- He has had a 60-year career in broadcasting, including armed forces radio, pirate radio, and the BBC. He started out in radio while serving in the Royal Air Force in West Germany and Kenya. During the 1960s he was a pirate radio presenter with Radio Caroline and Radio London, which broadcast from ships outside British territorial waters to circumvent regulations that prevented commercial radio.
