Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Melanie Lynskey is entering the “Yellowjackets” episode “Burial” as her 2023 Emmy Award submission for Best Drama Actress. “Burial” aired on May 12, 2023, and is the seventh episode of the Showtime show’s second season.
In “Burial,” Shauna (Lynskey) processes the trauma of losing her son in the wilderness as the adult Yellowjackets survivors reunite for the first time. The episode was directed by Anya Adams and written by Rich Monahan and Liz Phang.
Lynskey is a double 2023 Emmy Award nominee thanks to “Yellowjackets” and her Best Drama Guest Actress nomination for “The Last of Us.” Previously, Lynskey was an Emmy nominee last year in the Best Drama Actress category for Season 1 of “Yellowjackets.”
For this 2023 contest, Lynskey is competing against Sharon Horgan (“Bad Sisters”), Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”), and Sarah Snook (“Succession”). Last year’s category winner,...

Plot: More than a century after the season one finale, tension mounts throughout the galaxy in “Foundation” season two. As the Cleons unravel, a vengeful queen plots to destroy Empire from within. Hari, Gaal, and Salvor discover a colony of Mentalics with psionic abilities that threaten to alter psychohistory itself. The Foundation has entered its religious phase, promulgating the Church of Seldon throughout the Outer Reach and inciting the Second Crisis: war with Empire. The monumental adaptation of “Foundation” chronicles the stories of four crucial individuals transcending space and time as they overcome deadly crises, shifting loyalties and complicated relationships that will ultimately determine the fate of humanity.
Review: Isaac Asimov’s iconic Foundation novels are not Game of Thrones. Foundation has long been considered unfilmable, an intelligent blend of science fiction and philosophical drama. The first season adaptation, created by David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman, bridged the gap...

Do the adult Yellowjackets really feel like reminiscing about life in the wilderness?
In “Burial,” Episode 207 of Showtime’s popular drama, a reunion of the adult women finally occurs at Lottie’s Camp Green Pine, where Shauna (Melanie Lynsey) joins Taissa (Tawny Cypress), Misty (Christina Ricci), Natalie (Juliette Lewis) and Van (Lauren Ambrose) to take in a few, er, treatments before gathering for some adult refreshments by the fire. No one, however, is really interested in looking back at their time starving in the forest, especially when there are much heavier developments to wrestle with (like Van’s admission to Taissa that she has a fatal form of...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Yellowjackets” Season 2 Episode 8, “It Chooses.”]
“Does a hunt that have no violence feed anyone?”
That’s the question posed to Lottie (Simone Kessell) by her “therapist” — quickly revealed to be her subconscious — in “Yellowjackets” Season 2, Episode 7, the question whose answer and meaning reveal themselves in ghastly fashion in Episode 8, “It Chooses.” Not only are our survivors starved and delirious, but they now hunger as much for food as for fight to acquire it.
Directed by Daisy von Scherler Mayer and written by Sarah L. Thompson & Liz Phang, “It Chooses” is littered with indicators of everyone reaching the end of their tether during the bleak midwinter. There is hunger, there is starvation, and then there is whatever this is; exhaustion, blurred vision, hallucinations of blood spilling from the walls, cradling your pet mouse corpse and being tempted to take a bite out of his emaciated body. Only Nat (Sophie Thatcher) says it,...

[This story contains spoilers from the seventh episode of Yellowjackets season two, “Burial.”]
Ever since Yellowjackets co-showrunner Jonathan Lisco said that cannibalism wouldn’t be the most transgressive plot point of the second season of Showtime’s hit survival series, the audience has been wondering: What could be more morally confronting than watching that Jackie feast?
The seventh episode, titled “Burial,” answered that question when it ended with Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) beating Lottie (Courtney Eaton) nearly to death. The 1996 timeline picked up after the stillbirth of Shauna’s son, and with Lottie offering herself as a literal punching bag for Shauna’s grief, which has now turned into rage. Lottie lets Shauna swing punch after punch and doesn’t resist, as the rest of the cabin stands by watching and Lottie’s face is left nearly unrecognizable from the blows. But, the fight is intercut with scenes from the present-day timeline, where all of the adult survivors have finally...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Yellowjackets” Season 2 Episode 7, “Burial.”]
It should have been impossible, but the “Yellowjackets” vibes have gone from bad to worse.
Not the show itself — indeed, Episode 7 might be the best Season 2 episode to date — but the atmosphere in Unspecified Canadian Forest Hell grows bleaker by the day. The survivors are starving, exhausted, trapped in a blizzard with a corpse while another freezes outside, and moving forward has never been more difficult (for some more than others).
“Burial,” directed by Anya Adams and written by Rich Monahan & Liz Phang, picks up in the tragic aftermath of Shauna’s (Sophie Nélisse) fatal delivery, where she is resting but not speaking and refusing to even drink water. The show doesn’t sit in the immediate trauma, even though the characters have probably dwelled on it for hours; Nélisse gives a mostly wordless performance this episode, conveying Shauna’s loss through heavy silence, whispered confessions,...

