G. Love & Special Sauce’s self-titled debut album was an out-of-left-field record upon its release in May 1994. An innovative concoction of rock, hip-hop, blues, and jazz music, its lead single “Cold Beverages” quickly overtook radio stations coast-to-coast that summer, but the band was none the wiser of its unusual, unexpected success.
“It was getting played on MTV, played on Beavis and Butt-Head,” G. Love tells Rolling Stone. “It was a hit record, but we didn’t know it was blowing up ‘cause we were doing 250 shows a year in a...

Deadline has confirmed that Byron Allen is taking another run at BET Media Group in a $3.5 billion bid sent to Paramount Global for BET and VH1. The offer followed a report that Paramount is in talks to sell BET to a management-led investor group.
Paramount put BET Media Group fielded offers for BET earlier this year, receiving bids from Allen, Tyler Perry and others, but took it off the table after determining that the offers weren’t high enough.
During an event in Atlanta, Perry said that he wasn’t a fan of the process. “I was disappointed about it for a number of reasons. The way it happened was disrespectful in a lot of ways,” he said, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Roy Orbison felt Elvis Presley‘s label wasn’t that great. He said the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll wasn’t a big fan of the music he made at that label. Orbison had a lot to say about his own experiences there. Regardless, the head of the label received an incredibly important honor the same night Elvis did.
Roy Orbison was on the same label as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins
During a 1988 interview with Rolling Stone, Orbison discussed signing on producer Sam Phillip’s label, Sun Records. Sun Records boasted many early rock ‘n’ roll artists, the most famous being Elvis. “Well, Johnny Cash was on Sun Records — he was making unusual records,” Orbison remembered. “And Presley was there, and Carl Perkins. I was really impressed with that little chicken on the Sun label, because it represented something unique.” The chicken in question was on the label’s logo.

From Robert Johnson’s alleged deal with the devil to Alice Cooper’s monster-filled performances, rock ‘n roll has always had a foot in the horror genre. Hell, even the world’s most successful metal band has some horror-inspired hits up its sleeves, with eerie songs like The Call of Ktulu and The Thing That Should Not Be adding some Lovecraftian flavor to Metallica’s discography.
That’s why it makes sense that a narrative concert film produced by Metallica would also borrow from some of their favorite genre thrills. And with Nimród Antal’s experimental masterpiece Metallica: Through the Never celebrating its 10th anniversary this month, I’d like to take this opportunity to dive into how this unique film uses its genre influences to tell a surprisingly compelling story accompanied by one of the band’s best live performances.

Though he certainly didn’t invent the genre, Elvis Presley became widely known as the King of Rock’ n’ Roll. Little Richard tried to reclaim that title during the 1970s with an album called King of Rock and Roll. Sadly, it didn’t work out well for him. Little Richard discussed why the album performed so poorly.
Little Richard tried to reclaim ‘King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’ from Elvis Presley with a covers album
There’s no broad agreement as to who invented rock ‘n’ roll. Some of the artists named as the genre’s progenitor include Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Robert Johnson, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard. The latter released an album called King of Rock and Roll in 1971, well after that title had been applied to Elvis. The album largely featured covers of songs by other stars such as Martha and the Vandellas, Three Dog Night, and The Rolling Stones.

BET Media Group is staying put, as Paramount Global has decided against selling its majority stake in the company.
Paramount Global began exploring the sale in March as part of an effort to generate cash to strengthen its flagship Paramount+ streaming service. But on Wednesday, according to Wall Street Journal, which first reported the news, the company informed bidders the sale won’t happen as it won’t generate a significant enough amount of money.
Representatives for Paramount Global didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment from TheWrap.
Interested buyers included Tyler Perry and Byron Allen, both of whom expressed immediate interest in March and were in talks to acquire BET Media. NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal also joined the fray in partnership Group Black, rapper and producer 50 Cent and “Black-Ish” creator Kenya Barris.

-- As drummer in a forgotten New Jersey band in the 1960s, David Chase never got close – never even got close to close – to making it in music. Yet from a sound check of his rock-infused HBO series "The Sopranos," it's clear the music never faded away.
So what better way for the TV revolutionary to make his film directing debut than with a story that's all about the music? Chase's "Not Fade Away" – a somewhat autobiographical drama about a Jersey boy playing drums in a `60s band and dreaming of stardom – would be called a promising first feature from some unknown filmmaker doing the rounds at Sundance. Coming from a Hollywood heavyweight who's spent decades in the TV trenches, it's a hopeful sign, or maybe just wishful thinking, that more of the quality that has fled film for television might somehow be channeled back to the big-screen.

When you want to get the music of legends like The Rolling Stones, James Brown and Bob Dylan in your movie, securing the licensing can be both tricky and expensive, and prohibitive for many filmmakers whose budgets may already be strained. But that's not the case for David Chase's "Not Fade Away," because in his back pocket, he has the secret weapon of Steven Van Zandt. The E Street Band member, executive producer, and rock 'n' roll enthusiast worked with Abcko Records to pull together this pretty damn impressive selection of tunes, which includes songs from the movie and a couple that aren't, but that help make this one a pretty nice little mixtape of tracks. Sitting alongside the aforementioned artists are Sex Pistols with their rare cover of The Modern Lovers' "Road Runner," blues legends Elmore James, Robert Johnson and Lead Belly, classic cuts by Van Morrison and...
