For Hedwig and the Angry Inch to make the leap from the relative obscurity of downtown theater to the bright lights of Broadway, the show needed a few touch-ups and strategic nips and tucks. The transformation clearly did the trick: The production racked up eight Tony nominations, winning four awards on Sunday, including Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical (Neil Patrick Harris) and Best Revival of a Musical. But according to Hedwig creators John Cameron Mitchell (writer-actor) and Stephen Trask (composer-lyricist), as well as the 2014 revival’s director, Michael Mayer, the story about a not-so-sweet transgender singer has been something of a work in progress ever since its 1998 Off-Broadway debut at the Jane Street Theater, and the tweaks keep on coming.“When I thought about redoing the show, I knew I didn't want to perform it again,” Mitchell, who originated the Hedwig role, told...

New York -- Stephen Trask is adamant. "It's not stunt casting!" the composer affirms over and over about bringing the musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch to Broadway with headliner Neil Patrick Harris. "There are plenty of people that if we just wanted to do stunt casting, we could have cast. Stunt casting is easy; we waited for the right guy." The drawn-out saga of courting Harris to take on the role of East German transgender band frontwoman in the cult musical, which premiered at the Westbeth Theatre in 1997 and transferred to Greenwich Village's Jane Street Theatre off Broadway

Two decades before Neil Patrick Harris dared to don a golden pair of go-go boots to portray the "internationally ignored song stylist" know as Hedwig Schmidt, John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask were perfecting the act on the New York City drag scene. In the wake of Hedwig and the Angry Inch's latest theatrical incarnation — which just racked up eight Tony nominations — we caught up with several of the creative minds who have contributed to Hedwig's past, present, and future to create an (appropriately) oral history.

There’s a new star on Broadway – well, “east of Broadway,” as she puts it – and she’s bringing some sex, sass, and serious noise to the Great White Way. She’s Hedwig, the bawdy wordsmith who heads up the punk band The Angry Inch. She’s lewd. She’s rude. And she’s played by a dude.
Stephen Trask and John Cameron Mitchell‘s Hedwig and the Angry Inch – which began previews at the Belasco last week – tells the bittersweet tale of Hansel-nee-Hedwig Schmidt, an East German “slip of a lady-boy” singer brought to the States by the interwoven forces of the U.S. military, a botched gender reassignment surgery, and old-school rock-and-roll. It’s part concert, part confessional, part cabaret. And in the capable hands of director Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening) and star Neil Patrick Harris, it makes for a rousing, uproarious, and moving night at the theater.

New York, February 12: Philip Seymour Hoffman was reportedly trapped in a love triangle before he died.
Law-enforcement sources have revealed that the 46-year-old actor had written in his personal journals, which were found in a police raid, that he was "caught in between" his relationship with longtime girlfriend Mimi O'Donnell and a new woman he had recently hooked up with, the New York Post reported.
The Oscar winning star had implied that O'Donnell had ousted him from their Jane Street apartment for hooking up with another woman.
Sources revealed that the 'Capote' star said in his diary that he felt.

Put on some makeup, turn up the eight-track, and pull the wig down from the shelf, because cult musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch is coming to Broadway for the very first time. But does a swanky new setting mean this version of the show will be kinder, gentler, and altogether less gritty?
In a word: nein. ”I don’t want the Broadway version of Hedwig to be all jazz hands,” says star Neil Patrick Harris, who plays the musical’s titular gender-bending rocker. “It needs to be rough around the edges at all times.”
That said, Harris and his cohort — director Michael Mayer,...

After years in the hinterland, Hedwig Schmidt (Neil Patrick Harris), the "internationally ignored song stylist," brings her forth-wall smashing saga, told in story and song, back to New York to set the record straight about her loves, her life, and the operation that left her with that "angry inch." Hedwig And The Angry Inch began off off Broadway at Westbeth and then ran over two years at the Jane Street Theatre beginning in February 1998. The musical won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical and both John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask won Obies. Rolling Stone called it “the Best Rock Musical Ever” in 2001. "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" talk at a "Smurfs 2" press junket? Why not? Neil Patrick Harris was clearly eager to talk about the forthcoming Broadway production during our recent sit-down about the family-oriented sequel, and his enthusiasm for taking on the title role - that of a transgendered rock singer living in East Berlin - came through in a pretty big way. "I saw 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch' when it was at the Jane Street Playhouse...gosh, twenty years ago or something," Harris told me of his first exposure to John Cameron Mitchell's acclaimed Off-Broadway production, which became the basis...

It is one of the universe’s pointless ironies that the horror in Colorado happened at the showing of a Batman movie. Despite the grimness in the Batman mythos, the character has neither been an advocate of violence, nor an apologist for it.
Not that I think it’s necessary, but let’s put out a few reminders anyway:
The only time Batman used a gun was in a very early story when the character was still in the process of forming.
Similarly: the mature Batman has eschewed lethal force of any kind.
A couple of decades ago, John Reisenbach, the son of a colleague, was shot to death on Jane Street in Greenwich Village – one of those senseless urban crimes that will probably never be solved. At the urging of Jenette Kahn, and under my editorship, John Ostrander wrote a fine Batman story about city streets and guns in...

The men of Bored to Death love each other. Not in the sharing a bed sense, though the characters played by Ted Danson, Jason Schwartzman and Zach Galifianakis do that in Season 3, which begins Monday. It’s the sort of brotherly obsession that allows men tender moments between the homoerotic jokes.
Schwartzman plays Jonathan Ames, a struggling novelist who moonlights as a private eye, bumbling through Brooklyn mysteries such as stolen sperm and missing screenplays. The character is loosely based on the author Jonathan Ames, who is the show’s creator and once drove a taxi while he was a struggling novelist. During a dinner Tuesday to kick off the new season at the Waverly Inn, Schwartzman said he knew within two minutes of meeting Ames and watching him break crackers into his soup that he had found a lifelong friend.
“Our goals kept changing over this lunch. First he...

From PatrickMcMullan.com.Lo, details about the scandalous hard-partying ways of another Goldman golden boy! Today’s New York Post reports on the disruptive nightlife of Goldman Sachs director Richard Kimball Jr. “There have been a lot of parties and a lot of noise. There have been complaints,” one neighbor of 99 Jane Street, where Kimball rents a $16 million penthouse, told the Post. Kimball is recently divorced from his wife, author Holly Peterson, and sources tell the tab that the split has spurred the “flowing champagne and legions of scantily clothed girls” who are now reportedly regulars at the West Village apartment. In terms of legendary Goldman Sachs social lives, Kimball’s may even outshine that of Fabrice Tourre, a London-based executive at the bank whose lavish bashes earned him the self-appointed nickname “Fabulous Fab.” A side-by-side analysis, below.
