The true American dream? A former Marine turned bankrupt pizzeria owner invents the modern-day bulletproof vest, and to prove its functionality, he shoots himself almost 200 times.
Sundance documentary “2nd Chance” is directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Ramin Bahrani and charts the rise and fall of Richard Davis, the creator of the bulletproof vest. A hero to police and the military until tragedy brought him down, Davis offers an American story of guns, violence, lies and self-deception, the official synopsis reads. Starting back in the 1970s, Davis was viewed as an eccentric revolutionary whose decades-spanning career in weaponry culminated in self-taped videos (“Second Chance vs. Magnum Force” was already featured on RedLetterMedia’s “Best of the Worst”) and the pursuit of larger-than-life celebrity, especially among police.
“Initially when I had heard about it, I thought it was going to be a typical rise and fall story that had a moral,” writer-director Bahrani told IndieWire earlier this year.

Showtime Documentary Films and Bleecker Street will release “2nd Chance,” an upcoming documentary from director Ramin Bahrani, in theaters in New York and Los Angeles on Friday, Dec. 2. The film will expand to additional cities on Dec. 9. Showtime will offer the doc on air, on streaming and on demand for its subscribers in spring 2023.
Bahrani’s feature-length documentary debut explores the life and legacy of Richard Davis, the charming and brash inventor of the modern-day, kevlar bulletproof vest, who shot himself 192 times to prove his product worked. Davis, who parlayed his self-tested invention into the launch of Second Chance — which became one of the largest body armor companies in the world — offers an American story of guns, violence, lies and self-deception. The death of a police officer wearing a Second Chance vest spearheaded Davis’ fall.
“I’m very happy to work with Showtime and Bleeker Street for the release,” said Bahrani.

“2nd Chance” is “The White Tiger” and “Chop Shop” filmmaker’s feature-length documentary debut and tells the story of Richard Davis, the man who invented the modern-day bulletproof vest and shot himself 192 times in order to prove to law enforcement and the military that his creation actually worked.

Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we shine a spotlight on key executives and companies outside of the U.S. shaking up the offshore marketplace. This week, we’re talking with British multi-hyphenate Charles Dorfman, who, through his two banners Samuel Marshall Films and Media Finance Capital, has worked across a range of titles from The Lost Daughter to 2nd Chance and his own directorial debut Barbarians. In his first major interview, he outlines his ambitions as a writer-director and as a financier-producer.
Charles Dorfman is coming off the back of a banner few months. Not only did the British writer-director-producer see the release of his debut feature Barbarians earlier this month but he also was a quiet fixture during the Oscar race this year, having produced Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut The Lost Daughter.

This past Friday, IFC Midnight released writer/director Charles Dorfman’s intense thriller Barbarians in theaters and on various digital platforms as well. Starring Iwan Rheon, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Tom Cullen, Barbarians is set over the course of 24 hours and explores the breakdown of civility and manners once a dinner party celebration takes a macabre turn, leaving those caught in the middle having to fight for their lives.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with both Charles Dorfman and Catalina Sandino Moreno about their experiences working together on the project, and the duo discussed how their collaborative efforts helped heighten the material in Dorfman’s script, the intimate nature of the production, and more.

Set over the course of twenty-four hours, Barbarians sees couple Adam (Iwan Rheon) and Eva (Catalina Sandino Moreno) wake up in their supposed dream house on Adam’s birthday. Lucas (Tom Cullen), property developer and friend of the couple, arrives for dinner with his actress girlfriend Chloe (Ines Spiridonov), to celebrate Adam’s birthday and the couple’s buying of the house. But secrets unravel over dinner, and when the doorbell rings the evening takes a nightmarish turn. As manners give way to madness, an ‘idyllic’ evening of celebration descends into a dark night of terror; and the group’s civilized dinner party turns out to be anything but.

Adam (Iwan Rheon) is writing a book. He’s wanted to do so throughhout his life and now that he and his artist partner Eva (Catalina Sandinbo Moreno) have settled into their beautiful new house at The Gateway, the time has come. It’s about a primitive man living in modern society, he explains. One of his guests, Lucas (Tom Cullen) laughs at him and tells him that it’s already been done, citing the Brendan Fraser film California Man. Adam tries to explain that he’s aiming for something very different, but he can’t get a word in, and soon the conversation has moved on.

