The summer box office is supposed to be the time of year when popular movies can flourish, but this May has not been an ideal start to the season, with another highly anticipated film falling below expectations. Read on for the weekend box office report.
With the general lack of family films in theaters — allowing movies like “Kung Fu Panda 4” and even “Godzilla x Kong” to do very well — Paramount Pictures had very high hopes for John Krasinski‘s “If,” opening it in 4,041 theaters nationwide. Starring Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming (with Krasinski in a small role as the latter’s father), the movie received poor to mixed reviews with just 49% on Rotten Tomatoes, critics not having been swayed by the film’s sweet family-friendly sentimentality.

Every movie is a miracle, and few movies are as seminal but also as well-documented almost-disasters as the original "Star Wars" trilogy. From actors almost quitting, to inventing visual effects and barely delivering on time, and much more as the trilogy went on, it's shocking that "Star Wars" has become the cultural juggernaut that it has.
Thankfully, the movies were released, and they became a huge turning point in American blockbuster cinema. Part of why "Star Wars" works as a franchise is that it features a fully fleshed-out world. The galaxy far, far away is one with vast, unique, and lived-in worlds with their own cultures, their looks, and ecosystems. There are countless creatures with intricate designs that make this feel like a real world filled with real people. Part of why this worked so well is that George Lucas was intentionally vague when it came to the look of the world,...

This Star Wars: Ahsoka review contains spoilers.
Ahsoka Episode 7
“Dreams and Madness,” Ahsoka season 1’s penultimate episode, looks great on paper but falls short in execution. We get to spend more time with Ezra and Sabine, we get to see Thrawn exert his tactical dominance from his war room on Peridea, there’s a frantic space chase inside a Purrgil graveyard, and we’re even treated to a lengthy cameo by C-3Po. So why does the episode fall a little flat?
It’s not that there’s one big issue that tanks the entire episode. Rather, it’s an accumulation of little creative decisions that don’t hit the mark. Take C-3Po saving Hera and Teva’s asses in the courtroom, for example. It’s fun to see him put Senator Xiono in his place and clear Hera’s name on Leia’s behalf, but as a courtroom scene,...

This article contains spoilers for "Ahsoka" episode 7, "Dreams and Madness."
"Ahsoka" season 1 aired its penultimate episode on Disney+, and it brought a bonafide "Star Wars" legend along for the ride to help set things straight for Hera Syndulla. Before the title card even comes up, none other than C-3Po shows up in a truly crucial scene. More than a crowd-pleasing cameo from one of the franchise's most enduring characters, this was a meaningful and important appearance from the beloved droid.
The episode opens with Hera being put through an inquiry led by Hamato Xiono regarding her mission to help Ahsoka and Sabine, which was in violation of a direct order. Things were looking rather bleak as Hamato had it out for Hera. Then, in chimed the familiar voice of actor Anthony Daniels, who has been playing C-3Po since 1977, when "A New Hope" hit theaters. Star Wars’ most famous protocol droid C-3Po, and his actor, Anthony Daniels broke a live-action franchise record with his latest Disney+ cameo.
“Did you hear that?” The first words ever spoken in Star Wars and delivered by the iconic Anthony Daniels as C-3Po. And ever since, fans fell in love with his polite, loyal nature and comical bickering with best pal R2-D2.
Over the years, Daniels has been extremely insistent that he’d be the only actor to play Threepio. Because of this, he’s turned in showings in all nine Skywalker Saga films and many spin-offs and other roles.

Contains spoilers for Neighbours.
Last year’s announcement that Neighbours was ending prompted the return of its prodigal children. Not just the on-screen ones journeying to Ramsay Street to reunite with lost loves/burn down Lassiters/marry Paul Robinson, but also us – the Aussie soap’s lapsed viewers. We came back too, sticking one last hopeful hand into the cookie jar of nostalgia, hoping to feel… well, anything.
The only problem: Neighbours was unrecognisable. There was no Helen Daniels and Bouncer had long retired to the big farm in the sky. If you’d drifted away at some point between the third Lucy Robinson and the plane crash that turned Harold Bishop into the Erinsborough strangler, then this is for you. Here’s a handy guide to Neighbours’ current plots and characters. Never ask ‘Who’s Paige? again.

