NBC's house-cleaning at its comedy division continues: First-year series "Go On" has been canceled.
As things stand now, only one of the 11 comedies NBC aired this season, "Parks and Recreation," will return in 2013-14. The fates of "Community" and "Go On's" Tuesday companion "The New Normal" have yet to be decided.
"Go On" starred Matthew Perry as Ryan King, a radio host who enters grief therapy after his wife dies and comes to rely on the assorted oddballs in the group and its well-meaning but underqualified leader, Lauren (Laura Benanti). Julie White, John Cho, Tyler James Williams, Suzy Nakamura and Brett Gelman also starred.

The now-canceled "Go On" centered on Ryan King (Matthew Perry), a sportscaster dealing with the loss of his wife, with the help of a grief support group.

Go On concluded its first season Thursday night with a solid episode that brought a lot of closure to the story of Ryan King (Matthew Perry), the radio sportscaster whose journey through grief we’ve been following all season.
The episode was everything a fan of the show could have wanted — a funny but poignant half-hour that found Ryan’s oddball support group banding around him as he struggled to make an important step on the ladder of healing. Specifically, Ryan had to decide how to spread his wife’s ashes, and when he finally did, it prompted his fellow...

The season finale of "Go On" is in the books, and the show's prospects for next season are up in the air. After a strong fall run airing after "The Voice," the show's ratings dropped off sharply without the lead-in, putting its prospects for a second season very much in question (although Zap2it readers would like it to return).
So would this Zap2it writer. Early in the season, I wrote about how well "Go On" was coming together, and it's continued to improve as the season has gone on. The show has remained true to the idea that Ryan King (Matthew Perry) and the other members of his therapy group are all bent or broken in some way. Its supporting characters have continued to grow, and it hasn't rushed to put Ryan and group leader Lauren (Laura Benanti) together.
Could the show head that direction with Lauren and Ryan in the future?...

When Go On announced its plan to engage Anne and Ryan in a love triangle with Courteney Cox, we were half jubilation and half trepidation. Jubilation because we can't get enough of Julie White's grieving lesbian character. Trepidation because how could the show's writers possibly treat her fairly when pitting her against one of TV's most beloved sitcom couples? But, like everything else Go On has done with Anne this season, the bi-curious Chandler/Monica reunion was hilarious and poignant and truly refreshing.
The episode kicked off with Anne offering to be Ryan King's wingman and introduce him to Talia, a grieving widow she met at the cemetery when she was visiting her wife's grave. They accidentally get themselves into a three-person dinner date situation — "Dammit, King, what is this, junior high? Am I going to have to unhook her bra for you too?...

One of the best things happening on TV this season is also one of the least watched things happening on TV this season: NBC's Go On is doing everything right with its lesbian character. The emotional anchor of the freshman comedy is, of course, Matthew Perry's Ryan King, a sports radio host who begins attending a grief support group after the death of his wife. But the series has done a remarkable job juxtaposing his loss and recovery with Julie White's lesbian character Anne. The last few weeks have seen Ryan engaging in his first relationship since his wife passed away, and true to form, Anne also got a love interest this week.
The meet-cute was perfect, and so very Anne.

It's evaluation time for the guys and gals on NBC's Go On. How is therapy group leader Lauren (Laura Benanti) doing? After several weeks off, the rookie comedy returns Feb. 19 to ask just that question. "I'm a custodian of your emotional well-being!" Lauren tells the group as she passes out the forms, which Ryan throws away immediately. "You put your life in my hands. Your

Matthew Perry will welcome one of his former co-stars to his new series "Go On" later this season.
No, there's not a "Friends" reunion in the offing. Bradley Whitford, who starred with Perry in "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip," will guest on an episode airing after the new year.
"Working with Bradley Whitford again is so much fun," Perry tweeted Wednesday (Dec. 19). "I mean, I wish we weren't in a hot tub together, but you can't ask for everything."
There's no word yet on the character Whitford will be playing -- or if, in fact, he and Perry's Ryan King do, in fact, end up in a hot tub.

