A romantic comedy about an Israeli-Palestinian couple based on the real life story of creators Nayef Hammoud and Gal Rosenbluth, the development series “Non-Issue” won the Paramount+ drama prize at this year’s Mia Market, which wrapped its ninth edition on an optimistic note. Of course, well before Friday’s closing award ceremony, the heartbreaking crisis in the Middle East cast a heavy pall over an otherwise ebullient audiovisual market, often informing conversations professional and otherwise.
While a number of industry execs were unable to travel from Israel, and though slated speaker Ari Folman was even forced to cancel a remote interview, attendance was otherwise up across the board. Oscar-winning director Gabriele Salvatores (“Mediterraneo”) is back behind the camera on “Napoli – New York,” a period immigration drama based on a story written for the screen by Federico Fellini.
Fellini co-wrote the tale of two Neapolitan kids who embark on a ship to New York to escape Italy’s early postwar poverty with his frequent collaborator Tullio Pinelli, a writer on the Italian maestro’s “La Dolce Vita” and “8 1/2,” as well as other titles.
Italian A-lister Pierfrancesco Favino stars as the chief officer of the ship which the two kids, named Carmine and Celestina, manage to board surreptitiously in the port of Naples, becoming clandestine passengers. The youngsters are on a mission to reach the U.S. where they dream of living with Celestina’s sister, who emigrated to New York two years earlier. Newcomers Dea Lanzaro e Antonio Guerra play the kids. (See first-look image above of Favino with the kids and Salvatores.

Dubai, Jan 29 (Ians) Rory McIlroy heads into Monday’s final round in a strong position to win a third Hero Dubai Desert Classic title after firing a sensational third-round 65 to open up a three-shot lead.
The World No.1 began the day two shots behind the halfway co-leaders but opened his third round with four successive birdies to hit the front at Emirates Golf Club.
The 2009 and 2015 champion was caught at the summit after making eight straight pars from the fifth but bounced back with a hat-trick of birdies at the 13th, 14th and 15th before another gain on the 17th handed him a huge lead.
But after hitting his approach at the 18th into the water, he finished with his only bogey of the day to go into the clubhouse on 15 under par, three clear of Englishmen Dan Bradbury and Callum Shinkwin.

Dubai Desert Classic: Three players finish at 68 at weather-hit opening day, Shubhankar yet to start
Dubai, Jan 26 (Ians) Thomas Pieters was the man to catch at the top of the leader board when the first round of the weather-affected opening day of the Dubai Desert Classic was suspended due to fading light on Thursday. But at 5-under through 15 holes he still had three more to play.
India’s lone man in the field, Shubhankar Sharma, who was due to start, did not get to start and will begin play on Friday morning. He could have a long day with his second round also due.
England’s Daniel Gavins had sat alongside Pieters when the hooter sounded but opted to finish up at the 18th in near-darkness and surrendered a bogey to join the large group on four under.
Gavins and countrymen Oliver Wilson and Matthew Jordan signed for 68s to set the early clubhouse target, while last week’s winner Victor Perez, Tommy Fleetwood and...

Combined with the half point they got from the first day, they stay unbeaten after two days two and a half points out of three.
The morning session was tied with both teams taking two and a half points each and in the afternoon it was still even till Robert MacIntyre, who had so far not lost a match, and Seamus Power lost 2&1 against the French-Italian pairing of Victor Perez and Guido Migliozzi.

Italy’s Cross Productions, in which Germany’s Beta Film has a stake, is shopping “Wolfsburg,” a high-end TV series which turns on an Italian immigrant who during the 1960s arrives in the German city of Wolfsburg, headquarters of Volkswagen Group, and morphs into a murderous werewolf.
The innovative skein, now in advanced development, is being set up as an Italian/German co-production. Beta included it in its Berlinale Series Market presentation. The plan is to unveil a €1 million ($1.1 million) lavish “Wolfsburg” proof-of-concept teaser/trailer during the Beta brunch at MipTV in Cannes next month.
“The basic idea is to mix genres by having horror, or rather fantasy, intersect with Italian neorealism,” said Rosario Rinaldo, chief of Cross. Cross recently made “The Hunter,” the fact-based show about a Palermo prosecutor with a killer instinct for tracking down top Mafiosi that’s made a local splash after premiering in 2018 at Canneseries and also travelled some.

While the 13th Slovak Queer Film Festival includes in its line up a later Solito’s queer jewel, let’s have a look at the director’s feature debut “The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros”. The film won over the children juries at the 56th Berlinale and left with the Special Mention from the Generation Kplus Children’s Jury, Grand Prix from the International Jury Kinderfilmfest, and also with the Teddy Award. By the way, that was the year when Sir Ian McKellen received the Honorary Golden Bear.
The international attention that the coming of age story of a “fairy” gay Maxi (Nathan Lopez) has received is, I dare to say, well deserved. “The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros” portrays the world of its main protagonist with a great sense for details, leaving his queerness as a mere one of them. Quite unlike what we could have seen in western films, being gay is a character trait,...

Pope Francis declared Popes John Xxiii and John Paul II saints before some 800,000 people on Sunday in an unprecedented ceremony made even more historic by the presence of emeritus Pope Benedict XVI in St. Peter's Square. Never before have a reigning pope and a retired pope celebrated Mass together in public, much less at an event honoring two of their most famous predecessors. Benedict's presence was a reflection of the balancing act that Francis envisioned when he decided to canonize John and John Paul together, showing the unity of the Catholic Church by honoring popes beloved by conservatives and progressives alike.

Is there a fourth victim? The police are still searching for a fourth girl who went missing six years ago from the same area in Ohio where three missing women were discovered on Monday. Ashley Summers was 14 when she vanished near her Cleveland home in 2007. She was last spotted about three miles away from the run-down residence owned by former school bus driver Ariel Castro, who is charged with kidnapping and raping Amanda Berry, 27, Michelle Knight, 32, and Gina DeJesus, about 23, who had apparently been held captive in the house since their teens or early 20s, police said."There is no...

Earlier this year we featured the trailer for an upcoming faux-documentary short called Project Kronos, that exploreed an attempt to achieve interstellar travel in a realistic way. The full short, running 14 minutes, has finally debuted and after watching it I have to feature it here. The biggest reason being the connection or hint this has to Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, additionally because it has a Contact-esque feel to it that actually gets exciting to watch as it continues into the later half. It's worth a quick view below. Project Kronos, written and directed by Hasraf 'HaZ' Dulull (his Vimeo), is a "documentary" following a mission to achieve interstellar travel, starring Noeleen Comiskey, Victor Perez, Wesley Nike and Georgina Blackledge. As the mission unfolds with extraordinary results, the scientists find themselves dealing with a much bigger agenda.
