Abbott Elementary‘s third season closes its run on May 22, and in anticipation of the episode’s arrival, TV Insider caught up with star Tyler James Williams, who is teasing that when it comes to what’s in store, fans are “not ready.” As viewers saw in the previous installment, the Abbott crew took their students to a playground for an epic field trip that ended in a competition against the school led by Ava’s (Janelle James) frenemy Crystal (Tatyana Ali). At the same time, Jacob (Chris Perfetti) hinted to Gregory (Tyler James Williams) and Janine (Quinta Brunson) that romantic feelings remained between them. Disney/Gilles Mingasson Just as fans thought they’d get a romantic payoff, Mr. Morton (Jerry Minor) chimed in to warn about the dangers of dating a coworker as he and his wife deal with hardships over their unraveling marriage. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Abbott Elementary Season 3, Episode 9, “Alex.”] Abbott Elementary finally returned after a few weeks off the air and revealed a major career decision on the horizon for Janine Teagues (Quinta Brunson). As fans will recall, the teacher was selected to work at the district for an interim period as she implemented positive change at Abbott and schools all around it. And in the latest episode, “Alex,” she faced a crossroads as Superintendent Reynolds (Keegan-Michael Key) offered her a permanent position at the district. Disney/Gilles Mingasson This would mean Janine would no longer be a teacher at Abbott, which she ultimately decided to pursue at the beginning of the episode, announcing the choice to her colleagues, and things seemed pretty wrapped up until Gregory (Tyler James Williams) asked for her help. When one of Janine’s students ran into trouble for several unexcused absences, Gregory leaned on Janine to help him sort...

Abbott Elementary will still air on Wednesday March 6, but no new episode will be broadcast, and that’s for a very specific reason. As previously unveiled by ABC, a new episode of Abbott would broadcast following the 96th Academy Awards. In other words, the biggest night for movies is set to be the lead-in for Abbott‘s forthcoming episode, “Willard R. Abbott.” The installment will see the titular school deemed a Philadelphia historical landmark, much to the excitement of principal Ava (Janelle James) and Janine (Quinta Brunson), but Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph) and Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter) aren’t as impressed with the accolade. As the school plans a celebration in honor of its namesake, not everything will go as planned. (Credit: Disney/Gilles Mingasson) Joining Brunson, James, Ralph, Walter, Tyler James Williams, Chris Perfetti, and William Stanford Davis for the episode are guest stars June Diane Raphael and Jennifer Elise Cox.

The Abbott Elementary faculty are dealing with a hard truth in the latest episode, “Smoking,” as they realize a very important policy has flown under the radar when a student is caught smoking. As the staff comes together to review the drug policy, they realize it’s quite outdated, particularly when it comes to the banning of cigarettes as seen in TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek clip, above. “On the school’s website, we have no skateboarding, no vaping, no loitering, no horseplay, no weapons, no open flames, no bullying, and no gambling,” Ava (Janelle James) reports to her colleagues as she rattles off Abbott’s rule list. (Credit: Disney/Gilles Mingasson) “That last one’s just for students though, right?” Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter) asks quietly, but she doesn’t receive an answer. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Abbott Elementary Season 2.] Abbott Elementary‘s third season may not be on the horizon anytime soon amid ongoing writers and actors strikes, but we can’t help but wonder about what awaits us once it finally does return, mainly what’s next for Janine (Quinta Brunson) and Gregory (Tyler James Williams). The will-they-won’t-they duo finally admitted their feelings for one another in the Season 2 finale episode, “Franklin Institute,” but for viewers rooting them on at home, there wasn’t the romantic outcome they’d hoped for. Janine decided she needed to take time to be selfish and spend time by herself to maintain their friendship instead of potentially spoiling the promise and potential they have as a couple in the future. (Credit: ABC/Gilles Mingasson) While Gregory respects her wishes, it was clear he was disappointed by the outcome as the duo geared up for the upcoming end of year at Abbott.

It takes a village on “Abbott Elementary,” whether that means the show’s incredible background students creating the art that hangs on Abbott’s walls or department heads collaborating to express how characters are challenged by the situations they find themselves in.
While contemporary series — particularly comedies — don’t often get too stylized, that doesn’t mean character isn’t being expressed (and constantly tweaked). “Abbott Elementary” makeup department head Alisha L. Baijounas had a very specific Season 2 trajectory for Janine (show creator and star Quinta Brunson), and at least the hope for where she would end up by season’s end.
“I have a thing for Janine and Gregory’s relationship, so I kept hoping it was going to develop. And it was so funny having Quinta in the chair because I could always give her my opinion about how I wanted it to go,” Baijounas told IndieWire. “Getting...

A few main cast members have left ABC‘s The Rookie over five seasons. The Rookie introduced Titus Makin Jr.’s character Jackson West during the series premiere. He, Nathan Fillion’s John Nolan, and Melissa O’Neil’s Lucy Chen were all rookies assigned to the Mid-Wilshire station in the LAPD. Jackson also trained in the academy alongside Nolan and Chen, so they had a close bond.

