It’s official: Indira Varma has entered the Whoniverse – or rather, re-entered. Varma is the latest cast member announced for Doctor Who series 14, playing the mysterious ‘Duchess’ – quite the villain by the sounds of it, as Russell T Davies promises “a whole new audience will be hiding behind the settee when the Duchess unleashes her terror.”
But while these days Varma is best-known for her roles in Game of Thrones, Obi Wan and Obsession, not only has she already worked with Davies on Torchwood, she’s starred alongside a whole host of Doctor Who’s most notable alumni:
She Was Torchwood’s First Villain Back in 2006
Varma’s got form when it comes to playing lovable baddies in the Whoniverse – like Peter Capaldi, she appeared on Torchwood before her Doctor Who debut. Her character Suzie Costello was a key part of the Torchwood team, but her fear of death led...

The latest episode of Doctor Who featured the long-awaited return of Captain Jack Harkness, but it might also have dropped a hint about the show’s spinoff, Torchwood, making a comeback.
After rescuing the Doctor from the Judoon prison, Jack sticks around to help the Tardis crew fight the ongoing Dalek incursion. And when the threat is finally dealt with, he disappears again, but not without leaving his friend a message first. In the final moments of the episode, just before Ryan and Graham’s tear-jerking goodbye, he calls up the Time Lord to let her know that he’s staying on Earth, saying: “Sorry, lost track of time. Gwen Cooper sends her love by the way. Says she took out a Dalek with a moped and her son’s boxing gloves. Anyway, I’m gonna stick around on Earth and catch up with her. I’ll call you!”

The most hyped part of the Doctor Who New Year’s special, “Revolution of the Daleks,” was the return of John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness for the first time on screen since Torchwood ended in 2011. Whovians have always been campaigning for a revival of the adult-themed spinoff show, but so far nothing has materialized. The open ended way Jack is written out of the special, though, seems to suggest that some kind of revival or reboot could be on the cards.
Oddly enough, Jack and the Doctor don’t say goodbye on camera, following the defeat of the Daleks, with the Time Agent instead sending a quick voice message to the Time Lord in the Tardis at the end of the episode. “Sorry, lost track of time,” he tells her over the phone. “Gwen Cooper sends her love, by the way – says she took out a Dalek with a...

The David Tennant era of Doctor Who may be long over, but the good folks at Big Finish Productions have managed to bring most of the stars of this golden period of the show back for more in the form of audio dramas. Previously, the likes of Billie Piper, Catherine Tate and the Tenth Doctor himself have returned to the Whoniverse in this way. Now, another star has been announced to be making a comeback: Freeman Agyeman, who played companion Martha Jones from 2007-2010.
Agyeman isn’t returning for a Who drama, however, but for a special one-off Torchwood audio adventure titled Dissected. The actress is part of the world of the adult-oriented spinoff show, too, as she appeared as Martha for three episodes of its second season.
Big Finish revealed the news on Monday, with Agyeman commenting on how much she’s enjoying being back:
“Aw mate, the nostalgia has been quite overwhelming.

Torchwood is back - on audio - and Naoko Mori could be reprising her role of Toshiko 'Tosh' Sato.
Mori told Digital Spy that she has been approached about playing Tosh again in Big Finish's series of audio dramas.
"I miss Torchwood so much," she admitted. "On Twitter, there's been a lot of fans saying, 'Bring it back!' - and it would be so nice to do something.
"I know there's a radio thing happening and they've talked to me about it as well, so hopefully that'll happen in due course."
It's been seven years since Tosh - and her unrequited love interest Owen (Burn Gorman) - were killed off in the gut-wrenching episode 'Exit Wounds'. But if you're still not over it, don't worry - neither is Naoko.
"Still to this day, just thinking about it makes me feel very sad," she said. "That was a really tough scene.

Following in the footsteps of Captain Jack and Ianto, Gwen and Rhys will return for a new Big Finish Torchwood audio story…
Big Finish – the team who have brought us countless Doctor Who audio adventures and several spin-offs – are continuing their Torchwood-themed recruitment drive.
Specifically, they've found a space for Gwen Cooper and Rhys Williams. The loveable couple, described accurately in the press bumf as ‘the heart of Torchwood,’ will return for the third release in Big Finish’s upcoming Torchwood series.
Following in the tradition of bringing back the original cast members (the first story will feature John Barrowman returning as Captain Jack, and the second will star Gareth David-Lloyd as Ianto), Big Finish has nabbed Eve Myles and Kai Owen to reprise their roles from the show.
“Listening to the two of them back together is an utter joy,” says producer James Goss. “We pick up their story after Miracle Day.