Since Mondays are just the worst, we here at Zap2it have decided to give your week a much-needed wake-up call with 10 TV teasers -- just to remind you that when the work day is over, your DVR waits to welcome you home.
This week, our Monday Kickstart includes scoop on some new ladies in the "Teen Wolf" mix, a "Parenthood" flirtation, and a major new player in the "Hart of Dixie" medical community.
"Teen Wolf": More mysterious characters continue to descend on Beacon Hills. Producers are currently casting the recurring Cora, a tough 17-year-old who has been on her own longer than any kid should. She's got some secret ties to the Beacon Hills werewolves. (Who doesn't?) In the second episode, we also meet Heather, a friend of his who is celebrating her birthday. It's not a huge role, so she's probably not a significant love interest, but...

There's nothing that quite helps someone get their mind off their problems like having a lot of work to do. In a first look at next week's episode of "Go On," Ryan King (Matthew Perry) tries to help his fellow grief support group member Owen (Tyler James Williams) do just that by getting him a job as an intern at K-bal.
In the clip, we see Ryan taking Owen under his wing and showing him the studio. There they meet this week's celebrity guest star, Miami Heat basketball player Chris Bosh, who makes Owen so nervous he can barely speak. And there we thought Ryan was supposed to be the star!
It remains to be seen if Ryan lets Owen keep the gig after that little incident. Hopefully he gives him a little leeway, as it's not every day that one meets a sports superstar. Well, unless you're Ryan King.

Matthew Perry is of course not new to comedy by any means. The actor played Chandler Bing on the fan favorite Friends for 10 years and has since moved on to other lead roles in Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Mr. Sunshine and his most current hit Go On on NBC. Playing Ryan King, a man who heads to therapy after losing his wife (trust us, it’s a comedy), Perry stars alongside John Cho, who just so happens to be his ultimate fan. Cho hasn't been shy on relaying that message to Perry either. In a recent conference call, Perry replied to the, err, compliment.
"I love working with John. You know, we were very lucky to get him. I -we - he had been hired in the pilot as a guest star and then we asked him to be a regular and we were very fortunate that he said yes,...

As many Parenthood fans know, Lauren Graham will be stopping by another NBC show this season, leaving Mark and Hank behind. But don't worry—it'll only be for a bit! It recently was announced that the Gilmore Girls alum would be catching up with old friend Matthew Perry on his new comedy hit Go On. The series just got a full-season pickup, and it's clear that Perry couldn't be happier for the new storyline that will begin Nov. 20. During a recent conference call, Perry discussed Graham's role and why it may shift what audiences have been so used to seeing from his character Ryan King.
"My friend Lauren Graham agreed to come on the show, which we were really excited about and she plays a character named Amy who was an old college buddy of mine," he reveals. "There was some sparks back in college, but then my character got married.

David Beckham has reportedly agreed to appear in NBC sitcom Go On. Matthew Perry - who plays the lead role of sports DJ Ryan King in the show - has revealed that the Los Angeles Galaxy footballer will portray himself in a cameo role. "We've talked to David Beckham and he said that he would do it, so that was very exciting," Perry is quoted as saying in The Sun. Beckham was linked with a cameo role on the show earlier this year. Perry added that ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky may appear, while he personally wants (more)...

He's the quintessential "guy next door" who has made a very lucrative living making America laugh. He's Matthew Perry, the former Friends (TV) star who, for ten years, Bing'd his way into our living room each week with his self-effacing humor and sharp wit while sipping gourmet coffee and communing with one of the most famous ensemble casts in television history. With the end of Friends (TV), Matthew continued to find work in both film and television, After a hit-and-miss with last season's Mr. Sunshine (a show Perry co-created, co-wrote, and co-produced), the forty-three year old actor landed two roles on the same day - a recurring gig as the sociopathic Chicago lawyer Mike Kresteva on CBS' The Good Wife (TV) and the lead in NBC's new comedy-drama sitcom Go On (TV). In a recent conference call with journalists, Matthew sat down to discuss the new show, and how his...

