Back in 1993, Hollywood had the shot of a lifetime. A shot at an opportunity to change the movie industry forever. They had all the ingredients: the rights to the highest-selling Nintendo video game and an untapped market greedy for more content. But they missed. The arrow didn’t even hit the board.
Super Mario Bros. was meant to be the first of many video game movie adaptations but instead has been relegated to the attic of our consciousness, the door only to be flung open when used to uphold the...

The WGA East’s second Showrunner Academy gets underway today, with the 31-member class taking part in a program designed to support television writer-producers, upper-level writers and new show creators in honing the skills necessary to become successful showrunners and TV industry leaders.
The Academy, which provides instruction from current showrunners and other industry professionals on a wide range of topics, is led by Diana Son and Frank Pugliese.
“Being a showrunner is so much more than being the creative voice of the show,” Son said in a statement. “It’s also managing a multimillion-dollar endeavor with over 100 employees. We’re bringing in accomplished and experienced showrunners who’re willing to share the breadth of their experience – the good, bad and the ugly – so new showrunners can have a head start on figuring out what kind of showrunner they’re going to be.

Historians and pop culture aficionados alike have been fascinated with the story of Yasuke for centuries - -the real life tale of the first Black Samurai, first gaining notoriety in 16th century feudal Japan. As the story goes, an African slave named Yasuke arrived and rewrote his destiny from being a serviceman of Jesuit missionaries during the Nanban trade to becoming a great warrior and eventually a legendary ronin.
Yasuke was a real person who existed, but the lore surrounding him has been told and retold countless times across a variety of manga, anime, and video games. Netflix debuted an anime series in 2021 featuring the voice of Lakeith Stanfield in the titular role. Now the streaming giant is pursuing a new adaptation starring Omar Sy of "Lupin" fame, who has an overall deal with the streamer. Netflix is producing another version of Yasuke and teaming up with some familiar collaborators to do it.
The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively learned that Lupin star Omar Sy will play the real-life legend, an African man brought to feudal Japan under enslavement who became the country’s first non-Japanese samurai, in a new live-action series. The five-part event series will be penned by military vet-turned-screenwriter Nick Jones Jr., who served as head writer for the streamer’s Yasuke anime adaptation last year.
“Getting a chance to finally bring Yasuke’s legendary true story to life has been a dream of mine ever since I served in Japan as a Marine,” Jones said in a statement.
Jones and Sy will both serve as executive producers alongside 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy and Josh Barry as well as Significant Productions’ Forest Whitaker and Nina Yang Bongiovi.

Exclusive: Concussion filmmaker Peter Landesman will adapt and direct Scout Comics’ comic series The Recount into a feature film for Don Handfield’s Motor Content and Jonathan Kadin’s KadinCreative. Nick Jones Jr. will co-write with Landesman.
The fictional political thriller written by U.S. army veteran Jonathan Hedrick, was published by Scout Comics in November last year and is set in an unsettling, yet recognizable American political climate. The material is described as having the political intrigue of House of Cards blended with the horror of The Purge.
In the series, the U.S. President is assassinated by one of his own security detail. A Secret Service agent must then protect the Vice President at all costs from a vast, dangerous conspiracy. With nowhere to turn and no one to trust, these two women with completely opposing beliefs are forced to work together to fight back and preserve what’s left of American democracy.

John Wells has endorsed the dissident candidates the Writers Guild of America West, which is embroiled in a bitter dispute with Hollywood agents.
Wells, a prominent showrunner and two-time WGA West president, issued the statement of support in an email Sunday to members. He urged members to vote for the Writers Forward Together slate, which is running on a platform that highlights the need for the WGA to resume negotiations with the major agencies after staying away from talks since early June. Ballots went out Aug. 29 to about 10,000 members with results announced Sept. 16.
The dissidents have asserted that the WGA will be at a disadvantage should it go into negotiations next year with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers without an agency franchise deal. Phyllis Nagy is heading the slate and challenging current WGA West president David Goodman.

Calling on the WGA to return to the bargaining table with the Association of Talent Agents, former WGA West president John Wells announced today that he’s supporting Phyllis Nagy for president of the guild, as well as her entire slate of running mates. Nagy is seeking to unseat WGA West president David A. Goodman. Election ballots went out last Thursday and will be counted on Sept. 16.
“It’s time to return to the negotiating table with the Ata, pound out full disclosure and transparency for our members involved in packaging and demand the agencies fully divest themselves of their affiliated content companies,” he said in a message to the guild’s members today. “The candidates I’m supporting are committed to this approach. That’s why I’m supporting them. This isn’t caving, this is defining clear, and achievable goals in a negotiation.”

