Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on January 4th, 2023, reviewing “Society of the Snow,” the third film version of one of the great survival stories in history, as it occurred in the Andes Mountain. Currently on Netflix.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
In 1972, an Uruguay rugby team takes off in two engine prop plane to fiy from Montevideo in Uruguay to Santiago, Chile. While over the Andes mountains in western Argentina, the inexperienced pilot reads his instruments wrong and hits a mountain ridge, shearing the wings and tail off. The fuselage with the passengers then slid down a glacier to rest in a snowy expanse in the middle of Andes nowhere. Of the 45 passengers and crew aboard, 12 died immediately and several others succumbed thereafter in the harsh conditions. It came down to 16 souls. They survived 60 days before two of them climbed a mountain to rescuers.

Society of the Snow Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Enzo Vogrincic, Agustin Pardella, Matias Recalt, Tomas Wolf, Diego Vegezzi, Esteban Kukuriczka, and Francisco Romero
Director: J.A. Bayona
Society of the Snow Movie Review ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
What’s Good: Bayona and his team match the scope of the environment with the scope of the character’s internal conflict, creating a powerful dilemma.
What’s Bad: The movie’s overreliance on narration makes some of the most potent moments feel flat when the film needs to explain all the internal turmoil in words.
Loo Break: While the movie is long, the pacing is relatively fast, and we see our character fall into more desperate situations by the minute; there are no breaks here.
Watch or Not?: This is a must-watch, especially now that we are close to the awards season.
Language: Spanish (with subtitles)

Plot: The true story of The Uruguayan 1972 Andes flight disaster, where a team of Rugby players crashed in the Andes, and the survivors had to endure the harsh elements, avalanches and starvation before finally being rescued thanks to their own heroic efforts.
Review: The Uruguayan Andes Crash is one of the most compelling survival stories ever told. There’s a reason it’s become a popular topic for documentarians and filmmakers, but with it dramatized so brilliantly in the film Alive, what’s the point of another version? I was wary of digging into Netflix’s lavish new movie, but the fact that it was directed by J. A. Bayona, whose film The Impossible (about the 2004 Tsunami) is pretty underrated, made me curious. I passed on seeing this at a local theatrical screening here in Montreal to watch the screener, but about 20 minutes in, I realized I had made a terrible mistake.

The story of the 1972 Andes plane crash and its survivors has inspired many books and movies, even the TV series Yellowjackets. With Society of the Snow, J.A. Bayona adapts Pablo Vierci’s book of the same name to make something that’s close to the reality of the experiences endured by those aboard Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571. The aircraft was carrying 45 passengers and crew, including 19 members of the Old Christians Club rugby team, when it crashed in the Andes. Of those, only 16 would survive across an ordeal that lasted two months.
The crash itself is harrowingly portrayed at the start of the film, and with a minimum of buildup. The plane’s tail and wings are torn away on impact while the fuselage sails down the snowy mountainside like a sled. We catch flashes of the passengers’ limbs twisting and breaking, of metal shooting into flesh. The story moves quickly from there,...

Director J.A. Bayona makes his screenwriting debut with Spanish film “Society of the Snow,” based on the devastating true story of an Uruguayan rugby team that was stranded in the wilderness for months after a harrowing plane crash. The story behind the plane crash was previously dramatized in Frank Marshall’s 1993 narrative feature “Alive,” which starred Ethan Hawke.
The Netflix film, which Spain has already chosen as its entry for this year’s Best International Film Oscar, follows the passengers of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, who were on their way to Chile before crashing in the heart of the Andes. Only 29 of its 45 passengers survived the initial accident; the survivors were then trapped in one of the most hostile and inaccessible environments on the planet, and had to resort to extreme measures to stay alive.
