Dan Stevens is having the time of his life as Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has become a big hit for Warner Bros and Legendary. His latest release Abigail has also received great reviews from critics and audiences, with many praising his performance. His versatility in switching from a delightfully charming role to an intense individual in the two films is impressive, to say the least.

Al Pacino and Dan Stevens are set to team up as priests in the forthcoming exorcism horror ‘The Ritual’.
Ashley Greene and Abigail Cowen will also join Pacino and Stevens on the cast list.
Based on a true story, the movie will follow two priests — one questioning his faith (Stevens) and one reckoning with a troubled past (Pacino) — who must put aside their differences to save a possessed young woman through a difficult and dangerous series of exorcisms.
Also in news – Lakeith Stanfield eyed for neo-noir game adaptation ‘El Paso, Elsewhere’
The film provides an accurate portrayal of Emma Schmidt, an American woman who was believed to be possessed by demonic spirits, which led to several harrowing exorcisms. This case is considered to be the most extensively documented exorcism in American history.
David Midell will direct from a script he co-wrote alongside Enrico Natale. Andrew Stevens, Mitchell Welch and Natale will produce.

There really needs to be some regulation on calling your horror movie The Ritual, even it has a ritual or rituals in it. Seriously, go to the IMDb and see how many titles come up with you type it in (we'll wait — it could be a while)… That, however, isn't stopping director David Midell, who has Al Pacino and Dan Stevens ready to play priests in a new based-on-truth tale that uses that name.
Midell wrote the script with creative partner Enrico Natale and has taken inspiration from a true story. It'll follow a pair of priests, with Stevens' questioning his faith and Pacino's trying to overcome a troubled past as they shove their differences aside to try to help a young woman.
Emma Schmidt's demonic possession demanded a series of dangerous and harrowing exorcism, and her case is still the most thoroughly documented example of the practice in American history.

Simply depicting the events that led to the death of a former marine leaves audiences to draw their own parallels with the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor
The first word that would pop into your brain to describe this drama, based on actual events, is “timely”. But, tragically, that means little given the regularity with which people die at the hands of US police, either by accident or design. The killing at the centre of director David Midell’s almost unbearably tense film happened in White Plains, NY, in 2011. However, as there are only audio recordings, forensic reports and witness statements to document what happened, Chamberlain’s death didn’t capture the public imagination in the same way that George Floyd’s or Breonna Taylor’s did in 2020, for example.
Viewers might care to discuss the difference between such cases’ circumstances and the times in which they happened,...

I had just moved from Germany to Langley, Virginia, when the case of Kenneth Chamberlain became national news. I remembered I was upset by the events leading up to his death at the hands of the Police. 2021 has opened the eyes of many Americans to Police brutality and excessive use of force in cases that don’t call for it. However, when it came time to review writer/director David Midell’s film The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain, there was apprehension because I didn’t want to put myself in that traumatized state, having to relive the events of Chamberlain’s death. “Who is this movie for?” is a question that looped through my mind while watching. While I couldn’t make up my mind regarding that question, I can say that Frankie Faison illuminates an otherwise empty, hollow film.

Boiling Point (Philip Barantini)
More often than not, one-take films struggle to justify their gimmick. Whether shot in one go or utilizing an intensive editing process to appear like so, the technique almost always threatens to overshadow whatever story is at the center rather than emphasizing it. Used correctly, it can prove immersive in the exact same way as a theatrical production—breaking down barriers between performer and audience, who can see their work unfold in real-time. Unfortunately, the impracticality of telling a story this way is usually highlighted via several scenes of actors slowly walking between filming locations. – Alistair R. (full review)

In “The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain,” everything that might (hope against hope) go right doesn’t. Everything that could go wrong does, prompted by the disregard, bias or outright bigotry that has been at work when police officers encounter people of color or people with mental illness. Chamberlain was Black and lived with bipolar disorder.
Writer-director David Midell and actor Frankie Faison have delivered a taut, emotionally excruciating drama based on the police shooting of Kenneth Chamberlain Sr. in White Plains, N.Y., in the early morning hours of Nov. 19, 2011. “Hours” is something of an overstatement: The 83-minute movie approximates the real-time duration of the unfolding tragedy, which began around 5:22 a.m. and ended about an hour and a half after police arrived at the veteran’s apartment. The film has played theatrically and is receiving awards attention, including a Gotham Award nomination for Faison for outstanding lead performance.

I’m not sure there’s a more textbook example of police overreach and excessive force than the one depicted in David Midell’s The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain. The number of checkpoints that had to be missed, ignored, or willfully flaunted for the tragedy that ensures to occur is too high to count. In a perfect world (one the “defund the police” movement strives to create), officers wouldn’t have been dispatched to Kenneth Chamberlain Sr.’s (Frankie Faison) in the first place. He was a seventy-year-old Black Marine veteran with mental health flags. Any wellness check should have been conducted by (or had the participation of) a healthcare professional, social worker, or counselor. Welcome to America. Why spend money saving lives when you can overwork an under-educated, already-present police force instead?