Oscar-nominated screenwriter Nicholas Kazan has warned that the leaders of the Writers Guild of America may tear apart the union.
Kazan, who is running for the WGA West board, issued the prediction in an email Monday to members following the Aug. 16 that the announcement that the WGA would start holding tribunals to punish writers who are not following the guild directive to fire agents if the agents have not agreed to follow the WGA’s Code of Conduct — which bans packaging fees and affiliate productions.
“This disaster was both inevitable and avoidable,” Kazan said. “Inevitable once the Guild embarked on its present course…and avoidable if the same legitimate issues had been dealt with in a different, less confrontational and more reasoned, manner. If trials are held and hundreds of writers are punished…or they abandon the Guild to avoid a nasty trial…the WGA will be defanged, its power diminished,...

Opposition candidate Nick Jones Jr. has condemned the tactics of the Writers Guild of America in its battle against Hollywood agents.
“I believe we’ve disrupted ourselves more than we’ve disrupted the Big 4,” he said.
Jones, who’s running for the secretary-treasurer post as part of Phyllis Nagy’s Writers Forward Together slate, is running on a platform that the WGA needs to get back to the bargaining table after two months of staying away — particularly with Wme, CAA, UTA and ICM Partners.
The contest, which also includes races for president and eight board seats, is viewed as a referendum on the WGA’s hard-nosed approach versus more accommodating tactics. Election results will be announced on Sept. 16.

Nick Jones Jr., the opposition candidate for secretary-treasurer of the WGA West, is a Marine Corps veteran who said in a statement today that the guild has been outflanked in its ongoing battle with Hollywood’s talent agents.
“I was taught in the military to have an appreciation of the enemy,” he said. “Know their strengths. Know their weaknesses. Once we gain an advantage, we exploit it. We use it to create new opportunities. We then exploit those opportunities to create others, shaping the flow of action to our advantage.”

Oscar-nominated screenwriter Nicholas Kazan has attacked leaders of the Writers Guild of America for “vitriol” in their hardline stance on Hollywood agents.
“This Guild is in crisis,” he said in an email sent Monday to members. “It’s not the crisis you think…it’s not whether or how to negotiate with the Ata or the individual talent agencies. The election for the Writers Guild of America West remains heated with dissidents attacking the guild’s hardline stance on Hollywood agents.

Fuchs, who is seeking a seat on the WGA West board, hasa story credit on “Wonder Woman,” a shared screenplay credit for “Ice Age: Continental Drift” and is a co-producer for “It: Chapter 2.”

Screenwriter Jason Fuchs has a message for Oscar-winning screenwriter Adam McKay: “Dissent is not disloyalty.” Fuchs, who’s running for the WGA board as opposition leader Phyllis Nagy’s running mate, took issue with McKay’s recent statement that opponents of the guild’s leadership should not be making public comments in opposition to the guild’s four-month standoff with Hollywood’s talent agents.
“The WGA is a union,” McKay tweeted the other day. “The whole reason they call a ‘union’ a union is because our strength comes entirely from staying united. If members disagree that’s fine, but it should stay in house. Seems pretty basic but a few people seem to have forgotten.”
“When he refers to ‘a few people,’ to be clear, he’s talking about me,” Fuchs said in a statement posted on the opposition slate’s website. “He’s talking about Phyllis Nagy who is running for president.

A fourth candidate for the Writers Guild of America West’s board has dropped out of the race in order to support the guild’s hardline stance on Hollywood agents.
Joshua Hale Fialkov made the announcement Friday, three days after Rob Forman, Ed Herro and Chris Roessner all announced they had withdrawn from the contest for the same reason. The four dropouts mean that there are now 17 candidates for eight open board seats in a contest that’s viewed as a referendum on the WGA’s hard-nosed approach. Election results will be announced on Sept. 16.
Craig Mazin dropped out of the election last week as a vice presidential candidate due to concerns over a family member’s health. Mazin was a running mate with Phyllis Nagy, who is challenging WGA West president David Goodman on a platform that the WGA needs to get back to the bargaining table after six weeks of staying away.

The four-month stalemate between the Writers Guild of America and Hollywood’s talent agencies is generating plenty of passion among guild candidates.
Wednesday night’s WGA West membership meeting at the WGA Theatre in Beverly Hills provoked accusations of electioneering — using guild resources for campaigning — against President David Goodman, who is seeking re-election, and WGA West Executive Director David Young. Goodman is advocating a hardline approach to achieve the WGA’s goals of banning agency packaging fees and affiliate production.
Opposition board candidates Rasheed Newson and Ayelet Waldman made the claims, which Goodman emphatically denied.
“What David Goodman and David Young are doing tonight at the general meeting is a violation of the law,” tweeted Waldman. “Electioneering at guild events is specifically not allowed. Shame on them! In fact, many who are there reported their disgust at the electioneering.”
Newson said in a Tweet, “This was meant to be an information meeting.

