Tuesday was not a good day for Ronna McDaniel — or, is it Ronna Romney McDaniel again, as she now admits the 2020 election was not stolen? She went from a high-profile gig on NBC to no gig and no agent, as CAA also dropped her.
It was also a bad day for NBC News Group chairman Cesar Conde, who found it necessary to “personally apologize to our team members who felt we let them down.” Conde didn’t exactly fall on his sword by himself; he mentioned in his letter to staff that this was “a collective recommendation by some members of our leadership team.” But he acknowledged that the buck stopped with him.
At least McDaniel is getting a payout. So, no harm, no foul, right? Well, not exactly. This was hardly the simple loss of a job, as the fallout at NBC has made it impossible for her to...

Former Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel has only appeared once on NBC News programming in her new capacity as a political news contributor, and already, senior executives are gathering to conduct a review.
Top executives from NBC News were expected to meet Tuesday to hash out the growing controversy around her recent hire, according to two people familiar with the matter, in a bid to stop a growing insurrection by the NBCUniversal unit’s editorial staff. In recent days, prominent anchors ranging from Chuck Todd to Rachel Maddow have spoken out against the hire on NBC News’ “Meet The Press” as well as on MSNBC, charging NBC News executives with giving a platform to McDaniel despite her efforts to help former President Donald Trump dismiss the integrity of the 2020 presidential election.

Simu Liu is going back to the future. Well, like, five minutes into the future.
Peacock has given a straight-to-series order for an untitled espionage series starring Liu, in which the “Barbie” actor will play first-generation-American intelligence analyst Alexander Hale. He realizes his brain has been hacked, giving the perpetrators access to everything he sees and hears.
James Wan is among the executive producers on the series, which was written and created by Thomas Brandon (“Legacies”). Other EPs on the project include Michael Clear and Rob Hackett from Wan’s Atomic Monster. Danielle Bozzone will oversee the project for the production company, which recently merged with Jason Blum’s Blumhouse.
Wan/Atomic Monster and UCP/Peacock are already collaborating on a contemporary horror thriller now titled “Teacup.” Ian McCulloch is writing that one, and executive producing alongside Wan.

‘The Disappearance of Shere Hite’ Trailer: Dakota Johnson Narrates an Elusive Sex Reseacher’s Legacy
After publishing “The Hite Report” in 1976, sex researcher Shere Hite all but vanished from the public eye. Now, thanks to documentarian Nicole Newnham and narrator/executive producer Dakota Johnson, Hite’s legacy is on full display.
“The Disappearance of Shere Hite,” which premiered at Sundance 2023, is written and directed by Oscar-nominated “Crip Cramp” filmmaker Newnham.
The bestselling 1976 book “The Hite Report” liberated the female orgasm by revealing the private experiences of 3,000 anonymous survey respondents. Shere Hite’s findings rocked the establishment, presaged current conversations about gender and sexuality, and made her a target of the patriarchy. Actress Johnson narrates the documentary, which charts Hite’s explosive rise to fame and then mysterious retreat, executive produces through her TeaTime Pictures banner. The film was also just nominated for three Critics Choice Documentary Awards: Best Archival Documentary, Best Biographical Documentary, and Best Narration.
As Hite herself says in the trailer, “Equality isn’t so dangerous to me.

A group of writers penned an open letter calling out the Writers Guild of America for remaining silent following the Israel-Hamas War, despite SAG-AFTRA and the Directors Guild of America putting out statements denouncing the Hamas terrorist attacks.
The writers — including Eli Roth, Jenji Kohan, Jerry Seinfeld, Amy Sherman-Palladino and many more — pointed out that the WGA has always supported causes like Black Lives Matter and the #MeToo movement.
“But when terrorists invaded Israel to murder, rape, and kidnap Jews…the Guild stayed silent,” the letter reads. “We are a group of screenwriters who wish to clearly and forcefully condemn the heinous crimes committed by Hamas against innocent civilians.”
The letter continues, “The conflict between Israel and the Palestinian people is complex and full of nuance, but the crimes committed on October 7th were simple and cruel. If we cannot stand up to call it what it is — a monstrous...

John Lansing, the president and CEO of NPR, said on Tuesday that he is retiring at the end of the year.

Neeraj Khemlani is stepping down as the president and co-head of CBS News and Stations.
In a memo to staffers on Sunday, Khemlani said that he had signed a first look deal with the network to develop documentaries, scripted series and books for Simon & Schuster.
“It’s an opportunity that will allow me to write, report and develop stories that I’ve long wanted to pursue,” he wrote.
George Cheeks, the president and CEO of CBS Entertainment Group, said that he will update staffers soon with information about new leadership and structure for the news division. That may come as soon as Monday, and there is some speculation that Wendy McMahon, who was named president and co-head of CBS News and Stations in 2021, will take on a new or expanded role. Khemlani and McMahon were named to their posts in a restructuring that combined two divisions of the company.

