Discovery’s 27th Annual Shark Week officially kicks off Sunday, Aug. 10 with the premiere of Air Jaws: Fin of Fury (8 p.m. Et). Veteran filmmaker Jeff Kurr led his team on a two-year hunt for Colossus, the aggressive “mega-shark” with a deformed dorsal fin he famously captured breaching at Seal Island, South Africa, in 2011. Here’s a sneak peek of two of the hour’s most tense moments, with commentary from Kurr.
Moment No. 1: Local shark wrangler Dickie Chivell boards “Parthenope” to aid the search in South Africa.

Tonight marks the start of Shark Week’s 25th Anniversary, and Discovery wastes no time giving viewers what they want — the breaching great whites off South Africa’s Seal Island. The behavior was first shot in 2001, but Shark Week 2012 seeks two new angles: In Air Jaws Apocalypse (9 p.m. Et), filmmaker Jeff Kurr lies on a “seal sled” that tows a decoy seal 15 feet behind him in order to film an attack by 14-foot great white/badass Colossus at surface level. (You might recall in Ultimate Air Jaws, shark expect/photographer Chris Fallows used the sled, but he only shot with a still camera.

Shark Week is almost here!
Celebrating its 25th year, Shark Week will kick off Sunday, Aug. 12 at 9/8c with Air Jaws Apocalypse. The special will pick up where the Emmy-nominated Ultimate Air Jaws left off, with shark expert Chris Fallows and natural history producer Jeff Kurr embarking on a quest to track a 14-foot great white named Colossus in Seal Island, South Africa.
Colossus certainly lives up to his name — even the other sharks fear him. The real question becomes: Are the filmmakers tracking him or is it the other way around? Check out an exclusive sneak peek of Air Jaws Apocalypse below:

It's the 25th anniversary of Discovery Channel's Shark Week extravaganza, otherwise known as the best thing ever on television ever, ever, ever, forever. The event kicked off July 17, 1988, and this year, Discovery promises to be shark-ier than ever with "specials that get you so close to the action, if you were any closer you'd be bait!"
It all begins August 12 at 9 p.m. Est. Throughout the week, you can expect to see eight new specials. 2011's "Ultimate Air Jaws" gets a follow-up with "Air Jaws Apocalypse," in which shark expert Chris Fallows and producer Jeff Kurr explore Seal Island, South Africa, risking their lives for a close encounter with the 14-foot great white shark known as Colossus.
In "Shark Fight," victims of shark attacks discuss the terrifying moments of their confrontations. They've persevered after losing their limbs to sharks -- and now, these victims have actually dedicated their lives to protecting sharks.

Jeff Kurr knows a thing or two about sharks.
During his two-plus decades with Discovery Channel's Shark Week, the La-based filmmaker has captured some of the most ground-breaking and dazzling footage of these feared creatures of the sea. This year, Kurr focuses his attention on the great white shark's return to our shallow waters and sandy beaches in "Great White Invasion."
To get psyched for Shark Week 2011, we sat down with Kurr to discuss all things cautious sharks, endangered sharks, and even a few frisky sharks.
What first motivated you to film sharks?
Well, very early on I thought, 'I'd really like to do that some day.' And lo and behold, through fate, luck, and being blessed, I had an opportunity to work on a Shark Week show way back in '91. It was pretty successful and I was offered another show, and another show, and here we...

Discovery kicks off its 24th annual Shark Week on Sunday, July 31, with the all-new special Great White Invasion (9 p.m. Et). It’s a fascinating examination of why great white sharks are swimming closer to shore in Southern California, Australia, and South Africa, and who’s really at risk — us or them. (Spoiler: It’s them.) Jeff Kurr, a filmmaker who’s been a part of Shark Week since 1991, noticed the phenomenon while shooting last year’s Ultimate Air Jaws special with wildlife photographer Chris Fallows. In Great White Invasion, Fallows wants to show people that great whites won’t...