Exclusive: Following the Gravitas Ventures day and date theatrical release, HBO Max has picked up exclusive streaming rights to the award-winning, critically-acclaimed film The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain. The movie will stream on Nov. 19, the ten-year anniversary of Kenneth Chamberlain, Sr.’s Death.
The David Midell directed movie is based on the true events of an elderly African American veteran with bipolar disorder who is killed by the White Plains, NY police during a welfare check after his medical alert is accidentally activated. Through a series of unfortunate circumstances and the overly aggressive policing tactics that make the news on an all-too-frequent basis, the life of Kenneth Chamberlain Sr. ended at the hands of those who were sworn to “protect and serve.”

Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter moves from Venice into 579 theaters this weekend — the first in a welcome stream of specialty films from the Lido, Telluride and Toronto that could, perhaps maybe, buck up the struggling arthouse market this fall. The film is 90% certified fresh and hails from Focus Features, which presented one of the rare specialty hits of recent months, Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain.
That film came out in mid-July before the Delta Variant reached full sweep. It was released on nearly double the number of screens.
The Card Counter stars Oscar Isaac, Tiffany Haddish and Tye Sheridan. William Tell (Isaac) a military interrogator haunted by his past just wants to play cards. But his spartan existence on the casino trail is shattered when he’s approached by Cirk (Sheridan), a vulnerable, angry young man seeking help to get revenge on a military colonel (Willem Dafoe). "Help me! I need help!" Gravitas Ventures has unveiled an early teaser trailer for a film titled The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain, telling the real story of the killing of Kenneth Chamberlain Sr. This premiered at both the Oxford Film Festival and American Black Film Festival last year, and is releasing on VOD and in select theaters beginning September. Based on the true events that led to the death of Mr. Chamberlain, an elderly African American veteran with bipolar disorder, who was killed by police officers during what was supposed to be a routine wellness check. Starring Frankie Faison as Kenneth Chamberlain Sr., along with Steve O'Connell, Enrico Natale, Anika Noni Rose, and Laroyce Hawkins. Exclusive: Gravitas Ventures has acquired North American rights to The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain, writer-director David Midell’s movie about the real-life 2011 fatal shooting of a 68-year-old Black man by police in White Plains, NY. Frankie Faison plays Chamberlain in the pic, which won the jury and audience awards at the 2019 Austin Film Festival where it debuted. Gravitas will now release the film day-and-date in theaters and on-demand on September 17.
The pic tells the story of the final hours of the life of Kenneth Chamberlain Sr., an elderly African-American veteran with bipolar disorder, who was killed during a conflict with police officers who were sent to his home to check on him after his medical alert device was mistakenly activated. Despite Chamberlain informing the officers there was a mistake and he did not have an emergency, they were recorded taunting him, ridiculing his military service and howling racial epithets at him.

Spirit Awards 2021 Winners List: ‘Nomadland,’ ‘I May Destroy You,’ Riz Ahmed, Carey Mulligan Win Big
“Mank” is the big leader at the 2021 Oscars with 10 nominations, but that wasn’t the case at the 36th Film Independent Spirit Awards. The nomination leader at this ceremony was Eliza Hittman’s acclaimed “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” which the Academy shut out from the Oscars. The same goes for other beloved Spirit Award nominees like “First Cow,” “Miss Juneteenth,” and “The Assistant.” In other words, the Indie Spirit Awards were a breath of fresh air in this elongated awards season where underdog indie contenders finally get their due in the spotlight.
“Minari” also preformed strong at the Indie Spirits, earning six nominations to match its six Oscar nominations. Fellow Oscar nominees “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Nomadland” each picked up five Spirit Award nominations. Netflix was the most nominated studio with 16 nominations, followed by Focus Features with 10 and A24 with 9.

The virtual ceremony aired Thursday, April 22 on IFC at 7 p.m. Pt/10 p.m. Et and was hosted by “Saturday Night Live” star Melissa Villaseñor. Winners were chosen by all of Film Independent’s eligible members, including industry insiders and any movie fans who signed up for membership.

The 36th Film Independent Spirit Awards are set to take place this week as a welcome reprieve to this elongated Oscar season. Unlike the Academy Awards, where David Fincher’s “Mank” reigns supreme with 10 nominations, the 2021 Indie Spirit Awards are dominated by Eliza Hittman’s “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” which was shut out of the Oscar nominations. “Never Rarely” boasts seven Spirit Award nominations this year, including Best Feature and Best Director.
Unlike the Oscars, the Spirit Awards also boast a Best First Feature category to honor the greatest directorial debuts of the last year.
