I’ve got a fascinatingly funny trailer for you to watch today for a new documentary called The Insufferable Groo. This film follows a Utah-based filmmaker named Stephen Groo as he embarks on a journey to make his dream movie.
That movie is called Unexpected Race, and it’s a “drama between a mother, a father, a daughter, and then an elf.” By the way, this is not a mockumentary! This is a real documentary about a real filmmaker that you’ve never heard of until now. He’s made over 166 movies in 17 years and as you might expect, they aren’t the best quality films, but they guy just keeps pumping them out!
This guy is a little crazy and odd, and he’s seriously cut from the same cloth as someone like Tommy Wiseau. That’s not a bad thing! The guy certainly has passion and isn’t giving up on his dream!

The Utah-based filmmaker has nearly 200 low- or no-budget credits to his name, and he’s the subject of a new documentary called The Insufferable Groo, which follows the title […]

Exclusive: Gravitas Ventures has acquired North American theatrical and VOD rights to the Scott Christopherson documentary The Insufferable Groo. The docu follows a low budget indie filmmaker Stephen Groo who sets off to cast Jack Black in his newest feature film about an elf-human love story. The Insufferable Groo will open in select theaters in December and on demand December 14.
The Insufferable Groo made its world premiere at the Sheffield Doc/Fest earlier this year and recently played at Doc NYC.
The documentary follows Utah-based filmmaker Groo, a self-proclaimed auteur, narrowing in on his 200th film in 20 years. His oeuvre of outlandishly awful genre films has managed to attract admirers like Napoleon Dynamite’s Jared Hess and Jack Black, but Groo has never made a dime off of his work, leaving his wife to provide for their family of four small boys. As Groo attempts to make his latest opus,...

Among the 200-plus films that screened at the Sheffield Doc/Fest, which ended last week, one standout fit into that classic mold: movies about moviemaking. But The Insufferable Groo takes a somewhat different path than most, focusing on possibly the world’s most prolific yet unsuccessful filmmaker.
A cult figure for many students of film in the U.S., Stephen Groo has spent 20 years making more than 200 microbudget Diy movies, boasting names such as She-Hulk, Circle of Fire: The Dark Lord and Challenge of Faith. Despite his efforts, not one has secured distribution or turned a profit.

The Sheffield Doc/Fest, one of the largest non-fiction festivals in the world, kicked off this weekend with around 200 films as it celebrates its 25th anniversary.
