Imagine a constellation of stars—not in the sky but arrayed across the shimmering surface of a Vanity Fair cover. Who could outshine the radiant glamour of Matt Damon and Tom Hanks when gathered with their companions in this vintage picture of 13 iconic Hollywood A-listers in 2003?
2003’s Vanity Fair special on the ‘Kings of Hollywood’ showcased some of the most prominent faces in the industry, including Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Jack Nicholson, Harrison Ford, and Brad Pitt. However, it was not until you delved further into the magazine that you discovered the other eight actors in the picture.

The relationship between brothers Phil (Benedict Cumberbatch) and George Burbank (Jesse Plemons) in The Power of The Dog is... complicated, to say the least. The film, which recently received 12 Oscar nominations — including best picture and best director — introduces us to the ranch-owning siblings. A decades-old tension simmers between the pair, with Phil trying to assert dominance over their shared territory. Things get even more intense when George marries an inn owner named Rose, bringing her and her son, Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee), into their already-complex family dynamics, with the unpredictable Phil seemingly intent on tormenting them both.
Crafting such a nuanced relationship between two characters is no easy feat, but Cumberbatch and Plemons were given a specific rehearsal technique to help them find their way: dancing.
In a recent interview with Netflix Queue’s Krista Smith, Cumberbatch recounted the way director Jane Campion...

Netflix has unveiled some of the first photos for the upcoming fourth season of the Duffer brothers’ Stranger Things, and there’s definitely a creepy feeling about what’s to come.
As was previously reported, Season 4 will premiere in two “volumes,” the first on May 27 and the second on July 1. Volume 1 picks up six months following the conclusion of Season 3, which had our heroes battling the Mind Flayer in the middle of the Starcourt Mall.
Per the official logline: “It’s been six months since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins. Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends are separated for the first time – and navigating the complexities of high school hasn’t made things any easier. In this most vulnerable time, a new and horrifying supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a gruesome mystery that, if solved, might finally put an end to the horrors of the Upside Down.

Eddie Murphy has had plenty of people urging him to return to standup comedy for the first time since the late 1980s — but one fan’s input in particular left an impression: former President Barack Obama.
Murphy, during an interview with “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert on Friday, said Obama helped spark his interest in getting back onstage.

You can go home again. Eddie Murphy has already announced he’s returning as a host to Saturday Night Live in its upcoming season after a long hiatus. Now, he’s hinting that another homecoming of sorts is in the works, as he said on a podcast that he would be mounting a stand-up tour in 2020.
Murphy has been rumored to be talking with Netflix about a series of stand-up specials. His past efforts, including 1983’s Delirious and 1987’s Raw, were enormously popular, and he commanded arena-level crowds before he went on to bigger and better things in films.

Netflix’s next stunt to charm major awards show voters is a full-fledged magazine.
The 100-page inaugural issue is set to be published in June, and will highlight some of the nearly 700 projects Netflix released last year as well as the talent behind them, Bloomberg reports.
That publication month, of course, is no coincidence: June is when members of the television academy vote on Emmy nominations. Netflix will pass out copies of the magazine, tentatively called Wide, at events set up to promote its original programming to Emmys voters. The magazine apparently won’t be distributed outside of those events — at least for now.
Once Emmys voting season is over, Wide isn’t going to go away. In fact, considering Netflix just hired Vanity Fair editor Krista Smith as a long-term consultant for Wide, it’s likely the publication is intended to become a staple promotional avenue for at least...

Krista Smith, Vanity Fair’s longtime West Coast editor, has accepted a consulting job at Netflix but is still planning to remain on the magazine masthead as a contributing editor, a person familiar with the matter told TheWrap.
Smith has spent more than two decades with Vanity Fair, first joining the publication as a fact checker in 1989 under longtime editor Graydon Carter, who retired last year.
She will officially start with Netflix on April 15 as a consultant covering matters concerning events, awards and talent relations, the individual said, adding that Smith will perform a dual role that will see her report to Netflix original films head Scott Stuber and awards chief Lisa Taback.