“Chernobyl” writer-creator Craig Mazin, vocal in his opposition to the Writers Guild of America‘s current strategy in its battle with talent agencies, announced Wednesday that’s he’s dropping out of the running for the union’s second-in-command due to a family medical issue.
Mazin was running for vice president as part of a slate of WGA West executive candidates led by “Carol” scribe and presidential hopeful Phyllis Nagy. The group takes issue with the WGA’s current position in the agency fight: Mazin contends that union leadership ought to be open to negotiating a compromise, rather than see the entire practice of packaging as a non-starter.
“I am regrettably withdrawing from the race for vice president of the Wgaw due to a medical issue with an immediate family member that will require more of my attention and care in the next year than I had expected,” Mazin said...

“Chernobyl” creator Craig Mazin announced that he would withdraw from the upcoming leadership elections for the Writers Guild of America on Wednesday, citing “a medical issue with an immediate family member” in a statement sent by the Guild.
Mazin had been running for vice president against incumbent Marjorie David and Carl Gottlieb. Mazin has declined to comment beyond his statement.

Updated with statement from Phyllis Nagy and Nick Jones Jr.: Craig Mazin, the Emmy-nominated writer-creator of HBO’s Chernobyl, has dropped out of the race for vice president of the WGA West.

Craig Mazin, who was running for vice president of the Writers Guild of America West, has withdrawn from the contest due to a family issue.
Mazin was running as part of the Writers for Negotiation slate, which opposes the current stalemate between the WGA and Hollywood agencies. He made the announcement Wednesday afternoon in an email to guild members.

Vying to steer the Writers Guild of America, there’s a slate of high-profile dissident candidates. Among them is “Chernobyl” writer-creator Craig Mazin, who recognizes that his proposed strategy in the screenwriters’ battle against talent agencies — compromising on the controversial practice of packaging — isn’t exactly sexy.
“You generally get the best outcome if you can think from your point of view, and from the other person’s point of view. You’ll actually do better than if you shut the other person’s point of view off and hold your breath,” he told IndieWire. “It’s so pragmatic. It’s so bottom-line oriented that it doesn’t necessarily quicken the pulse.”

Updated with Nagy’s response: The WGA election debate has kicked off with a fiery exchange among a trio of prominent writers — top showrunner and former WGA Negotiating Committee member Shawn Ryan, Chernobyl creator and former Negotiating Committee member Craig Mazin and Carol screenwriter Phyllis Nagy.
Nagy and Mazin are running for WGA West President and Vice President, respectively, on a platform calling for a strategy shift in the guild’s negotiation with the Association of Talent Agents. Their position was endorsed on Friday by more than 300 prominent film and TV writers, including a slew of A-list showrunners.
Ryan, known for his vocal support of the current WGA strategy toward agencies and his efforts to help up-and-coming scribes find jobs without agents, was not among those who signed the open letter in support of Nagy, Mazin and secretary-treasurer candidate Nick Jones Jr. Instead, over the weekend he sent out an...

Shonda Rhimes, Ryan Murphy, Ava DuVernay, Greg Berlanti, Mark Boal and John Wells are among the notable showrunners and screenwriters who have signed an open letter urging the WGA to move toward a negotiated settlement to end the impasse with Hollywood’s largest talent agencies.
The signatories are throwing their support in the upcoming WGA West elections behind Phyllis Nagy, a screenwriter who is challenging incumbent David Goodman. Nagy has been critical of the guild leadership’s handling of the campaign, which led to more than 7,000 writers firing their agents in mid-April.
The letter marks the most public statement to date by WGA members who have been increasingly frustrated with the guild’s position in the battle to ban talent agents from collecting packaging fees or having agency-affiliated production entities. A number of the signers also signed a public letter of support for the guild’s position back in March...