For nine years, from 1993 through 2002, Friday was the night to stay home or at the least to make sure your favorite television recorder was programmed correctly.
I’m talking about The X-Files, created by Chris Carter and which starred then relatively unknown actors David Duchovny as FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder, an Oxford-trained behavioral psychologist, and Gillian Anderson as FBI Special Agent Dana Scully, an M.D. specializing in forensic medicine. Together they investigated the so-called “X-Files” of the FBI: cases that involved crimes on the margins of “normal,” paranormal activities, and UFO goings-on.
It became the Fox (no pun intended) network’s highest rated show and won numerous awards over its original lifetimes, including 16 Emmy Awards, five Golden Globes, and a Peabody Award over its run; it also received nominations and wins from the Directors Guild, the Writers Guild the Screen Actors Guild, the Television Critics Association, and the Saturn Awards.

Doctor Who has blown up stateside, but Starz’s attempt to harness the same popularity for adult-oriented spinoff Torchwood with miniseries Miracle Day was met with little enthusiasm from critics, despite solid ratings. After the conclusion of that series in 2011, Torchwood‘s fourth, creator Russell T. Davies announced that the show would be entering an indefinite hiatus, which led many fans to believe that Torchwood might disappear from airwaves for good. Now, though, star Eve Myles has reaffirmed her allegiance to the series.
Talking to CultBox, Myles said that she hasn’t heard anything concrete about a fifth season of Torchwood, but that hasn’t hampered her enthusiasm at the prospect of reprising the role of Gwen Cooper:
“There’s been talks about it for a while, but I’ll believe it when it lands on the desk really, and I’ll see about it then. I certainly wouldn’t turn it down.

Peter Capaldi is far from the only Doctor Who actor to appear in multiple roles. Mark talks us through the many others to have done so...
It's been just over a year since the BBC announced that Peter Capaldi would play the Twelfth Doctor. There were rumblings of his casting in the week before the announcement was made, to the point where bookies stopped taking bets on it.
We've spent the last twelve months in anticipation of what seems like dream casting for the Time Lord, but some of us were a little sceptical that an actor of his profile and standing would take the role until it was actually announced, but “he's been in it before” was not atop the list of reasons why we thought it was too good to be true.
Over the course of 50 years, Doctor Who has inevitably reused actors as different characters- there are...

We've spent the last twelve months in anticipation of what seems like dream casting for the Time Lord, but some of us were a little sceptical that an actor of his profile and standing would take the role until it was actually announced, but “he's been in it before” was not atop the list of reasons why we thought it was too good to be true.

Seriously: Do not read on if you haven't watched 'The Children' yet - or you only have yourself to blame!
"Once a cheater, always a cheater!" - Rachel Karen Green, September 25, 1997
We might live in the age of the TV anti-hero - with theft, deception and even murder often considered par for the course for our protagonists - but one sin that remains simply beyond the pale on television is cheating.
So while Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) was hit hard when his beloved Shae (Sibel Kekilli) betrayed him at his trial, the revelation that she'd been sleeping with his father Tywin (Charles Dance) - the lusty lion - was on a whole other level.

The CW’s fall schedule is, surprisingly, the one with the fewest changes from last year. The Flash will air on Tuesdays, The Originals will try to survive the network’s Monday night graveyard while Reign gets to keep its Vampire Diaries lead-in. Oh. Yes. Matt Davis will be a series regular in the upcoming season of The Vampire Diaries. I’ve missed Alaric since he’s been gone.
Here’s hoping Alaric has developed an allergy to fabric.
Michael Sam‘s agent, Cameron Weiss, says that the upcoming reality series focusing on Sam won’t include any footage from Sam’s team, the Rams, saying that producers haven’t asked for any rights to film on the field or in the locker room. Instead, the show will focus on Sam’s personal journey.

