Dial M for Munchausen: Chaganty Beams the Gaslight in Gratifying Sophomore Film
The sanctity of motherhood becomes a questionable axiomatic in Run, the sophomore film from director Aneesh Chaganty, who’s 2018 debut Searching (read review) was a novel genre effort utilizing only computer screens and smart phones. His latest, reuniting him with scribe Sev Ohanian and composer Torin Borrowdale, plays out within more customary parameters, though gets by almost entirely on the energies of its two lead actresses, including a beautifully villainous Sarah Paulson and newcomer Kiera Allen.
For those attuned to humankind’s depravities, it will be immediately clear what the thrust of the narrative is going to be, but despite some significant familiarities of similar films manages to introduce its own creepy reveals and anxiety inducing dread.…...

Strong execution can make almost any premise work. Especially when it comes to thrillers, in particular ones with somewhat confined spaces, the concept often is ridiculous. However, executing said ridiculous premise can make for an instant classic. Filmmaker Aneesh Chaganty proved himself an ace executor of the genre with his breakthrough Searching, which had pretty much the highest of concepts. Now, he’s back with Run, another thriller that is almost impeccably crafted. Hitting Hulu this week, it’s kind of a shame that this couldn’t have been a theatrical experience. The streamer will benefit, but this was made for audiences to hold their breath along to. Alas, though at least it can still be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home. The film is a thriller, centering on a mother and a daughter. Chloe Sherman (Kiera Allen) is a homeschooled teenager who’s cared for by her mother,...

Chloe Sherman (Kiera Allen), the protagonist of Run, is a differently abled teenage girl who lives a quiet, reclusive life with her mother Diane (Sarah Paulson) at their rural home in Washington State. Bright, talented and home educated by the devoted Diane, Chloe has been plagued by illness literally since birth: diabetes, asthma, and cardiac arrhythmia are among the issues she deals with daily, not to mention being confined to a wheelchair due to the loss of use of her legs.
Nevertheless, mother and daughter seem to lead a relatively happy life, even if mom sidesteps her requests for an iPhone and Chloe is disappointed that she has not heard back yet from Washington State University regarding her college application. But one day Chloe discovers something that doesn’t quite make sense, and suddenly realizes that her life with Diane–who literally controls her daughter’s carefully calibrated life from...

Ascap usually maintains a packed schedule in Los Angeles in June with separate gala pop and screen music ceremonies as well as its open-to-the-public “Experience” (formerly Expo) conference. All those events are being taken online in this quarantine year, and the performing rights organization revealed a slew of activity on Monday that is set to virtually go down in the coming two weeks.
The Ascap Pop Awards will take place online over two days, this Wednesday and Thursday. The awards themselves will be unveiled on Wednesday. The second day of the pop awards celebration will overlap with a single-day component of what’s being called the Ascap Experience Home Edition, a virtual version of the conference, to be capped by a conversation between Finneas, Billie Eilish’s Grammy-winning collaborator, and Glen Hansard, of “Once” and Swell Season fame.

Composing the musical score for Netflix’s fantasy series “Locke and Key” proved to be surprisingly personal for Torin Borrowdale. The composer crafted a dark, sweeping score in the vein of some of his favorite scores as a child from composers like Danny Elfman and James Newton Howard. “‘Locke and Key’ was a big opportunity for me to fulfill my childhood fantasy of what I wanted film scoring to be,” Borrowdale says in an exclusive new interview with Gold Derby. “I wanted to make sure the score had the breadth and the scope of this epic series. I didn’t want to limit the sound of the score so I wanted it to be a classic orchestra.” Watch the exclusive video interview with Borrowdale above.

Today we are recognizing Searching, as well as its star John Cho. Our Hollywood Film Tributes recognize films and talent for their excellence in the art of filmmaking. Whenever a genre film goes above and beyond, it’s worth making a big deal about it. Searching is just such a movie. Emotional and riveting, it also happens to feature a tremendous turn from John Cho, who’s almost doing a one man show. It’s so good, so fulfilling, and so surprising, it really did deserve to receive even more attention than it did. Today, we get to rectify that… Here is a bit from our rave review that went up in the summer, specifically in August: The film is a thriller, one with a well executed high concept, to boot. This is the plot synopsis from IMDb: “After David Kim (John Cho)’s 16-year-old daughter goes missing, a...

Last week, one of the better films of the summer, and in fact, all of 2018, opened up in limited release. It’s the Sundance Film Festival alum Searching, poised to be another success story from Park City. More than just a strong Sundance flick, it’s a riveting mystery that also executes terrific family dynamics. You could be forgiven for thinking that it’s just another film that has a unique filmmaking style and nothing more. Folks, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Having everything take place on a computer screen is a bold choice, but it’s actually one that enhances the movie. It’s an under the radar gem, ladies and gentlemen. The film is a thriller, one with a well executed high concept, to boot. This is the plot synopsis from IMDb: “After David Kim (John Cho)’s 16-year-old daughter goes missing, a local...