With the Critics’ Choice Awards just hours away on Sunday January 13, our 30 Oscar experts from major media outlets are hoping to get guidance from these key precursor prizes as to what will win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Their votes remain split between four films, with two of these far out front of the other two.
Since being all but shut out of the Golden Globes, “A Star is Born” has seen its lead over “Roma” in the Best Picture race at the Oscars shrink. It now leads our experts tally by a vote of 16 to 10. Three of our experts are holding out hope for “Green Book,” which won Best Comedy/Musical at the Globes while one is backing “BlacKkKlansman.” [See the most up-to-date Best Picture rankings by our 30 Experts.]
Although “A Star is Born” enjoys a clear majority of first-place votes from the experts, it is not that far ahead of “Roma” and “Green Book” on our Best Picture odds chart.

Amazon Studios is close to a deal with actor Blake Lively for a new scripted series. Jennifer Salke, head of the e-commerce giant’s entertainment division, teased the project Wednesday and the Vanity Fair New Establishment Summit.
Speaking with Vanity Fair‘s Krista Smith, Salke said that she has been recently meeting with Lively in New York to discuss a possible collaboration. She teed up her tease of the project by talking about the deal Amazon set last month with Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn for a new unscripted series about fashion.
“Blake also has a huge appetite for a big scripted show with a really interesting writer who I can’t talk about yet that she’s targeted who will bring to life a scripted show that will be excellent and culturally relevant and original and all those things, but it will also have a connection to a merchandising opportunity,...

More than 20 minutes into Friday’s “The Crown” panel, it seemed the cast would never address the royal elephant in the room. But then Vanity Fair’s Krista Smith asked her final question: What about the pay gap?
Amid a media storm surrounding reports that Matt Smith, who plays Prince Philip, received a higher salary on the series than Claire Foy, who plays Queen Elizabeth, Netflix canceled red carpet interviews for the event in North Hollywood on Friday. However, during the panel with Foy, Vanessa Kirby, show creator Peter Morgan, and costume designer Jane Petrie, Foy shared her thoughts on the controversy.
“I have had the most extraordinary revelation about myself and womankind,” Foy said. “It’s sort of amazing that the conversations people are having now, people think we’ve always been able to have, but we haven’t. You asking me that question is probably the first time...

“Dunkirk” is ahead to win Oscars for Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing, and it’s no wonder since action-packed war movies often do well in audio categories. If the film indeed wins the award for its sound editing, it would additionally make history as Richard King would set a new record for the most wins in that category.
There is currently a six-way tie for the most Sound Editing wins. Ben Burtt, Charles L. Campbell, Per Hallberg, Richard Hymns, Gary Rydstrom and King have three victories apiece, including years when the prize was handed out as a special achievement award and not a competitive Oscar. King previously won his Oscars for “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” (2003), “The Dark Knight” (2008) and “Inception” (2010), and he earned additional nominations for “War of the Worlds” (2005) and “Interstellar” (2014). As final Oscar voting ended on Feb. 27, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” leapt ahead of “The Shape of Water” in the race for Best Picture. Martin McDonagh‘s character study now has the votes of 11 our 27 Oscar experts from major media outlets to win while Guillermo del Toro‘s fantasy has fallen back to nine. Those respective levels of support translate into odds of 17/10 versus 9/4.

Vanity Fair Oscar-watcher Krista Smith predicts “The Shape of Water” will win Best Picture because “it hits all of the notes,” she says in our webcam chat. (Watch above or listen to audio podcast version below). “It’s a full, realized story. It’s so original. Director Guillermo Del Toro is a master.”
Runner-up is probably “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” she notes, but adds, “My number two would be ‘Dunkirk’ if I was a voter. The film showed you want war was like.”
However, Krista warns to watch out for “Get Out,” since “all of the new, young voters” could rank it in second or third on their ballots, triggering a surprise win thanks to the quirks of the preferential ballot.
