announce Brooklyn Horror’s first wave, including buzzed-about highlights such as Tragedy Girls (one of my favorites from SXSW) and Sequence Break (a Fantasia Fest favorite for me). You’ve also got Housewife, Baskin director Can Evrenol’s sophomore feature, among other notable selections. Be sure to peruse Wave 1’s sacrificial offerings, but that’s old news – are you ready for Round 2? I know,...

"Someone is here with me." A short teaser trailer has debuted for an Icelandic Lgbt horror film titled Rift, made by horror filmmaker Erlingur Thoroddsen. The story is about a guy named Gunnar who receives a mysterious call from his ex-boyfriend, who is living in a secluded cabin. He goes out there to find out what's going on, only to discover there's some weird things happening and something haunting them outside the cabin that wants to get in. Starring Björn Stefánsson, Sigurður Þór Óskarsson, and Guðmundur Ólafsson. The film already premiered at the Göteborg Film Festival earlier this year, and is playing at a few other festivals this summer as well, including OutFest in July. This actually looks pretty good, I'm curious. Here's the first teaser trailer (+ poster) for Erlingur Thoroddsen's Rift, from YouTube (via Dread Central): Months after they broke up, Gunnar receives a strange phone call from his ex-boyfriend,...

Like a Halloween moon that glistens deviously once a year, the first-ever Brooklyn Horror Film Festival came, saw and conquered New York City this past weekend. It was a heartwarming start for a little festival that blew up bigger than founder Justin Timms could have ever imagined, after a whopping 18 out of 22 screenings/events played to sold-out crowds. Not only did Erlingur Thoroddsen’s closing-night World Premiere of Child Eater sell out its first screening at Bushwick’s Syndicated Bar + Theater + Kitchen, but a late-night screening had to be scheduled based solely on demand (that too sold out). *full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Terror Films. This critic has worked on publicity, for this film, in the past. Directors/writers: Danny Draven, Paul Davis, Ómar Örn Hauksson, Dean Hewison, Joel Morgan, Johannes Persson, Nicholas Peterson, Erlingur Thoroddsen, Rasmus Wassberg, Sam Dickson, Richard Falkner, Paul Fischer, Jacey Heldrich, Barry Jay, Brian McAuley, David Steenhoek, Aidee Walker. Patient Seven is a horror anthology, from at fifteen writers and directors. Short films, from around the world, make up this recent outing. Comprised of seven short films and one wraparound, there is a little something here for every horror fan. This film fan enjoyed Ómar Örn Hauksson's take on 28 Days Later (2002), with "Undying Love." These two films are very comparable in costume and shooting style. As well, "The Body," which practically begins the anthology, is especially well written, by Paul Fischer and Paul Davis. The comedic twist is a welcomed surprise.