Phyllis Nagy has joined the race for president of the WGA West just hours before the deadline. Shia Labeouf's newest film really didn't hit in the U.K.
Man Down, which also stars Kate Mara, Gary Oldman and Jai Courtney, sold just three tickets across the pond, bringing in $26, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The box office is astonishingly low, even when considering the film only screened in one theater, and could be a result of poor reviews (it currently has a 15% score on Rotten Tomatoes), and the subject of the movie being more American-centered -- a U.S. soldier suffering Ptsd. For Shia Labeouf's latest military drama, Man Down, in which he stars as a U.S. Marine, the actor decided to add some realism to a scene in which he gets pepper sprayed in the face by opting to use real pepper spray.
Et's Ashley Crossan caught up with Labeouf at the premiere of Man Down in Los Angeles on Wednesday where he opened up about why he chose to suffer for the scene.
"I'm scared I'm not good enough," the outspoken 30-year-old star admitted. "It's like when you go bowling, [and] you put up the bumpers. You might be able to hit a strike without the bumpers but why not put the bumpers up?"
"The guy who did it to me, this guy named Nick Jones Jr., who is my heart, he is the Marine I went through this whole thing with," Labeouf added. "He knew how to do it in a safe way, so it just...

Special thanks for Cbm's Greengo for the heads up Nick Jones Jr. is a relatively unknown actor who was bestowed the honor of being John Stewart in Ryan Reynold's superhero flop. The ex-marine has been in only a handful of films, in bit parts. Nick is a big comic book fan, and was excitedly doing interviews for Green Lantern expecting to see his brief appearance as a pre-superhero John Stewart. Maybe it was good that his scenes were cut, so that the film didn't ruin two versions of Green Lanterns. Would I have liked to have seen a John Stewart cameo? Yes, and it doesn't surprise me that they cut the Easter egg since that movie made bad decision after bad decision. At least the movie was consistently bad. Maybe they can reboot the franchise and approach it from the perspective of John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, or Guy Gardner. That...

Critical disputes rage on in the Twitter feed this week over "Green Lantern." Adam Hughes gave it a thumbs up, and Kody Chamberlain is stoked to see actor Nick Jones play John Stewart, but Chris Burnham has at least one big costume concern, and Mark Millar and Alejandro Arbona both sound a little scared.
Gail Simone, meanwhile, is still caught up on "Thor." Some of the tweets she contributed to a thread about the Son of Asgard's naughty bits may not be safe for work, but the one included below, as well as Ben McCool's reaction to "X-Men: First Class" and Rick Remender's thoughts on professionalism have been safely retweeted for your reading pleasure.

At the risk of being stoned to death, we're not quite sure about the upcoming 'Green Lantern.' Call us old-fashioned, but maybe some comic book characters are better left on paper, rather than spoiling our childhood memories on the big screen. Our first impressions of the film -- albeit from an early trailer whose special effects appeared, shall we say, unfinished -- were 1) beyond geeky, and 2) Ryan Reynolds in green tights?
Some of the folks over at Cinema Blend had the same thoughts, but they slowly changed their minds after seeing more of the trailers for the June 17 release, which we herewith present for you after the jump. Apparently some of the action sequences -- in particular the colossal battle with Parallax -- wiped out the silly green images from some of the earlier clips.

Comicpalooza definitely had a little bit of everything for everyone, including some of the cast from Green Lantern. I got to hangout and even clown around with Nick Jones Jr. who plays Jon Stewart and Deke Anderson who plays 4 Star General Caven in the big screen DC comic book adaptation this summer. I got to ask just a few questions to each of them and wanted to share with our Tyrants!
The video interviews are short but we had a lot of fun doing them. I guess I'll call these video interviews part of my Versus line of interviews now and don't even listen to me counting them down. Green Lantern hits theaters on June 17th, enjoy!

In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan. Here's an interview I found with Nick Jones, who's long been rumored to star in Green Lantern as John Stewart, where he talks a bit about his involvement with Green Lantern. He also touches on Ryan Reynolds, the CGI costume, and possible Gl sequels. Shawn S. Lealos: We're you a Green Lantern fan in specific? Nick Jones: Not a Green Lantern fan in specific.

Comicpalooza, the largest comic-con/pop culture event in Texas, is taking place this weekend — but that hasn't stopped the organizers from adding awesome new guests and events to the already-stuffed schedule.
Actress Meaghan Rath, from the hit Syfy series Being Human, has just joined the roster of actors, which already includes celebrities such as Edward James Olmos (Battlestar Galactica), Sam Trammell (True Blood), Tony Todd (Candyman), Sean Maher (Firefly/Serenity), Peter Mayhew (Star Wars), Nick Jones (Green Lantern), Jeremy Bulloch (Star Wars) and Marina Sirtis (Star Trek).
For all you Harry Potter devotees, actor Devon Murray has also been added to the guest list. Apparently, Murray is known as Seamus Finnegan in the hallowed halls of Hogwarts. (I've never actually seen a Harry Potter flick, so I have to take their word on this one.)
And fans of sci-fi and fantasy fiction will be thrilled by the addition of Tad Williams,...