The pilot of "Go On" had maybe the toughest premise to sell of any comedy this season: Yes, it had a big star in Matthew Perry, but he's playing a man whose wife had died a month earlier and was now entering grief counseling.
There was potential there, along with a very talented supporting cast, but also a lot of possible pitfalls. There was no central relationship on which to hang the show, and it would have to walk a narrow line between its humor and the more somber elements suggested by its premise.
Five episodes in, though, "Go On" is acquitting itself quite well.

It has a slightly larger body of work on which to judge it than shows that premiered later in September, but it's becoming more assured week by week and, so far anyway, is living up to its potential. Here's...

Go On was one of the first three new shows to earn a full-season pickup this fall, and its success comes as big of a surprise to the cast and crew as it may anyone else.
"Nobody knew whether it was going to work," Matthew Perry told reporters on a conference call. "Nobody knew, really, whether people were going to laugh at these sad situations."

"Go On" has thus far played its lead character's grieving for his late wife pretty honestly. TV comedy convention would dictate that Ryan King (Matthew Perry) fall into a will they/won't they scenario rather quickly, but five episodes in he has yet to as much as look longingly at another woman.
But the show is called "Go On," so eventually Ryan will try to put himself out there again -- with an assist from Lauren Graham.
News that the "Parenthood" star would guest on "Go On" broke late last month, and in a call with reporters Monday (Oct. 8) Perry elaborated on the role Graham -- a long-time friend of his in real life -- will be playing.

Watch out, TV stars: The Olympians are taking over! Following in the footsteps of Ryan Lochte, Gabby Douglas and McKayla Maroney, who have all booked guest spots on popular shows, we've exclusively learned that Olympic gold medalist Misty May-Treanor is set to make a guest appearance on Matthew Perry's new hit show Go On. Misty will play herself on the NBC comedy, which makes sense considering Perry's character Ryan King is a well-known sportscaster. In the episode, tentatively set to air in late November or early December, the beach volleyball star invites Ryan to play in a game of—you guessed it—beach volleyball with her and her friends. This should end well for him! Go On...

If anybody deserves to treat himself to an extra cookie, it's Go On's Ryan King (Matthew Perry). After all, the dude's wife recently died in a car accident. But on the Oct. 9 episode of the just-picked-up-for-a-full-season NBC comedy, Ryan's support group grows concerned that the dryly funny sportscaster has entered the dreaded stage of grief known as compulsive eating. As the exclusive clip below shows, it's a stage each oddball member of the group has experienced, though Ryan refuses to believe it applies to him. "I've had many hard times," reports resident blind man George (Bill Cobbs), seeing right through Ryan's denials, "and the good people at Pop-Tarts have a variety for...

Ryan King's recovery from the death of his wife may hit a rough patch in Tuesday's (Oct. 2) episode of "Go On." Having visions of your late spouse qualifies as rough, right?
As Zap2it first reported in August, Christine Woods ("Perfect Couples") is playing Ryan's (Matthew Perry) wife, Janie, and Tuesday's episode will offer our first look at her (not counting a couple photos in Ryan's grief collage last week). As you can see in the exclusive clip above, Ryan is a little weirded out to have her back in his life.
"Go On" creator Scott Silveri says he wanted viewers to actually see Janie so they could have a better sense of who she was and why Ryan misses her. It will also (although not so much in this scene) give Ryan a chance to act romantic.

An old friend of Matthew Perry will guest on his new show "Go On" later this season.
No, not that kind of "Friend." "Parenthood" star Lauren Graham, a real-life pal of Perry's, will appear in an upcoming episode, EW reports.
Graham and Perry dated briefly about a decade ago and have remained friends ever since. She also guested (as herself) on a couple of episodes of Perry's series "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" in 2006.

