Range Media Partners on Tuesday announced its formation of a music publishing division headed up by industry vet Casey Robison.
Robison is just the latest to come aboard at the ever-expanding management and production company, which recently tapped William Lowery and Shawn McSpadden to help broaden the reach of label Range Music from Nashville.
He comes to Range from Hipgnosis Songs Group, where he served as Executive Vice President, A&r. Robison’s time there followed his work to cement 2020 Hipgnosis’ acquisition of Big Deal Music Group, the indie music publisher where he served as Co-President and Partner, building and overseeing the pop division, while solidifying joint ventures with Ricky Reed’s Nice Life Music and Julian Bunetta & John Ryan’s Big Family Music.

As the Writers Guild of America continues to ramp up its first strike in over 15 years, no one in the music business has been looking on with more intrigue — and maybe a hint of envy — than songwriters. The cadre of behind-the-scenes hitmakers have themselves been looking for ways to push reforms of their own for years, albeit to much less media coverage than what the WGA saw this week.
“Many of those WGA writers have been my friends for years. I think what they’re doing is amazing and inspiring,...

As an elite pop songwriter, Emily Warren breathes rarified air — she’s co-written several songs with more than a billion streams each on Spotify alone, including Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now” and “New Rules” and the Chainsmokers’ “Don’t Let Me Down.” But Warren still found herself in an uncomfortable situation last year: A high-powered singer was demanding a “crazy” fraction of publishing — the income that writers earn from creating the lyrics and melodies for songs — in exchange for recording a tune penned by Warren, even though that...

Gwen Stefani has dropped her new song “Slow Clap,” the singer’s first single of 2021 and follow-up to her throwback track “Let Me Reintroduce Myself.”
Like that previous single, “Slow Clap” once again sees the singer returning to the reggae and ska roots of early No Doubt. Lyrically, Stefani addresses her resilience through personal and professional turmoils.
“Been the champion, rang the bell/Rocked the bottom, been through hell/Climbed the mountain, now I’m well/I just feel like coming back for the belt,” Stefani sings on the track.

Jagged Little Pill, Moulin Rouge!, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, Grand Horizons, Mary-Louise Parker and Jonathan Groff are among this year’s Outer Critics Circle Awards recipients, a collection of Broadway and Off Broadway recipients that make up the organization’s first-ever slate of multiple honorees.
With the Tony Awards remaining a mere possibility this year, the 70th Annual Outer Critics Circle Awards took an unusual approach to an unusual, pandemic-shortened theater season: In lieu of selecting traditional nominees with one winner from each category, the Occ named five honorees in each of its technical categories and up to six honorees in acting categories. Four artists received the annual John Gassner Award this season, commemorating works by new American playwrights.

Ricky Reed, a producer behind four songs on Lizzo’s Grammy-winning Cuz I Love You album — six, if you’re looking at the deluxe version, which includes megahit “Truth Hurts” — is imploring musicians, songwriters, producers, artists, and executives to press pause on songwriting sessions, meetings and shows. And “no going to packed bars,” Reed added in his Medium post this week. “No eating at restaurants. No brunch. (In South Korea one person attended church and a buffet lunch and was responsible for infecting 1,000 people! Again, no brunch!).”

When Tony-winning (and Emmy and Grammy-winning) Broadway musical director Alex Lacamoire (Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen) happened to have a business trip to London scheduled recently, he saw a unique opportunity at hand, and made a call to Abbey Road Studios. Lacamoire had previously made multiple viral videos where he would play through entire albums (Billy Joel’s The Stranger, for one) on piano in under a minute, and the idea of speeding through Abbey Road at Abbey Road was too tempting to resist. Two accomplished friends, Hamilton director Thomas Kail...