When it comes to portraying sudden acts of violence, “Barbarians” is being released in one helluva week. And that unfolded in the middle of the Academy Awards. Or with any other home invasion thriller, for that matter.
Ostensibly held to celebrate the birthday of Adam (Iwan Rheon), nothing about the dinner for four at the film’s center feels celebratory. Adam has been unsettled all day after finding a wounded fox that keeps reappearing; his partner, sculptor Eva (Catalina Sandino Moreno), is excited to live in the kind of chilly modernistic home that just cries out for masked men to enter with weapons drawn; and their friends — influencer Lucas and his girlfriend Chloe (Inès Spiridonov) — are there almost entirely to drive the already fragile Adam further off the edge.

2022 Film Independent Spirit Awards: ‘The Lost Daughter’ Takes the Top Prize (Complete Winners List)
The 37th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards were handed out Sunday at the Santa Monica Pier, with comedy power couple Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally serving as hosts.
There weren’t too many surprises throughout the night. Troy Kotsur won the first award of the evening, Best Supporting Male Actor for “Coda,” very much as predicted. Taylour Paige took home Best Female Lead Actor, for “Zola,” while Simon Rex, of “Red Rocket,” walked away with Best Male Lead. Ruth Negga won Best Supporting Female Actor for “Passing,” beating out Jessie Buckley from “The Lost Daughter.”
But Maggie Gyllenhaal’s adaptation of the Elena Ferrante book won the three other categories in which it was nominated — Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Feature — and was the night’s biggest victor. Gyllenhaal gave three effusive thank you speeches, spreading her appreciation around to her cast, crew, financiers, publicist, husband and mother. “Women in film!

"It's the only realistic form of self-defense!" IFC Films has revealed an official trailer for an indie film titled Barbarians, a horror thriller from the UK opening in the US this April. This one played at both Fantastic Fest and at the Sitges Film Festival last fall to kick things off. Barbarians finds four friends' excursion to a remote country house taking a bizarre and violent turn when uninvited guests show up. This seems like a British dark comedy twist on Funny Games, with a dash of You're Next thrown in to spice it up. A dinner party in a country house brings four friends together for a birthday celebration. But as the night progresses secrets emerge and unsettling events begin to unfold around them. This stars Iwan Rheon, Tom Cullen, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Will Kemp. The masks are sort of creepy and the rest of it looks crazy.

Showtime Documentary Films has acquired the rights to “2nd Chance” out of Sundance, Ramin Bahrani’s documentary about the inventor of the bulletproof vest.
Bahrani’s film, his documentary feature debut, tracks the life of Richard Davis, who shot himself 192 times in demonstration of his invention’s safety. Showtime is planning a theatrical release of “2nd Chance” followed by a premiere on the network later this year heading into awards season.
Bahrani grapples with the pursuit of the American Dream, as he has done in many of his films, by juxtaposing the complexities of one man’s supposed virtue while speaking to the nature of power and impunity in America.
“2nd Chance” is written, directed and produced by Bahrani. Daniel Turcan and Johnny Galvin of Vespucci, Charles Dorfman and Jacob Grodnik also serve as producers. The film is executive produced by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer, Myles Estey, Bahareh Azimi and Marlon Vogelgesang.

The Gotham Awards will be the first awards body on the independent circuit to choose its winners for the year on Monday.
On the film side, two Netflix features lead the tally, both from debut women filmmakers — Rebecca Hall’s “Passing” and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Lost Daughter.” There isn’t always an obvious blueprint to predicting this group. As we saw with last year’s two tied categories, things could get interesting at Cipriani Wall Street. The Gotham are just the start of a busy week that has a great influence on the Oscar race. After Monday’s first critics and guild screening of Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” and Wednesday’s unveiling of Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley,” Thursday brings us the National Board of Review selections before the New York Film Critics Circle weighs in on Friday.