(Cbr) "Torchwood" star Eve Myles took the stage Friday afternoon at C2E2 for an hour of lighthearted banter, stories from the Torchwood set and tales of co-star John Barrowman’s frequently obscene antics. Myles, who was one of the "Doctor Who" spinoff series’ few constants through its four seasons, spoke with a fondness for her character Gwen Cooper, charming both the audience and moderator Elliott Serrano of Chicago’s free daily Red Eye. Myles began by greeting Chicago with an affected Chicago accent before quickly acknowledging, “That was shit, wasn’t it?” Then, “Thank you for coming to my talk – I hope I don’t bore the arse off you!” Though she often feigned embarrassment at her own swearing, that didn’t seem to slow the flow of mild profanity and rude stories — much to the delight of her crowd. “Sorry, I’m like a nine-year-old.” Serrano began the spotlight panel by saying,...

My pick for best fancy dress at Dragon*Con goes to the man with the Home Depot Horta from Star Trek's first season. Photo: Tony Sullivan My third day at the Dragon*Con scif-fi and fantasy event kicked off with a Doctor Who companions panel. Present were Noel Clarke (Mickey Smith), Eve Myles (Gwen Cooper), Gareth David-Lloyd (Ianto Jones) and veteran John Levene (Sergeant Benton). When asked what their favourite creature was, Myles quickly responded "John Barrowman".
Next up, Team Arrow, Kelly Hu, Seth Gable, Janina Gavankar, Manu Bennett and the irrepressible John Barrowman. In fact, I think they should just hand over the whole convention to Barrowman. Gavankar managed to hold her own, while Barrowman recreated falling off his chair from a panel the previous day and re-enacted a torture scene with Manu Bennett standing in for Stephen Amell, which involved a gratuitous nipple tweak.

For all of those who missed the 2011 run of the Saturn-award nominated series "Torchwood: Miracle Day," a miracle of sorts has occurred: The show will re-air this fall on BBC America. "Torchwood" premiered in 2007 and was Bbca's most watched program of the year. The "Doctor Who" spinoff was created by Russell T. Davies and starred John Barrowman as the immortal Capt. Jack Harkness. Barrowman was most recently seen by American audiences as villainous Malcolm Merlyn on The CW's "Arrow." "Miracle Day" is technically the fourth season of the show. It adds an American element, introducing CIA agents Esther Drummond and Rex Matheson (portrayed by Alexa Havins and Mekhi Phifer) to series veterans Harkness and Gwen Cooper ...

This weekend, Star Trek Into Darkness hits theaters and the common consensus among reviewers seems to be that Jj Abrams' adaptation of the beloved series is even better this time around. The thing we're most excited about, of course, is Zoe Saldana's return as a young Nyota Uhura. Apparently Saldana's role is much bigger this time around, which means the Star Trek sequel is a can't miss for us!
Of course, lesbian and bisexual women are not strangers to the world of science fiction. In fact, we often find better representation in the fantasy realm than in any other genre. And even when we don't find queer women to swoon over, we find powerful women to root for.

Eve Myles has admitted that she still hopes for a Torchwood comeback.
The actress - soon to be seen in new BBC One drama Frankie - told CultBox that the Doctor Who spinoff may return to television "now or... in twenty years time".
"We didn't come back for the fifth series," she acknowledged. "[But] it's still there - it's still bubbling away.
"If it has ended in Hollywood [with fourth series Miracle Day], well, then we came from BBC Three to BBC Two to BBC One to Hollywood - that's a drama in itself. Wonderful experience, wonderful memories."
Myles confirmed that she has heard nothing about a potential fifth series, but added that she is eager to reprise her role of Gwen Cooper.
"When [series creator Russell T Davies is] ready, if he is ever ready, then he's got people who love and adore it just as much as he does," she said.

“Something Awesome”. Seems an easy thing to ask for from a fellow who can go to any moment in time and space, and allows for lots of interpretation. So Clara asks for that, The Doctor is happy to provide, whisking her off to… The Rings Of Akhaten By Neil Cross Directed by Farren Blackburn The Doctor takes Clara to Akhaten, a group of worlds inside a series of asteroid belts orbiting a huge star. It’s the time of a ceremony that will supposedly keep the god which created their worlds asleep. Young Merry is elected to sing the history of their civilization, and is naturally skittish about getting it right. It’s made plain as time passes that this is more of a sacrifice than a simply ceremony, forcing The Doctor and Clara to take a hand in saving young Merry, and to keep the very real god from eating the system.

