Originally titled Recovery (which makes sense given that a key plot point in the film involves recovering a phone), Hide and Seek is one of those movies that made a splash online when first announced and then seemigly died a death – sneaking out onto DVD and VOD this week without any fanfare. Which, given how mundane this film is, may be the best possible outcome for the movie… For without the negativity of reviews, Darrell Wheat’s modern-day slasher movie may just find an audience.
Hide and Seek opens on a creepy family who, it turns out, have a girl trapped in a trunk in the basement! From what I can gather in the all-too-brief intro, is that...

With filmmaking and digital technology being so ubiquitous today, it becomes almost difficult to decide the difference between amateur stuff and real aspiring artists. Those budding filmmakers need not look further than the Brooklyn Film Festival, a festival founded in 1998 as a way to bring independent and ambitious filmmakers into the limelight. With the opportunity of having their work shown to an audience filled with movie lovers, critics, and anything in between, the Brooklyn Film Fest offers a once in a lifetime shot for those artists to truly make a mark on society and leave people yearning for more.
The 18th Brooklyn Film Festival took place from June 3 to 12 in Brooklyn (duh), sharing multiple venues between the Wythe Hotel and Windmill Studios. Youth In Oregon tells the story of Raymond Engersoll (Frank Langella), a former doctor who lives with his wife Estelle (Mary Kay Place) in the home of their daughter Kate Gleason (Christina Applegate) and her family. On the day of his eightieth birthday, Raymond receives the news that he will have to undergo another heart operation, one from which he’s unlikely to emerge, but without the operation, he will certainly die.
So, Raymond makes a decision: he’ll go back to his home in Oregon, where he can commit legal suicide with the assistance of a doctor. He doesn’t tell his family about the prognosis, but simply announces to them that he’s tired of living and has made arrangements. Circumstances collide so that Kate’s long-suffering husband Brian (Billy Crudup) ends up volunteering to drive Raymond and Estelle from New York to Oregon, under the mistaken belief...

Fair Weather Daydreams: Joseph’s Debut Mixes Surprising Energy into Vapid SoCo Slush
From its familiar yet nicely edited introductory credits, to its sweaty palmed electro enhanced climax, Max Joseph’s Bpm booming coming-of-age drama We Are Your Friends sometimes surprises by tapping into an energetic vein of youth on a precipice. But an intense focus on extra sensory visual flourishes meant to channel all the right vibes tends to distract from more important necessary developments, mainly the creation of empathetic characters. Instead, this tepid gaggle of immature San Fernando Valley bros comprises an achingly obnoxious focal point the film never recovers from, no matter how sincere lead Zac Efron desperately appeals to us as the mostly reasonable protagonist.
Cole (Efron) feels trapped in the sticky wasteland known as the San Fernando Valley. Estranged from his parents, he lives on the couch of best friend Mason (Johnny Weston). In a flash of sporadic voiceover,...

'Straight Outta Compton' poster. Weekend box office: 'Straight Outta Compton' to beat weak competitors, but still far from being top blockbuster directed by black filmmaker If you thought last weekend was bad at the U.S. and Canada box office, you should see what's in store for this weekend, Aug. 28-30, '15. For starters, only one movie, F. Gary Gray's sleeper hit Straight Outta Compton, is expected to earn more than $10 million. The rest – and that includes Zac Efron, Owen Wilson, Pierce Brosnan, and the Power of (Christian) Prayer – will perform quite powerlessly indeed. In case Straight Outta Compton reaches the box office gurus' estimated $15 million, it will get close to the $140 million mark. Bear in mind there's no guarantee that will happen; despite basically no competition, the drop-off rate of Gray's hip hopping film was steeper than expected last weekend. (See updated weekend box office estimates.) Now, some...

God help me, I liked The Zac Efron DJ Movie. A kind of variation on Saturday Night Fever set in the world of electronica, the film follows a young disc jockey torn between two worlds — with ambition and romance on the one side, and his loyal, scrappy friends on the other. It’s all big, dumb, broad strokes, with plot points visible from miles away. But it works where it matters: The music is fantastic, and the film invests you in its central relationship.Somewhat surprisingly, that relationship is not between aspiring DJ Cole Carter (Efron) and Sophie (Emily Ratajkowski), the beautiful Stanford dropout he falls for one night. Nor is it between Cole and his best pal, Mason (Jonny Weston, terrific), a wild-eyed free spirit always looking for an angle, or his other friends, actor–drug dealer Ollie (Shiloh Fernandez) and Squirrel (Alex Shaffer, in the Turtle role). Instead,...

We Are Your Friends presents a world populated by sex-and-cash-and-booze-crazed twenty-somethings who live to hear electronic music and dance the night away. Zach Effron stars as Cole, an aspiring “laptop DJ” in the San Fernando Valley. Cole has a soulless day job working for a sleazy predatory loan outfit headed by John Bernthal. Along with his three pals – aspiring actor/drug dealer Ollie (Shiloh Fernandez), loudmouth Mason (Jonny Weston), and thoughtful Squirrel (Alex Shaffer) – Cole spends his evenings promoting parties, spinning music, and ingesting drugs. A friendship develops between Cole and bigshot DJ James Reed (Wes Bentley), a fallen former ‘superstar’ of laptop DJ-ing, who takes him under his wing. Things get complicated when Cole falls for James’ bored younger girlfriend/assistant Sophie (Emily Rataikowski). Along the way, there are more drugs, tragedies, and romances that sizzle and fizzle.

