ABC premiered its bold new horror-mystery series with a two hour launch for "The River" (Tue., 9 p.m. Est on ABC). The series features the found footage format popularized recently in the "Paranormal Activity" films, among others. It's a very effective tool in keeping the viewer in the same sense of panic and uncertainty as the characters. And with a multitude of cameras in use because they are filming a show within the show, things aren't perhaps as tight and jerky as what was seen on "The Blair Witch Project."
In other words, the cameras are shaky -- except for several mounted cameras on the boat and when several are mounted in the trees during an overnight stay in the jungle in the second episode -- but there are more vantage points and with professionals at the helm, it's not nearly as chaotic.

Chris Lilley says he has no comedic influences, which, on the surface, is surprising because doesn't every comedian have influences? Then again, the Australian-born Lilley's style of comedy is so unique and ambivalent to anything that would dare be considered politically correct -- from his first show "We Can Be Heroes" to the cult favorite HBO series "Summer Heights High" -- that maybe his lack of role models is not surprising at all.
But with that uniqueness comes backlash and controversy. And there has certainly been some already about his new HBO series, "Angry Boys," which premieres Jan. 1 on HBO.
We spoke to the 37-year-old "Angry Boys" star, who writes and directs the series and also performs six separate characters: twin high school students Daniel and Nathan Sims; their grandmother, Ruth (a.k.a. Gran); an African-American rapper named S. Mouse; a Japanese mother named Jen Okazaki; and a surfer named Blake Oakfield.

Sydney (AP) — A conservationist group's boat that was chasing a Japanese whaling vessel off Antarctica was seriously damaged by a giant wave Thursday — a major setback in the group's ongoing and sometimes violent battle with Japan's whaling fleet, the activists said.
The wave cracked the hull and severely damaged one of the pontoons on the Brigitte Bardot, a scout vessel for the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, which is chasing the whaling fleet in the hopes of interrupting Japan's annual hunt. None of the boat's 10 crew were hurt, and the vessel was in no danger of sinking in the icy waters, Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson said.
"It's not going to stop our attempt, but it is a setback because it takes out one of our boats," Watson told The Associated Press by phone from his vessel, the Steve Irwin.

Jamie Oliver wanted to honor the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, so he cooked up a storm and threw them a vegan feast at his restaurant .
“A very big thank-you to Chef Jaime Oliver for treating the entire crew of the Steve Irwin to a free vegan dinner at Jaime’s Italian restaurant at Canary Wharf last night,” Captain Paul Watson wrote on his Facebook page.
The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is a non-profit organization that helps protect marine wildlife.
