Our present behavior and acts are fundamental in molding our identities and have an impact on shaping as well as determining our destiny. However, what occurs when a person is engulfed in a malady that prevents them from remembering time or the events that occurred within it? In the face of such circumstances, the person could feel extremely lost and confused. Their sense of identity and general well-being may be negatively impacted in the long run as they are unable to sustain personal relationships and navigate daily life due to the progressive deterioration of their memory. But arguably it is harder for the victim’s near and dear ones to suffer more because they are more aware of the inherent deterioration. However, the sufferer possesses the benefit of obliviousness.

Unpaused (Amazon Prime Video)
Directed by Raj-dk, Nikkhil Advani, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Avinash Arun Dhaware, Nitya Mehra
Straightaway, I must say the anthology comes as a welcome surprise.
When I heard of a Covid anthology I thought it would one of those let’s-make-hay-while-the-sun-shines kind of obscenely exploitative ventures. Thankfully, the films are born out of compassion rather than greed. The Covid theme flows organically out of the stories, and the characters are never allowed to feel sorry for themselves. These are bright stories burnished with a directorial acumen that elevates the theme from a topical statement to an enduring experience.
In the story Rat-a-Tat(inaptly clever title just because it’s got a rat in it) one of my favourite segments of the omnibus, a 65-year old uperclass woman(Lilette Dubey) finds herself getting close to a young feisty Maharashtrian girl who moves in from nextdoor when a rat infests her apartment.

Unpaused, with five stories that attempt to define the mood of urban India during lockdown, suffers from that problem. The film starts off on a high note, hits a slump immediately after that, and somehow manages to recover in the stories that follow.
Anthologies can be erratic -- in pace, tone and overall storytelling. When you have multiple directors calling the shots on multiple sets of actors in standalone stories, it is hard to find cohesion of quality. The parts that make up the entirety are often never consistently good or bad.
The uneven quality about Unpaused extends to the film's ability to surprise, too. The top pick, in terms of a unique idea, has to be the first story, Raj and Dk's Glitch. The story is quietly scary in the way it imagines an India in the future that has all but lost its battle with the coronavirus. Covid-...

Mumbai, Dec 8 (Ians) Filmmakers Raj and Dk, Nikkhil Advani, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Avinash Arun and Nitya Mehra will explore the themes of new beginnings and moving on through five different short films, which have been shot during the ongoing Covid pandemic.
The five short films comprise the anthology "Unpaused", the trailer of which was released on Tuesday.
Raj and Dk have made "Glitch", starring Gulshan Devaiah and Saiyami Kher. It is about a hypochondriac man who meets a strange girl on a blind date.
"Creating 'The Family Man' was a liberating experience for us as content creators, and the assurance of thinking unconstrained encouraged us to extend our collaboration with 'Glitch'. We loved making the short, as we tried a new style and genre! It was a bizarrely unique experience shooting it during the pandemic, and with all kinds of restrictions," said Raj and Dk.

ReviewThis is a ride through hell that you won't forget easily.Saraswati DatarThis world is actually divided into three worlds, a cynical middle-aged cop tells his naïve sincere subordinate in Paatal Lok, now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. There is swarg lok (heaven) where the rich and famous live, dharti lok (earth) when the ordinary middle class live, and then there is paatal lok (purgatory/hell) where society’s lowliest live. Insects and vermin who commit petty crimes, those no one really cares about. But sometimes, these ‘insects’ from hell enter into respectable homes in dharti lok and ‘bite’ human beings to cause a ‘kand’ (scandal), like the Aarushi kand or Nithari kand. Investigating kands gets you the promotions, he concludes before casually checking up on a man beating his wife in the street. The otherwise low profile Outer Jamuna Paar police station and Inspector Hathiram Chaudhary (Jaideep Ahlawat) are...

Bollywood Despite all of their encumbrances, there are moments when you can watch Karwaan for Dulquer and Irrfan.Rakesh MeharEarly in Karwaan, we’re introduced to Dulquer Salmaan, in his Bollywood debut, as Avinash Rajpurohit. Avinash is handsome, genial and ever so bored of the rut of the beaten path, but is not quite sure what to do about it. So, in the grand tradition of road movies everywhere, fate pushes him off on a picturesque journey through the backroads of Ooty and Kerala. On the face of it, there’s so much material to work from: tired of his It job and life in Bengaluru, Avinash one day receives a call telling him that his father, who pushed him into this middle-class humdrum has died in an accident near Gangotri. Unfortunately, when he goes to receive his father’s body, he finds out there’s been a mistake. His...