The most rudimentary research into the creative origins of the groundbreaking 1977 sci-fi flick "Star Wars" will reveal to the reader that creator George Lucas was inspired by "Flash Gordon" serials from the 1930s, as well as Akira Kurosawa's 1958 epic "The Hidden Fortress." Kurosawa's film famously opened with two clownish characters (Kamatari Fujiwara and Minoru Chiaki) who aimed to earn their fortune as samurai. After several misadventures, the peasants unwittingly become embroiled in a much larger plot about a missing princess (Misa Uehara), a war, and a brave protective warrior (Toshiro Mifune). "Star Wars" borrowed that film's structure, introducing audiences to its sci-fi action through the eyes (lenses?) of the robotic characters C-3Po (Anthony Daniels) and the non-humanoid R2-D2.

We all know Grantchester is an ensemble drama, but Season 8’s final two hours made us feel it. Yes, there were big questions to answer for the leading men: Would Will end his guilt-and-pill-fueled bender in time to see Bonnie give birth? Would Geordie retire? But we also got enough growth from Larry to suddenly ‘ship him and Miss Scott (let’s call them Scarry!), touching scenes between Leonard and Jack, and Leonard and Daniel, and multiple reminders that the actresses playing Cathy and Mrs. C have incredible comedic timing.

We have good news and bad news for fans of PBS’s Grantchester. The good news is that the British mystery drama has been renewed for a ninth season. The bad news is that the upcoming season will be the last for Tom Brittney, who has played crime-solving vicar Will Davenport since season 4.
‘Grantchester’ renewed for season 9
It’s only been a few weeks since Grantchester Season 8 premiered on PBS, but the show’s cast is already looking ahead to season 9. Filming recently began on the upcoming episodes, which will be Tom Brittney’s last. The actor – who took over as vicar after James Norton left the show in 2019 – has decided to move on.
“I’ve had the most incredible time playing Will Davenport for the last five years,” Brittney told PBS. “I got to solve crimes with my best friend, and work with the best cast and crew I could ever ask for.

Los Angeles, May 14 (Ians) Actress Jennifer Garner’s children would rather watch actor Ben Affleck’s movies.
The 51-year-old actress, who shares children Violet, 17, Seraphina, 14, and Samuel, 11, with Ben, has opened up that her kids don’t enjoy watching her movies and that they much prefer to see her ex-husband on screen, reports aceshowbiz.com.
“They don’t mind watching their dad, but they kind of want me to be their mom. They don’t want to see me upset and women cry more in what we do. And they don’t really want to see me in a romantic thing,” Jennifer – who has starred in films such as ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ and ‘Yes Day’ – told Allure magazine.
Jennifer – who was married to Ben between 2005 and 2018 – loves the challenge of motherhood. The actress always dreamed of having children, even if that meant having to adopt or becoming a foster parent.

The subtitle of “Alert: Missing Persons Unit” refers to a division of the Philadelphia Police where Nikki (Dania Ramirez) heads up an elite force of officers, well-trained in the art and science of tracking down victims of abduction and kidnapping. It’s a subject near to Nikki’s heart; six years ago, as explained in the first episode’s prologue, her son Keith was abducted at age 11, and never found. This tragedy contributed to the gradual disintegration of her marriage to Jason (Scott Caan), who was working overseas as a military contractor when his son was taken, and harbors guilt over not being there when it happened.
As the present-day timeline of “Alert” opens, Nikki and her new beau Mike (Ryan Broussard) have convinced Jason to come back to the Philly Pd to work with them directly in the Mpu. Jason has more difficulty signing Nikki’s long-overdue divorce...