Two NBC worlds are set to collide.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Lauren Graham will pay a visit to Go On in the near future, guest-starring on long-time friend Matthew Perry's new sitcom as a former co-worker of the Ryan King.
Go On premiered September 11 and focuses on Perry as a sports talk radio host and a member of a "life change" support group. It has enjoyed strong ratings out of the gate for NBC.
Graham, meanwhile, stars on the perennially underrated and under-appreciated Parenthood. Seriously, it's really, really good.

Here’s an interesting question: Is Go On the lesbian show we’ve been waiting for? Now, before you give me the raised eyebrow of lesbian disapproval, hear me out. I fully realize the freshman NBC series is actually The Chandler Bing Does Sports Radio Show. Clearly, this is not a lesbian show. But there’s an interesting case to be made that its lesbian character of Ann is one of the best new additions to the Lgbt pantheon of characters.

When we first meet her she seems to be your standard issue “angry lesbian in a blazer.” Her partner died and she is, well, pissed. But now, four episodes in, the series has managed to...

NHL star Jeremy Roenick is no match for Matthew Perry in next week’s episode of Go On.
Something amiss about that statement? You bet. But not if you ask Ryan King (Perry).
In next week’s episode of this solid performing comedy, Steven (John Cho) arranges a spirit-lifting game of hockey for “severely delusional beast” Ryan and enlists Roenick’s help in keeping the scheme a secret from the mourning radio host. Roenick doesn’t think the fix will go unnoticed, but as Steven notes, “It’s part of the wonder that is Ryan. He’s not looking for...

When I saw the Go On premiere last month during the Olympics, I pretty much loved it. The show had a great leading man in Matthew Perry and a great bunch of misfits around him. It had heart and laughs, and Go On wasn't too broad in its humor or too sappy in its emotional moments. I really, really enjoyed it, which is why it saddens me that last night's second episode, "He Got Game, She Got Cats," was such a dip in quality. Most TV show's second episodes are never truly great, but what I saw from Go On last night has me a little worried about its longevity as a funny, heartfelt sitcom.
Even though I do not have much concern about the way Go On handles its emotional moments, the show did raise some red flags for me last night come on the comedy side of things.

Matthew Perry's back...and he's bringing some friends along. No, not those Friends. We're talking about the friends his character, sportscaster Ryan King, makes in his therapy group in NBC's new comedy, Go On. Yeah, having a man attend therapy to cope with the loss of his wife seem like an odd premise for a comedy, but Go On, with its Community-esque ragtag group, worked for us. But who cares what we think? We want to hear from you—would you like to see Go On, well, go on? Let's found out! Go On's central therapy group, led by Lauren (Laura Benanti) is inhabited by some pretty funny characters, whose less-than-funny backstories were told in a pretty genius way: through a...

The new NBC series "Go On," starring Matthew Perry as sportscaster Ryan King, gives costume designer Nancy Gould a main character with many layers that she helps reveal through the clothes she selects.
"There is a lot of room for distinction between the sports world and therapy world," Gould tells Zap2it. "[Ryan] is confident and smart and successful on this radio show, so he dresses well in sports coats, suits and dress shirts by Hugo Boss, John Varvatos and Paul Smith. In his casual life, he wears a lot of Vince and Theory. He dresses up at work because he is on camera all the time. Sometime a tie when he's doing the show and jeans underneath since you wouldn't see them anyway."

Audiences want something very specific from Matthew Perry: They want "Friends." Not something "Friends"-like, they want that actual show, and are pretty satisfied catching Perry in the countless reruns that air on a constant loop all the time. They just want him to be Chandler Bing and married to Monica and making could-i-be-any-more-sarcastic comments until the end of time.
It's just not a realistic expectation. Shows get canceled and we have to move on. Such are the perils of falling in love with six BFFs who don't really exist.
Perry's challenge, since then, has been to find a show that can highlight his talents the way that "Friends" did. Perry is certainly not a one-trick pony; he's a comedic master and his work on shows like "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" and even ABC's short-lived "Mr. Sunshine" proves that he's not just Chandler Bing.
