Giancarlo Esposito is taking over the male lead in Netflix’s Shondaland drama The Residence following the passing of Andre Braugher.
Braugher, who died Dec. 11 following a battle with lung cancer, was tapped last February to be the male lead on Netflix’s Shonda Rhimes drama The Residence, starring opposite Uzo Aduba. The White House murder-mystery started production before shutting down amid Hollywood’s dual strikes. Braugher had already completed filming a lot of his scenes on the series, which was scheduled to resume filming last month January. Esposito’s casting means the scenes Braugher had filmed will be reshot on the drama from showrunner Paul William Davies (Scandal), which has continued production amid the recasting.
Here’s the official logline for The Residence, per Netflix: “132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. One wildly eccentric detective. One disastrous State Dinner. The Residence is a screwball whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs...

The entertainment world was recently dealt a heartbreaking blow with beloved actor Andre Braugher passing away unexpectedly at the age of 61. Braugher was best known for his roles on shows like "Homicide: Life on the Street" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine." Before the actor's passing, he had been working on a new TV show for Netflix called "The Residence." It will now serve as the actor's final project. Much remains in flux, but we know quite a bit about the show already.
The eight-episode series hails from Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers, with Paul William Davies on board as the writer and showrunner. It is based on Kate Andersen Brower's book "The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House," but interestingly, it's said that the show will only use the book as a jumping-off point, so it won't be an outright adaptation. The late Andre Braugher’s now-final project — Shondaland’s comedic murder-mystery The Residence — remains unfinished thanks to a shut down sparked by the WGA strike months prior. Although the series had been gearing up to resume production, Braugher’s death Tuesday raises significant questions for the Netflix series’ future.
Four episodes of its eight-episode order were shot during the early days of the writers strike more than six months ago, Deadline reports. While the series is slated to resume shooting Jan. 2, it’s unclear if that date will stick, as producers must now figure out how to proceed without the actor.

Shut down by the WGA strike months ago, Shondaland’s murder-mystery drama The Residence had been gearing up to resume production. On Tuesday, the Netflix series lost one of its stars, Emmy winner André Braugher, who died at the age of 61 after a brief illness.
The Residence, from executive producer/showrunner Paul William Davies and executive producers Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers, shot four episodes of its eight-episode order before suspending filming during the early days of the writers strike more than six months ago.
The series had been slated to return to production Jan. 2, sources tell Deadline. In light of Braugher’s untimely death, it is unclear whether The Residence will keep that date or give the cast and crew more time to mourn while Netflix the producers mull how to continue without the actor. Features the voices of: Will Ferrell, Jamie Foxx, Will Forte, Isla Fisher, Randall Park, Josh Gad, Harvey Guillén, Rob Riggle, Brett Gelman, Jamie Demetriou, Sofia Vergara | Written by Dan Perrault | Directed by Josh Greenbaum
Produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie), this inspired comedy takes the previously family-friendly talking dog movie genre and turns it into an outrageously filthy, frequently gasp-inducing, R-rated laugh riot. It just might be the funniest film of the year.
Will Ferrell (sounding a lot like Paul Rudd) voices Reggie, a hopelessly naïve Border Terrier who can’t see that his owner, Doug (Will Forte) is a hateful, selfish loser who despises him. One day, Doug drives Reggie several miles away and abandons him, though Reggie still thinks they are playing their favourite game, “Fetch and f**k”, so called because that’s what Doug yells, every time Reggie finds his way home again.

Sports and music representation powerhouse Wasserman has finalized its acquisition of Brillstein Entertainment Partners, the venerable Hollywood management and production company. Terms were not disclosed. Deadline exclusively revealed the acquisition talks back in February.
Wasserman chairman and CEO Casey Wasserman and Brillstein co-CEOs Cynthia Pett and Jon Liebman made the announcement. It puts Wasserman, grandson of the iconic Hollywood representative and studio chief Lew Wasserman, directly into the film and TV representation and production game for the first time. It is the second strategic alignment for Wasserman, who took over the lucrative music touring business that was once the most profitable part of the Paradigm agency, at a time when the pandemic grounded live touring revenues.
It would be the latest move in management after 3Arts made a deal with Lionsgate, and Range Media Partners linked with Automatik.
Wasserman, Pett and Liebman believe their cultures will mesh in their compatible business and staffs.