A good single location thriller can be the perfect calling-card for a new director. Buried, Pontypool, Locke; with the right slow-burn of a script, a strong lead and a bit of ingenuity behind the camera, a little can go an incredibly long way. So it’s something of a shame that Barbarians – the directorial debut of established producer Charles Dorfman, and starring Game of Thrones’ iconic bastard Iwan Rheon – doesn’t reach anywhere near the same heights, struggling to find a solid identity, or really any sense of tension, amidst its dinner party drama.
Rheon plays harshly against type as a softly-spoken filmmaker, locking horns with his machismo prick of a best friend-stroke-landlord (Tom Cullen) over his own birthday dinner, trading backhanded comments about all sorts of manly things, like money, and meat, and killing animals. Eventually things escalate beyond words, and Dorfman’s plot takes its fair share of unearned turns,...

Olivia Colman is captivating in the first trailer for Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut, “The Lost Daughter.”
The upcoming drama, based on Elena Ferrante’s novel of the same name, stars Colman as Leda, a middle-aged woman vacationing alone and having flashbacks to her days as a young wife and mother (with her younger self played by Jessie Buckley). Gyllenhaal wrote, directed and produced the movie.
In the trailer, Colman, whose character is on a “working holiday,” meets Dakota Johnson’s Nina, telling her she has two daughters of her own. She soon tells the young mother that “children are a crushing responsibility.”
The trailer also gives audiences a glimpse at Buckley, but if anything, it teases the captivating performance Colman delivers that will surely land her in the awards conversation as the race for best actress heats up.

Netflix has picked up Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut “The Lost Daughter” for additional territories, snapping up U.K., Benelux and German rights to the Venice-premiering feature.
The streaming service struck the deal with Entertainment One, which had previously secured the rights for these markets from Endeavor Content. The platform already held the majority of worldwide rights, and will launch the movie on Dec. 31. The film will be in select theaters in the U.K., U.S. and other markets on Dec. 17.
The film, which picked up the Best Screenplay award for Gyllenhaal out of Venice, was adapted from the 2006 novel by author Elena Ferrante. It stars Olivia Colman as a woman on holiday in Greece coming to terms with her rocky early relationship with her young daughters, evoking a theme of “unnatural motherhood” that will resonate with fans of Ferrante’s other works, namely “My Brilliant Friend” and the Neapolitan quartet of novels.

Not to be confused with Barbarians (the Netflix series), Barbarians at the Gate (Wall Street robber barons), or even Waiting for the Barbarians (the already forgotten adaptation of Nobel Prize-winning author J.M. The latest addition in the apparently burgeoning “dinner party from hell” sub-genre, Barbarians takes broad, nuance-free satirical swipes at white privilege, capitalistic excess, and, of course, toxic masculinity and its discontents with just enough verve, style, and thorny plot turns to keep the average horror fan modestly engaged. Broken up into chapters announced by black-and-white title cards, Barbarians initially focuses on Adam Davies, a TV...

Matt Taibbi’s “Hate Inc.: Why Today’s Media Makes Us Despise One Another” has been optioned by Vespucci, a media company that has made a practice of teaming up with journalists on movies, shows and podcasts.
Vespucci partnered with Charles Dorfman’s production company Samuel Marshall Films to option the rights to the non-fiction book. The plan is to develop “Hate Inc.” into a feature documentary. The company is still looking to attach a director.
“Hate Inc.” is a trenchant look at the changing media landscape, examining the ways that cable news and other platforms have turned reporting into entertainment and deepened the political divide. It also explores the mistakes that certain members of the media made while reporting on everything from Wmd in Iraq to the Mueller Report. The book was partly inspired by Noam Chomsky’s “Manufacturing Consent,” which looked at the ways that market forces and self-censorship skew media coverage.

HBO has released the first teaser trailer for “Tina,” a new documentary about legendary musician Tina Turner. Drawing on a wealth of never-before-seen footage spanning 60 years, audio tapes, personal photos, and new interviews with Turner herself, “Tina” promises an intimate and fresh look at the notoriously private icon. The broad strokes of Turner’s life have been pop culture fodder before, from her 1986 autobiography “I, Tina,” and the 1993 film “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” which drew from the book and starred Angela Bassett in an Oscar-nominated turn as the singer. However, “Tina” represents the first authorized feature documentary on Turner.
Turner first rocketed to stardom in the 1960s and ’70s, performing alongside her then-husband Ike. Off-stage, the partnership was violent, though the extent of the abuse wasn’t known until after the pair divorced and Tina began to speak publicly about her experiences. “Tina” will prominently feature the...