Film and theater Producer Marc Platt and wife Julie have made a $1 million gift to McC Theater, one of Off Broadway’s leading not-for-profit companies, for the development and production of new musicals, McC announced today.
Named for Marc Platt’s late, theater-loving uncle, The Gary Platt Musical Initiative will begin its intended mission immediately for the 2019-20 season. The initiative will support new musicals over the course of five programming seasons.
“Beyond being my beloved uncle, Gary introduced generations of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews to the world of musical theatre,” said Marc Platt, speaking on behalf of himself, his wife and their family (the couple’s sons include actors Ben Platt and Jonah Platt). “He had a remarkable gift for encouraging people to embrace their unique talents and pursue their dreams. The Interscope record label’s interest in film/music crossover isn’t exactly a secret: With hit companion albums for “A Star Is Born,” “Black Panther” and “La La Land,” they’ve seemed to own the soundtrack space at times in recent years. And the company hasn’t completely made a secret of its desire to move into film production. But with three films premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival this weekend, they’re ready to go on record as officially being in the movie business with the launch of Interscope Films.
Or re-launch, in a manner of thinking. If “Interscope Films” rings a bell of any kind, it may be because you know your history. Before there was a music company by that name, Ted Fields started Interscope Communications (aka Interscope Pictures) in 1982, before it morphed into the music behemoth we know today in 1990 and the filmmaking component eventually dropped away.

Netflix unveiled its first unscripted music show today. “Westside,” which premieres globally on Nov. 9, is a genre-defining eight-episode series that follows the lives, loves and assorted struggles of nine aspiring artists (including former “American Idol” finalist Pia Toscano) as they pursue ever-elusive success in the modern-day music industry. Eschewing the standard competition-style format, this innovative approach intersperses raw docu-series footage with slick music videos and 20 original songs that emphasize the show’s themes and character story arcs.
The production quality of the series’ cinema-verite approach, along with a gritty, unfiltered look at the reality of struggle for success in Hollywood, makes “Westside” the polar opposite of the sanitized fantasy-like “Cinderella” story approach of a show like “American Idol.”
“Westside” also features original music written by some of today’s top hitmakers, among them Diane Warren, Philip Lawrence, Ryan Tedder, Shane McAnally, Jason “Poo Bear” Boyd, Pat Monahan, Johan Carlsson, Ross Golan,...

The “Music Army,” as proponents of the Music Modernization Act including Sona (Songwriters of North America) and “The Writer Is…” podcast host Ross Golan call their movement to update and improve royalty payments to songwriters, artists and creatives in the digital era, is waging a sky campaign in Oregon. On Monday, Aug. 27, billboards began popping up in Portland and Salem addressed to democratic Senator Ron Wyden and asking “Senator Wyden: Why do you hate music?”
At issue for the advocacy groups, who’ve helped shepherd the Mma through the House of Representatives and long overdue reforms of archaic, complicated and imbalanced procedures for songwriters and music rights holders. It next faces a full Senate vote, which is where Wyden factors.
The bill combines three separate pieces of legislation:
– The Music Modernization Act of 2018, S.2334, introduced by Senator Orrin Hatch (R-ut) and Senator Lamar Alexander (R-tn) in January, which updates licensing...

Last month, Halsey and Khalid released a new song, “Eastside,” with a silent partner: producer and songwriter Benny Blanco, who’s credited as a third lead artist on the single (and co-stars in its video) even though he doesn’t audibly sing on it. For Blanco, who’s been crafting pop smashes at a steady clip since 2008 for Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran, Britney Spears and more, a hit single is nothing new. The only difference this time is his name in lights up front.

Following tension over the Music Modernization Act, performance rights organization Sesac and songwriter groups have reached a compromise that will allow for the legislation’s passage.
On August 2, the performing rights organization in a joint press release with Nashville Songwriters Association International, the National Music Publishers Association, and Songwriters Of North America, stated: “At the encouragement of Senators closely involved in this legislation, all parties came together to agree on outstanding items related to the Mma including the reform of the Section 115 compulsory license and other important related matters. We share a collective responsibility to help ensure that the Mma benefits all stakeholders in the industry and look forward to the Senate’s consideration of the bill.”
Before Sesac’s July 17 proposal, it had been smooth sailing for the Mma, which in June was approved unanimously by the Senate Judiciary Committee following its passage, also by unanimous vote, in the House of Representatives in May.