It's not easy being an R-rated comedy in 2023. After enjoying some modest success with the horror-flavored "Cocaine Bear," Universal saw its "Dracula" spin-off "Renfield" flounder at the box office earlier this year. The studio's latest adult-oriented chucklefest, "Strays," didn't fare much better upon its theatrical release in August either. Opening to lukewarm responses, the raunchy dog-com has struggled to make a dent financially.
Another major factor working against "Strays" was timing. Since the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers has continued to dig its heels in rather than address the existential crisis currently faced by the striking actors' and writers' guilds, that means the "Strays" cast has been unable to promote the film. That includes comedic superstars like Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx, who lend their voices to the movie's misbehaving mutts and could've easily gotten more people to turn out for the film, had they been able to make the press rounds.

Josh Greenbaum incorporated footage of actual dogs into the making of 'Strays'.The director has helmed the new comedy movie that tells the story of abandoned pooch Reggie (voiced by Will Ferrell) and his attempts to get revenge on his abusive former owner Doug (Will Forte) and made sure that footage of real canines was heavily featured in the project.Speaking to Collider, Josh said: "I would say 95 per cent of what you just watched is all real dogs, which was really important to me."Obviously, any time it was unsafe for a dog to do anything, it was like, 'Alright, we're gonna go full CG', but for me, I really wanted to make sure at the start that you felt that you were watching real dogs."Josh feels that audiences are aware of the way dogs behave and opted against using CGI trickery for the flick – which also features...

“Strays” might be the most unexpectedly uproarious comedy of the year. And it’s even more satisfying because the words “R-rated dog comedy” probably don’t instill much hope.
And yet, here we are.
It starts to make more sense when you consider that the director behind the project is Josh Greenbaum, who directed 2021’s hilarious “Barb and Star Go to Vista del Mar”. And because it stars Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx as the voice of two dogs who are on a quest (along with their dog pals voiced by Randall Park and Ilsa Fisher) to bring violent revenge to Ferrell’s former owner (Will Forte).
As to how Greenbaum wound up with “Strays,” which is in theaters now, he was sent a pitch email with pretty much the logline above and a “Gif of a small dog humping a larger dog,” which shot it to the top of his reading list.

Chicago – “Strays” is a film that features a cast full of legitimately funny people, but this Hard-r-Rated talking dog movie poops out long before the final credits roll. The film tries to have heart, but is too busy making labored poo-poo jokes to give the schmaltz much gusto.

Strays director Josh Greenbaum has waited four-plus years for today.
In 2019, when Greenbaum started filming Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, he operated under the belief that his feature directorial debut would be a traditional theatrical release. But 2020 had other plans, as Barb and Star became one of many films to go from theatrical to premium VOD or streaming due to the pandemic. But then the impossible happened. The high jinks of Kristen Wiig, Annie Mumolo and Jamie Dornan caught lightning in a bottle, especially Dornan’s beachside serenade to a squabble of seagulls, and the comedy cut through the saturated home market to become a cult hit.
Despite his initial disappointment, Greenbaum soon found himself on a Zoom opposite Guillermo del Toro, who generously agreed to host Barb and Star’s Directors Guild of America Q&a. So the fact that Greenbaum’s debut film was still...

Producer Erik Feig could have been describing “SuperBad” or “Good Boys” when he outlined his new movie to Universal, pitching them on backing his mid-budget film with a detailed slideshow that included everything from ideas for TikTok promotions to potential merchandising. “This is a raunchy, cinematic comedy with heart, about finding your people and your purpose,” a slideshow for the Picturestart founder’s new project, “Strays,” read. Except, in this case, there’s a twist. “It just happens to star a pack of dogs.”
It’s getting harder and harder to convince studios to take the plunge when it comes to movies that aren’t based on toys or comic books. That’s something Feig knows all too well, having previously served as the head of Lionsgate’s film division.

This Summer the multiplex has been filled with superheroes, supercars, giant robots, dolls, atom bombs, and secret agents. So, where’s “man’s best friend”? How about a sweet family-friendly flick about those angelic “fur babies”? This weekend that request is addressed…sorta’. Yes, it’s full of cute, cuddly (mostly) live-action canines, but it is far from family-friendly as you can tell by the poster with one of the pups tearing into an “R” rating insert. Yes, there are a few sweet moments, but these mutts are behaving like, well, real mutts, engaging in all manner of crude activities (hence that rating). and this cursing pack of pooches would growl at being called “fur babies” as they prefer flaunting their “street cred” as Strays.