The headlines coming out of CBS News will soon be guided by a new executive.
Neeraj Khemlani, who arrived at the Paramount Global unit in 2021 to oversee CBS News and local stations along with Wendy McMahon, is leaving his role running the unit that produces “60 Minutes,” “CBS Evening News” and “Face The Nation,” among other programs. Khemlani told CBS News staffers Sunday that he has decided to exit and will instead pursue a new multi-year first-look deal with CBS that has him developing content including books for Simon & Schuster, documentaries and scripted series.
Many senior news executives and anchors sign contracts for three years or more. Khemlani has during a two-years-plus tenure helped to rework CBS News’ morning programming; eliminate divisions between the linear news staff and CBS News streaming operations; bolster its investigative unit; and inject new talent into the famously insular division, including Robert Costa, Natalie Morales and Cecilia Vega.

Netflix’s Zero Day, Robert De Niro’s first scripted TV role, has shut down production amid the ongoing strike by the Writers Guild of America.
The six-episode drama is being directed and exec produced by Lesli Linka Glatter, who helms all the episodes. Glatter is also the president of the Directors Guild, which has already reached a tentative deal with the studios and streamers. The guild’s 19,000 members are now voting on whether to ratify the agreement with the AMPTP or reject the deal and send the DGA back to the bargaining table.
Sources say production on Zero Day started Monday on location in New York, where it was greeted with picketing members of the Writers Guild. Glatter, it’s worth noting, and the DGA secured its tentative deal with the AMPTP late Saturday night.

The Netflix series “Zero Day,” which marks Robert De Niro’s first regular television role, has shut down production, Variety has learned from sources.
The series had recently begun production in New York but is now on hold amid the ongoing writers’ strike. There is currently no set date for work to resume on the show.
Netflix declined to comment.
Variety exclusively reported that the show was ordered to series at Netflix back in March. Per the official logline, “Zero Day” “asks the question on everyone’s mind — how do we find truth in a world in crisis, one seemingly being torn apart by forces outside our control? And in an era rife with conspiracy theory and subterfuge, how much of those forces are products of our own doing, perhaps even of our own imagining?”
Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Plemons, Joan Allen, and Connie Britton all joined De Niro in the series back in April.

Exclusive: Robert De Niro is attached to star in a Billy Ray-penned crime drama series that is in the works at Paramount+.
The two-time Oscar winner will lead Bobby Meritorious, an original series that comes from Paramount Television Studios. Paramount made the commitment to develop the project after winning out a competitive situation.
It marks De Niro’s second TV project to emerge in a matter of weeks after conspiracy thriller Zero Day, from Eric Newman, landed a limited series order at Netflix.
The series is set amid the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, which is a sovereign kingdom with seemingly unlimited power and scope. When NBC News announced in January that Hallie Jackson, its senior Washington correspondent, would leave the anchoring duties she had held at MSNBC since 2016, some eyebrows rose. But NBC News was chasing something else on the rise: Digital audiences.
Since Jackson began anchoring a late-afternoon hour on NBC News Now in December 2021, a growing audience has sought her out. Viewership surged 108% over the course of a year. “You don’t see those numbers in many businesses,” says Janelle Rodriguez, the NBC News executive vice president who oversees the streaming outlet, in an interview. “When you see that level of audience increase, you know you are on to something,” On Monday, Jackson will double her time on her program, “Hallie Jackson Now,” to two hours, which means she will hold forth from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

In June, Focus Features will release Oscar-nominated director Julie Cohen’s “Every Body,” a documentary about three intersex individuals.
It is estimated that up to 1.7% of the world’s population is born with intersex traits, according to the U.N.’s Human Rights Office. The term intersex is used to describe people born with physical sex characteristics that do not fit typical definitions of male or female. These traits may be evident at birth, emerge at puberty, or become apparent later in life.
Produced in partnership with NBC News Studios, “Every Body” investigates the lives of actor and screenwriter River Gallo (they/them), political consultant Alicia Roth Weigel (she/they), and Ph.D. student Sean Saifa Wall (he/him). The docu examines how all three subjects moved from childhoods marked by shame, secrecy, and non-consensual surgeries to thriving adulthoods after each set aside medical advice to keep their bodies a...

Eric Newman, who produced Narcos among many other things, created the show, while Jackie's Noah Oppenheim will write and run it. Lesli Linka Glatter is aboard to direct.