[Editor’s note: This review contains spoilers for “Yellowjackets” Season 2 Episode 4, “Old Wounds.”]
The Yellowjackets may not have made it to nationals, but in Season 2, Episode 4, the competition is on.
As the winter of their discontent wears on, the stranded high school students and their actively disassociating coach (Steven Kreuger) are running out of food. The situation is so dire that people are ostensibly stealing raw bear meat from the food stores to eat more than their allotted share (or are they? More on this later). It doesn’t help that the group’s only two hunters can’t find any fresh game, or that they didn’t even catch the group’s main meals: the bear that bowed to Lottie (Courtney Eaton) and gave its life in Season 1 and the birds that mysteriously fell on their roof just one episode prior.
All of that comes to the forefront in Season 2, Episode 4, “Old Wounds,” written by Ashley Lyle,...

Writers had to share the spotlight with independent filmmakers and sound designers last night, but they’ll have it all to themselves tonight when the 75th annual Writers Guild of America awards are officially unveiled.
The WGA Awards took place in concurrent ceremonies tonight at New York’s Edison Ballroom and Los Angeles’ Fairmont Century Plaza. The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and the Writers Guild of America, East (Wgae) labor unions represent writers in motion pictures, television, cable, digital media, and broadcast news.
Michelle Buteau was hosting from New York and said she felt “luckier than Pete Davidson’s dick” to be presiding over the ceremony. Her raucous monologue included lines such as, “Tom Cruise is more of a ‘Bottom Gun’ than a ‘Top Gun.'”

Sunday’s 75th Writers Guild of America Awards will conclude the guild season (and a four-guild kudos weekend). Will they portend good things to come at the Oscars for the winners?
“Everything Everywhere All at Once,” written by Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, and “Women Talking,” written by Sarah Polley, are projected to win the Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay prizes, respectively. The caveat, of course, is that neither is facing its top Oscar competition at WGA due to the guild’s eligibility requirements. Martin McDonagh‘s “The Banshees of Inisherin” script, which won the Golden Globe and BAFTA, is Awol in original, as is Oscar nominee “Triangle of Sadness.” And BAFTA’s adapted screenplay champ “All Quiet on the Western Front,” written by Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell, is ineligible, along with Oscar nominee “Living.”

Sunday’s 74th Writers Guild of America Awards will wrap up the guild season, along with the American Society of Cinematographers Awards. Will the winners be an Oscar preview?
“Licorice Pizza,” written by Paul Thomas Anderson, and “Coda,” by Sian Heder, are favored to win Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay, respectively. However, they are not facing off against many of their Oscar rivals as the WGA’s rules have rendered several scripts ineligible, including Oscar nominees “Belfast” and “The Worst Person in the World” in original, and “Drive My Car,” “The Lost Daughter” and “The Power of the Dog” in adapted. The Strain, Season Two, Episode Five, “Quick and Painless”
Written by Liz Phang
Directed by J. Miles Dale
Airs Sundays at 10pm Est on FX
Here’s a recap of what happened in “Quick and Painless”: Ephraim goes undercover to take Nora’s and his findings to Washington DC, Nora and Dutch negotiate Fet’s release from police custody, Abe consorts with a rare item-finder who should have his own Discovery channel show, and Palmer and Coco get close. That’s it. This week’s episode is sadly underwhelming for a series where there are so many interesting plot points to expand upon. Flashbacks of Abraham’s past have been consistently entertaining, yet there were none. With so little progress worth expanding on, this week’s review will be dedicated to a character whose spotlight was far too bright in this episode: Ephraim Goodweather.