The new comedy Strays, despite sporting an “R” rating for an abundance of sexual content and foul language, still manages to play out and deliver as a family film of sorts – albeit one you’ll more than likely want to steer your younger children away from (at least until they’re a bit older).
Strays is the story of a sweetly optimistic Border Terrier named Reggie (voiced by Will Ferrell) who is abandoned by his dirtbag owner Doug (Will Forte), but still desperately wants to find his way back to what he believes is a loving and caring home. From Lassie and Rin Tin Tin to 101 Dalmatians, Old Yeller, My Dog Skip, Homeward Bound, A Dog’s Purpose and on and on, the canine genre has been a staple of Hollywood movies for decades. I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone got the idea to make a balls-out, foul-mouthed, R-rated subversion of it all, and finally its time has come with the irresistible Strays, a film definitely not designed as a family movie or for kids — though I would bet, despite the language and nonstop dick jokes, they would love it anyway.

It’s been said, probably, that every movie would be even better with wiener jokes. I don’t think this was said by very mature individuals, nor do I think they were sober when they said it, but I’m pretty sure it’s been said at least once or twice. Probably by college students binge-watching “South Park” and huffing Cheeto dust.
In any case, those amateur philosophers are probably the target audience for “Strays,” a talking animal movie in the illustrious vein of “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” and the Owen Wilson version of “Marmaduke.” But although the majority of films where live-action animals talk with the assistance of flappy-mouthed CGI are made for children — who theoretically are enchanted by such things — “Strays” is full of profanity, jokes about sex and violence, and pervasive themes about abusive relationships.

With turns from Ferrell and Jamie Foxx, this barking stoner caper follows a neglected animal plotting revenge on a beastly owner
The cute talking pigs of the Babe films taught audiences to love real animals with CGI human-talking mouths; I myself was always agnostic, finding them lacking in both the unadorned charm of live-action animals and the complete ingenuity of animations. After years of doubting the viability of cinema releases, "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" have effectively put those fears to rest ... at least for a while. After one big blockbuster after another, August seems surprisingly light, with major players seemingly afraid to try and compete with the Barbenheimer craze. With the undeniable success of "Oppenheimer," Universal Pictures are seeking to continue its run with a film that is the polar opposite of the Cillian Murphy-led biopic: a talking dog movie.
The mere phrase "talking dog movie" is enough elicit groans. While talking-animal movies are prominent in animation, the live-action counterparts tend to be various levels of unbearable -- consider "Marmaduke," "Think Like A Dog," or the "Cats & Dogs" franchise. Pet owners spend an inordinate amount of time imagining, ascribing, even acting out the behaviors of their animals. “Strays” feels like the natural — if comically exaggerated — extension of that impulse, chronicling the personality of a border terrier named Reggie as he and three canine pals make an arduous trek back to Reggie’s owner, along with all of the attendant misunderstandings and misinterpretations about the human world around them.
Produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, written by “American Vandal” co-creator Dan Perrault and directed by “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar” director Josh Greenbaum, “Strays” balances human expectations and lost-in-translation animal experiences for a smart, suitably raunchy adventure that should resonate even if you don’t have a furry friend waiting at home for you afterward.

The first trailer for Sony’s sex comedy No Hard Feelings, hitting theaters June 23, includes star Jennifer Lawrence consoling an ex by declaring she hasn’t forgotten him: “Last night, I thought, ‘I miss that fucker.’ ” Moviegoers might share similar nostalgia, recalling a not-long-ago era when studio offerings centering on ribald jokes would regularly play theatrically — before going missing.
This summer suggests a possible changing of the tide. As audiences return to cinemas post-pandemic, studios appear to be using the next few months as a testing ground for the theatrical return of the R-rated comedy. No Hard Feelings, about an awkward teen whose parents hire Lawrence’s character to date him, will later have company from Lionsgate’s Joy Ride (July 7), Universal’s Strays (Aug. 18) and MGM’s Bottoms (Aug. 25). Such projects are akin to horror films in offering viewers the experience of watching shocking moments with a group of like-minded strangers.

Universal Pictures has pushed the release date of Jamie Foxx’s upcoming movie “Strays” by two months as he continues to recover from an emergency “medical complication.”
On Monday, Universal Pictures announced that the comedy/adventure will move its theatrical release from June 9 to August 18, replacing the untitled comedy from Please Don’t Destroy- the writing trio of “Saturday Night Live”- as the film skips theatres and sets a Peacock debut instead, as per Variety.
The official synopsis for “Strays” reads: “They say a dog is a man’s best friend, but what if the man is a total dirtbag? In that case, it might be time for some sweet revenge, doggy style.

