(Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Season 5 premiere of “Empire.”)
The Season 4 finale of “Empire” left the fate of a handful of characters up in the air for the summer hiatus. Luckily, fans didn’t have to wait too long to find out who had perished and who survived, as the fifth season premiere gave up all those answers almost immediately.
And TheWrap got even more from “Empire” co-creator Danny Strong, when we spoke to him last month during the Television Critics Association press tour about the Fox series’ serious drama.

Wow, was that a doozy of a premiere or what?
Empire Season 5 Episode 1 picked up two years after Empire Season 4 Episode 18, and it was heavy on the action, twists, and musical numbers.
The Lyons are still out of Empire, and not all of them are faring well. Cookie and Lucious out of money took them all the way back to their pre-Empire days.
The only difference here is that they have the mansion, but it has very few contents in it. It was important to highlight that despite their dire situation, they still had their family.
It was typical of Cookie and Lucious to work many angles to be within breathing space of Eddie. The Mvp Awards were a hilarious satire of the MTV Movie & TV Awards, and it was filled with the trashy moments you would expect.
Eddie knew Lucious was a formidable foe, and that's why his heart...

Empire‘s highly-promoted “Who’s in the coffin?” mystery turned out to be something of a bait and switch. None of the characters whose fate was left hanging in the balance in last May’s finale — most notably Hakeem and Tiana — were revealed to be in the pine box. (Both survived that season-ending shootout.) As we learned in the cold open of Wednesday’s Season 5 premiere, the foreboding scene in which Lucious is seen towering over a casket was actually a vision of the future — six months into the future, to be exact. And as pretty much confirmed in the episode’s final scene,...

The Lyons are about to roar once more.
After an insane “Empire” Season 4 finale that saw Cookie (Taraji P. Henson), Lucious (Terrence Howard) and the rest of the almighty music mogul family get knocked down (and five people die), a new teaser for the upcoming fifth installment of the Fox drama — which is exclusive to TheWrap — shows the clan preparing to get back up again.
“According to the streets, you and Cookie dropped off the face of the earth, because you let your boy Eddie Barker just guerilla your whole company,” a radio DJ says to Lucious in an interview, as we see glimpses from the shootout at the end of Season 4 and the family patriarch standing over a coffin.

Empire will have a lot more Giselle in Season 5.
According to Deadline, the Fox sudser has promoted Nicole Ari Parker to a full-fledged series regular for the new season.
Season 5 will find the character “stepping out of the shadow of her ex in an effort to seize power herself. Along the way she’ll tackle grudges, make unexpected alliances and find a surprising love interest.”
Giselle first appeared on Empire Season 4 in a recurring capacity as one of the many ex-wives of Eddie Barker (Forest Whitaker).
When Empire Season 4 concluded, Giselle and Eddie were in control of the company, but the surprise death of Anika Calhoun is sure to cause some issues between them and the board.

There's no word yet on whether Whitaker will be back for the new episodes, but he is attached to lead the cast of Epix drama, Godfather of Harlem.

The Lyons have officially met their match in Eddie Barker.
If Empire Season 4 Episode 17 proved anything, it's that the scheming is showing no sign of letting up, and that's exactly what I expect of a primetime soap opera.
Eddie is a formidable opponent, and he may well be the series' best villain yet. He knows Lucious on both a personal and professional level and knows that he will resort to shedding blood if he needs to do it.
Giselle is just as crafty as Eddie, and if these are the two that ultimately knock the house of cards down on the Lyons, then I'd be quite okay with that. Both sides gave as good as they could get.
The only major issue with this uprising against the Lyons is that there's no space for Anika in that boardroom. She's like a cartoon villain who always pops up to try and get some money.

When Cookie Lyons reached out to Eddie Barker to help with the day-to-day running of Empire Entertainment, she thought she had someone she could depend on. A music legend and old family friend, Barker was supposed to be the one person Cookie could trust while Lucious recovered from the car bombing. Initially, Uncle Eddie lived up to the hype. He gave the label stability and let the Lyons focus on helping Dwight/Lucious.
But on Empire, everyone has an ulterior motive and agenda. When Eddie's money issues come to light he sets a plan in motion to solve them by stealing Empire Entertainment from his protege and oldest friends.

Empire is introducing a new ex-factor, tapping This Is Us‘ Ryan Michelle Bathe to play one of Eddie Barker’s (Forest Whitaker) former wives.
In Empire‘s fall finale, Eddie found himself fleeced of his fortune. The burgeoning financial calamity prompts him to recruit his most recent ex-wife Celeste (played by Bathe) to assist him in selling off one of his major assets. Bathe will appear on a recurring basis.
