Dante's Inferno is being adapted into a film after Warner Bros bought a pitch based on the classic text.
The first part of the poet's Divine Comedy, originally published in 1320, has inspired a movie by screenwriter Dwain Worrell, Deadline reports.
The adaptation will apparently be framed as an "epic love story" and is produced by Gianni Nunnari's Hollywood Gang and Akiva Goldsman's Weed Road.
In the film, Dante will travel through the nine levels of hell to save the woman he loves.
The pitch was brought in to Warner Bros by Nik Mavinkurve and Chantal Nong.
Warners is said to be excited by the scale of the project and the potential for a franchise.

The seemingly-dead Hollywood remake of Akira is back on, with Marco J Ramirez hired by Warner Bros to pen a script.
One of Hollywood's on-off projects of the last five years or so has been the attempt to bring a live action remake of Akira to the big screen. The rights to a new take on the classic anime have been in the hands of Warner Bros since 2008, and more recently, Jaume Collet-Sera (Non-Stop) was set to direct. Furthermore, potential cast members included Garret Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, Ken Watanabe and Helena Bonham Carter.
However, Akira fell apart again after that, with budget issues the main problem. And whilst some preparatory work had been done on the movie, Warner Bros opted to cut its losses. At least for the time being.

“Akira” is alive and well at Warner Bros., which has hired “Daredevil” writer Marco Ramirez to adapt the popular Japanese manga, an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap. Leonardo DiCaprio and his Appian Way banner are producing with Andrew Lazar (“American Sniper”) and his company Mad Chance. Warner Bros. executives Drew Crevello and Nik Mavinkurve will oversee the reconfigured project for the studio. Jaume Collet-Serra was set to direct “Akira” back in 2012 but Warner Bros. pulled the plug on the project due to issues surrounding the budget, script and casting. At the time, the studio had been in discussions with Garrett Hedlund,...

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Warner Bros. has snapped up the rights to Scott Cawthon’s creepy horror series Five Nights at Freddy’s, with Roy Lee, David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith on board to help shepherd the idiosyncratic project to the silver screen.
In a separate statement, Grahame-Smith and Cawthon touched upon the video game franchise’s innate cinematic tendencies, and how Five Nights at Freddy’s will introduce moviegoers to a very particular slice of terror.
“We’re looking forward to working with Scott to make an insane, terrifying and weirdly adorable movie,” said Grahame-Smith.
Cawthon went on to say, “the story really lends itself to being a movie and it taps into a largely unexplored niche of horror that a lot of people will be able to relate to.”

Exclusive: Warner Bros and Gulfstream Pictures are set to develop and co-finance Antarctica, with Michael Werwie penning the script. The storyline is being kept under wraps, but the action-adventure pic takes place amid the harsh climate and terrain of the world’s most remote continent. Gulfstream partners Mike Karz and Bill Bindley are producing, with Chantal Nong and Nik Mavinkurve overseeing for Warners. No director or cast is set.
The film was developed internally at Gulfstream. “Antarctica was a story idea that had literally been ‘on the shelf,’ and Michael developed a take for us that will make for a riveting action thriller,” Bindley said.
Werwie wrote Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, which earned him a 2012 Academy Nicholl Fellowship and made the Black List that year. He is repped by UTA and Evolution Entertainment Partners. He also adapted the Long Island serial killer tale Lost Girls: An Unsolved American Mystery...

Exclusive: Warner Bros has closed a deal to remake Who Am I, the latest film by German-based helmer Baran “Bo” Odar, who made his directorial debut on The Silence. Who Am I, which premiered in Toronto, is a visual thriller that stars Tom Schilling as a young man who gets pulled into the world of an Anonymous-like hacking group. Pic starts with him telling his story to Europol investigator after he and his cohorts perpetrated a crime spree that pissed off the Russian mob, which butchered up three of the hackers in a hotel room.
The film is playing gangbusters in Germany, where in its fourth week it has earned the equivalent of $11 million on a budget of $4 million euros. It has been doing business there that is comparable to Gone Girl and Dracula Untold.
Kevin McCormick will produce the remake through his Langley Park banner. WB’s Jesse Ehrman and Nik Mavinkurve will oversee.

Exclusive: Warner Bros has set Dax Shepard to write, direct and star in a screen version of CHiPS, that TV series that ran from 1977-83 and featured two officers who patrolled the highways of California armed with motorcycles and the tightest khaki cop uniforms in television history. Shepard will play Officer Jon Baker (played in the original by Larry Wilcox), while Michael Pena is attached to play Frank “Ponch” Poncherello, the role Erik Estrada originated. Rick Rosner created the NBC series.
This is the most serious Warner Bros has been in turning CHiPS into a film. The studio tried it years ago, after That ’70s Show star Wilmer Valderrama showed up in the office of exec Greg Silverman (who’s now running production at the studio). Dressed in the signature tight-fitting uniform, Valderrama merely said, “Funny, right?” — and he walked out with a deal and an intention to play Ponch.