Universal has moved “Strays” from June 9 to August 18, placing the R-rated talking-animal comedy in the same general release slot where the likes of “Good Boys” and “We’re The Millers” found fortune and glory in years prior. Now, instead of opening against “Transformers: Rise of the Beast,” itself something of a talking-animal tentpole, it’ll square off against DC’s “Blue Beetle.”
It will replace the untitled comedy from the Please Don’t Destroy comedy group. That film, starring “Saturday Night Live” vets Ben Marshall, John Higgins and Martin Herlihy, will now go straight to Peacock on Nov. 17. It further highlights the challenges in releasing big new comedies in theaters since you still might need big new stars. While most “Saturday Night Live” movies were not theatrically successful, “Wayne’s World” and “Blues Brothers” are the exception, the near-disappearance of the SNL comedian-to-movie star pipeline is one reason why we have yet...

Most movies about talking animals are sweet, family-friendly fare, but "Strays" is not most movies. This adult, R-rated comedy stars Will Ferrell as the voice of Reggie, a scruffy little terrier whose owner Doug (Will Forte) is an abusive jerk. Doug ends up abandoning Reggie in the big city, and the tenacious pup has to figure out how to survive as a stray. Thankfully, he has the help of some streetwise canines, voiced by Jamie Foxx, Isla Fisher, and Randall Park, and they help him navigate this strange new world.
The movie was produced by "The Lego Movie" creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who have a great mind for comedy and mixing up animation with live-action, and written by "American Vandal" co-scribe Dan Perrault. If anyone can pull off an R-rated adult comedy about talking dogs, it's probably this crew.

Hollywood's latest CGI movie comes with an X-rated plot about an abandoned pup looking to get back at his crappy owner, and the best part is that it features a voice cast made up of some of our favorite stars.
"Strays," billed by Universal Pictures as a "hilarious, R-rated, live-action comedy," revolves around Reggie (voiced by Will Ferrell), a "naïve, relentlessly optimistic Border Terrier" who longs to reunite with his lowlife owner, Doug (Will Forte), even after being abandoned on the mean city streets. But when Reggie's new friends and fellow dogs - Bug (Jamie Foxx), Maggie (Isla Fisher), and Hunter (Randall Park) - clue him in that his owner left him behind on purpose, they all embark on a dastardly revenge ploy to teach the human a lesson - and (spoiler alert) it involves biting off his little friend down below.

The latest entry in talking animal cinema canon is Strays, Universal’s upcoming comedy film about some dogs gone truly wild. Get a sample of what’s to come with today’s new trailer, in which Will Ferrell voices a naïve Border Terrier whose happy-go-lucky attitude contrasts his total asshole of an owner.
Although Doug (Will Forte) couldn’t care less about his four-legged friend, Reggie (Ferrell) thinks his lowlife human is the best owner in the world: “We’re playing this game called ‘Fetch ‘n’ Fuck,'” Reggie explains in the trailer. “He drops me off really far away and drives home without me. When I bring the ball back, he says, ‘fuck.’ Haha! That’s how I know I won the game!”
When a game of “Fetch ‘n’ Fuck” goes awry, Reggie makes friends in a group of stray dogs who reveal the heartbreaking truth that Doug doesn...

They say a dog is man’s best friend, but if the man behaves like a miserable dirtbag who deserves to have his privates bitten off and treated like a chew toy? I am proud to present your Wednesday dopamine in the form of Universal’s Strays teaser trailer. The following preview is a red-band look at the upcoming comedy featuring a pack of foul-mouthed doggos with a bone to pick against a human who wronged one of their own.
Per Universal‘s official press release, here is the synopsis for Strays:
When Reggie (Will Ferrell), a naïve, relentlessly optimistic Border Terrier, is abandoned on the mean city streets by his lowlife owner, Doug (Will Forte), Reggie is confident that his beloved owner would never leave him on purpose.
But once Reggie falls in with a fast-talking, foul-mouthed Boston Terrier named Bug (Jamie Foxx), a stray who loves his...

They say "Never work with children or animals" – but director Josh Greenbaum crab and seagulls in the sand for dogs. Lots of dogs. Specifically, strays who are on a mission to, er, bite a guy's dick off.
As its R-rated trailer proves, Strays isn't exactly your standard talking dog movie. And that gave Greenbaum paws upon first receiving the script. “I was going into reading that with a little trepidation,” says Greenbaum. “I felt like I knew what all the jokes were gonna be.” But it turns out he was barking up the wrong tree, because Dan Perrault's (American Vandal) script wasn't what he expected at all. “I was really pleasantly surprised to see that it was not a spoof. It really functioned on its own, even though it had a couple of moments where we pay comedic homage to the great talking dog films of our youth.”