‘Abbott Elementary’ Showrunners Look to Season 3 and Tease More of Janine and Gregory’s Romantic Arc
TV enthusiasts already know that “Abbott Elementary,” ABC’s mockumentary-style half-hour comedy from Quinta Brunson, is best in class. But there’s more to the Emmy-winning sitcom than meets the eye as it delves deeper into its setting within a Philadelphia public school system. In Season 2, “Abbott” has touched on topics from the issue of charter schools to a city-specific mural arts program (explored in Wednesday’s episode), and showrunners Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker previewed that there’s more to come as the series heads into its junior installment.
“We’re going into Season 3 with some ideas of an aspect — that I won’t spoil — of the school system that we want to explore a little bit more,” executive producer Schumacker told TheWrap. He added, laughing, “I think we’re approaching it like ‘The Wire’ — different facets of this ecosystem.”

Abbott Elementary -Abbott Elementary(ABC/Gilles Mingasson)-Quinta Brunson In its first season, Abbott Elementary not only earned critical acclaim (it won three Emmy Awards), but it also captured another title that might be even more significant: It was the “buzz series” of the 2021-22 TV season. Its cultural impact has already been significant, something that has made the show’s creator and star, Quinta Brunson, very proud. But she told us it also came with a certain sense of disbelief, and she talked about when she finally realized she had a legitimate hit show. Class is almost back in session for the students and teachers of Abbott Elementary as Season 2 kicks off Wednesday, September 21. In preparation for the incoming pupils, Tyler James Williams‘ Gregory Eddie is settling into his role as a full-time educator at the establishment after boarding the team as a long-term substitute in Season 1. For the actor, it’s been an interesting reversal of roles as it isn’t lost on Williams that he once played the student. “It was weird,” Williams admits of taking on the role of teacher, “But also, it’s really fulfilling to watch the kids get the spark for the first time.” The actor memorably broke big on TV in the 2000s with Everybody Hates Chris when he was in their place. Abbott Elementary won’t be back until later this fall, but its cast is eager to get back to work on the grade school-set comedy, which took ABC by storm this spring. TV Insider caught up with a few of the series’ principal players at the 2022 Disney Upfronts, where they discussed the effect this show has had on them personally as well as the influence they’ve seen among audiences. “It’s what I love to do,” says Tyler James Williams, who plays Abbott’s newest teacher, Gregory Eddie. “I’ve never been an actor who’s out to make a lot of money. I need to be [telling stories that] affect change in people’s hearts and minds. This is one of those shows.” (Credit: ABC/Gilles Mingasson) “If, when somebody goes to drop their kids off to school tomorrow, they’re a little nicer to the teachers because they understand them a little bit more.

When comedian Quinta Brunson began crafting her high-grade sitcom, Abbott Elementary, about beleaguered educators at a low-funded Philadelphia public elementary school, creating a lesson plan wasn’t a stretch. “I definitely pulled from my mom’s experiences as a teacher and her interactions with students,” says Brunson, who writes, produces, and stars as plucky second-grade teacher Janine Teagues. “I would check in with her and ask, ‘Does this sound like something relatable to you?’ And she’d say, ‘Oh yeah!’” (Credit: ABC/Gilles Mingasson) The freshman hit’s February 15 episode looks at a different kind of family — the Abbott work clan, which includes tense sub Gregory (Tyler James Williams), saucy principal Ava (Janelle James), and Janine’s fellow educators, even-keeled Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph), raucous Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter) and nervous Jacob (Chris Perfetti). The ever-enthusiastic Janine realizes she doesn’t know nearly enough about her colleagues — and “needs to rectify the issue immediately,...

Abbott Elementary is making the grade and setting a record at ABC as the freshman comedy became the network’s first to debut with quadruple ratings. This means that the series premiere episode has garnered four times the ratings since it first aired on the network. Helmed by creator, writer, and star Quinta Brunson, Abbott Elementary debuted in December to a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demo, pulling in 2.79 million viewers. (Credit: ABC/Gilles Mingasson) In the 35 days following Abbott Elementary‘s arrival though, the premiere episode has pulled in astronomic ratings across ABC’s linear and digital platforms. The 300% bump gave the debut a 2.4 rating among viewers 18-49 with a total of 7.1 million viewers. This increase from live-plus-same-day ratings to its MP35 (multiplatform 35 day) performance marks ABC’s largest percentage growth for any new comedy premiere. The series has clearly connected with viewers as it tells the story of a...

Hulu’s “Love, Simon” sequel series “Love, Victor” opens with a pointed Dm to the original film’s protagonist: “Screw you.”
The message comes from the franchise’s new main character, Victor Salazar, a 15-year-old high school student struggling to understand his sexuality in the midst of a move to a new town with his conservative, religious parents. He takes issue with the relative ease of Simon’s glossy coming out story and its overwhelmingly happy ending. Not everyone has it so easy, Victor insists.
The message feels like a direct answer to some of the criticism of the movie, which was also written by “Love, Victor” showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger (“This Is Us”), but it also serves as a statement of intent.
“The goal of the movie was to tell this really aspirational, glossy, fairy tale version of the coming out story because that had never existed at a studio level,...
