Opuntia
Logline: “Opuntia” is a feature documentary based on the writings of conquistador turned shaman Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, the first European explorer of Texas and one of the strangest figures in Us history.
Elevator Pitch:
Cabeza de Vaca got lost in Florida. Over the next eight years he wandered, naked, to the Pacific Ocean and became a shaman along the way. De Vaca is an unusual figure, so I’m using unconventional techniques to tell his story: I’m collaborating with a psychic and practicing mediumship to channel the spirit of de Vaca—who has chosen to communicate through the prickly pear cacti,...

America Lost and Found is a three film retrospective on Mubi of Peter Bo Rappmund's work. Psychohydrography (2010) starts playing on January 12, 2016, with Tectonics (2012) starting January 17 in the Us and 19th elsewhere, and Vulgar Fractions (2012) on January 26.PsychohydrographyAlong with an array of field recordings and non-diegetic aural effects, filmmaker Peter Bo Rappmund delicately integrates the sound of a skipping turntable needle at key junctures of his first feature, Psychohydrography (2010). Inspired by William Basinski’s The Disintegration Loops—a 4-disc collection of tape loops from the early-80s which slowly deteriorated in real-time as the experimental composer attempted to transfer the recordings from analog to digital storage space in September 2001—the film’s unique sonic accompaniment functions in these moments as both quasi-score and thematic augmentation to what can generally be described as an observational landscape film. The correlations between Basinski’s opus, now synonymous with the tragedy of 9/11, and Rappmund...

This week's announcement that Olivier Père, former programmer of Cannes's Directors' Fortnight, will be stepping down from his post at the helm of the Festival del Film Locarno marks the end of brief but important era for this film festival, one of the longest-running in the world. In just three years, Père has helped to put the annual event back on the festival map, drawing an annual influx of celebrities and industry-types for red-carpet world premieres, jury prizes, and lifetime achievement awards. Perhaps more than ever in its sixty-six-year history, Locarno is an important station on the fall festival circuit, forecasting the slates of Toronto and New York and providing useful international gateway for cinema from all over the world.
This year's festival featured a characteristically dizzying mix of international festival ephemera, an Otto Preminger retrospective, and much-heralded appearances by the likes of Kylie Minogue, Alain Delon, and Harry Belafonte on the festival's main stage,...

While Cannes’ Quinzaine struggles to reframe its identity, its former artistic director Olivier Père continues to impress in his new job at the Locarno Film Festival. On Wednesday, he and his programming team unveiled a lineup that is absolutely salivatory, a who’s who for high-minded cinephiles. Perhaps most impressive of all, he has managed to once again nudge the festival’s selection aesthetic even deeper into esoteric ‘experimental’ territory without seeming all that radical. More than any other festival, Locarno is the home for the edgy projects that are too sophisticated for Cannes, whose cold shoulder to avant-garde narrative filmmaking becomes more glaring with each passing year. Check out the complete line-up at the bottom of this page.

In its fifth year, the 2011 Korean American Film Festival New York (Kaffny) is bigger than ever. While mainly showcasing films that illustrate Korean American experiences, this year's program is as diverse as it is ambitious in its scope. Highlights include the first ever retrospective of Dai-sil Kim-Gibson - the pioneering Korean woman documentary filmmaker, Psychohydrography - a high-res 15,000 still image experimental film by Peter Bo Rappmund, Red Chapel - a Danish mock-doc comedy in North Korea, and The Boat - a Korean-Japanese co-production making its international premiere. The 49th annual Ann Arbor Film Festival is an epic celebration of experimental media that runs for six days on March 22-27. There’s so much great stuff screening this year, it makes one wonder what they’ll have left for their 50th anniversary next year!
A couple of the highlights include the highly anticipated feature-length documentary The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye by Marie Losier, which chronicles the pandrogynous love story between industrial music pioneer Genesis P-Orridge and his late wife. The film already made a big splash at the Berlinale earlier in the year and looks to be a major hit on the festival circuit this year.
Also not to be missed is a special retrospective of one of this year’s festival jury members, Vanessa Renwick, a longtime favorite on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film. Renwick will screen 10 of her quirky and artistic documentary portraits,...