Torchwood (a clever anagram of “Doctor Who”) is the award-winning spin off from Doctor Who that stars Scottish actor, John Barrowman, as Captain Jack Harkness and Welsh actress, Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper.
2011 saw the show take off to America for an all-new series titled Torchwood: Miracle Day. It was received by millions worldwide and left everyone hungry for more. The series saw the story of the day when the human race stopped dying over a ten episode period.
However, now in the care of American TV company, Starz, the BBC no longer have any power over bringing the show back. The only person who does is its creator, Russell T Davies. He’s given many interviews on the subject and none of them lead us to believe the show will be returning anytime soon. He claims it was “personal reasons” that brought him back to Wales.

Having shown her the future, The Doctor plans to show Rose the past. Aiming for 1860 Naples, they land in 1869 Cardiff. Now, as a rule, the Tardis doesn’t land where there’s nothing going on, and this was no exception. At a local funeral home, the dead are rising again, and at an increasing rate.

If you're looking to see when "Torchwood" will be available on your television dial in 2012, you might want to look for something else. As expected, there is no movement behind producing more "Torchwood," either by BBC or its new American home Starz, which aired "Miracle Day" last year. And now the actress who plays Welsh cop Gwen Cooper is making it official. "Nothing's going to happen in 2012, I know that much for sure," Eve Myles recently told Cult Box. "But who knows what will happen in 2013. Maybe a movie, to kind of draw a line under it." Despite the hype going into "Miracle Day," the most recent season of "Torchwood" under-performed when it came to actual audience. But because Starz is a premium cable channel that does not depend on viewer totals for specific shows, it ...

Torchwood star Eve Myles has insisted that she will not be involved in the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. The actress, who has appeared as Gwen Cooper in both shows, told The Independent that any further crossover seems unlikely. She explained: "We have lots of adult themes running in Torchwood and I think it would be inappropriate for us to have anything to do with Doctor Who because it's predominantly a family programme." Myles added that spinoff series Torchwood "deals with darker subjects" than its parent show. "If they want to do [a crossover], then fine but I can tell you that I'm not involved in it," she said. "They won't (more)...

Torchwood: Miracle Day continues and finds our heroes separated across the world, until one chance meeting with Oswald Danes (Bill Pullman) forces the team to reunite and begin to ask the tough question: What is The Blessing?
As they dig deeper, their questions will take them to separate poles of the Earth where they discover that the blood of Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) may have more to do with The Blessing and The Miracle than they previously had thought.
During TARDISblend 36, we review the events of The Gathering, and find ourselves less than enthused about the episode's inclusion of elements unconnected to the Blessing and the Miracle, such as the Nazi-style Welsh police trackdown of Gwen Cooper's (Eve Myles) father, Geraint (William Thomas).
Later, we deconstruct Oswald Danes' arrival in Wales to confront Gwen, another aspect of the episode that felt somewhat out of place. We also discuss the...

Based on that globetrotting, apocalypse-flirting season finale of Torchwood, it’s hard to believe that this series began as just a Doctor Who spinoff on BBC Three about a black ops unit fighting aliens in apparently extraterrestrial-packed Cardiff, Wales. No, it still hasn’t come close to fulfilling its original mandate to give a more “adult” spin to the Who formula. Not by a mile. But what Torchwood still lacks in maturity it almost makes up with sheer expansiveness.

As any self-respecting Doctor Whooligan knows, the Torchwood: Miracle Day companion series Web of Lies is releasing its tenth and final episode this Saturday, one day after the Torchwood: Miracle Day finale airs on Starz. The series is a unique blend of short three to five-minute motion comic episodes (a la Showtime’s Dexter: Early Cuts) that contain mini-games (puzzles, word combinations, etc.) that must be solved in order to advance the story. It’s an interesting way to tell a side-story and certainly fleshes out the Torchwood universe, but that fleshing out will cost you. A Web of Lies preview is available on YouTube, but the entire 10-part companion series is available exclusively through an app for the iPad and iPhone, costing $2.99 for the entire catalog or $.99 for three episode bundles. For those of you not watching Torchwood: Miracle Day, the story follows Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and...
