Beneath the Darkness was released this week on Blu-ray and DVD, and I had the chance to briefly chat with director Martin Guigui. While usually known for directing comedy films, he jumped into horror territory with Dennis Quaid playing the role of a mortician with something to hide.
During our talk, Martin discusses how Dennis Quaid’s involvement and improvisition changed the final product and the the chances of us seeing a sequel. We also have the trailer, photos, and a number of clips for you to check out.
Thank you for taking the time to talk with Daily Dead. It seems to be inspired by movies like Rear Window or Phantasm and I was curious about how the project came together.

A group of high school students witness strange goings on at the home of Vaughn Ely, the town mortician. They spot what they presume to be a ghost in the window of his home, observe suspicious and erratic behavior, and develop a general sense of distrust for the man. Because they lack the ability and desire to mind their own business, the teens devise a plan to sneak in to Ely’s home and conduct an investigation in to the strange goings on. Not taking kindly to the invasion of privacy, Ely kills one of the teens, in cold blood. In spite of evidence to the contrary, the authorities rule the killing to be self defense. Not being willing to leave well enough alone, the nosy youngsters become caught up in a fight for their lives against Vaughn Ely, the maniac mortician.

Having interviewed Dennis Quaid a couple of times, I've found him to be pretty nice guy, as well as a decent actor. But although he's spent some time exploring our favorite genre in recent years with thrillers like Pandorum and Legion, like a lot of folks, I wish those thrillers were just a wee bit better. Will Quaid's next project be more deserving of his talent? See for yourself when you check out a clip of Quaid going full psycho in Beneath the Darkness after the jump. Beneath the Darkness is due on Blu-ray and DVD on February 28th. Here's the synopsis... Small town mortician Ely makes a special visit to see his long-dead wife! Beneath the Darkness stars Dennis Quaid as a crazed mortician dancing with corpses in Smithville, Texas. Released theatrically January 6th, this film would be considered a thriller, but there is very little excitement to be found here. Quaid outclasses the other cast members in acting. However, the script from the now deceased Bruce Wilkinson does not contain enough tension to keep one film fan's interest.
Quaid plays Ely, a man with strange visions. His deceased wife becomes live again with a little self-delusion. While dancing in the windows with her corpse, a group of friends decide to find out what is really going on. Their break and enter does not go well. One youth is killed, the others are threatened and soon Quaid is delivering crazy one-liners like: "stairs can be very dangerous." Meanwhile,...

Beneath the Darkness
Directed by Martin Guigui
Screenplay by Bruce Wilkinson
2011, USA
In the post-Scream era, it should be impossible to make a thriller or horror film that does not comment on the conventions of the genre. The only proof that it is possible is Beneath the Darkness, a painfully earnest thriller that falls into every bad-movie trap that a film of this sort could fall into. It’s the very sort of movie that the characters in Scream would laugh at.
Martin Guigui’s film opens with small-town Texas mortician Vaughn Eli (Dennis Quaid) killing a man. That scene, plus the subsequent story element that protagonist Travis (Tony Oller) once saw his sister’s ghost, might lead one to expect a thriller with a touch of the supernatural. Travis is studying Macbeth and “The Tell-Tale Heart,” which only reinforces that mood.
Instead the film delivers some turgid teen drama.

The bad guys get all the good lines while the heroes are so goody-two-shoes that their personalities can seem less believable that those of the rotters. Albert Brooks (“I’ll have a mushroom omelette, very ltitle butter”) got his chance in the fast-paced film “Drive,” succeeding beyond expectations, winning guild awards from New York to L.A. There is a new trailer for horror film Beneath the Darkness, from director Martin Guigui (Born to Ride). In the clip, Dennis Quaid (Legion) plays Ely, a mortician who has a habit of burying both live and dead people. Obviously mentally deranged, Ely turns one small community into a horrifying nightmare, full of hidden bodies. Also, watch actor Quaid quip some great one-liners such as "careful," "stairs can be very dangerous," and the classic: "the jokes on you!" All of these great horror elements can be found in this first trailer for Beneath the Darkness below!
The synopsis for Beneath the Darkness is here:

Release Date: 2011.
Director: Martin Guigui.

Another indie thriller is on the way!
This time we’re here to talk about Martin Guigui‘s Beneath the Darkness, and to report that Dennis Quaid has signed on to star in the movie that already includes Aimee Teegarden, Tony Oller and Stephen Lunsford.
Beneath the Darkness is set in Texas, where it’s currently shooting, and focuses on Tony Oller’s character, Travis, a teenager who tries to dig up the dirt on the house inhabited by Quaid’s character, a well-respected man in the community, following the death of Travis’ best friend.
So, as you see, Quaid is back, and this time as a “mysterious mortician” and we hope you like that idea…
While we’re still here let us remind you that Quaid recently completed filming Soul Surfer and Paramount’s remake of the 1984 musical drama Footloose.

Cutie actress Aimee Teegarden (below) may be all done and dusted on Wes Craven's 'Scream 4' project but she's getting straight back into more horror and thrills with the Martin Guigui helmed 'Beneath the Darkness'. Currently shooting in Texas, the Bruce Wilkinson penned horror has bought on board actor Dennis Quaid ('Pandorum', 'Frequency', 'Jaws 3-D') to fill a role. He'll be joined by fellow cast members Tony Oller, Stephen Lunsford, Devon Werkheiser, Brett Cullen, Conrad Gonzales, Wilbur Penn, Amber Bartlett, Sydney Barrosse, Dahlia Waingort and Gabriel Folse....
