Exclusive Interview: Richard Bailey (The Dark Sisters) Prior to getting into filmmaking what was your background and what life experiences have you brought into the film world?
I grew up on a small farm in Texas, and so the idea of making movies seemed pretty remote. I found that I had a cinematic imagination. Chores like feeding cows, mowing fields and mending fences were all invested with cinematic flourish. I saw apocalypse-inducing machinery in large rusty tractors. I saw my ghost every day in the fading glass of an antique mirror. I imagined lens flares and tracking shots in all my labours. I’m grateful for the digital technology that makes it possible for people like me to make movies. I’d have no way forward if it wasn’t for digital.
What can you tell us about your horror film The Dark Sisters (2023), without giving any spoilers?

Invention is a tricky thing. It's common for several people to come up with the same novel idea around the same time, as other ideas circulating in their field nudge them in the same direction. And for every celebrated genius who comes to public attention, there are likely a hundred who die in obscurity, their ideas never given form because of their limited means - or simply forgotten. Theresa (Nicole Fancher) may have intermittent access to university facilities but she has only her own money to draw on as she tinkers away in the garage using whatever scraps she can find. She's building a time machine.
Made under similar budgetary constraints, Jacob Leighton Burns' drama is an appealing character study but, sadly, has less to offer as a piece of science fiction. There's an interesting idea here - that to travel in time is to cease to be anchored to.

The Horror Collective have announced they will be releasing Planet Thunder’s bold and fascinating sci-fi body horror film Shifter – which had its world premiere at this year’s deadCenter Film Festival in Oklahoma City, where it won Best Oklahoma Feature – on August 6th on VOD and On Demand platforms.

Director/writer/producer Jacob Burns says:
What excites us most is that it was obvious from the beginning that Jonathan and Shaked were genuine fans of the film. We took a chance on making Shifter because we truly believed in what the film could be,...