Karwaan
Starring Irrfan, Dulquer Salman, Introducing Mithila Palkar
Directed by Akarsh Khurana
Life’s like that. It takes some weird twists and turns to finally put you on the right road. Of course the “right” is often the wrong for some of us.
In a sequence that would have been profoundly amusing if it were not so tragic a beautiful lady looks at two coffins and tells Dulquer, “The right one is your father.”
“So far,” sighs Dulquer, “the right one was the wrong one for me.”
Well, ha ha to that.
Excavating humour from the innards of mortality is never easy. Writer-Director Akarsh Khurana attempts the near-impossible and comes up with a film that never offends, even when it poses some serious problems of pacing.
You know that the film is looking for ways to keep the journey going when there are unnecessary detours on the way. And why not?...

Set in rural Assam, where the backwaters of India can almost leave you desperately moving your entire life in a wooden boat, Dhunu (Bhanita Das) – a young girl on the brink of puberty wishes to form a rock band. Even though she defies multiple norms set by the repressive, culturally appropriate elders of the village – the ones that want her to stop climbing trees like a boy while learning supposedly ‘womanly-ethics,’ her imagination and sincerity make us vouch for her. Supported by a single mother who is as important as the little girl in this quiet tale with cardboard dreams, Rima Das’s Dhunnu feels like a character made out of her own soul.

CinemaThe film marks the Bollywood debut of Malayalam star Dulquer Salmaan and Marathi actor Mithila Palkar.Digital NativeThe makers of the Bollywood flick Karwaan had announced a couple of weeks ago that the film would make it to theatres on August 10. This had the fans of the lead stars excited as the movie went into the post-production mode. However, we now hear from sources in the know that the release date has been advanced by a week and it will hit the marquee on August 3. When enquired into what made the team decide on a new release date, it was revealed that the makers of Karwaan wanted it to have a solo run for two weeks before other films start hitting the theatres to cash in on the long Independence Day weekend. With a long line-up of films scheduled to release around the Independence Day week, it indeed seems to be a good strategy by the makers of Karwaan to release the film earlier. Karwaan is touted to be a comedy film that has Dulquer Salmaan and Irrfan Khan playing the leads with Kriti Kharbanda and Mithila Palkar featuring opposite them. Interestingly, it will mark Malayalam star Dulquer Salmaan and Marathi actor Mithila’s debut in Bollywood. Amala Akkineni will be seen in an important role in this flick. The film is directed by Akarsh Khurana and is bankrolled by Ronnie Screwvala. Anurag Saikia is the music composer for this flick while Avinash Arun has done the cinematography. Though Akarsh Khurana is wielding the megaphone for the first time, he has written films such as Hamshakals and Krrish 3. Dulquer has completed shooting for his portions in Karwaan and the film is currently in the post-production stage. Besides this Bollywood movie, the actor also has the Tamil movie Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal which is in the post-production mode. The romantic thriller is a Desingh Periyasamy directorial, which has Ritu Varma playing the lead opposite Dulquer. According to reports, Dulquer plays a happy-go-lucky youth in this film. Hichki
Starring Rani Mukerjee, Neeraj Kabi
Directed by Sidharth P Malhotra
There is a disarming idealism at the heart of this inspirational tale told without frills of fancy. The flights of daring that the protagonist Naina Mathur undertakes never seems irrelevant. On many occasions I found the plot veering towards a sweeping sentimentality that, given other circumstances, would be considered manipulative.
Not here.
Hichki dives deep into the collective consciousness of a nation inured in prejudices and comes up with some well-served lessons on humanism tolerance and generosity. It may not be India’s To Sir With Love. But by Jove, Rani Mukerjee in what easily ranks as her career’s best performances (yes, better than Black) gives Mr Sidney Potier a run for his heroic stature.
The plot derives its creative juices from a real-life British teacher who suffers from the Tourette Syndrome, a neurological disorder that causes painful verbal dysfunction in the sufferer.

The jury has come to a decision. It's Chaitanya Tamhane's Marathi masterpiece Court that goes as India's official entry to the Oscars, beating other strong contenders including Neeraj Ghaywan's Masaan, Avinash Arun's Killa and Kabir Khan's Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Tamhane's evocative film gently and non-judgmentally questions the loopholes in the Indian legal system. While the film's intrinsic merits cannot be questioned, one of the jury members for the Oscar contender Rahul Rawail has gone on record to question the jury's chairperson Amol Palekar's competence. Rawail tweeted, "Just want to clarify that I am proud of Court and fully support its selection. I resigned from the Oscar jury because of Mr. Palekar's obnoxious behavior." Court's director Chaitanya Tamhane remained oblivious of the controversies. Says Tamhane, "It's still hard for me to believe that my film has been so warmly received the world over. I began visiting...

Besides the story and performances, upcoming release Masaan is also being talked about for its real locations and showcasing the heart of India. Masaan is set in the backdrop of Benaras city and it has been beautifully captured. And the credit for it goes to director Neeraj Ghaywan and National award winning cinematographer Avinash Arun.
Director Neeraj says, "This film had to be set in Benaras because it's starting from the point of death healing people. It's like how they come-of-age while dealing with death of someone really close.