Netflix is getting back in the Robert De Niro business -- but this time, it won't be for a big-budget movie. Instead, the streaming service has partnered with the legendary actor for his very first TV series in the form of a conspiracy thriller titled "Zero Day." The limited series, which will run six episodes, was created by Noah Oppenheim ("Jackie"), who will serve as an executive producer alongside Eric Newman and De Niro.
De Niro, known for his roles in classics such as "Heat," "The Godfather Part II," and "Goodfellas," among many, many others, previously teamed with Netflix on Martin Scorsese's ambitious "The Irishman." Clearly, that experience went well enough for him to finally jump into the world of TV after a decades-long career that dates back to the '70s. As for what the show is about? The synopsis reads as follows:

Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland, Mad Men) has signed on to direct all six installments.
“I am a lifelong fan of Robert De Niro. To have him as a producing partner and star in this show is beyond my wildest dreams,” Newman said in a statement. “And Lesli Linka Glatter has directed so many of my favorite episodes of television; she was our clear first choice to direct this show. Netflix has ordered the limited series “Zero Day” starring Robert De Niro in his first regular television role, Variety has learned exclusively.
In addition, Lesli Linka Glatter has boarded the show and will direct and executive produce all six episodes. Variety previously reported that the series was in development at Netflix in November. It hails from writers and executive producers Eric Newman and Noah Oppenheim.

Sundance 2023: ‘The Disappearance of Shere Hite’ Directed by Nicole Newnham
U.S. Documentary Competition
The Hite Report, a groundbreaking study of female sexuality, remains one of the bestselling books of all time since its publication in 1976. The Hite Report brought the female orgasm out of unspoken shadows into the light of day by revealing the most private experiences of thousands of anonymous survey respondents. Shere Hite’s findings rocked the American establishment and presaged current conversations about gender and sex.
Drawn from anonymous survey responses, the book challenged restrictive conceptions of sex and opened a dialogue in popular culture around women’s pleasure. Its charismatic author, Shere Hite, a feminist sex researcher and former model, became the public messenger of women’s secret confessions. With each subsequent bestseller, she engaged television titans in unforgettably explicit debates about sexuality while suffering the backlash her controversial findings provoked. But who remembers Shere Hite today? What led to her erasure?
The takeaway of The Hite Report was that female expression of sexuality should not be defined by patriarchal power. This idea deeply offended the male establishment and consequently, the media made as much of their wounded ideas of themselves as of the book itself whose authentic and anonymous findings were treated with intense controversy.
The astonishing beauty of Shere Hite herself lies outside of the cliche perameters of the “scholarly” (i.e., “homely) woman. And so her methodical research was called “unscientific” and was called into question (and answered smartly by her). Her background as a working-class, bisexual, former nude model with photographs appearing in Playboy did not sit well with the offended and offensive men who interviewed her on top TV shows after the book became a runaway success. All of her many identities are displayed in the movie.
Digging into exclusive archives, as well as Hite’s personal journals and the original survey responses, filmmaker Nicole Newnham transports viewers back to the 70s, a time of great societal transformation around sexuality (See Fairyland, about queer life in San Francisco, also playing here in Sundance, for another take on the 70s and Food and Country about the coming of age of California cuisine in the 70s under the guiding hands of Ruth Reichl and Alice Waters of Chez Panisse). Newnham’s revelatory portrait brings us to reconsider a pioneer who broke the ground for our current conversations about gender, sexuality, and autonomy. Her story also is a timely, cautionary tale of what too often happens to women who dare speak out.
Nicole Newnham is an Oscar-nominated, Emmy-winning documentary director and producer and four-time Sundance alum. She co-directed Crip Camp (2020) with Jim LeBrecht. Crip Camp was nominated for an Academy Award and won the Sundance U.S. Documentary Audience Award. Newnham’s other documentary directing credits include the Emmy-nominated films The Revolutionary Optimists, Sentenced Home, and The Rape of Europa.

Washington, Jan 13 (Ians) Media giants NBC News and MSNBC have laid off employees in “double digits” and the number of impacted workers could be around 75.
According to CNN, the laid off number was around 75 and the staff cuts affected across the divisions.
“No on-air talent was expected to be impacted,” according to Deadline.
Earlier this week, layoffs happened at the parent company NBCUniversal, “numbering in the dozens”.
The layoffs came after NBC News president Noah Oppenheim moved on, and his duties were split among three top executives.
“After 5 years at NBC News, today I got laid off. It’s been a helluva run. I am so grateful for the relationships I have built and the reporting we have produced,” tweeted Ezra Kaplan, business and tech producer for the network.
Last month, CNN informed employees about layoffs.

NBC News and MSNBC are laying off about 75 employees scattered across the networks, a source with knowledge confirmed Thursday to TheWrap.
The layoffs are a result of targeted programming and editorial changes that will allow the networks, which have a cumulative workforce of around 3,500 staffers total, to invest in key growth areas, according to the source.
Though both branches have recently created hundreds of roles in digital streaming and core television programming, MSNBC and NBC News plans to create new positions in the coming weeks in areas of growth.