At first glance “We Are Your Friends” may look like a shameless attempt for Hollywood to jump on the popularity of Edm (that stands for electronic dance music for everyone out there who remembers when it was called house or techno). Movie history is littered with terrible (and a few not-so terrible) films trying to make a buck off the trendy offerings of disco, punk, hip-hop, grunge and even good ol’ fashioned rock n’roll. While you can’t discount that potential marketing element in the film’s financing, director and director Max Joseph and his co-screenwriter Meaghan Oppenheimer have significantly larger aspirations. In fact, they have some teaching to do. Before we dive into that intriguing prospect, however, let’s meet the “Friends” in question. The film centers on four longtime friends who are marshaling their resources in an attempt to break free of the shackles of growing up...

Zac Efron is no stranger to movie musicals, but We Are Your Friends is a totally different beast: It's a movie about music—and it's definitely not kid-friendly. Efron plays Cole Carter, an aspiring DJ with dreams of making it big in the Edm (electronic dance music) world. A successful but troubled DJ, played by Wes Bentley, takes Efron under his wing, but things get tricky when the mentee falls for the mentor's girlfriend, played by Emily Ratajkowski. Efron is also challenged by his ties to his childhood crew-turned-collaborates—played by Jonny Weston, Shiloh Fernandez and Alex Shaffer. We Are Your Friends is a drama with flares of romance and comedy, and for those not up on the world of Edm,...

According to the guys in We Are You Friends, some of the best sushi in the world can be found in a strip mall in the Sacramento Valley. Sounds ridiculous, right? Well, we asked Zac Efron, Emily Ratajkowski (Gone Girl), and director Max Joseph (“Catfish”) – and they confirmed that, yes, the sushi really is that good.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a movie suffering from a more devastating identity crisis this year than Max Joseph’s We Are Your Friends - an inspirational story looking to capitalize on society’s current obsession with “Electronic Dance Music.” You’d think it’d be a poor man’s Entourage story, where sexy Zac Efron turns rags to riches by mastering GarageBand’s loop feature, but if that’s your assumption, you’re Deathly wrong.
Joseph and co-writer Meaghan Oppenheimer are all over the map with their sloppy attempt to dissect the house DJ culture, and even more egregious is their failure to inspire vocal individuality in the minds of young onlookers. It’s a movie that’s supposed to get your ambitious drive pumping, yet continually finds itself in need of resuscitation by any means possible (aka the objectification of Emily Ratajkowski). What can I say: eat,...

Ever since appearing as Gameskeeper Seneca Crane in The Hunger Games, Wes Bentley has been on a roll, taking on parts in small-scale projects like romance Hidden Moon, SXSW entry Things People Do and biopic Cesar Chavez, but expect the actor to step up his screen time in the coming months. Already this year, Bentley has shot roles in such buzzy films as Interstellar, Knight of Cups and Final Girl. Additionally, the actor has a supporting role on FX’s American Horror Story: Freak Show. Now, it’s been announced that Bentley’s next project will be We Are Your Friends, an Edm-centric drama which centers on an up-and-coming DJ.

La-based Continental Media has picked up worldwide sales rights to Ebf Productions’ upcoming thriller Recovery.
Kirby Bliss Blanton (pictured) and Samuel Larsen have been cast in the project, set to shoot in the summer.
Recovery centres on a high school graduate who searches for the smart phone she believes to be lost, all the while unaware she is the target of twisted kidnap plot.
Alex Shaffer and James Landry Hébert round out the key cast.
Darrell Wheat makes his feature directorial debut from a screenplay by Kyle Arrington. Eric B. Fleischman’s Ebf Productions produces with Sean Tabibian.
“With our increased addiction to technology, especially our smart phones, I wanted to explore the lengths people would go to retrieve something stolen… especially something with personal information on it, even when you know you’re in over your head,” said Wheat.

Anyone who owns an iPhone knows what a useful app "Find My iPhone" is. That shit comes in handy, and I've personally used it several times. That being said, filmmaker Darrell Wheat is ready to use it for nefarious purposes in his new movie, Recovery.
The flick, starting production this summer, stars Kirby Bliss Blanton (pictured; The Green Inferno, Project X), Samuel Larsen (pictured; “Glee”), Alex Shaffer and James Landry Hébert. Recovery was written by Wheat and Kyle Arrington (“The Originals”). Eric B. Fleischman’s Ebf Productions and Sean Tabibian are producing. Continental Media reps international rights.

Apologies to the five or so of you who read this with any regularity, there was no column last week. Day job woes and Christmas combined to stomp my ass into a fug of inactivity in terms of watching and writing about it. Therefore you get a bumper edition this week with two weeks’ worth of content.
In other big news House of Cards returns to Netflix with season two in February and the Turbo super-fast snail animated series, based on that DreamWorks film that recently came out, debuts in December. Now TV also has you covered during Christmas week by adding a new big title pretty much every day between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day, although apart from Elf on Now TV and a dedicated Christmas selection, there is a disturbing lack of Christmas themed films on the other services.
Someone add National Lampoons Christmas Vacation and Gremlins quick!

Before it was known as Cantuckee, Kimberly Levin’s Land of Tomorrow successfully found some coin via Kickstarter and then had stints at the Ifp Lab and the U.S. in Progress in ’12. Looking back at the fest’s history, specifically with regards to the U.S Dramatic Comp category, all it takes is one programmer to champion a micro-budgeted project and set it up against the big boy indies – and this sure feels like one of those Davids among Goliath. Featuring Joanne Kelly, Tom Bower and Alex Shaffer from Win Win and The Lifeguard fame, the drama will benefit tremendously from the presence of composers Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans.
